It starts as bury they called me in that call to bob woodward who had been working at the Washington Post forenine months set in motion the incredible sequence of events in history. I think the editors said, with would be foolish enough to come in on saturday they knew i would come in. This looks like the very beginning. Woodwards notes of the arraignment of the morning they were arrested. The raw material of watergate now in the care of steve at the university of texas. You can see first note he took. One 1 weeks they pushed the story far beyond the five to one of president nixons closest confidantes. John m. Mitchell as u. S. On the form of new paperback calls it the most devastating political detective story. This is not who done it. We know who done it. This is a how done it. Its a reporters procedure. Thats right. It is about reporting. All about unglamorous how do you go about reporting a story. Went out at night and knocked on doors. That was hugh sloan, former fresherrer of the nixon campaign. You say in the book every time you visited sloan you felt like vultures, why . One his wife was pregnant and about to deliver a child. We were hanging outside, like buzzards. You could tell his conscience was troubled. And he would answer questions and never throw us out and his wife, debby said something that well never forget. This is an honest house. And as a reporter thats what youre looking for. Students come to the university of texas looking for the chance to lay hands on woodward and bernsteins notes of history. Their eyes light up. They have had some kind of moving experience being able to touch the same papers. Like woodwards notes from his clandestine meeting with the famous source. And cbs running those stories said to the country, said to those in the journalism profession this story is huge and we give credence to what the Washington Post is doing. But two weeks after biggest story came their biggest mistake. They incorrectly reported that hugh sloan told a grand jury white house chief of staff h. R. Alderman controlled the fund that paid for everything. Referring to the testimony before the grand jury. Correct. Our answer is no. We did not mr. Excellent did not implicate mr. Alderman. This must be the moment when you throw up . Worse. We brought how many sources did you have . We had two or three, of course isnt a source thats one of the lessons that we learned. It was painful. So painful that they ratted out an fbi agent they thought lied to them about alderman. It was the worst of journalism. We accused number one aide to the president of the United States and the we were wrong. We were desperate young men. Your source es. What is the ethics of that . Probably not terribly good. Then there is deep throat. Part of your ground rules with him not to even quote him but never to acknowledge his existence, you did that. In in all the president s men. We did. We felt we had to lay it allotter. Weve done some things wrong in this administration and the top man always takes responsibility. Deep throats role in watergate caused a sensation, everyone wanted to know who he was. No, i am not deep throat. In fact the number two man at the fbi was deep throat. In a position where he had to lie repeatedly in public. Thats right. Isnt that had to be aggressive with him. We had to tell the complete story. In the movie deep threat meets with woodward in the dead of night in underground garage. Cover up had little to do with watergate mainly to protect, the covert operations. Never has reporting looked so thrilling. Woodward calls it the golden age of journalism. Are we still int golden age . No. Not even close. The whole culture has changed. Not long ago he was headlining a father and sons act with his kids, 61yearold elliott on piano and 65 year old ian on xylophone. Hes 91 now and for more than 80 years hes been on one stage or another. On the big screen and most notably on the small screen in among other productions the 9s tv show picket fences. He won an emmy for portraying an he can senn particular lawyer. The high point of career that started when he was nine. Fyvush finkel made his name on 2nd avenue in new york where the great yiddish theaters stood. He started singing as a boy soprano. I got a dollar a night. I was the hero of the family making 8 a week. By the time he was a teenager he was first rate Second Avenue star, by his 40s he was one of the highest paid actors in yiddish theater. I sang and i danced. In fact i was a jitterbug. Sang in yiddish . Yes. You take a song and dance with a dolly with a hole in her stocking while her knees keep aknockin and her toes keep Fyvush Finkel sang and danced his way up and down Second Avenue but most of the houses that he brought down were torn down when yiddish theater largely died out. Finkel found himself in his 40s, the father of two and star without a stage. He had to find work where he could. I did bar mitzvahs. I entertained at wedding. I did all that, you know . He didnt do it for long, director Jerome Robbins called him to audition for fiddler on the roof. How did you did no. My friends, we are gathered here together to share in the joy of the newlyweds, motel and tzeitel. May they live together in peace, through a long, long age. Enough tears. He got the part. The onetime star of Second Avenue moved uptown and reinvented himself on broadway. It was a good run, until the parts dried up. I said, theres something wrong. Im going to school. My family laughed. Youre going to school, a man at 52. I said, yes, i want to know whats wrong. Thats the way were going to play it . He learned his lessons well. Learned how to perform for the camera and in his 50s reinvented himself again as a movie actor. I would like to state for the record that larry here, mr. Franconi refused to say under the 5th his role in the 1990 film q a as attorney Preston Perlstein that led to his role. Its who i am. That emmy award. Lotta people fight for this. They would sell their motherinlaw for an emmy. These days his costars are his sons. Each finkel has his time in the spotlight but when we sat down with them at his favorite haunt, Second Avenue deli, of course, the sons knew their roles and their fathers a. We try the two of us to do well and make the music. When hes introduced they are not an opening act its a family act. Wait, wait, wait. We are the jewish family. And they sold out when they played together, which is nice. Im 91 years old with this audience no big deal. But one columnist might have seen the real reward for Fyvush Finkel he wrote, here was a slightly hunched over 91yearold man with pants buttoned up to his chest who, as soon as the spotlight fell on to him, transformed in to a 30yearold. Mostly as an example for logan and her little sister delaney. I cant teach them every lesson. I dont have enough time. But i can be a good person and they can see that. Chris says one of the when pets of als that it puts your priorities in Crystal Clear focus. He says dads who think their careers matter in the slightest and as a vp of marketing he was one of them, are clueless. Were missing the greatest experience well ever have, ever. You always think that people who are dying want to get up early and watch the sunrise. I dont. I like to sleep. But if my kids get up early then he want to get up. I want that experience, you know. Thats also why hes making every effort to make new memories every day. I got the summer full. He arranged for logan to work decide topnotch chef. Hes got even bigger surprises ahead that he says will wow his girls. But as far as logan is concerned, thats really not necessary. He had her at hello. That dad who has als was the dad i was born with. And as for feeding her life lessons, he had her at the donuts. What do you think youll remember about him . He tried to make friends with the world. You have heard about hard choices the former first lady sat down with jane paully with some questions and answers. Beneath the tower of green hall, by the shores of make waban wellesley column alumni returned to their alma materment among them former first lady, u. S. Senator and secretary of state, Hillary Clinton class of 1969. I wonder if you recognize this girl . Oh, my, gosh. Yes. Yes, boy, i had long, long hair. What are you laughing at . Im laughing at my gestures. What about the pants . The pants . You know what, i have to tell you ive never been a fashion icon in case you havent noticed but this was a particularly bad choice. This commencement layout in life magazine was first appearance on the National Scene at age 21. The class of 69 has expressed a desire to one of their own speak for them and there was no debate so far as i could ascertain as to who their spokesman was to be. The challenge now is to practice politics is the art of making what appears to be impossible, possible. You tell a story about the night before the speech, an older woman who said she wouldnt trade places for the world with you, she was afraid, you say, fear is always with us, but we just dont have time for it. Not now. Right. Shes had time lately to think and to write about her four years as secretary of state in the obama administration. You have a good working relationship. Would friendship be appropriate . We became friends. You did clear your throat before you said that. When then president elect obama called me he pushed me hard to accept his offer of secretary ever state. He said, contrary to reports, i think we can become good friends. Theres a moment from your book where the if the takes you aside, i think you expecting some important consultation and do you know what im talking about . I do. Youve got something in your teeth. Now thats try friendship. There are husbands and wives would could not go there. As secretary of state you famously nearly traveled a million miles i heard a man say, what did she accomplish, and you say . I helped to restore americas leadership. How do you quantify that accomplishment . Abe number of ways. Clearly ending our role in the war in iraq. In afghanistan putting more troops in in order to try to beat back the taliban advance so that we can get to the point that we are today, they have peaceful election taking on the challenges that are posed by iran. Getting russia and china on board to pass tough sanctions in the u. N. Security council. Negotiating a cease fire in gaza to pry to prevent a war. And i think we laid the ground work for the world as it is and how america has to engage. And secrets talk to win the release of american held prisoner by the taliban. In every discussion about prisoners we demanded the release of Army Sergeant beau bergdahl. What do you think happened that night he wept off base . I have this idea. I hope at least clarified by the Army Investigation thats been promised. But i agree with all those who have said, starting with the president going to our military leadership that its just a core principle. You dont leave anybody behind. But as we know sergeant bergdahls recent release only inflamed the president s critics. I dont think any of us, even i who served four years in the administration, can from the outside make that judgment. This was, as i am told, a decision by the military, the intelligence community, the state department and the white house. And yet senator Lindsey Graham is talking about impeachment. Thats not the first time. I must say. These are imperfect decisions made by imperfect people based usually on imperfect information. Secretary gates and Vice President biden would not have gone after bin laden. Yes. There was a very legitimate difference of opinion. This was a hard choice, when it came time were in the situation room i happened to recommend that it go forward and that he make that decision. But i was fully aware that he could be riding his presidency on it. Your presidency was on the line, too. Lets assume. Only hypothetically. Lets assume hypothetically, your potential presidency would have been on the line, too. But at that point i was very much in the mindset im not going to run. Im ruling it out. That never crossed my mind. How is chelsea, having a good pregnancy . I could not be happier for her and her wonderful husband and for bill and me. Clearly being a grandmother is not all that is on her mind. Hillary clinton is weighing another run for president. I am not yet kind of making a list like i do, the pros and cons. Im just sort of living my life and seeing how it all feels to me. And asked every single day. Yes. Every day . Yes. President clinton told somebody in this room, personally, hilary says everyone is sick of the clintons, is that how you feel . Well, a lot of people have said that besides me. That wouldnt influence my decision. Because i think voters have the right to choose whoever they want. Is health an issue . No. For me, personally, no, thankfully. I fell on my head, i got a concussion, and worked through the lingering affects ever dizziness and double vision and thats all gone. And theres benghazi. I stood next to president obama as the marines carried the flagdraped cassette off the plane at andrews. There were a lot of confusing pieces of information flooding in to us. We did our best to sort it out. Did i my best to cooperate with the congress, i respect the Congress Oversight responsibility. But theres a difference between Unanswered Questions and unlistened to answers. The moss important questions for anybody thinking of running for president , are not will you run and can you win . There is what is your vision for america . Who is it go fog stay to restore our strength, our fairness, justice, what were going to do in this increasingly complex, interconnected world, you shouldnt run. Its not a contest who looks good and who can have the quick answer all the rest, who can get most outside money. We dont laugh time for that right now. Im smiling because i heard an echo of a 21yearold hilary diane rodham. We dont have time for that. I didnt deliberately print this list in big font so it would cover two pages. I did it so i would be able to see it. Even with my reading glasses. I understand completely. I was stunned. It takes two pages to cover the list of countries that have already had a woman leader. And some more than once. It includes bangladesh, indonesia, latvia, liberia, lithuania, united kingdom, of course. Back at the reunion, some of clintons wellesley friends have been waiting since graduation. My parents said to me, if there is ever a reunion going to be a woman president . I hope so. I didnt say hope so. Yes or no . Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Youre thinking maybe . Im thinking she has a lot to think about. If not you, who . Who is the viable woman of either party who could win a primary nomination in 2016 if not you . Well, i think there are a number of qualified women. Im not saying qualified. But politics is so unpredictable, whoever runs has to recognize that the american political system is probably the most difficult, even brutal, in the world. Here is why i think youre going to run. You quote a poem i do. In that teach. T. S. Elliott throws only the trying again and again and again to win again what weve lost before. That 21yearold girl you were will not take no for an answer, my prediction. Well see, jane. Theres a lot of food for thought in that. Was it a year, two years . Osgood ahead it was maybe two or three years. Osgood family secrets. And hey, theyre taking our stuff, no need to panic. And dan is one of more than 15 million unpaid caretakers for people with alzheimers. You remember what day i first met you . Dan plays memory games with her because doctors say its important to keep bs brain stimulated. Theres no cures for alzheimers. Medicine has helped at all . Because of the degenerative nature of the disease the Alzheimers Association says its important for families to discuss care plans sooner rather than later so loved ones arent left to make important decision on this their which is why i asked this question. What would you want for him ten years from now if you get to the point where you reel knee need care all the time . I want him to have good health. I would want for him to be able to not have to take care of me. And if i had to have somebody else take care of me, that would be hopefully fine, too. Her symptoms have progressed. But b. Has the same positive outlook thats made her famous. Even with alzheimers, i think that things are going to work out.
