Trump has promised to reboot the economy and create new jobs through Infrastructure Spending and generous tax cuts. Hes vowed to take a tough stand on trade and put american interests first. For more insight on how this might affect japan, we spoke to hugh patrick, a leading specialist on u. S. japan relations. Reporter hugh patrick is a founder of columbia Business Schools department and an expert on japan. What would be the worstcase scenario for japan economic. I that the u. S. Becomes isolationist. It will make manufactured imports more expensive, by higher tariffs, by pursuing unilateral policies. In a more fundamental sense, it means American Leadership in the world would no longer be as secure and good as it has been for the past 70 years. Reporter but a Trump Administration o offers an upsi for jajapan. Patrick says that if trump does deliver on tax cuts and infrastructure, the japanese economy will benefit in the short term. Well, clearly, if the u. S. Engages these policies, which i think it will, the u. S. Economy will grow more rapidly. It will benefit the whole world. And the economy, the Global Economy will grow somewhat better. And under those circumstances, japanese exports not only to the United States but other parts of the world will increase, and also probably Foreign Investment opportunity. Reporter however, for many in japan, the big question is what action will trump take on tre . Im going to issue a noticationff intent to widraw from the transpacific partnership, a potential disasaster for our country. Reporter the u. S. Has played a leading role in promoting the tpp. Patrick says even if washingngt does pull out, theress s stil hope. Mr. Abe has said that without the United States tpp is meaningless. I dont think thats true. You could have a 11nation tpp led by japan, and that would benefit those nations and would benefit japan. And it would carry out his own domestic process, which is difficult, of trying to restructure agriculture. So i think that it is meaningful for japan. Reporter he says scenarios like these along with continued efforts to reform japans economy could help brighten the outlook. He also speculates that in the broader context, relations between the u. S. And china might work in japans favor. Well, i think the u. S. china relationship is going to be complex and difficult, and it will make, that will mean that in that sort of complex game, japan will be viewed as an ally by trump, and he will want to make sure that he keeps his ally happy. How would that impact the japanese economy . I think that probably when it comes down to the realities of imposing tariffs against japanese goods, wherever theyre produced, that probably would not, in fact, be implemented as a policy objective. Much less being able to carry it out in practice. Reporter on balance, a positive prediction for japan, but questions remain about how trumps presidency will actually play out. And you can catch our report again online with the full transcript. Look for nhk world and business wrap. Im going to leave you with the markets.
