and we're going to begin this morning with on the campaign trail, with the race for the white house taking center stage in the battleground state of iowa. yesterday it appears mitt romney's vice presidential pick may be growing on some americans. according to a new abc news/"washington post" poll, 38% favor congressman paul ryan as romney's running mate, up from 23% last week. still, 33% viewed ryan unfavorably. nbc's steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: his opponent got the weekend buzz by picking a running mate. but in drought-stricken iowa, president obama created his own buzz as only an incumbent can, ordering the federal government to buy $150 million worth of meat and fish from hard-hit farmers. >> we've got a lot of freezers. >> reporter: the president said the farm bill, frozen on capitol hill, would help more and singled out mitt romney's running mate for helping block it. >> so if you happen to see congressman ryan, tell him how important the farm bill is for iowa and small communities. >> reporter: iowans are seeing ryan. he, too, went to the swing state. a chaotic event, his speech repeatedly disrupted. >> we don't want a welfare state, we don't want a debt crisis. >> reporter: romney's pick puts him in potential trouble in florida, a state full of people using medicare that ryan wants to shrink. but in st. augustine, romney charged the president did that. >> the president's idea for medicare was to cut it by $700 billion. that's not the right answer, we want to make sure we preserve and protect medicare. >> reporter: under obama health care, medicare payments to doctors and drug companies with ill drop, not the benefits to seniors. under ryan's proposal, seniors would get vouchers for private insurance, ending medicare as a government entitlement. >> he is an articulate spokesman for governor romney's vision. but the problem is the vision is one that i fundamentally disagree with. >> reporter: i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. >> last night on the "rachel maddow show" journalist told rachel that ryan's plan for medicare may hurt the ticket in florida. >> rightly or wrongly, he's perceived as someone out to kill medicare and medicaid and for that matter, doesn't feel all that good about social security. now, this is toxic in florida. i'm not saying romney will lose florida, i'm saying as of today, he has less chance of carrying it than he had before, which is one reason he went to florida by himself. i think it's fairly obvious it's one reason he didn't go to orlando. >> the rachel maddow show 9:00 p.m. eastern. elsewhere in politics, new jersey governor chris christie will be giving the keynote speak at the republican national committee. christie said he plans to make an emphatic speech, making the case for electing mitt romney and paul ryan. christie told "u.s.a. today" he's grinding away on the fourth draft of his speech. he said he's going to be offering some very direct and hard truths to the people of the country about the trouble that we're in. well a policeman and two others are dead this morning after a dunnman opened fire near texas a&m university monday. the suspected gunman, a terminal. this despite a $100 million intrusion detection system. the new york port authority which runs the airport has called for an expedited review. the lost jet skier was charged with criminal trespassing. and now here's your first look at other news going on around america today. in florida, a bus driver was attacked by a woman who just began punching and fighting with him. just after paying for her fare. the driver, who suffered a concussion can be seen pushing the woman back out of the bus, she has been since arrested, no word on what may have set her off. in indiana, scary moments at a state fair when a stagecoach flipped over, injuring five people. among them, the state fair queen who was riding atop the buggy. it's not clear what went wrong. fortunately no one was seriously hurt and the fair queen was back to work on monday. in florida, this is one mighty big snake. researchers at the university of florida say it's a record-breaker, the largest burmese python ever caught in the state. it is 17 feet 7 inches long, weighs 160 pounds and was carrying 87 eggs when it was captured in the everglades. and finally, it's that time of year, ladies, to new york city where firefighters aren't just known as the bravest -- no. they're also quite the beefcakes. and some of the hunkiest heroes made their way to times square to sign their new 2013 calendars. the sales will help fund a fire department foundation. now for a look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins who actually only buys the calendar because you're featured in the extra 1th month. >> the one no one can see in. >> extra credit for everyone willing to shell out the money. >> i would proudly buy that calendar for all the women in my family. i'm sure my 10-month-old would love it good morning, everyone, yesterday was another hot day in texas, 104 in dallas yesterday. phoenix was 115. but we have some significant changes, and i'm not so sure we're ever going to
