Todays aid walk brings thousands together to unite in the fight against, and, and, kyw news radio is live at the event. Good morning, cherri. Reporter good morning, rahel. A lot has happened in the past 30 years. Thirty years ago if you got diagnosed with aids it was a death sentence and now people are living full lives as long as they take care of themselves but people are still gathering. Thousands have gathered here along eakins oval right in front of the steps of the art museum, and the one portion of the aid walk run philly already underway, and now, they are gearing up for the walk portion, and one of the very cool parts of this event, of course, is the swag. I mean i have on the glasses, and i have on some, you know, mardi gras beads and thanks in courtesy to philadelphia fight. Now ims here with jane stall the executive director. You guys have sort of evolve, as well, and other aids organizations have evolved, as, you know, people are more aware of this other disease with you it is still a huge problem. Yeah, well, we started, we had one clinic. Now we have three clinics. We have our main clinic, the Treatment Center for people with hiv, but we also have have a program that is there to serve people hoff been in prison or jail. We have a youth clinic, and i think one of the things that we have realized is that you need to address issues that make people vulnerable to hiv in the first place. We have been doing that. Reporter that is the thing, they are going to the root of the problem that has caused people to get hiv and aid in the first place. So you have expanded your services and there is a whole, i mean you just dont do hiv and aids. We just dont do hiv, we do primary care along with hiv but also, were spending a lot of our time trying to reach people who were very high risk because it has been known for a few years now that if they take some of the medicines that are used to treat aids they wont acquire hiv, and they wont catch it no matter what they do. That is an important way of trying to slow down and perhaps stop this epidemic. And, that is a a prevention, that a lot of people, high Risk Behavior to take on a daily to make sure that they dont spread it to other people. Yes, i mean our Youth Program is doing this with young people, many of them are young men who have sex with men but it is also being done with people who are sadly still sharing needles, you know, might be using illegal drugs, but whatever it is that puts somebody at risk, if you take this medicine, you wont acquire hiv. Other related point is that it is really important for people to know they are hiv status. They need to get themselves into treatment and if you are effectively treated, you will in the past hiv on to other people. Reporter which is a wonderful thing. I will mention that 30,000 people according to the Pennsylvania Department of health are currently living in the philadelphia area living with the disease. So part of the effort here as you can see, gathering here is to raise money to help those individuals. I mean the aid fund is the organization that put on and organizes this event and they will be giving out grants, directly to help individuals who may be struggling with the disorder that gets them housing, to get them prescription drugs, whatever they may need, to make sure that they live stable lives to take their medicine, and stop the spread of the disease, and at 9 00 oclock this morning the walk portion will commence, and right now they have been reading the names of the individuals, here live, we have aid quilt, lots of testing going on here, for those people so like jane said they can find out their status and stop the spread of hiv and aids and, of course, all of the really cool swag. So, again, this is going to be happening all morning, thousands here to stop the spread of hiv and aid. Live at eakins oval, cherri gregg for kyw news radio for cbs3 Eyewitness News. I do this almost every day, it helps, build up my arms,. Doctors say if he could stand the pain exercise was helpful and now, dave, who is 50, runs every day, hoping to share, his message of survival, never giving up to others who struggle with physical and mental pain. I dont even think it is strength in courage it just comes down to, you either keep moving or you die. We have High Pressure off shore, this pushes jet stream further north, so it a laos that warmth to move from the south and west. Were talking about highs ten to 15 degrees, above average and, that is probably going to hear the term Indian Summer thrown around next few days. Classic conditions, you know, mid to late fall after the first frost which we have gotten in the suburbs. Just a period of above average temperatures with clear skies, at the night and sunshine during the day. The term was throughout to be name because of the native americans used warm temperatures to know back out front and gather more supplies and food for the upcoming winter. That makes sense. Further north in the Lehigh Valley and poconos 120 seconds. Look to the south, you may see this rocket, unmanned, just taking supplies to the International Space station. If you remember two years ago they launched a rocket like this and it blew blew up. Hopefully this time it is more successful. Overall pattern is warm, cold front to our north, just bringing in some cloud around tomorrow, maybe a stray sprinkle in the poconos. Tuesday we are back to full sunshine with very warm temperatures. Today, breaking out in the lower 70s, even up in the Lehigh Valley, cooler at the coast, tonight, it is no the that cold, 60s and 50s in the suburbs and then tomorrow, making a run at 80 degrees. Milder today, up to 73 for at afternoon temperature and that extended forecast it is feeling like september.
