Two Hero Police Officers talk about taking down a suspect as they say he violently attacked a woman. Good evening, im chris may. Jessica is off tonight. Just a short timing a police in southwest philadelphia charged that man for an tack in University City. Natasha brown spoke exclusively with those officers who were just in the right place at the right time. Shes life now at southwest detectives with that conversation and new information on the suspect. Natasha . Reporter well, chris, a short time ago we were able to speak with the two officers who witnessed and interrupted last nights violent attack on a 38yearold woman here in southwest philadelphia. They do tell us that they were extremely happy to be in the right place at the right time. Veteran patrol officers anthony britain and jim ballmer were already on high alert. Canvassing the University City area in search of a man terrorizing and attacking women. Little did they know thursday evening they would catch him in the act of committing another assault. As we were turning on 41st street from baltimore avenue, we observed a male that we information from walk up behind a female and strike her in the back of the head. Reporter suspect hit the 38yearold u penn grad student not once but twice with a bicycle lock. Thats when these two plain clothes officers quickly gave chase. Myself mine partner exit our Unmarked Police vehicle and identified ourselves as Police Officers. At which time he start to do run. After a short foot pursuit we were able to apprehend the male. He actually through his arms up and screamed and then once we took him to the ground, we tried to handcuff him. He kept putting his hands underneath him. We got his hands out and handcuffed both hands with the assistance of other officers. Reporter the 55yearold suspect is linked to three other attacks on u penn and drexel students over the past several days. Police also using dna evidence to see if he may be linked to the rape and robbery of another student atrophyth and chestnut. He was charged overnight with one of the robberies which was the job last night he was observed by Police Officers striking this female. He just was arraigned here at 55th and pine and received 150,000 bail. It feels great to get somebody like that off the street so he cant harm anybody else. Reporter the officers are back out on the streets protecting and serving a community most grateful for their actions. Heroes. What do you think. I wouldnt say that. Just out there trying to make a difference every day. The heroes are the ones that gave their life doing this job. Reporter well two great Police Officers very humble as you could hear there. Police right now have not released the name of the suspect however we can tell you that he is still here at southwest detectives even at this hour. Hes already been charged with robbery, simple and as 58ed assault in the one case from last night at 41st and pine and charges are pending in the other cases that he is linked to. This evening was the first of two viewings for the first female philadelphia firefighter to be killed in the line of duty. Her physical low firefighters and First Responders are now preparing for joyce craigs funeral tomorrow. The craig family was escorted to the viewing by a motorcycle honor guard. Joyces 16yearold son helped lead the mourners while her 16 month old daughter was gently carried in the procession. When you lose one of your own its rough. But most importantly its for the family just to show the 81 tee we have within the fire service. Late in the night firefighters from across the nation and from as far away as canada descended on the city to honor the first female philadelphia firefighter to die in the line of duty. Tuesdays Early Morning basement fire in West Oak Lane claimed the life of the 11 year veteran. Taken from her family, friends and her Fire Fighting family at the age of 36. I cried because, you know, you dont want to lose anybody. But then when you lose somebody doing the job that you love so much, it saddens you because it could have been me. Im very upset and very sad and were just hur about it. Now there will be another viewing tomorrow morning from 8 00 until 10 00 oclock at Bachelor Brothers Funeral Services on north broad street. The funeral that begins afterward and the burial is at ivy hill cemetery. Also the Firefighters Union has established a Memorial Fund for craigs two children. Chopper three over that scene earlier where the schuylkill expressway meets 476. Two cars at the scene flipped and a child was taken to childrens hospital. That childs condition is not known at this hour. We know there were other victims who were able to escape the wreckage but were not clear on how many other people may have been injured. The accident scene is now clear but drivers are still dealing with a backup in that area. Well, after week of rain and some snow showers, were in for a weekend warmup and were all looking forward to that. Especially meteorologist kathy orr who is outside on the sky deck with more on what we can expect. Cant wait, kathy. Me neither. It is a little bit breezy out here. Temperatures are falling. Well tonight a man is facing murder charges in the beating death of a gloucester township woman who vanished from her home last week. Authorities say that they found susan johnsons body about 10 miles away from evesham township. Investigators believe that johnson was killed by miguel diaz during some kind of argument inside of her home on skyline drive back on decembe december 5th. Her body was dumped in the woods near commonwealth drive. Johnson had recently taken in diaz and his girlfriend with whom johnson worked. It appears that both are witness and mr. Diaz were had fell on hard times and miss johnson out of the kindness of had heart took these two individuals in, provided them with shelter and when a dispute came up regarding money related matter, it led to a physical altercation which led to the death of miss johnson. The girlfriend led police to the body in this case. We are told she is not being charged in the crime. New at 11 00 oclock night, remembering the victims of a deadly plane crash that occurred just outside of washington, d. C. The vigil was held in gaithersburg, maryland torque night for marie gemmel and her two children. They were killed when a plane crashed into their home. Gemmel was originally from brick township, new jersey. And tonight her family and friends in her hometown gathered to support her family. Heres Eyewitness News reporter david spunt. Reporter the video is hard to watch. But what happened inside this house is even harder to comprehend. 36yearold marie gemmel, her threeyearold son cole and infant son devon all died after a private plane crashed into their maryland home on monday. Its hard to believe that it was somebody that i have known for so long. Somebody that was so sweet and kind and generous. Reporter amy was Maries High School friend from brick, new jersey. Thats where marie grew up and her old friends and classmates met in brick friday night at the river rock restaurant to raise money for the gemmel family. She organize the fundraiser. She was a kind, kind soul. She had beautiful heart. Beautiful family. Beautiful children. She was something special. Reporter friends from maryland set up online gofundme page. Also dedicate to do the gemmels. Already friends, family, even complete strangers chipped in almost half a Million Dollars for amys surviving daughter and her husband. But in addition to the gofundme page all proceeds from inside the restaurant will go into a separate fund for housing and clothing. Youre in your own home, youre safe, and for that to happen to her, um, you know, its difficult to think about myself. Reporter police say after the plane crashed, gemmel through herself over her two sons to protect them. The smoke and fire too much and they died just minutes later. Its unbelievable that Something Like that could happen and shes a hero for trying to protect the two children. Reporter now those who knew her growing up insist its their turn to help her family. Marie is survived by her husband and daughter who were not home at the time of the crash. Investigators are still work to go figure out exactly why that plane went down. Well street demonstrations continue around philadelphia after grand juries clear Police Officers in the deaths of Michael Brown and eric garner. Temple University Students called for reforms to the criminal Justice System this afternoon. Dozens of them marched from broad and cecil b. Moore to the Philadelphia Art Museum and they did cause some traffic jams along the way. Once they arrived, students held a dyein on the steps of the art museum. In camden, this dyein was held in front of the federal courthouse. Members of the camden churches organized for people laid down on the ground for about 4. 5 minutes representing the 4. 5 hours that Michael Browns body was on the ground in ferguson before it was covered up. The Philadelphia Police department graduated its latest class of recruits today and they are certainly entering a profession under heavy scrutiny. Class 359. Whoo Police Commission are in Charles Ramsay oversaw the graduation of 39 brand new officers at Temple University today. With demonstrations against Police Brutality now happening daily, the commissioner says he wants to make sure this new class understands respect but that it doesnt feel persecuted before they can even hit the streets. Well today the Richard Stockton college of new jersey bought the former showboat casino in Atlantic City for 18 million. The school plans to convert the property into a brand new campus that include more than 800 rooms of student housing. It will also keep the hotel open with nearly 480 rooms available to the general public. Meantime, the proposed sale of the former Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City is now officially off. Today a bankruptcy judge voided the sale to toronto based brook field asset management. Brook field won a Court Auction for the failed casino at a price of 110 million. Some incredible video here of a rare weather phenomenon at the grand canyon earlier today. This is a thick sea of clouds filling the canyon. Really amazing to see. Apparently this happens when clouds are forced down by warm air and then unable to rise but were told it only happens a few times a decade. The clouds are expected to gradually clear up in the coming days, but, kathy, that is just something remarkable to see. Yeah. Ive never seen that before. Spectacular sight. Once in a lifetime. What a beauty. Our eyewitness weather watchers are saying temperatures are falling every so slowly because of the cloud cover. But thats going to change overnight and during the day tomorrow.
