Its now clear this was a deliberate act by copilot Andreas Lubitz and there are some indications of possible motives. Allen pizzey is in his hometown. Good morning, allen. Reporter good morning. The story of Andreas Lubitz is taking on a life of its own. The german tabloids is describing what his former girlfriend said he is quoted as saying. Do something and everyone will know my name. Searches at his parents apartment home turn up documents of medical documents that suggestion Mental Illness and treatment. They include torn up sick leave notes one of them the day of the crash. Its not known what the note is for although its widely held he suffered from depression. It include a notation that he needed specific regular medical examination, which could refer to a physical or mental condition. No suicide note was found and there was no evidence of political or religious motives. The prosecutor say it will take several days to evaluate everything. Its triggered widespread cause for psychological screening of commercial pilots. Jeff pegues has that story. Reporter the nations Airline Pilots cannot do their jobs without first being cleared by doctors. That involves undergoing a physical exam and selfreporting on this online form whether theyve tried to commit suicide or have mental disorders, including depression or anxiety. A formal psychiatric examination is not required by the federal aviation administration. Thomas daily is the dean of the Aviation Program at Dowling College in new york. We cant just go along now with the system the way it is and hope for the best. At this time we have to go back now and say the psychological screening has to take place in more than one area at a time. Daily says the system should be more like what the military requires. Its pilots undergo flight physicals every year rigorous background checks and some branches requite Mental Health checks every month, which includes interviews with a commander, peers and a medical doctor. Since 2010 the faa has actually eased requirements as a way of encouraging pilots to report medical conditions ochbl a case be by casebasis pilots who take antidepressant medications like zoloft and prozac are now allow allowed to fly if theyve been under treatment successfully for manpower months. They say the regulations currently in place go far enough and that flight crews are trained to spot pilots going through Mental Health changes. At Reagan National airport for cbs this morning saturday, im jeff pegues. There is relief this morning for amanda knox. Yesterday italys highest court overturned her murder conviction. Knox breathed a sigh of relief outside her home in seattle. I just wanted to say that im incredibly grateful for what has happened for the justice ive received for the support that ive had from everyone, from my family, from my friends, to strangers, to people like you. You saved my life and im so grateful. Knox and her exboyfriend were accused of killing a fellow student in 2007. They were twice convicted and now twice acquitted. This puts the longrunning case to rest. Cbs news analyst Rikki Klieman joins us with more on that. Good morning. Good morning. Eight years, four verdicts. This is finally the end, but were you surprised by the outcome . I was absolutely stunned by the outcome and most legal experts before stunned. You have to understand what the options were for this high court. They could have simply confirmed the convictions and she was going back for 28 years. Her boyfriend would have been cuffed that night and he was going in for over 25 years. They could have overturned and sent it back to the Appeals Court for a new appellate trial. Definitely the considered opinion around the world through scholars of the logical outcome. And no one, i really do believe no one, including the lawyers every ever thought they would hear not only the word acquittal but annulled. This is ore. This is final. So let me ask you, rikki. The closing arguments went on fur for hours and they said it didnt add up. Do you think they were swayed by the media the press . I think the high court is certainly not deaf, dumb and blind. Theyre not supposed to be thinking about the press or outside influence. One important thing. Have a prosecutor who investigated this case and in that particular instance you have someone who has been accused of prosecutorial corruption in the past. It goes all the way back to the monster of florence and you have swhoun has evidence like a knife, lets take the knife, and it seems like the knife they could have used. So thats the type of evidence and the type of looksee to say what is in this case. Correct me if im wrong though. I remember when this case was playing out, she accused someone else. What happens with all of that . That was rbeally a problem for her. Her false accusation never sat well for anyone particularly the bartender. She was accused of defamation false accusation rngs she got three years, she was in prison for four years by waiting for this trial. So it is time served. He, by the way, the bartender was there to watch these proceedings. One of the things that looks that i do think has to affect a court even if they say it doesnt is that in the ultimate scheme of things, all the people in the u. S. Supporting amanda knox, people in italy supporting the victim mereditharyeredith kirchner. What was ultimately going to happen here . Was going become an International Crisis . Would the United States simply hand her over . Would they say theres a different system of double jeopardy there and not hand it over . This could have been very touchy politically. Italys system is very different. Very different but not to be condemned. Thank you very much. A Boston Police officer is in Critical Condition after being shot at a traffic stop. Well, here in lausanne talks have turned tough and negotiators say very serious in the past 24 hours. That explosive violence in the middle east has only added to the tension. Hanging over the Nuclear Negotiations is a middle east in disarray where an extraordinary dynamic is unfolding. The u. S. And iran are working alongside and against each other in several conflicts. The u. S. Is on the opposite side of iran in yemen, on the same side in iraq and against the Iranianbacked Assad regime in syria. Its really about what would make countries in the region safer. Really the revelation for louisville theyre in the ncaa tournament, he has played 111 combined minute ps in three of louisvilles tournament games and he only has twoover turnovers. Lets talk about kentucky. [lyc they crushed notre dame. Notre dame has the personnel to go over the top of kentuckys tee fence. I think if theres anything that weve learned throughout this season is youre not going to be able to penetrate against kentucky but it would take between 13 and 15 made threepoint shots to beat kentucky. The main thing about kentuckys win over West Virginia is this. Carl anthony to understand a freshman for kentucky is the perspective one or duo pick in the nba draft. He didnt have a made field goal and kentucky still won by 39 points. Thats something you cant make up. I think notre dame needs to hear about that. Dont irritate them. You irritated the baste. Yeah. Its unbelievable this is one year in the making. These two teams played in a regional epic fine. Same region. Wisconsin won by a point. Last year against wisconsin and 2011 when arizona lost to connecticut, arizona lost on the last possession. So literally hes two shots away from going to two final force. You know just in covering the sport, coaches always talk about the elite game as being the game with the most pressure because if you win that game and find your way on a College Basketball team, the final four. It is time now for morning rounlds with cbs news chief medical correspondent dr. Jon lapook and cbs contributor Holly Phillips. First up Angelina Jolie is making headlines again with her new revelation about cancer. Shes written in an oped shes had more elective surgery to reduce her chances of cancer by having her ovaries and fallopian tubes. She wants other women to know their options. She said her risk of Ovarian Cancer was 59d . She inharmted a gene called brca 1. Two years ago she had a double mass techmy. This month a false alarm and blood testing led to five anxious days before further tests found no signs of cancer. She wrote, to my rye leaf i still have the option of removing my ovaries and fallopian tools and i chose to do it. Thats a decision that laura understands well. She, too carries the brca 1 gene. So does her twin sister who developed breast cancer. A year after her fourth child she had her ovaries removed and underwent a double mastectomy. I my thought is i have power and im going to use it to my advantage. My future was im not getting cancer. Reporter s a result of the surgery, they entered menopause early. This reduces the risk of Ovarian Cancer in women with the brca 1 by 80 or more. Jolie wrote i feel at ease with what will come. Not because i am strong but this is a part of life. Theres nothing to be feared. You cant think about yourself. Its not about you. I think its the most selfish thing not to go ahead when you have people that love you and care about you. Those are two obviously two personal choice. But what are your overall thoughts for a woman, should she go surgery or enhanced screening . The problem with enhanced screening it doesnt temd to be very effective for Ovarian Cancer. Thats why people go ahead and do the operation. Theyre screened with a blood marker and right underneath everybodys eyes they can get the cancer. Thats why you go ahead and get the vacty. What was her decision in going public . Ive long been a fan of Angelina Jolie. She said she would plan to have her ovaries removed and what she learned along her journey. She did just that. Shes also using kind of her celebrity and influence for something good. There was something we called the Angelina Jolie effect where after she had her double mastectomy and having the brca 1 mutation, the number of women who got that test for the mutati mutation almost doubled. By definition, that saved some lives. A new record finds alzheimers cases among seniors is expected to triple by 2050 to 40 million. Tell us about the study because those staggering numbers. I have to say, these numbers really, really surprised me. You know we look at this number every 67 seconds somebody in the u. S. Develops it. By 20 50rks that will be every 23 seconds. One of the researchers found in this report says alzheimers disease is a triple threat. I thought a that was said perfectly. The number of cases are going up exponentially. We dont have perfect treatments yet. Some things seem to slow the course of the disease maybe but we need to develop something much, much more. The last thing is alzheimers is proving to be in creditably costly. By 2016 well spend 26 billion to care for patients having that disease. Its something that needs to be addressed first and foremost. Whos more at risk men or women . More women have it. Twothirds of people who have alzheimers are women. There are a number of reasons for that. Women live longer but also there could be life experiences. I have to say what surprised me mohs is some doctors are not telling their patients. The thinking is you dont want to upset them get them depressed. On the other hand what youre doing at the oechld the day is youre gipping the entire family from having that discussion oerl on to figure out what will you want later on down the line when you dont have the ability to reesend and you have to make decisions is when you come into the house. Woe saw that that with our models. I said what are you going to do. She can still reason now. I said what about later on . She said well i dont like having people in the house. Finally she said it would be okay for him to get help. Thats so crucial because i had another couple and they never had that discussion. Now hes taking care of her at home. She will not allow anyone to come in. She has dmenementia and fee heals so guilty. Most of my patient want to know absolutely everything. Every test result, anything that im thinking or anything that i find. There is something i think thats particularly scarey about alzheimers disease other than others, people think theyre going to lose control tochl be told you might live and not recognize your loved ones and function in the way that you usually do is scary in a way other conditions are not. So that adds to doctors telling patients the full story. Holly, there are experimental drugs right now. There are reports. What are the drugs . Just over the pafts week we heard of one very promising drug. We know two things happen in the brain. This new experimental treatment seems to lower the amount of amyloid plaque that builds up and even prevents the development of more and it also seems to slow down the progression of the disease. Right now it just went through a phase one trial. Very few patients over the course of a year. But its being essentially fast tracked and maybe this will be a promising thing. Next up a breakthrough on your breakfast trouble. A new study finds a cereal rich in cereal fiber, and whole grain could help the most. Those who ate it were 17 less likely to die than those who ate the least. And the latest study, if you to the gym, it could help men in the bedroom. They report better sexual function than other men who just sit around. I spoke to one of the study doctors and said what is the possible mechanism. She said it may produce or increase nigh trij option id. So there could be a psychological exercise. Also you feel healthier. You feel that vim and vigor. More willing to take your clothes off. And not falling asleep because were so tired. If you fall asleep during sex, thats a bad sign. Thats a bad sign. Dr. Jon lapook, dr. Holly phillips. Thanks so much. Up next, selling your data. Announcer this portion sponsored by voya financial. Changing the way you think of retirement. Good afternoon. Nice to meet you. Good to see you. Are you going to Fly Air Force one . That was president elect Barack Obamas first trip to one of the boeing 747 that backs air force one. The current planes are getting old and the pentagon wants to buy new ones. We were given extraordinary behind the scenesaccess with how they might come about. Mark albert is here this morning. Good morning, mark. Good morning. Theyre looking to to purchase three in place of two. Six stories actually twothirds of a football field long and carrying immeasurable prestige. More than hail to the chief, more than the ubiquitous secret Service Agents mean than the sacred seal theres nothing more impressive than air force one. It eucon to represent the power of the american presidency, the reach of the american presidency and its come to symbolize Americas Technology and prowess. Ken has wrote a book on air force one and has covered for president s. Hes flown on air force one about 300 times. What is it like to fly on a president ial aircraft . For the president , its fabulous. When they left office the think they missed most is air force one. Under their polished steer year theyre aging, now more than a quarter of a century old even though theyve only flown a fraction as much as a commercial 747 same age. The air force says its time for a new generation of president ial wings. Colonel amy mccain is in charge of ordering the new air force one and gave cbs news her First Television interview. Why that one . Its the only one left that is flying so it costs us a lot more time and money to keep that airplane flying than it used to. So its actually cheaper in the long run to replace it. Mccains team has grown from 20 people to 880 in just the past year, and will soon expand to 100. The longrange widebodied aircraft is made in everett, washington, and comes with a longer fuselage greater wing span and greater engines and arab on things. It doesnt come cheap. Updated budget documents provided by cbs newss by the air force showing its climbing this year and the numbers quickly gain altitude. More than 3 billion in total in the next five years. There are those who would say this aircraft does not night to be replaced. That the taj payers simply cant afford to byuy a new plane. How many planes are you buying . Were buying up to three. What is behind buying three instead of two . It depends on the availability of having two available for the pretty at any one time. If it takes off, it will end here at the Dayton Air Force museum. The museums historian Jeff Underwood said h terrorist of president ial aircraft is filled with triumph and turbulence. Franklin roosevelt was the first to fly when he was in office. This is the first aircraft. It has an elevator electric powered elevator. The four engine plane was named the sacred cow. Roosevelt flew on the plane only once before his death. Harry truman signed the document. This is the boeing 707 that took the First American president to china and carried eight press kents over 36 years. And if the walled could talk. Jackie kennedy developed the blue and white design. This flew the kennedys to dallas and the predecessor back to washington. It shows the one flight with two president s after Lyndon Johnson took the oath of office in the packed sweltering cabin. It took place right where were standing. Right where were sitting. George w. Bush was in the plane on 9 11 after it became a refuge for terror attacks. Underwood said the unique set of aircraft we now known as air force one has taken the country to new hates. This is not just the president s plane. Its the plane of the United States. Its a symbol of the United States and were the people of the United States. The air force hopes to sign the contract later this year. The goal is to have the new 747s flying the president eight years from now in 2023. Such a fascinating story. You always hear about the unwritten rules. We heard that there are two major unwritten rules when it comes to buys an air force one. It has to be in a second term. That guarantees that that current president its not politics. They will not be flying on the plane. The second unwritten rule is you have to buy american. Boeing is american. Its the only company that has four body wide nnch. Thats pretty cool. Who designed the exfear yore of the plane and the pand job . Jackie kennedy oversaw it. Then she put the chinese on board and others. Coming up if youre one of Many Americans who likes to buy things mate here heres a great idea for the spring good morning im Nicole Brewer.
