Wilkins survived, her baby girl did not. Today closing arguments in the case. Reporter court is back in reposes and were hoping to hear about a verdict soon. Now lane is facing six felony counts including first degree murder and unlawful termination of a pregnancy. Its been a troubling couple of weeks as evidence has come to light in this case. During closing arguments the prosecution tried to hammer home dynel lanes intent to kill Michelle Wilkins and cut a baby out of her womb. Intent is needed and without it the jury could convict lane of manslaughter instead. Attorneys explained to the jury that lane had been trying for months to prove to her family that she was pregnant and became desperate to do. So they recalled photos of lane hosting a baby shower despite not actually being pregnant and reminding the jury lane had printed out an ultrasound she found online and passed it off on her own. They walked the jury through the attack recalling the precision with which she cut lanes attorney said lane did not plan or prepare this attack. If her intent was that im going to kill this woman to cut her baby out, why wouldnt she have one weapon on her . Any way . Why would she do this in her daughters bedroom using accessible things . Why . Because it was a hasty, impulsive and wreckless act. There never was any intention. Reporter so Michelle Wilkins was also in court today for closing arguments. Were now just waiting for that verdict. Apparently this jury has had a few questions about what was presented throughout the past couple of days in this trial. Its worth noting as you did already that charges are only related to the attack on Michelle Wilkins, no charges related to the death of the baby. Reporter thats right. Considered a person under colorado law, so its only against michelle. Thank you so much, ryan haarer reporting from boulder county. The surgical tech accused of stealing fentanyl from Swedish Medical Center prompting a hepatitis and hiv scare here in colorado has prompted alerts in two other states. Today a hospital in california became the third to send out an alert to patients. A four month long 9wants to know investigation has found that some colorado schools are not fully prepared if a shooter wanted to harm their students or your kids. We learned some schools do not teach students how to react, where to hide or what to do. Theyve not conducted any drills and only started doing some of them this year. Our crime and justice reporter Anastasiya Bolton sent all 178 School Districts in colorado open record requests asking what they are doing when it comes to preparing for an open shooter. I have to say with all thats gone on many parents are probably more than just a little surprised by this. Honestly weve gotten so much feedback, probably more on this particular story than on any other story on 9news i have so when you talk about the fact we asked all 178 districts questions in a letter, we called them and emailed them to follow up and clarify their appearances. We wanted to make sure every school had an opportunity to respond. Some School Districts refused to tell us anything, even declining yes or no answers. Why . Because these Public Institutions paid for by your dollars told us they didnt have to answer our questions. With the help of those who did cooperate we now have a better picture of how prepared colorado schools are for an active shooter. We visited schools across the state and we found theyre training differently in terms of how long they practice, how often and what the drills look like. Jefferson county, for instance, does two lockdown drills for all student every year. The county also does many other drills during the year and has dedicated security personnel. Some smaller School Districts treat the threat very differently. Some admit they have never done a drill of this kind. People like david benke, a teacher who saved students in a colorado shooting, say this training is critical. Love toker that about your backup love to hear about your backup plan, what if it really does happen and youre not trained for it . Because you dont train for your best day. You train for your worst day, all right . And then the second thing is arent we supposed to be preparing the kids for life . Dont these things happen other places other than schools now . The findings of the Colorado Department of education where they oversee everything from food to testing, but other than asking the district to check a box on a questionnaire, no one is actually checking if the schools are doing even the small things theyre required to by law. Tonight on 9news at 9 00 and 10 00 we find out why some schools arent training and see we also worked with experts to make sure that we tell and show you and not compromise things to the techniques that would put students and teachers in danger. So we are only showing what we are supposed to, not to give any tips to any folks. Right. Thats a good path. I know watching your story as i have, a lot of little kids watching this happen with very young people in the room. I mean just watching their faces you can tell theyre very concerned about it, but theyre also soaking it up i think and helping to devise a plan of action. Reporter action. We went to two trainings, an Elementary School and high school in jefferson county. For a high school they have been in this, they have been in the district for a while. This is second nature. They hear lock, lights, out of sight and drop their things and hide. Theres not even a conversation day investigation. The little ones, i got to tell you, they are precious. Theyre cute, right . They go hide and the teacher talks to them and kind of walks through what if a bad guy walks in . What do we have to do . We have to be super, super quiet and super, super still. Thats difficult for someone who is little for 40 minutes. No question. But they still do it. The importantening is were hearing from experiments important thing is were hearing from experts is we have to practice. We look forward to your stories at 9 00 and 10 00. Current temperatures in Northern Colorado 39, 50s towards the Eastern Plains and the high country, 30s and 20s and the western slope 44 degrees. Now that snow currently is sitting in areas in the foothills and also in the high country. The storm system right now is cutting across colorado, not very organized, but around 6 00 theres a chance that we could already start to see some showers around the metro area and that rain transitioning into snow into the overnight hours and by tomorrow morning. A storm really is not all that impressive for the front range, but in the high country is where we could see some really good snowfall amounts. That snow started to fall early in the morning up in steamboat, just beautiful off of our facebook page. Larry, thanks. Here is a wider view of whats happening across colorado. The storm is ripping around this snowfall in the western slope, the snow falling in areas of the san juans already along the front range mountains. Down south were seeing moisture south of castle rock near Monument Hill and palmer divide. The rain snow line is really close at fort collins. We saw the Horsetooth Reservoir picture with the snow falling already and the snow is expected to increase overnight into tomorrow. We have all these travel advisories in effect until tomorrow afternoon. Accumulations in our Central Mountains from 8 to 12 inches. In our southern foothills 6 to 10 inches. You think she eats super 106 i hope i can just walk to the refrigerator when im 106. Thats great. How old she is. Thats awesome. Well, i dont know how much dancing you got going on. Reporter does she dance with mckinley or hoover . No. Good for her. I wonder if she was ever in an expensive marriage. Thats what were talking about. Let me it be you something. Marriage is not me tell you something. Investment. It costs 381,000 to have a what . Thats what it says. 2,000 a year for date night. What a bad investment. Surprises, gifts. Its almost 8,000 a year and if youre married 45 years, its about 381,000. Id buy action figures. There you go. Talk about taking a bath in an investment. Thats why you dont get the that . Thank you. An excel spreadsheet of where were headed. This. Its just not worth it. Was it, guys . All the happiness and joy you get in return . There is that. Mark koebrich is so happy he cant stand it. Thats true. Its just they should never figure this stuff out. Once they know, you know how you get that figure to raise a kid to be 18, dont. Dont give us that number. You battle the money and live in some mega house and a sports car and youd be so lonely. Youd be sitting there. What do you mean lonely . Im not lonely. I am not. I just sit there and light money on fire because i can and you cant. Oh, my goodness, you are just bad. I know. This has been enlightening. Lets talk about steves its costly. I bet it is. Dont tell me you just take them to happy hour. Order. All right. Talk to you later. They have too much fun. Hey, you will never look at your lunch the same way again. Im not kidding. No. Steve spangler is back with Steve Spangler is in here somewhere, somewhere. These are giant balloons. What are we doing . Remember that weather and science day we had 10,000 of these. Yes. I got to show you a secret. Viewers at home will say i wish you wouldnt have taught me that because now theres never a time i can finish a sandwich without doing this trick. The question is how many breaths does it take to blow up a balloon . Got it . Would be a bad science experiment because youd do one big breath and the next would be smaller because youre worried about it popping. I have this plastic material that doesnt stretch, so this is perfect and this is like a diaper genie refill. Yes. Heres what i want you to do. Put your hand on the bag just like this and then your mouth on the bag. Its brandnew. Youre just going to breathe into the bag. How many breaths would it take 1,000. Keep going. Its a long segment. Pace yourself, all right . Give me one big breath and ill call that one three. Lets say that was three. If i did a little estimation there is your three breaths of air. So for this whole bag about 5 feet long, this is three, six, nine, 12, i think it would take you about 15 breaths of air. If i said i could do it in fewer breaths, youd say probably, but if i said i could do it in one single breath, the whole bag, impossible . Yes. Lets see our diaper genie refill. How about if i give you that much there and say i can do it in a single breath. Impossible . Yes. Here is the secret. So its one continuous tube. Heres what were going to do. Ill ask jerry to hang onto this end for me. Now watch what happens. I am going to put my fingers in the bag like this. If i show the camera, see im putting my fingers in the bag like this. Ill hold it like this and blow from far away. If i blow from far away the air from around here will actually go into the bag. Watch this. Look at that. You did it. A single breath of air. Didnt that crazy . Its all about flight as well. The area of low pressure. The hardest thing is to teach your brain to not get close to the bag. If you get close to the bag, you cant let the air from the sides in. Imagine on here. Fingers in the bag and ill hold it like this. Dont get any closer than that. Feels weird, doesnt it . It does. Long steady breath into the bag. Thats it. Would you look at that. There is your single breath of air. Isnt that crazy . The next time you eat a sandwich, youll put your fingers in the bag, one single breath. Cha would happen if on weather and science day we what would happen if on weather and science day we had 1,000 kids doing this principle . It would be awesome. Spangler science online. Whats the website . All right, good. Love it. Id say we blame Steve Spangler. Hes a chatty guy. It certainly wasnt my fault were out of time. And slacker and steve. It could be us. I dont know.
