There are almost no relation ship between this white house and those on capitol hill and its probably a little late. The bourbon summit should have probably come at the beginning of the first term. How bad was this defeat would you say, for the president . Its pretty bad. It was a rejection by the voters over his leadership. Weve had stagnant wages for quite a while. The economy has been getting better, but for folks earning wages, theyre just not seeing that movement and thats what you saw on election day. The prlt peak the president peaked 2009 to 2011. Specific things. Concrete things. Big things simple things. Missed you guys. I havent done this in a while. We begin this half hour with an update on a story that underscores the deterioration of this countrys vital infrastructure. Since 2010 there have been more than 250 waterpipe leaks in los angeles and now the water system is getting some very poor grades as carter evans reports. One year later, holly, doctors are really baffled by this. Good morning, vinita. Although landon can eastt and drink and swallow, hes no longer hungry. His parents desperate for answers are now speaking out. Tell me what has this last year been like for you . Its hard to explain. You have a child whos running and playing and laughing and then you wake up one night and our world flipped upsidedown. Reporter for 12yearold landon jones, meal time has become anything but routine. How about your sandwich . All right. Well not bad. Reporter it all began last fall just days after celebrating his 11th birthday. Landon woke up one morning with absolutely no urge to eat or drink. He was dizzy and severely congested. A chest xray revealed a bacterial infection in his left lug and although that went away landons ability to be thirsty or hungry went away. What will he eat now . He wont. You can put food in front of him. Hell sit there all day and all night. Over the last year the 11yearold has lost 60 pounds. Not even trick or treating with his younger brother could tempt his appetite. The joneses search for answers has taken then to five different cities including rochester new york. This combination of loss of appetite and lot of thirst is something i have not encountered before. Reporter patterson believes the prop could lie in the boys hypothalamus, the portion of the brain that enables hunger thirst and regulates body temperature. Even on boost, he still continues to lose weight. Reporter while his dad sits with him at every meal encouraging him to eat, his mom debbie stocks the refrigerator with high protein snacks in the hope that something will encourage him to eat. Its very frustrating as a mother. I miss my little boy. I just miss landon. Your heart goes out to that family. It seems like they have really looked at a lot of possible different causes. Do they think at this point it could be psychological . Vinita, thats a really important evaluation. Landon has been evaluated by psychologists and psychiatrists and specialists to make sure its not related. Theres something physical going on. What happens if he continues losing weight. If he really continues to plummet, theyre going to insert a gastrostomy tube. That way hell remain safe and hisweight maintained until they can figure out another solution. Also this week man and bones. Osteoporosis is often considered a womens problem but it will cause men over 50 to break a bone. Theyre less likely as women to have a scan after a wrist fracture. Theyre less likely to be in treatment for the condition. John, what did the study tell us exactly . It was a study of women and men over age 50. They fell and that broke their wrist. The question is are their bones brittle and should they do an evaluation. It turns out only 8 of men got scan. 53 of women did. Once they got the scan, theyre far less likely to get a scan. Why is this a problemsome. It reminds me of heart disease. Women, youre not thinking about heart attack. You have to educate women about that. Women have a dramatic dropoff in their borne density when they hit menopause. So they do get osteoporosis and problem with their bones earlier in a much more serious way. However, men do catch up. They start to get age related bone loss and so its something we have to sort of keep in mind and not be thinking oh its a womans problem. It can also be a mens problem. Should all membership have scans to test their bone density . Its certainly to say if youre over 50 and youre male and youve fall and fractured your wrist, you should defer knitly be considered for screening. Part of the problem is there hasnt been a huge amount of data to show when its beneficial for men to be screen. We know a lot about when women start to loose their bone density. We havent had big studies about when is the best time to screen men. Whats unfortunate is tlr men arent being screened. The study shows men should be. If you shift work it could prematurely age your brain. They find people who work the night shift or other odd hours have lower brain function not the best news for all of us. Those with more than ten years of shift work had the same results as someone 6 years or older. Feeling the burn . About 20 of American Adults suffer from heartburn, also known as acid reflux. Its on the rise and we spend billions on medication each year. The solution may be simple. Eat dinner earlier. Jon, what is heartburn . The stomach is fine with it. It kind of likes that. The swallowing tube hates that. Theres a valve that keeps it. When it burples, also called a hiatal hernia. Do they really think eating late at night is it . Its a big part of it. Not only when but what. Some of the culprits are junk foods, processed foods, foods high in sugar and fat. When you look at people in european countries, they eat less and less processed foods and less processed food. Being overweight and inactive its lifestyle. What should we do . I always give the same spiel. Anyone that gives you an iota of pleasure, you have to cut it down, alcohol, fatty foods, mints, chocolate smoking. Everything in moderation. If it doesnt hurt its okay. Have it early in the morning. Sometimes the lactate you have or coffee you have can give you heartburn at night. You want to ruin everything. Thank you, jon. A new study finds that babes hear three more times the words from mothers than fathers. They put microphones on the babies and told them to turn them on when the parents were around. The results suggest that papas could do their babies some good by talking some more. I want to say im really shocked but im not. My girls always say why are you talking so much. You know listening is important too. Were teaching our kids how to do that. Also i dont think children have this problem if their fathers are broadcasters im just saying. Thank you so much. Up next why so many people hate their jobs. Plus things you could do to be happier at work. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. Did you know enamel is your teeths first line of defense . Thats from the cult classic office space, and its a good bet that someone you work with is just as unhappy with his or her job or maybe you are. A survey shows that three or four out of four employees say they dont feel strongly about their jobs. Its spawned an entire industry to talk about what to do to fix it. Bob is the author of the bosss survival guide. Good morning. Good morning. How much is this a problem . Its huge. There was a Holiday Party somebody wrote to me about and they handed everybody an envelope when they were coming in. It took a while for them to open the envelope. They realize theyd were pink slips. They were all laid off. Its tough out there. Whats interesting about the book is you sort of give it a time frame. You say people were always satisfied but after the recession people really started changing. I received thousands of emails. I thought we had hit bottom. People are still frustrated. People feel overworked, Underappreciated Companies communicate poorly but the bottom line is people get upset when being treated like paw pers when the executives are getting huge paychecks. The fact of the matter is when people are unhappy, its bad for the business. It is. Companies found when people are happy, theyre more productive and more profitable. The recession created a lot of bad management and thats really the problem. You hear about these Companies Like googles and zappos who have fresh perks. Do those actually help . Im going to upset all the very begans out there. Theres icing and cake. Icing tastes good. The bottom line is the cake. People have to feel respected and paid properly. Perks wont overcome that. There is one company, a tiny company thats taking a survey of their employees every week. Whats happening there . Tiny pulse is interesting. They listen to what employees are saying and they encourage management to act on it. Its not enough to make noise. Youve got to do something. I think thats a good trend in the workplace. Conversation with your workers and a continueing conversation. A lot of companies when they have problems they want to pay for resources. You can solve it right in your own building. Members of the girl scouts in the usa including the adults who lead and work with them has dropped by 400,000 in recent years from 3. 2 million to 2. 8 million. Kelly, good morning. Thank you so much for having me. This is such a fascinating topic. Lets start off. Why are the numbers down do you think, in terms of membership . Its a trend we see with all youth serving organizations including the boy scouts. Its not like when a corporation dont reach their numbers. These are real girls who are missing out on the opportunity to learn essential life and leadership lessons. We know the program works. Of our 59 million adult alumni, you can see them running major corporations, Small Businesses in the country or a majority of women in elected office. So we want to bring this experience to more girls and we need volunteers to help us do that. Youre having a problem with volunteers as well. What do you think is going on that youre not attracting the volunteers that you used to . Im sure it create as problem in attracting girl scouts as well. Whats going on . We have 30,000 girls currently on waiting lists across the country. For every volunteer who signs us takes five girls off the list. How do we make the volunteer easier and seamless for adults. So were investing in technology and looking at how the minute an adult raises their hand that they can actually go online, sign up get real time information all digitally. This is a transition. In 2011 you guys said yes, people think of camping skills and listening skills. Its a backlash. They say thats not what this group is about. Why were people upset . I thing one of the stories we havent told about girl scouts is how for over 100 yearlies we have been providing girls with cutting edge skills they need to be successful in the modern world. Certainly camping and cooking is part of that but since our inception we had a focus on what we call the stem field. In as early as 1930 we were teaching girls how to rewire things and aviation. And so we know where the jobs of the future are and where girls interests are. Were girlled and girldriven and we go where girls are and girls are interested in the fields of science and toke gy and engineering and math and we know theyre skills they need to be successful in the future. So how do you go out given all the competition and there is so much competition for kids attention these days how do you go out and get the message delivered to the girls themselves . Right now were running our First Ever National campaign to attract volunteers on facebook and we reached over 9 million potential volunteers. Girls want to do this. Were enlisting our current volunteers, we have almost a million Adult Volunteers to tell their friends about how to join and its as simple as going to girl scouts. Org and entering your zip code to find out where you can find a troop in your community. Youve got a slogan in your community, are you man enough to be a girl. Girl scout. And thats a real opportunity we see for growth with our volunteers because currently only 5 of men are volunteering and we know there are so many fathers and men who care about girls and want to invest in girls. And so we think girl scouts is a great opportunity for them. I also think its very impressive. I was looking over the list. You mentioned laura bush, condoleeza rice taylor swift, including a lot of people in this building were girl scouts. Thanks so much. Thank you for having me. Amazon amazons Editorial Team has read over a quarter of a million jobs is and has con densed them to the top ten. Sara nelson is here to reveal for the first time which books and authors made the cut. Sara, good morning. Hi. You went through 500 books. At least. And the book of the year. Okay. Its not a blockbuster. It wasnt a big book you probably heard a lot about but its the book we love from the first line. Its called everything i never told you by celeste ng. Its about a child lost in the 70s. Its like the book called the lovely bones which was popular a few years back. Its gotten a lot of good reviews but now i hope it gets it. It was a bit of a sleeper in terms of where it was on the list. A little bit of a sleeper, but it was the one book that we were the most passionate about. Everybody who read it in my group loved it and so we just went with it. Lets go on. You have as the second book all the light we cannot see by scrivener, a division of simon schuster. Whats is it about . A german boy and girl living in places and getting ready for war that they dont realize is happening and eventually they meet. Its not like a big romantic commercial meet. Its a beautiful book. Anthony doerr is a great righter. Number three is a chilling account of the north pole in the kingdom of ice. Did you read the perfect storm . Yes. Its like that. Intriguing. Number 4, the short and tragic life of robert peace. Its a memoir. Its a memoir. Its about a young man who came out of newark an africanamerican kid who got a scholarship, was brilliant, went to yale ended up back in yale. The book is called the short and tragic life so a way to not ruin it. It was written by his roommates and best friend who went back to try to figure out what happen and what went on. Its a book about race class, friendship, and family. The mother in this book rob peaces mother is a purist most wonderful character. There are a few debut authors like number 5. Phil klay, redeployment which is about the iraq war. Its about the iraq war and soldiers. Its not all on the battlefield. Some take place in the battlefield but its mostly about these guys men and women during the war, after the war, people who work alongside soldiers who are not necessarily enlisted. Its a strong book and klay is a veteran. Its fiction but clearly he knows what hes talking about. Stephen kings new book revival came in at six. Are there a number of authors who have been on the list before . There are a lot of authors. Stephen king is somebody everybody knows. I dont know how he does it. He comes out each year with one better than the next. This is about the 1960s. Its about drugs, its about faith, its about all the things that stephen king is about. It has a little horror in it. You have to have a little horror in a stephen king no vel. When you go through these books and obviously theres so many different topics and genres, what are you looking for . Were looking for stuff we love. Were opinionated. You should come to one of our meetings sometimes. Youll hear how opinionated we are. We read a lot. We have special interests. Were looking for something thats going to move us grab us were not interested in blockbuster, in names necessarily. Were interested in picking up a book and saying ive gotten to call in sick. It seems youve picked up books from different genres different ages different interests. Right. We have a group with a lot of interests. You were unanimous. Yes. All right. Sara nelson thank you. Twentytwo year old student was shot in the thigh and is in stable condition. The suspects remain on the loose. Now, checking the forecast with carol. Hey, carol . It is bright out there also very chilly out there. Pull up the blind finds a lot of sunshine this morning through Center City Philadelphia and weve got lots of sunshine at the shore as well. But the sun really isnt doing enough for our temperatures, theyll remain only 50 degrees this afternoon we notice few clouds off to the north, otherwise, things are looking lovely around here, if you like it cold. 38 degrees, right now in philadelphia, 35 trenton 37 degrees in wilmington, the colds he is morning that weve seen so far this season, through philadelphia with temperature of 34 degrees. 50 degrees for our High Temperature today gets little milder tomorrow, though, with a high of 56. And by monday, tuesday we could be in the 60s nicole . Carol, thanks so much. Next update is at 8 57. Im nicole brewer. See you then. We begin this half hour with the dish. Anthony is already excited about the drink. Dont say that. Award winning chef chris kuhn is just 30 years old. He started out washing dishes at a Seafood Restaurant on bostons shore. Now hes executive chef and opener of three top restaurants. Bostons best french magazine restaurant for 2014 and one of the best new steak houses by food wine magazine. Chris kuhn, welcome to the dish. What have you brought with us this morning . We brought dishes from boston chop which is our boston steak house, we have these huge prime bonein. Theyre about 14 ounces each. It was actually featured on the cover of food wine magazine in february, so that was really an honor to see that happen. Then weve gottet a rendition of a baked potato. This is what i called. A rendition. Yeah. I never went to a steak house where i enjoy add baked powe taytatopotato. So i decided to create the twice baked potato with poutine gravy and its all melded in. Yeah. Its really quite nice. Then weve got one of my favorite full satisfying dishes that we actually serve at all three restaurants which is french onion soup. It has a rich broth and a cheese originating from france. Then we have seasoned Brussel Sprouts with a little bit of bacon. It makes it extra delicious and a little bit of sherry vinegar, bacon, really really tasty stuff. And then for dessert a little chocolate cheesecake with local cranberries. And to wash that down. Youre killing me. Its going to be a good meal. This is called the andrea gail. That uses a local spiced rum which is a cape cod distillery and they make this really cool artisan flavorful rum and were going to enjoy that today. Lets talk a little bit about you though. You knew you wanted to be a chef in high school and i read you were even taking like cooking classes on top of your regular classes. How did you know . Right. 20 years ago it wasnt that cool to be a chef yet. From age 10 to 11 i just knew that i wanted to cook. I didnt really come from a family of cooks, but i did have a neighbor that owned a Seafood Restaurant and as soon as i was old enough look at that. Oh yeah. So basically i started working in my neighbors restaurant. I just got addicted to the nermg and the people and the rush and ive always been super, super energetic and its been a rush for me. You got the job because you needed the work, right . Thats really how it started. In middle school when i saw kids with nike airs and baseball cards, i wanted them and my father was like youre going to have to earn money to get the things you want and thats the way life works. Thats the lesson i learned. You mentioned money. Your restaurants are doing very well. I think e saw of the three restaurants you bring in 10 million. Whats it like . Its really all about the team and i have tremendous japanese restaurant and managers. Honestly from the bottom up we employ so many passionate people who just love love love working in the restaurants and make sure the guests experiences are as good as can be on the a nightly basis. You started with two restaurants. The boston chop . Its about 300. I had never worked in a restaurant with over 100 seats and i went and opened boston chop with 165. Its a completely different animal. How do we feet that many people and keep the quality as high as possible. Thats been the biggest challenge with that but i love it. I have to say, i love this potato. It is not your ordinary potato. I want to hand you this dish and ask you as we get your signature if you could have this peel with anyone, who would it be . If i could have it with three people i would like to have it with Thomas Keller first off whos been a great culinary inspiration of my career. Secondly id like to have it with anthony bourdain. Hed seem like a pretty fun guy to have dinner with. Calm. Ard thirdnd thirdly my grandmother on my fathers side the french side. I was definitely looking for an escape. I definitely had an idea my tribe, whoever they were they would be there. I never found them. I found dave and found a tribe in him. Lennox and dave tribe formed the euro rhythmics. And through the 80s had a run of influential hit records. We collaborated in a particular way. We were really in tune with each other. It was almost tell pathic. I dont mean that to be whoo, but we really understood each other really well. It was fantastic. One thing that was so striking about your arrival was not just your voice, but it was your fashion as well. I mean there almost seemed to be a statement in that. I think there is. I will change the word if you dont mind. Ill say style. Fashion is something so temporary and something you chase. Were you trying to make an impact with your style . Absolutely. But i was trying to i think, become the persona that i wanted to express. Lennox whos been critical of overtly sexual performances by contemporary artists like miley cyrus, was rebelling against that in her own time. This aspects of gender or gender equality and what it is to be a woman, youre so very often on jekty feed. I didnt want to be that person. I fell very empowered in the costume that i was wearing whatever it happened to be. When the your rhythmics split in the 90s lennox launch add solo career. But then the singer who sold more than 80 million records, decided to put the brakes on it all i did start feeling like i need to get off this truck. That was my sense. It was like, you know what .
