This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley theres breaking news in the terror attack in london. We have just received word that a fourth innocent person was killed in that attack today. Just as the british were on guard for a possible attack in the sky, they were struck on the ground in the heart of london. A driver plowed a car into a group of pedestrians, then stabbed a police officer. At least four people, including the officer, were killed. 20 others were wounded. The attacker was shot to death by the police. Elizabeth palmer is in london. There has been a terror attack. Reporter in only seconds, a car speeding along the sidewalk left a trail of broken and bleeding bodies strewn across one of londons busiest bridges. Seconds later the car had crashed into the railings around parliament, setting off a panicked rush. In the chaos, shots rang out. [gunfire] it turned out the driver had shoved past security into parliaments grounds and started to stab a policeman until he was fatally shot by another officer. The attack began in early afternoon when parliament was in session, but astonished politicians were suddenly told it was in lockdown. I am going to suspend the sitting of the house. This house is suspended, but please wait here. Reporter british Prime Minister theresa may was whisked to safety while on the nearby bridge paramedics helped the injured and fought to save the dying. Suntita and bobby nagi, tourists from india, saw the whole attack unfold. He was speeding on the pavement and he was knocking off people walking by. Reporter one after the other . One after the other. Reporter suntita ran. Bobby started filming. One victim flung under a bus, another lying still in the middle of the road surrounded by shocked bystanders. I immediately told my wife that this is a terrorist attack. Reporter there was no question in your mind that he was going for as many people as he could get . Yeah, he was. He was just going on and on. He didnt stop. Reporter one british member of parliament on his way to work did his best to save the stabbed policeman, but a short time later he died. Police say a whole terrorist investigation is under way into the most serious attack in london since the deadly subway bombings of 2005. Prime minister theresa may did meet with Senior Intelligence chiefs this afternoon against the backdrop of so many smaller tragedies, individual tragedies, scott. Scotland yard hasnt released the name of the attacker, but just in the last couple minutes they have announced that they do believe they know who it was. Pelley and no official account of a motive. In 2016 alone, 11 people were injured at ohio state by man who drove into pedestrians and also attacked with a knife. 86 people were killed in nice, france, by a terrorist in a truck, and 12 were killed inner berlin when a truck barreled into a christmas market. We asked don dahler to look into security here at home. Reporter more than 300,000 pass through New York Times square on any given day, a tempting target where seven years ago a terrorist failed to detonate a car bomb that could have killed scores. To protect against vehicleborne attacks, the city installed heavy concrete barriers around areas where there are large crowds. A new policy allows nypd officers to fire on a charging vehicle without hesitation. The u. S. State department uses antiram barriers like those seen here around its embassy. They can stop a truck going 50mph. As you can see, there are a myriad of people walking by. Reporter but former nypd officer and f. B. I. Agent manuel gomez says cities with large pedestrian populations will always be vulnerable. No city can potentially fortify every street corner. It would be a war zone. Reporter last year a radicalized Ohio State University student drove his car into a group of other students before attacking them with a knife. Terror attacks involving vehicles ramming pedestrians in berlin and nice killed 98 and injured hundreds. And Israel Attack and in israel, attacks in cars are almost a regular occurrence. As this happen, different types of attacks evolve. So we have enforcements like we have now. We have at parades, lots of concrete, streets closed off, so we evolve as the threat evolves. Reporter Security Experts say intelligence operations have prevented many terror attacks, but because vehicles are easy weapon, the best safeguard against this type of terrorism is another person reporting suspicious activity. In response to londons attack today, the nypd dispatched heavy weapons units to sensitive sites, diplomatic sites as well as popular places. Scott, the nypd says they know of no credible threat to the city. Pelley don dahler here in manhattan. Don, thank you. Well, the republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee said again today there is no evidence to support President Trumps claim that his phones were tapped during the campaign on the orders of president obama. But congressman devin nunes did reveal today that after the election mr. Trump and some of his aides were intercepted speaking to foreign officials. Nunes said the intelligence intercepts were routine and lawful, but the Committee Chairman took the unusual step of briefing mr. Trump. Margaret brennan picks up the story. I recently confirmed that on numerous occasions the Intelligence Community incidentally collected information about u. S. Citizens involved in the trump transition. Reporter House Intelligence Committee chairman devin nunes said he had seen about a dozen intercepted communications involving members of the trump transition team. That may mean either Trump Associates or trump himself were in contact with foreigners under surveillance or the foreigners were discussing the trump team. I believe it was all done legally. Reporter Nunes Committee is investigating russian interference in the election, but the chairman said the reports did not involve russia. After briefing the president , nunes said he was concerned that President Trumps name and those of his team were not properly redacted from the report, thus unmasking their identity. So your issue is the unmasking, not that there was this monitoring . Theres additional unmasking of name, which i think is totally inappropriate. Reporter a short time later President Trump was asked if the new information vindicated his claims that president Obama Wiretapped his phones . I somewhat do, i must tell you. I very much appreciated the fact that they found what they found, but i somewhat do. Reporter but nunes himself said the president was wrong. That did not happen. Reporter nunes took the unusual step of briefing the press and then the president , before telling adam schiff, the top democrat on the Intelligence Committee. The chairman will need to decide whether he is the chairman of an independent investigation into conduct, which includes allegations of potential coordination between the Trump Campaign and the russians, or hes going to act as a surrogate of the white house, because he cannot do both. Reporter now nunes himself was a member of the trump transition team. Scott, today even some republicans are calling for a special Congressional Committee to lead the investigation. Hes the former number two at the Central Intelligence agency, and he was, for the record, a supporter of Hillary ClintonsWhite House Run last year. Michael, let me ask you, does this mean that the president was the target of this surveillance . Scott, this is what we in the Intelligence Community call incidental collection, and that means that the target was a legitimate Foreign National intelligence target and not an american. So, no, donald trump was not the target of this collection. Pelley just because u. S. Intelligence is listening in on the conversations of one of these foreign officials doesnt necessarily mean that official is up to something nefarious . Correct, scott. There are thousands of conversations every day between u. S. Officials and foreign officials, and some of those conversations are picked up. The incidental collection that occurs is numerous and it happens every day. Pelley congressman nunes says there was really no valuable intelligence in any of this. Scott, that may be chairman nunes view, but i can tell you that these reports would not have been disseminated by n. S. A. Had n. S. A. Not believed that there was intelligence value there. Pelley now, congressman nunes discovered these reports, took them to the white house urge or i should say took the information to the white house, and briefed the president on that. Is that unusual . Yes, scott, it is. It sounds to me as if he did not get these reports directly from mike rockingers at rogers at n. S. A. And somebody else brought them to him. It would have been much more appropriate to have gone back the director rogers to ask about the reports, to get a full readout, a full review of the report, and then it would have been appropriate to have discussed that with his committee and not run to the white house immediately. The president has said many times that he has nothing to do with russia, but its getting harder for his former Campaign Chairman to make the same claim. Heres jeff pegues. Paul was hired, as i said, to count delegates. Thats why he was brought in. Reporter but new reports have surfaced about manaforts business relationships with associates of russian president vladimir putin. According to the documents obtained by the associated press, in 2006, manafort was paid 10 million by russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska to, as manafort described it, to greatly benefit the putin government by lobbying for News Coverage in the united states, europe and the former soviet republics. State Department Cables released by wikileaks describe deripaska as being a permanent fixture on putins trips abroad and among the two or three oligarchs putin turns to on a regular basis inch a statement manafort acknowledged working for deripaska but denied any connection to the russian government, saying, once again, smear and innuendo are being used to paint a false picture.
