In baton rouge, three Police Officers were killed, three wounded in a shooting rampage sunday. Shooting began just before 9 00 a. M. At a gas station on airline highway, one milile from Police Headquarters. Baton rouge officers were responding to a 911 call of shots fired when they were ambushed the gunmen. The slain officers right in a fight as Montrell Jackson and Matthew Gerald at the and deputy brad garafola. The gunmen was identified as gavin long of kansas city, missouri. Long is africanamerican and served in the marines from 2005 22010, reaching sergeant. He was deployed to iraq from 2008 to 2009. He had and all my present, and he commented on the killing of five Police Officer in dallas, writing witith a brother killing the police, you get what i am saying, it is justice. Sunday afternoon, i spoke w with formrmer ohio statate senator na turner here in cleveland and that with her at her former high school, john f. Kennedy high school. Her son is a Police Officer them and her husband is a retired Police Officer. I asked her to talk about what happened in baton rouge. My son is in Law Enforcement, and my heart just skips beats. Andother instinct kicks in, i called my son first. I just wanted to make sure he is all right it he is here right now with the rnc. Beo not know that that will volatile, but you know, charged. Then you have this happen on the heels of dallas and on the heels of what happened to sterling and castile. My son could have been in those scenarios spirit he was a young africanamerican man in america. He could have been sterling or castile for those Dallas Police officers, or my god, he could have been one of the baton rouge Police Officers today. In terms of people targeting Police Officers, that cannot happen and a civilized society. All of the concern, the legitimate concerns that the Africanamerican Community has the just has about the justice system, it is a valid and has been for a very long time. I would say since the first ever consortium to overhear, it has been valid. And we have never quite dealt with it as a nation. But for anybody to target law isorcement officers absolutely wrong and totally unacceptable. I agree. I almost started crying. I got off a set this morning and had to keep myself from crying, because about about those families and i thought about my son. And my husband was a former Police Officer and so i have seen both sides. I get it from the pain, the things my son has to endure out of uniform and the things he has to endure in uniform. My heart goes out to Law Enforcement folks all over the country. It is wrong. We have got to get it together. What else has to happen before people understand . It almost reminded me of lyndon b. Johnson and the turner report. If you read that report today, he talks about the volatile situation between the African American immunity and police. It is the same thing in 2016. The what is totally and exigible is the gunning down of Law Enforcement officers. It cannot be tolerated. Amy what do you think means needs to happen . We are about to go see where tamir rice was killed by police. Powerbrokers in this country have to come together with civic minded folks and do something. People are really tired of all the talk, and that is all they have gone into another situation happens and then another and then another. How many sleeping situations to we have to have happened before people come together and take ngtion how many flippi situations have to happen . John kasich created a task force that might request after the shooting of tamir rice, and John Crawford iii in beaver creek outside of the dayton area. I said, governor, you have to do some do, and he did not hesitate. He created a task force that we got together as a state to give people the opportunity to have boards, then talking to us. We put together a list of recommendations to the governor, then the governor turned the task force into a collaborative so that we have, for the first time in ohios history, our law force agents will have standards about the use of force, the use of deadly force. We are looking at cameras and looking at implicit fire, which brings into what happened to tamir rice and to John Crawford iii and to what happened to mr. Sterling and castile. Withy have to do implicit biases from some Law Enforcement officers, and dare i say, the entire community . All of us a recovering in this country in terms of how you see africanamericans, men in particular, but it happens to women, too. The Police Officers are faced with having to deal with those implicit biases in everyday action. They are taking an open office to protect and serve. Ften times, that stops im proud in ohio that we have had no incidences of outbreaks of violence or anything, even case in cleveland in 2012, two unarmed African Americans, a woman and a man, 137 shots into the car. Officers said they thought they were shooting at them, but it turns out the car backfired. But shooting 137 times . These were Police Officers shooting, cleveland Police Officers followed this car. At some point, you had to realize you were not being shot at. The two africanamericans unarmed, 100 37 shots. Last time Something Like that happened in this country was 1995. This was 2012 to it only one officer was brought to trial, and he was acquitted. Time and time again, the Africanamerican Community amy that case were both individuals were killed in a car, gunned down more than 100 times, led to the consent to create between Justice Department and cleveland police, which they are under today. But people do not see that even though there is a group of people working, everyday citizens working with police and with the federal government, everyday people are not even know that that is going on, so that is why we need tangible things to happen. One of the recommendations from the people was accountability and transparency. Folks are not asking for more than they deserve. They do deserve that one thing i will never forget that a young woman said that a young man said, he says it is and no snitch culture among the criminal element, and Law Enforcement always wants to penetrate that. If you see something, say something. But what about the no snitch culture in the police . We know that there are good Police Officers, but they prop up bad Police Officers, and they will not talk about what is wrong in this system. I believe another thing that we have to do is to prepare them to survive, to have good Police Officers calling out their sisters and brothers who may doing things wrong. Amy that is former ohio state senator nina turner, who represents cleveland. I met with her and her old high school, john f. Kennedy high school. Her son is a Police Officer, as was her husband. We then went over to where tamir rice w was killed. We will be playing that later in the week. Tamir rice would have turned 14 on june 25. This is democracy now , democracynow. Org, the war and peace report. Im amy goodman. When we come back, we will be talking about turkey, the attempted to this weekend, and about the fbi visiting homes of people they thought might be protesting this week here in cleveland. We will talk about the corporations that have refused to supupport the Republican Convention here. And we going to talk about the document, ased Something Like 13 years in the waiting, around saudi arabia and 9 11. Stay with us. [music break] amy that is johnny cash singing hurt. This is democracy now , democracynow. Org, the war and peace report. Im amy goodman. Turkey remains in a state of crisis after turkey stages a coup. Close to 300 people were killed them around 1400 room did when did friday night. The two began when the turkish president , recep tayyip erdogan, was vacationing at a ceasefire resort. The muniz faction in the military said it has taken action to protect democracy from erdogan. Turkey has arrested 6000 people, including senior members of the judiciary in the military. Erdogan blames a cleric for orchestrating the attempted coup. He lives in the poconos in pennsylvania, yes, here in the United States, and has denied involvement. Said his erdogan government may reinstate the Death Penalty to punish those responsiblble, and he is askinig extradited back be to turkey. To talk about these issues, were joined in cleveland by a guest, director of the American Kurdish Information Network. Welcome to democracy now great to have you back. Talk about what happened in turkey. A coup happened to take over the government. It wanted to topple recep tayyip erdogan. Even the best of the turkish generals would have been a disaster for turkey, even though erdogan is dictated one of the leaders right now. So the fact that the coup failed is good news for the people of turkey. But the people that should have led the coup should have been the people themselves. If they had led this attempt to topple erdogan, who is acting like a dictator, it would have been better like in romania. That did not happen. Thegan now feels like he is sultan. Arresting people left and right. Internet access has been suspended. Continueis he will acting like this. This money, john kerry said if he continues like this, turkish membership of nato could be suspended. I wish he had also said the same when the five cities were bombarded last year, turned into rebel and some 7000 people were killed. He did not see anything about nato then, and now that some of the military actors that she is talking about turkey needs to be a democracy to be part of nato. Amy w where did the kurds fit into this picture . The kurds, they do not want the military to either they do not want the military coup either. They came out against it. But there is a war going on for a year now. Erdogan wants to consolidate his think ind you adversity, people come together. If a war event occurs, the country will unite behind them. That is the strategy. But you do not make progress with a minority. Syriat is erdrdogans policy . Did that motivate the generals . The generals have been unhappy with him because of the direction of the country going towards medina. There is a general with many shortcomings, but he has says the country should separate market from the state. On his watch, he served for life , but at least some blends of institutions that he could say were working and making progress towards a europeaean on society. But with erdogan coming to power, initially he was open to event, he iser an now literally acting likike a oneman show. He does not like criticism. Amy lets talk about the cleric who lives in the poconos, and erdogan is demanding his extradition to john kerry put in in desk said he is not fit the requisite documents for the extradition. He pointed out that these two were close allies and tell just a few years ago. They were. Those supporters worked with the turkish police, and they helped erdogan to send the army back to the barracks, if you will. The man this came when erdogan ,ecided to act like a dictator throwing generals and prison, declaring war on the kurds. In terms of the syria policy, turkey became a jihadi highway, if you will. L. Someme 35,000 foreign troops, my from southeast asia, africa, formemer soviet union too they would come to turkey and then cross the border. Erdogan does not like assad. Erdogan is sunni. A t thought syria would become different type of state. Talks of kurdish baton ami six feet under, if you will, because the kurds in the north of the country have established a federal entity on what will happen. Inbound finally, the Death Penalty. Erdodogan has arrested 6000 peoe and is calling for reinstatement of the Death Penalty. What do you see happening . He says the people want this. His fans came out. Sharia. Them would say so the signs are really good. Democracy itself is not really healthy. If he hangs these generals, i , with itsarmy singular commanders, i think the country wilill go furtherer towd the crisis and breakup. Amy well, thank you very much for being with us, director of the American Kurdish Information Network and why are you here, by the way . To educate the americans who whohere to elect a leader will be voted as the president of the country, and i thought they should know about the kurds him of the middle east. Unfortunately, i fear the world is going toward that crisis, and many people think trump can address these issues. I thought if that becomes the reality, people should know who the kurds are. Amy thanks so much for being with us. As we move from turkey to saudi arabia, this is democracy now , democracynow. Org, the war and peace report. I am amy goodman. The obobama administration finay declassified 28 pages from the september 11 report detailing possible ties between the saudi government and the 9 11 attacks. Prior tort states, september 11, the fbi apparently did not focus investigative resources on saudi nationals in the United States due to saudi arabias status as an american i like. 15 of the 19 men who hijacked planes on 9 11 were from saudi arabia. Speaking friday, the white house talked about the importance of the declassified document. The conclusion of the 9 11 commission is, or was, as they wrote, they found, no evidence that the saudi government as an institution or senior saudi officials individually funded al qaeda, and the commission was able to draw onon the infnforman they d declassified today. They wrote followup interviews and further investigated leaead. They did not turn up anything about the saudi government or saudi officiaials individually funding al qaeda. Documentseclassified raise new quesestions ababout te role of a saudi councncil offffl based in t the los angelesrerea. He p personally helpeded two ofe hickckers of their after they arrived in los angeles in early 2000. And it redo reveals details about a flight from phoenix from washington, d. C. , forced to make an Emergency Landing after a saudi man attended to enter the cockpit twice. Despite these findings, josh earnest said the report found no links between the saudis and al qaeda. This information, even if it is a publicly available, does not change the assessment of the u. S. Government that there is no evidence that the saudi government or seninior saudi officials individually funded al qaeda. By there now joined cofounder of codepoink. Kingdom book is called of the unjust. Welcome. I saw you outside protesting, quite a major scene there with police on horseback pushing you forward withpink their horses as you were singing for peace. Lets talk about saudi arabia. This is hardly getting any attention, clearly deliberately by the obama administration, because it came out on friday when, at t the time, this was onore so much took place friday, but at the time, it was believed donald trump was going to be announcing his running mate, governor pence. Talk about the 28 pages that you have been demanding, among many people, including the former governor and senator released. It finally was. You are right to put it in the context of they tried to hide t this as much as they coud do it friday afternoon when congressss was going on summer vacation, when the conventions were starting, they really wanted to there either this. What is in the 20 pages . I think the way the administration and the saudi officials tried to downplay it, you have to question why they were hiding it for 14 years. What we see in the 20 pages is 10 different saudi individuals who are named and detailed about their connections to the saudi government and their connections to helping the hijackers. This is mostly the ones living in san diego. Twothirds of the hijackers were living in florida. We do not have any information about themm. And then 8000 ages of documents that bob graham and others are trying to get released. You talk about the dry run in 1999. It was actually two saudis on theieir way to a party at the saudi i embassy with tickets pad for by the saudi government that tried to getet into the cockckpt twice with an Emergency Landing, and then the fbi decided not to further investigate it. You mentioned tamari, who is alallowed to go back to saudi arababia, when n he was i interd again in 2004 and denied he had any contact with the hijackers despite being presented h his phonone records. Ththere are so many connections between individuals related to the saudi government and these hijackers. It i is hard to o even see why e u. S. Goverernment, whether it is under the Bush Administration or the obama administration, continues to consider saudi arabia an ally. If you look deeper, you u will e thingsgs 97 billion worth of weapons sales, so therere is a t of money involved in this alliance. Amy talk about that, the u. S. Saudi relationship. Right now, i would say it is not based on oil, because only 12 of the oil and from the u. S. Comes from saudi arabia. It is based on weapons sales. It is the largest purchaser of u. S. Weapons. 97 billion worth now in the works under the obama administration, the largest thousand weapons to any country ever in the history of the United States going to saudi arabia. Theyey will be using this elevenths to c commit war crimis in yemen, not onlyly u. S. Weas but logistical supportrt of the United States. Saudi arabia is the country that is s spreading extremimism throughoutut the world, a county based on t the most t intolerant forms of islam, and it hasas ben using billions of dollars of petrodollars to spread that extremism all over the world. It is quite extraordinary. The saudit to turn to prime ministst speaking afterr the 28 pages were releaseded on friday. He ciairirector ofof nationanl intelligence mike came out and said there is no involvement of the saudi government, of saudud offialals in thehe events s of. The sesenate investigationon cao the same conclusion. So it is now finished. Amy there you have the Saudi Foreign minister. Your response to what he is saying, that this proves there is no connection. It is insane. The saudi Government Employees eight different lobby groups in the United States. The foreign minister came to the u. S. When this was being released to her they had a fullcourt press out to downplay this. The only thing i saw was the New York Times it actually said it was far more substantial document fan the saudis and american officials tried to indicate. For most of the press, they did not cover this of the covered it the way the u. S. Government and the saudi government wanted it to the way the 9 11 families are people like senator graham in florida. Amy you are here protesting at the Republican Convention. I saw you last night out on the streets. Donald trump has called out the saudi regime. Talk about donald trump versus hillary c clinton on this issue, not to mention the libertarians and green party candidates, as well. Donald trumump really wants e sasaudis to just pay momore. He would be e happy if the rerelationshship with saudi ara, as long as they paid more for what he calls their own defense he wants the saudis to get more involved in the mimiddle east coconflict. Yes, he has said s some things about wondering if they really are friends of the United States, but in the end, i do not think we should be under any illusions that donald trump is going to cut off the saudis. He just wants a better deal. Donald trump has many dealings himself personally with the saudi government and saudidi princes. Hillary clinton has an even worse record. In fact, her foundation has received somewhere between 10 million and 25 million from the saudi government. She has had very intimate healings with the saudis. She calls them a great ally of the United States. When she was secretary of state, the highest amount of weaponons sales were approved to the saudi government. Amy why are you here . I am protesting both donald trump and the rnc, and i will be protesting Hillary Clinton at the dnc. I think we have a terrible choice of president ial candidates, and we have a system that is so corrupt. One part of that is this continued alliance with a repressive saudi regime that is repressing its own people and is spreading extremism around the world. And we have to question why in the world is our government and our two Political Parties continuing this alliance . Amy the approach with you all just up as pink lady liberty, k women, looooking at Immigration Rights and ending endless war. Did you come in on horseback last night . We very consciously tried to look very welcoming and warm. We were welcoming the people coming to the convention, but we were saying, lets stop the hatred and open our arms to people fleeing oppression, whether it is from syria or fleeing from latin america. And the response of the police was overwhelming and ridiculous. Amy we will continue to follow the protest on the ground this week. Thank you for being with us, cofounder of codepink. Her latest book coming out in august, kingdom of the e unjus behihind the u. S. Saudi connection will be out in august. Coming up, knocking on the door of wouldbe protesters here in cleveland. Big corporations that will not be supporting the republicans. Stay with us. [music break] for the fbi, john hiett. This is democracy now , democracynow. Org, the e war and peace report. Im amy goodman. Convention, king with power, peas, and the presidency. Two weeks of twohour daily coverage. The Republican Convention this week and the Democratic Convention next week. As the republican Convention Opens today here in cleveland, we look at the protesters on the streets. The fbi and the department of Homeland Security and the secret service have reportedly knocked on the doors of dozens of cleveland activists, demanding to know if they are organizing protests here the rnc. Law enforcement agents have reportedly also made phone calls to relatives, neighbors, and places of employment asking about the activists whereabouts. Many of the activists say they have no involvement in the rnc protests and are being targeted for their prior work with the local chapter of black lives matter and the occupy wall street movement. Several activists say they believe they came on the radar of local Law Enforcement after attending a 2015 protest followg the acquittal of cleveland Police Officer Michael Brelo for a Fatal Shooting of two unarmed African Americans in their car, Timothy Russell and malissa williams. In a statement to the cleveland plain dealer, an fbi spokeswoman said agents were conducting Community Outreach as a part of their security planning for the rnc. However, activists say the visits are intimidating and designed to discourage people from engaging in lawful First Amendment activities, a claim supported by the ohio chapters of the National Lawyers guild, the aclu, and the naacp. Well, on sunday,y, democracy now s deena guzdzder and Elizabeth Press spoke to two activists who say they were targeted by e e fbi. My name is robin adelmann, and a few arars ba, i i wapart of occupy cleveland doing activism. I ss arrteted downtown a couple aaragoo for protesting verdict, and i was part of that activism. Just recently, the fbi and detectives, two weeks ago, came to my apartment looking for information. This is breaking with andention, war, peace, the presidency. At least 19 corporations that usually sponsor ththe rnc havee dramatatically scacaled back o r cancnceled their commitment, citing the presumptive nominee, Donald Trumps controversial comments about women, immigrants, and people of color. Last week, the Cleveland Host Committee asked billionaire backer Sheldon Adelson still cover a Million Dollars shortfall. Cocacola, pepsi, fedex, and visa have bowed out, another companies is sponsored 2012 rnc that will not be returning include apple, wells fargo, ups, motorola, j. P. Morgan chase, walgreens, and ward. This comes as a civil rights group, color of change, has pressured organizations nototo endodorse trumps hateful and raises record or face boycott. Ofare joined by the color change executive director. Tell as what you did. In early february, we started we had been watching donald trump for years. Five years ago, we ran our First Campaign against donald trump when he was doing the birther rant and asking for transcripts from president obama. But his work comes from before that. So we recognize that this convention was going to be coming up. Even if he was not the winner at the time, he was saying there could potentially be riots if he was not. We started to do some research, and we looked into the corporation that sponsored four years ago and eight years ago. We have a big problem with campaign finance. There is a need for systemic, longterm work around this. Any corporation doeoes not haveo disclose until 60 days after the convention. So we had to spend a lot of time researching. So we went behind the scenes. We sent letters and started the conversation behind the scenes with cocacola and others, while also starting a Public Campaign with our members, talking about what these corporations do, the access they are trying to buy, and the relationships they are trying to have. Cocacola toto get lead it we had to go public on cocacola a little bit, as well. After cocacola decided they were going to pull out, over 500,000 that let less number they gave previously, we moved to microsoft. We started hear back from corporations, and they would say things like, we give to both sides, this is about civic engagement. They would say it is not about left or right but about right or wrong. There was everything from running ads through ip addresses within Silicon Valley to employees of corporations. We would go directly to the staff if we do not hear from leadership. We would say that you all are working for a place, and you may care about clilimate, diversity, or womens rights or lgbt rights or black liveses matter, but you are working for a place that is supporting donald trump, that will be helping to support a celebration. Amy how did these corporations tell you they were pulling out . Walgreens, j. P. Morgan, motorola, ups, apple did they pull o out or give less . Most of them gave lesess. Most of them had already given some cash, so they could not get the money back. Given 75,000 in 2015 to start off and probably had a plan of giving upwards of 1 million total. Once they started the campaign, they started the campaign, the shut off all additional money. Some corporations already committed to giving things that were in kind to an already signed contracts, but we were able to get them to pull back on cash spared s some corporations, like apple and others, hp, decided no money whatsoever. Amy and thehen you met take companies who wrote an open letter against Donald Trumps nomination . And leveraging it. When they started to write these letters and at the same time, were seeing these corporations still give money, and we said, there is a disconnect between your language and saying we do not like donald trump, but you are going to actually support a celebration for him with streamers and balloons and confederate flags. We w were clear. We threw up ads we never had to run, and we had ill boards in Silicon Valley. Corporations would try to find a way to say were still trying to make our decision, and we will give them timelines and deadlines. We also worked to build a Multiracial Coalition of organizations to support the campaigns, from Muslim Advocates to latinos, to a womens organization, lgbt organization, progressive groups, building a coalition of folks that, once we started this campaign, came on board and helped to build a movement. Saying that you cannot come for our money by day and support trump up by night. Amy rashad robinson, after the dallas shootings and now we have the Baton Rouge Police shootings, not to mention the shootings of residents, you were invited to the white house for a summit with president obama when he came back from the Dallas Memorial Service a at what happened there . Meetings a fourhour with on enforcement t and civil rights leaders. I brought the demand of color of change, which is to defund policed departments that are unable to value like lives. We are in cleveland, where the cleveland Police Department now has riot g gear that they are planning to keep afterwards. Amy they arare under r a Justie Department Consent Decree and are being watched either Justice Department they got 50 million for the Republican National convention. Absolutely. I have been on the ground in cases like ferguson, baltimore, and i watched a militarization of our Police Departments. Baton rouge police departmtment has gotten n 3 million from the Justice Department over the last five years, even while having multiple civil rights investigations. We continue to see the fact that we are not changing the incentive structure between federal government money and what local enforcement do. We went to the white house because we continue to bring demands to the white house and we are always willing to have conversation and dialogue. More than convnversation and dialogueue, we need action. Without action, we will continue to be in this place 5, 10, 15 years from now. As we were to mobilize our members i also had a real back and forth with police. Unfortunately, they continue to come to the conversations but never offer up amy we are going to find out what you said and posted online on democracynow. Org. Thanks so much for being with us or that concludes our two hours of daily broadcasts on the first day of the Republican National convention here in cleveland. Tune in every day and tell your friends.
