Not the to say walt doesnt remember other stories, but of the thousands of people walt has met in 36 years, at cbs3 Eyewitness News he never forgot the smiling man in the picture, ken castle, in 2008, ken was dying of cancer his family was arranging his affairs and found a surprise in his military discharge papers. Ken earned a purple heart in world war two, he had lost his hearing due to an explosion at battle of iwa jima but ken never received the medal. The children called me and said he doesnt have long to live, he was on oxygen, do you think you will be able to do this. Walt went to visit. Walt was really upbeat, and he had taken on the mission too. That is what it was to me i was on a mission. I felt like he was on a mission with me. You wouldnt mind if we tried to help get you one now would you. As long as you dont go to too much trouble. That night on cbs3 walt had a message for ken. Mr. Castle, it noise trouble, in fact, it is an honor. President of the you had of america has awarded the purple heart. Three weeks later, ken had his medal. He signed it. It wasnt probably three weeks i got a gentle call that he passed away but we got him his purple heart. I got that picture. I got that picture on my desk. I never taken that one down. I didnt know that but i do know, to know it sits on his desk means a lot. He made such a big difference for us and we are all so incredibly grateful. He has made a big difference in so many lives, our friend, collogue walt hunter. What a mission, man. Ukee, im going to miss you guys, so much, im going to miss people like our purple heart winner, people who have taught me so many life lessons. Hey whatever i have given i have gotten back 10,000 times. You have given a lot and we are so grateful to call you our friend and collogue and it has been all of our honor and joy to share the air waves with you and there is no other walt hunter, and never will be.
