As we pause to give thanks this weekend, consider thinking nature for this. Yosemite national park, its a wonder and those who protect its beauty deserve our gratitude, too. Especially 9yearold ranger gabe lavan. Ranger gabriel a wildfire started. The firefighters need your help putting it out. [ sirens ] engine responding. Race to the scene with wild excitement. Because as flames were leaping at that dry brush all the cares gabe had in the world were going up in a puff of smoke. Were you scared . No. How come . Because im brave. Yes, you are. Gabe wasnt only bravely battling the fire that day, battling a life threatening disease. And i have like where i cant walk that far. It hurts a lot . It hurts like every day. Every day. Uhhuh. What do you do . Deal with it. The disease hes dealing with has weakened gabes connective tush u, his skin and his joints. For him just living is painful. What do you tell your mom . I tell my mom like it hurts real bad. Sometimes if it hurts real bad you have to go to the doctor. Amount of strength it must take you to get through this, i cant even comprehend it. Thats gabes mom, karen. Watching her son suffer is a pain all its own. Because hes so severe, i dont know what i have no idea when hes going to hit that threshold of tremendous pain and how are we going to work with that. I dont know. Theres no way is is forever for gabe. If she could wish his illness away, she would. Instead she did the next best thing. She helped gabe make a wish of his own. Make a wish. Youve probably heard of the makeawish foundation. The walls of the National Headquarters in phoenix, arizona, are lined with the sick kids. Jacob wanted to be a baker. Caleb wanted to have his own elephant. Then there was steven who just wished to work in a pickle factory. Theres a lot more to this than just sending a family to an amuse i can park. This is not a fluffy just nice thing that we do. This is really, really important. David williams is the makeawish president and ceo. It is not a dying wish, not a last wish. This is a wish that in many cases going to help them get better. Contrary to what most people think makeawish doesnt just grant wishes to kids with a terminal disease. Any child with a potentially lifethreatening condition, like gabes, is eligible. Gabes wish was just to be far away from the white walls and fluorescent lights of big city hospitals. You can tell what general type of insect. A beetle. It is. For once he was the one doing all the poking and prodding. As a park ranger for a day, gabe wasnt just participating in rescue drills. Up on three. He was rescuing his his whole family from the daily reality of his illness. Everybodys first wish for a child to survive their illness. Some of them do, some of them dont. Even with the ones who dont, ive had conversations with parents who will say today, that was the greatest week of our familys life. Those experiences all started with one sick child 35 years ago his trucks and cowboy boots. His name was Chris Greicius. He was diagnosed with leukemia given just three years to live. But before that three years was up, his mom says chris was determined to become a phoenix Police Officer. He just loved everything about them. When the sirens and uniform and authority figures. Maybe in some way gave him a little extra fight for life. There was no Fundraising Organization back then, no volunteers. Just a few Arizona Department of Public Safety officers who wanted to help. Yearold Chris Greicius was awarded the honorary rank of patrolman in late april. As his illness worsened, he took a ride in a police helicopter. Got him a uniform. Tailor stayed up all night making sure it was small enough. Makeawish was born. You could see the pride in his face. He made it. He did it. Just two days after getting that uniform, chris passed away. He was laid to rest in it at the age of seven. I dont think theres words to describe it. I really dont. More enjoyment than probably what hed known in a long time. What did it mean for you . As you can see from the tears, lot of joy for me. This was something that i was helpless to do. I couldnt have done this. That was 250,000 wishes ago. Which all paved the way for kids like 12yearold jackie battling muscular dystrophy to have her wish granted, too. How are you feeling today . Happy. Abraham was the makeawish staffer in charge of making jackies wish come true. That was good. When i first met her first thing she said was princess. Before i said hello. Closest princess key find in new york city was actress laura austin who played cinderella on broadway. Abraham knows the power of a wish and what this all meant for jackie. Because this was abraham 12 years ago after being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Wish to see canopy of stars at sea. So, makeawish booked him on a cruise. Now that hes in remission hes returning to makeawish favor. Absolutely did. Impacted me a way i knew that i wanted to give back. Which gets us back to gabe whose wish ended with an unexpected flourish. We wish to petition the court that gabriel become honorary park ranger today. Real judge showed up with real power to swear gabe in as a Yosemite Park ranger. So help me god. I congratulate you. You have taken the oath. You wanted more . I thought it was like mean better than you thought . Yeah. So, as we give thanks for all of lifes fortunes this weekend i want to be a super here glow theres a place that makes wishes come true each and every day. Osgood next, the man, the jar. Youre gonna learn to deal with alot of pain. But it is nothing like the pain that shingles causes. Man when i got shingles it was something awful. It was like being blindsided by some linebacker. You dont see it coming. Boom it was this painful rash of little blisters. Red, ugly stuff. Lots of em. Not a good deal. If youve had chicken pox, uhhuh, we all remember chicken pox. Well that shingles virus is already inside of you. It aint pretty when it comes out. Now im not telling you this so that youll feel sorry for me. Im just here to tell you that one out of three people are gonna end up getting shingles. I was one of em. Take it from a guy whos had his fair share of pain. You dont want to be tackled by shingles. Osgood try as we might, no way to match the number of pies you can find in one southwestern desert town. Bill geist will show us a slice of life. Lonely stretch of highway in new mexicos high desert, galaxies light years away are more easily found than lunch. Im starving out here. This sign seemed a mirage. Suddenly the restaurant appeared. Oh, my, goodness. This is wonderful. Delicious. A plethora of pies. Theres more. When kathy knapp first came here on family road trip 20 years ago, pie town was just an illusion. The sign on the door said there used to be pie in pie town, aint no more. No pie. It has now sale. My mother said, you buy it ill bake the pies, they will come. Its pie town. Which seemed rather impulsive reaction. See place thats closed youre on vacation you just buy it. My mother wanted to built the pie back in pie town. Because she knew she could. She was a pie lady. Did people come . No. Not at first. I need pie. Voila. But today pie pilgrims come from far and wide. I see them wanting to take a road trip like my mother took us get off the highway go to the little strange places where people still talk to people and let their children feel that experience that they are not going to get on an interstate. This is great. Oh, boy. What was the next one . Running out of pie. Astonishingly a second pie place, the good pie cafe opened just down the road. Owner and Baker Michael rawl. Kathy is a wonderful woman, are your pies better . Of course. People would love to see us like in some sort of competition but were actually good friends. We at our days open so that there is always a place open for people. There is a responsibility to have pie here, i feel it. Obligation. It is. Im starving, how about you . These guys ridden all the way down the Continental Divide trail from canada. Looking forward to this for about ten days of motorcycle riding. That is so good. Like the power of pie. An obsession. That and maybe the altitude. At 8,000 feet theres a lack of oxygen youll get a little giddy and happy. We call it pie happy. It is heaven. So how did this high happy place come by its name . Why not cakeville. Or profiterol heights. In 1922 a guy named clyde norman was headed across and it was the highway he broke down started making pies on the side of the road in order to get going again. Hence the name. Pie town. Kathryn Roberts Family came here in 1936 fleeing the depression and the dust bowl along with hordes of others. Kathryn having the pinto bean pie. Going one way or the other and they would stop. Over the years such Hard Scrabble pioneers settled pie town. Pioneers like kathy, she put the pie back in pie town. What kind of pie are you having . Theres only one way to get it. Its perishable. Point of purchase pie. They are great. Got to come toe pie town. Its worth the drive. Osgood ahead. When i was younger osgood lyrics by the beatles seen as well as heard. And civil war battlefields. Still embattled. Osgood songs by the beatles have never failed to delight their listeners. Now many of the words of those songs on paper are delighting library goers as well. Mark phillips will take us browsing. On a busy road in london sits British Library and collection of about 170 million Literary Works and historic documents. Some of them are given pride of place in the treasures gallery. Original works of shakespeare, handwritten musical scores by beethoven, the magna carta. And this, a collection of original lyrics of beatles songs scribbled on scraps of paper or the backs of envelopes. Or on a childs card. Yesterday. Yes, all my troubles seemed so far away ticket to ride. I think im going to be sad a hard days night. Its a hard days night the music seemed everlasting but the lyrics were disposable, throw aways. I was until Hunter Davies picked them up. The beatles never seemed, never seemed to have any papers in the house, they had massive houses but never had stationary or note pads when song came to them, music did. But going around the house, give me some paper. Hunter davies is now assembled the scraps, those he collected when he hung around with the beatles as their official biographer. Thats him on the lower left with the band in the marahishi and with paul on family vacation. He took his lyrics and those he borrowed from others and put them in to a book once the songs were recorded the beatles lost interest in the tribble notes. Im going to write about this song, this being a scrap of paper on which they scribbled the words. The words would be perhaps changed, perhaps ringo come in, this is what were doing tonight. They would say, yes, you can have them because cleaners would burn them. And those original lyrics told secrets of how the songs came to be. Thats john scribbling out which says, when we were young, much younger than we were today. Having trouble with that line. He crosses it out and one below is the one, when i was younger, so much younger than today. I never needed anybodys help in any way and memorable pop lyric was born on whatever scrap of paper was handy. This one here hard days night which is the theme from the film. And that particular manuscript is written on the back of a childrens birthday card to julian, johns son. But when somebody suggested change john agreed. That line is a bit poor. John said, youre right. Immediately gets his pen out crosses out the line changes it to the things that you do. But whatever the cultural significance ever hard days night should it and the magna carta are in the same room . Its only the magna carta. Never get in the top ten. Hunter davies tells the story of this scene wean the between opened the librarys new building in 1998 she provided royal lesson as to why the beatles are not out of place here. When she opened it, she walked around. But she couldnt stand long here because she cant read many of the latin any more than you can or i can. She stood longest at this case just opposite few feet away reading yesterday. Because she knows the words of yesterday because shes a human being alive on the planet. Its also very nicely written. That nicely written, yesterday may be the most covered song in history but the tune was written long before the words. To fill the gap Paul Mccartney would sing the phrase scrambled eggs until he came up with yesterday. And sometimes the oddest words were mixed together. Johns unfinished lament on lifes binalities was combined with the scrap of an idea from paul. Came in the studio at the end of sergeant pepper with two scraps that were not connected. Their producer, george martin, took the scraps together in to what became a day in the life. The beatles the bigger they become, there are 2,000 books. Probably 5,000 people studying the beatles at american university. Get a phd out of that. Now got a lot more material to work with once worthless scraps of paper are now worth a lot of money. Some of these are worth a Million Dollars each. Really . Thats what theyre being sold for. Smallest scrap probably quarter Million Dollars. They are the gift that keeps on giving. Osgood ahead, remembering a mystery writer p. D. James. Man [ laughs ] those look like baby steps now. But they were some pretty good moves. And the best move of all . Given her popularity and years of Public Service including a stint as war time red cross nurse, no mystery why she was made a baroness is in 1991. P. D. James of holland park was 94. Next, performance artist Marina Abramovic. And her body of work. Osgood new list of the 100 most powerful people in the contemporary art world ranks Marina Abramovic as number five. Really quite a body of work as Serena Altschul is about to show us. Marina abramovic is not known for painting canvases or shaping clay. Shes a performance artist. And for 40 years shes been making art in her own body. In 2010 she staged her most famous performance to date, the artist is pregnant. She sat silently in a chair at the museum of modern art in new york city for three months and people gazed in to her eyes. Tell me about what happens when youre sitting across from someone. Some of the 750,000 souls who heeded her call seemed hypnotized, some wept. As for barack obama rich sitting stills for hours caused pain in her hands, legs and her spine. The pain, the understanding that you can control the pain. The pain is okay. But you might say that pain is marinas medium and her message, deal with it. Back in 1973 she jabbed the spaces between her fingers at times drawing blood. Shocking stuff but to hear the art world tell it serious important work that breaks boundaries. Its greatness. Sean kelly was the first gallery own tore represent her work internationally. I think that marinas profound ability to touch people comes from the fact that she never felt she was loved enough. She was born in 1946 in belgrade, then the capita tall of yugoslavia. Her parents argued violently with each other and abramovic says her mother beat her. The worst childhood you have the better artist you become. Just the fact that my never really kissed me was such a huge, painful thing in my life that damaged me so much. Were you wilder as a young woman as teenager. I had to rebel to create my own space. It was a space that was hers and hers alone. When i was starting the performance, everybody was thinking ridiculous, think they are not art in the first place. For years people ask, why is this art. When do you think that stopped . Unlike her legendary show at the museum of modern art this is not performance art. Basic extend from my brain. Because shes known as someone with remarkable mind control, neuroscientists recently brought her to an historic soundproof chamber at bell labs in new jersey. We are measuring the differences in her brain as shes changing her mental state. To watch her brain waves as she made sounds. Being the subject of experiments, putting one bodies through painful performances and planning new shows can take a toll on an artist. Do you get to spend good deal of time. Since 2007 shes come to starshaped house in upstate new york to recharge. What do you call this place . My paradise. She was married twice and for 12 years lived and worked with another performance artist, a west german known as ulay. Yes, the slapping was performance. But today she is here alone. Her archives are here. Theyre all labeled and numbered. Yes. There are 26 acres of meadows and orchards. Her favorite tree is here. Everybody has to find their own tree, you know. I like it. Its gorgeous. You come to nature and hug it. We hug together. This is the place where shamed takes which is what lady gaga did to study abramovics medication. Shes a good student. She doesnt cheat. Her current show goes all the way to nearly nothingness. Theres no art. Absolutely nothing to sell. She asks the audience to put own noise canceling headphones, wear a blindfold make the performance themselves. Her next idea to raise funds, to build institute in upstate new york, to present and preserve performance art. And recently she thanked hundreds of her donors with hugs. I hugged 600 people that day. I stay there hug every single person. That was very moving moment. Today the little girl who never felt enough love gets more than most people could handle. Osgood coming up why do they do Steve Hartman on Country Music road trip. Osgood from grand opera to beer hall classics drinking songs have been around for a good long time. Steve hartman Country Music. I knew my kids had drinking issues but i didnt know how bad they had gotten until i saw them sprawled out on the Kitchen Floor the other day. 4yearold emmett and 6yearold brother george were writing out list of the top 40 country songs. If you havent listened to country lately i have some sobering news. Nashville is alcohol poisoning the minds of our young people. Theyre really good songs. Rum. Those are just a few of their favorite titles my kids got hooked on drinking songs mostly thanks to this man, his name is kix brooks. Half of the duo brooks and dunn also hosts syndicated radio show, American Country count down. We used to listen to his show on the way to swimming lessons at first i didnt know the kids were even paying attention to the lyrics. Until the questions started coming. Why do they do a little day drinking . Questions i was hoping to avoid until after first grade. Once i realized what was happening we cut way back on the country. But the songs were already embedded in their little brains. Day drinking what are you singing . Yes, i felt bad. It wasnt like he was actually drinking but at the same time i didnt want to let this vice go unchecked. Why are drinking songs so popular . That would be a question for kix brooks. It wasnt a bad idea. Which is why i took the boys to nashville. To pose it to him. Why are drinking songs so popular . Because sometimes glad i wasnt the only one stumped. Songs are about all different kinds of stuff. Kicks went on to tell basically little kids are not their target audience. But also had some insight for me. As a parent, youve got to have the conversation with your kids at some point. Saying this is an opportunity . A wonderful opportunity. I hate to admit it, but hes right. Because of those songs ive had many healthy discussions with my boys that i would have never had. Plus kix says trends are cyclical. Those cowboys will be singing about something else. I just may need a drink. Almost religion, thats what i learned. Osgood ahead, chris rock with mo rocco. Id love to host the oscars again. Osgood later, the perils of the handshake. When rock hosted the oscars in 2005 the academy was not amused. Clint eastwood, thats a star. Did you feel that the audience was taking this event very seriously . Its the oscars. They are almost a religion. Thats what i learned when i hosted. I would say things like, you cant really judge art, you know, picasso or rembrandt. They dont want to hear that. Its the oscars. There are winners and losers. We judge art here. Id love to host again. Some comics like Kathy Griffin have no apology policy. She will not apologize for a joke. No apology policy. You got to go to some club. You still have to go there to work on it. You really have to go there. When you go in to a club now when you have kids, your kids finally go to bed, something so peaceful about a house with sleeping children. Its like, you dont believe it. Hes around sleeping children. Like that is the greatest sound in the world. Thats greatest quiet in the world. Sound of sleeping children. Still, chris rock isnt about to retire. Theres one other job he has thought about. I would love to work on 60 minutes. That is only job id consider taking. Are you serious . I would fay 60 minutes. If you did a story for 60 minutes, what would you want to interview . I would go to ferguson right now and interview white people. Whatever stories on race they talk to black people. Id love to just interview white cops. The question isnt why they shoot so many black kids, which is horrible. The real question is, how come you never shoot it would kids . Thats the question. Let me ask one more. Ask one more question. Why did you kill Nicole Brown Simpson . What . This is going to be a huge let down. Too careful when they talk about race. Not that people are too careful i think people in general just are too quick to call things racist. Sometimes people say things that are racist are just out of not knowing any better. Once they know better theyre like, im sorry, i didnt know that offended you like that. You think sometimes behavior like that is branded as racist. Racist or homophobic. People just not knowing. Then they or makes them actually become racist. Like, i was just asking a question. They got chris rock has never had a hard time speaking his mind and the response has been well worth it. Whats the best feeling you can give somebody. You can have sex with them. Or you can make them laugh. Pretty much if youre married to the person. People stop talking to people they have sex with. People shun them for life. People never get rid of people that make them laugh. Osgood ahead. The fight to preserve our battlefields. People with type 2 diabetes come from all walks of life. The 4 51 is leaving at 4 51. They cut the power. Itll fix itself. Powers back on. Quick thinking traffic lights and self correcting power grids make the world predictable. Thrillingly predictable. Osgood some wore blue. Some wore grey. Every soldier played a role in shaping our history. Shouldnt there be place where they did battle be considered Hallowed Ground . Here is Martha Teichner. 150 years ago today, november 30th, 1854, union and confederate soldiers fought their way across this tennessee field just as these reenactors are doing. But in the actual battle of franklin a crippling defeat there were almost 10,000 real casualties. Nearly 1500 of the confederate dead are buried nearby. They all died to basically make us america. I first came here in 2005 to tell the story of best selling author hubert hics who made his mission to save the franklin battlefield. When you look today at the battlefield, what do you see . I see targets and businesses. This next decade undo some of that. In 2005 if you stood in the cemetery looked over the fence you saw a golf course. Hundreds of the soldiers buried here died there. The golf course is the largest undeveloped piece of property left in the battlefield. If we failed on the golf course then we would have never gone on. The golf course is a park now and franklin has become the poster child for something almost unheard of, a major victory in the war to reclaim civil war battlefields. Parts of them disappear every day. We guestimate at about 30 or 40 acres a day because of development. Its going very fast. James light eyeser heads the self war trust which raises money to save endangered properties. This is where the battle was joined in this general area here. And thats what the battle of gettysburg started. It began here. Yeah. Gettysburg the site of the bloodiest battle became National Military park in the 1895. Significant landmarks were left out including confed rad general robert e. Lees headquarters. When you see a motel next to what was lees headquarters, is this an affront to you . Yeah. Sacrilege. Its destruction of part of american history. For 120 a night you can actually stay upstairs, that is for awhile longer. The Civil War Trust is raising 5. 5 million to buy and restore the property and tear down the motel next door. When it comes to preserving land its really all about money. Theres nothing else to it. They get you no where. According to the Civil War Trust 42 of the principle battlefields have been lost or close to it, casualties to development. The fight are not always black and white. Good guys against bad guys. And civil war sites are not the only concern. Such an important event should not be forgotten. For example, the battle over the battle which was here in princeton, new jersey, during the American Revolution in january 1777. One of the most important battles in american history. Washington didnt win that many out right victories as we did here. This was this is monumental. This built his reputation. On one side youve got jerry hour witnesses. What youre doing is than amount to spitting in the eye of the american people. On the other side this area that you see is where the individual home lots would be. John masten representing the institute for advanced study, a community of world we nouned scholars which wants to build faculty housing on seven acres it owns on what may or may not be a battlefield. How do you balance the 21st century against the 18th. The view that any land over which troops moved or where any shots were exchanged is automatically can be preserved is how to apply in princeton because so much has happened since 1777 and its not just large residential neighborhoods but also important institutions in the community. So its the place where Albert Einstein worked and j. Robert oppenheimer the father of the abomb against the father of our country, george washington. Who deserves to win. Last wednesday franklin, ten, came one demolition closer to reclaiming another big piece of its battlefield. Thanks in part to robert hicks and julian bibb. The battlefield which had been looked at as forgotten or way too ex pen to do. That took the convincing. And once that began to ham it completely changed locally and statewide. Its a pleasure to have yall today. At the carter house this we probably have over 100,000 people come to franklin, heritage tours. The worst part of the fighting was around here between the carter house now a museum and this memorial. A pizza hut when we first came to franklin in 2005. Since then, its been now you see it, now you dont. One property after another gone just like dominos which will be going away in january. All to make way for 20 acre park on the reclaimed land. The price tag 14 million so far from private donations, to Civil War Trust and the city, state and federal government. This is Hallowed Ground. I dont know how to say it any other way. Something holy happened here. Who knew that we would still be fighting the battle of franklin today, 150 years after the fact. The front line then are the front lines now. Osgood ahead. In the opinion of our contributor faith salie. About time we get a grip on the handshake. That ubiquitous gesture, politicians, athletes and Business People alike depend on it to demonstrate trust and respect. But in the wrong hands affection can become infection, shaking hands is a pretty good way the get yourself sick. Not necessarily with ebola but with a million other germs that can cause colds and flu. The custom of clasping hands is thought to date back thousands of years as proof not old holding any weapons when you shake someones hand you may be bearing or receiving a different kind of weapon, germs. We can all give a healthy high five to dr. Ignaz semmelweis. In 1847 he figured out length between clean hands and healthy patients. Back then his call for hand washing was radical even offensive to doctors. Yes, apparently still hasnt totally caught on. Research shows that todays hand washing rate in hospitals hovers around 40 . You can keep yourself by washing your hands but are you really doing it right . Did you know youre supposed to soap and scrub for as long as it takes to sing your abcs . And then theres problem of making clean escape. If you grasp the bathroom door handle to exit without using a paper towel youre right back with who knows whose germs. Recent study found it takes few hours for viruses to spread from a single door nobody to up to 60 of the surfaces in a building. Like this chair im sitting in. In light of what we now know about the transmittal of germs, the handshake seems ironically barbaric. What do we do . On the one hand it may well be time to bring back the bow and curtsy or hand kissing while wearing long gloves. There is winking, super hygienic potentially confusing say on job interview. Nice to meet you. The truth is, we all really just want to reach out and touch someone, problem solved. According to the american journal of infection control, transfer about 90 less bacteria than hand shakes. Instead of hi, jean, make it hygiene not to mention how cool youll feel doing it.
