You guys good to go . You lost your umbrella. Thats good. Reporter i d yes, you can see, thats the big difference from the top of the 5 00 show. No rain gear here in the poconos. Things are looking much better in jim thorpe, as we head into the remainder of the evening hours tonight. Now, im here with the mobile weather watcher, and were tracking some high humidity, and high dew points. So lets show you a look at the Current Conditions with the mobile weather watcher. Temperatures checking in in the upper 70s, and we have dew points that are in the lower zero seven ace, so of course thats still even though the rain has passed at least up here in the poconos still making it feel very uncomfortable out here. But look for sunshine, temperatures upper 70s, lower 80s in the poconos this weekend. Well have meteorologist, lauren casey tracking the storms in just a bit. For now we send it over to ukee. Reporter chelsey, thanks so much. Youre absolutely right. The sun is coming out. The sun glistening off the roads all around me. The town is coming alive again people are starting to come out, going to the restaurant, just a beautiful evening and the bells are chiming. I dont know if you can hear it or not. Thats a great sign. Thats lack from the ground. Lets take you upstairs now from high in the chopper. Looking high above carbon county, pennsylvania, through the years. Now, this area has been called the switzerland of america. As the slopes of the pocono mountains lead down to the Historic Town of where we are right now, of jim thorpe. The gateway to the poconos. Now there is area, i dont know if you know or not, used to be called ma un chunk. The towns name sake wasnt given until the year 1953. Heres more information on that. Very interesting. Olympian, athlete, jim thorpe, accomplished the never to be duplicated feats of wing in 1912 back in the Olympic Games in stockholme, sweden. Thorpe, a native american, played Major League Baseball for over six years, road horseback, was accomplished ballroom dancer, even great bowler. After his death, thorpes third wife moved his body to n a un chunk. She was looking for a place to give her husband honor. He had died as the most decorated olympic athlete that oak home al would not give him a monument. Now it, in return, the struggling town changed its name from the words for sleeping bear, to honor the man in hopes that the name recognition would boost tourism to this area. Now, before the town changed its name, railroad magnent, as a packer made his mark. Asa packer helped build the towns train structure, and today his beautiful home still stands. It is a Great Attraction here in the area. Nearly untouched, and it is up on the hill, overlooking the borough. The grand building overlooks the olds mann chunk historic district, but sting into the home of asa packer is like stepping back into the 1800s. Asa packer was man not known until he came here to ma un chunk in 1833. By the time he died in 1879 , packer was a household name he was a still is, philanthropist, builder of the Lehigh Railroad and founder every lehigh university, also built his magnificant mansion in jim thorpe on a hill in 1861. The home was given to the town of ma un chunk, now jim thorn, in 1912 by the last daughter mary packer cummings. She gave the town 60,000 to take care of the home. The remarkable threestory, 18 many reason home, remained sealed until 1954. When the borough granted trusteeship to the Jim Thorpe Lions club. Who opened it to the public, in 1956. We are not a restoration, we are preservation. The home granted National Historic landmark stat just 1984 and still features all every it stunning details. Draperies, made with 14 car al gold, fine woodcarvings, by european artisans, impressive crystal chandeliers in each room, and of course, a self playing organ. I do believe that there was many millionaires as we call them that lived here in ma un chunk, but i can honestly tell that you i think asa packer is the only one here today in 2017 that we still look around and know that he left his mark. Tours of the mansion depends on the time of year. For more information, jess head over to our website cbsphilly. Com well hook you up to the asa packer mountains here in jim thorpe, pennsylvania.
