The 24 hour snow reports are really nice for Copper Mountain 7 inches, loveland 8, cooper 5, steamboat 4 and at abasin 9 inches. All the area shaded in lilac, lightweight vehicles, high profile vehicles, youre encouraged to not travel there, gusts up to 75 Miles Per Hour. Another beautiful view of the city. They disagree, many of the conservative candidates disagree with donald trump who has expressed some positive aspects towards planned parenthood. Reporter colorado elementary schoolteacher Daniel Garcia lied about qualifications to at least five School Districts. After several forced resignations he moved to seattle and lied his way into schools again. Was it a mistake to put this guy in the classroom . He wasnt necessarily a danger to children. Im not saying im perfect. I made my mistakes obviously. Reporter florida was revoking lenny wolfs teaching license for forgery. She got certified in colorado. Texas revoked this mans teaching license after he was alleged to have tried to contact a boy on the predator. Kendall said he never hurt kid. They pulled my license when they really didnt have grounds to and i let it happen because i didnt have the money to fight it. Episode this guy got a substitute job in the state of indiana. He was supposed to be flagged in a National Database of problem teachers, but theres confusion as to why the system failed. The nonprofit maintains the database for states. We found it can take months and even some names are forgotten to be added allowing teachers to cross state lines back into school. Theres no federal law requiring reporting. We want to make sure that the federal government is doing everything they can to insure that our children are protected while theyre in these schools. Reporter we found 9,000 disciplined teachers missing from the database. Its not a perfect system. Reporter the data business director believes it usually works. Why arent all states on this same page to mick this whole system more efficient and make this whole system more efficient and more reliable . Because each state is different. Thats tonight. Jeremy, i think all of us expect that the people we turn our children over to every day in the School Environment have been vetted and are cleared and are people that you can trust your children to be with. I think people expect with the technology to vet those people to be up to date for 2016, perhaps some change is on mark. We look forward to your next story. Thanks, jeremy. They are saying you might want to get with it because the kind of fraud the irs is already seeing is amounting to what you might call a full court press for people who need to file and what you need to do were looking at this for two reasons. First of all, were checking out the light traffic at i70 and genesee, not too bad right there. However. However, as youre saying, if your stomach is queasy, its because youre looking at this picture right now saying thats the wind that has me going up and down on the ride i never chose to get on and were all on this ride right now. Just howling just all day long. Its been like this since yesterday. Oh, my goodness. Its some serious gusts that pick up dirt and everything, garbage cans and everything else. Im telling you, its dangerous and its just really, really annoying. I saw a construction site, they lost all their plastic into their trees across the street and they were trying to get their plastic out of the trees which was impossible in the wind. Its a mess. You feel for them and the construction signs and things that can go flying and everything else. Hopefully it settles down. Its an el nino thing, isnt it, the winds . Yup. Drives on i70 heading through Glenwood Canyon near hanging lake may have some intermittent stops. Several boulders fell overnight. We talked about it before and its happening again, just a few weeks into tax season and the irs is already alerting taxpayers that there could be something really wrong with their returns. Taxpayers across the country are getting letters from the irs saying the agency is again dealing with an onslaught of fraudulent tax returns. Last year millions of Social Security numbers ended up in the hands of identity thieves. 9wants to know reporter Chris Vanderveen covered this then he found out after audit after audit showing the irs figures its losing about 5 billion a year to people who file tax returns on someone elses behalf. In most cases were hearing that theyre efiling and just doing this in bullet massive amounts of returns and they know bulk massive amounts of returns and they know a lot of these will be caught by the irs. Some good news, the irs says more security measures are in place this year to detect a real return from a fraud one, but the best thing to do is get your taxes done as soon as possible. Get all of your w2s and 1099s right away and file as soon as possible. If you do something to file and if says that someone has already used your Social Security number, put a freeze on all your credit accounts and check your credit reports to insure no new fraudulent accounts have been opened in your name. If you file your taxes through the mail, make sure you include an Identity Theft form. It says if youre a potential irs can mark your account to identify questionable activity. That form is available on the irs website. Just another reason to get it done early. Yes. Yes, we are. Oh, my gosh, if youre heading to the mountains, there should be some fresh powder. Belen is back next with our extended forecast. Watch this. A cliff collapse in new zealand was caught on video yesterday. It happened just after a 5. 7 magnitude earthquake there. The epicenter of the quake on new zealands south island was and an earthquake there almost exactly five years ago killed more than 180 people. New zealands seismic body said the quake yesterday. Horsetooth mountain. Its a little quieter there. Yeah, but theres no flag in front of us. We have no way to know. No birds trying to fly in the wind. Im telling you its crazy. Even the birds were giving it up today, trust me, belen. My hair was flying all over the place this afternoon. I was joking i felt like i was in a music video. The wind machine. The beyonce fan. Yeah. But now the hair is at half well, we are seeing some improvement as far as the winds go. Im going to stop talking about my hair, but first lets look at those temperatures because around this time of year we should be at 46 degrees that. Sun has peeked up from behind the clouds. Were finally starting to see some clearing, just a beautiful afternoon even though we do have those winds, but the high today was able to manage to the upper 50s in the metro area. Also in fort collins and greeley 60s. These are the highs today and in the high country we managed 40s and 30s. Right now were at 57 degrees at dia, but check out those wind, 26 Miles Per Hour. Out here in the backyard our temperatures are at 55 degrees and just from this afternoon our 11 00 to noon show i was out here, big improvement as far as the winds go. The temperatures right now across the state are in the 50s for fort collins, greeley and denver, so slightly cooler than out east temperatures in the 50s and 60s and in the high country 30s and 40s. So still pretty mild afternoon. Now for the rest of the evening our skies are going to start to clear and our temperatures will be in the 40s. If you are out and about around 10 00 in the overnight hours, our temperatures will drop into the 30s, but i think the main story for us here on the front range at least will continue to be these strong winds. Weve got gusts right now in broomfield in the 60s, aurora reports. So far weve had reports at dia up to 45 Miles Per Hour, nederland 67, El Dorado Springs 70 Miles Per Hour. We still have that high wind midnight. So this area could still see gusts up to 75 Miles Per Hour. As i take you through this Wind Gust Forecast, youll notice the strongest winds will happen before midnight and after that theyll be strong but not in that high wind criteria. Lets take you through this Wind Gust Forecast through the rest of the afternoon. Speeds closer to the foothills up to 50 Miles Per Hour through tomorrow morning. Here in the city winds coming in from the south possibly from 5 to 10 Miles Per Hour, but still a possibility of gusts in the foothills up to 40 Miles Per Hour. So an improvement in comparison to what were seeing now in the foothills for tomorrow morning and even into tomorrow afternoon. Now as far as any rain or snow goes, thats also on the decrease in the high country. What weve got going right now is just some wind blown snow along the front range mountains. In northeast colorado we have some light rain thats falling it. Thats about all the snow were seeing now falling on doppler, but we so desperately needed that snowfall in our north and Central Mountains because our snowpack just from a week to two weeks ago has dropped about 6 statewide. So a lot of that affected in well. Although if you do like that warmer weather and sunshine, thats dandy, but we need to through colorado to help with our snowpack situation. Satellite and radar taking us through the rest of the evening, notice a possibility for showers in northeast colorado, light snow lingering in our north and central innocents, but by tomorrow morning that snow mountains, but by tomorrow morning that snow wraps up. Tonight skies partly cloudy, winds 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour, lows in the 30s in fort collins, denver, greeley, 29 and teens for some of our mountain supremes. An improvement because this spot usually sees temperatures be valleys. An improvement because this spot usually sees temperatures below 10. 40s in the high country, 50s and 60s in the lower elevations and the Eastern Plains as well. What we have going on right now is this northwest flow bringing these strong winds along with the jet stream and also that moisture, that snow. Whats going to happen through the rest of the week . This High Pressure ridge that will bring us warmer temperatures and also some very dry weather. By the end of the week thursday and friday we get our next chance for snow, but that will be only for the high country. The weather on the front range is going to stay dry. Were also going to see those temperatures become so warm that theyll be close to record highs, tomorrow the high 64, on wednesday 69 when the record high is 72 and on thursday im forecasting a high of 71 and the record high is 72. So lets look at the extended forecast and youll notice the weather stays pretty dry for us. Wednesday 69, thursday 72, friday 65, so very dry and breezy and saturday 64 degrees for the high. If i missed something, you can always go to 9news. Com to get the full forecast, but, kim and mark, as we settle into this dry weather, we have to start also being very cautious because this pattern is also conducive to the threat for wildfires. We need to be careful with that extended forecast is looking really, really dry for us . And the wind. Thats another factor. Its a serious risk. Weve seen them all time of the year in colorado. Thank you. For nearly a dozen years a spacecraft called cassini has been orbiting saturn and its moons taking amazing pictures from a world 1 billion miles away from our earth. The teen in charge of taking those pictures for us earthlings is in boulder and Maya Rodriguez got inside their lab today to see how this is all done, pretty cool. It is so amazing the work theyre doing there. It is called the cyclops lab and this Team Literally gets pictures of saturn ready for the public to view. Back in 1997 nasa launched a spacecraft called cassini which also had a lander from the European Space agency attached to it. The lander went to the surface of one of saturns moons called titan while cassini continued orbiting the planet taking pictures. The cyclops in boulder is in charge of taking the raw pictures and cleaning them up filtering out things like haze and space dust. So far theyve handled hundreds of thousands of images from cassini. Its amazing learning. I mean these guys amaze me every day with their knowledge and its great to see the process. I mean it really is like a once in a lifetime opportunity to work for a space mission. Every morning i show up and look at images that im the first person to see them, theyre from 1 billion miles away. Its interesting. Its really cool to see that. It is pretty cool. Sadly cassini is reaching the end of its life entering whats known as the grand finale. It will deorbit eventually crashing into saturn by next year, but before it does it has a few more tricks up its sleeve thing it will do in its final days coming up tonight at 6 00, one more thing it needs to do and its something thats not been done before. Thats intriguing. The website is incredible. Its just art. Its incredible art. It really is and the way they clean up these pictures. When you see the raw pictures, theres a lot of haze and sort of space dust in there. You cant really see it, but once they clean it up, boy, those images are something else. Its eye popping. Thats so cool. I wake up every day and look at pictures a billion miles away. What a job. For humans to be seeing unbelievable. Thats a great gig if you can get it, a lot of work in why. Worth it. Tonight. Coming up who the experts are predicting to be the big winners. Yeah. Big winners coming and a huge stories about your life today, a piece of lafayettes history is getting a facelift this month and its so big that citys fire station. Thats big. The cocacola mural was found when a building on lafayettes public road was in the process of being demolished. Workers discovered it when they removed some asbestos siding back in june. Because it was protected by the siding the mural is actually in pretty good shape especially given its age. The towns Preservation Board said it could have been painted near the end of the 1940s. The town is now taking steps to make sure it is preserved for the future. We had had an inkling something was there, but we didnt know for sure. So it was a really exciting discovery. A majority of people in the Community Came together and were really excited about saving it and learning about the history. How about that. Saw those all over when i was a kid. That was a long time ago. The Restoration Team will spend all of february working on the mural making sure that each piece of flaking paint is put back in place. The town is currently working on finding a new home on public road for the artwork. That is remarkable, a beautiful piece. Night, 58th Grammy Awards. Kendrick lamar, taylor swift and the weekend are expected to capture more than a few emmys. Taylor swift and the weekend have seven nominations each. The Hunting Group spent a lot of time in Garfield County and most of them were on horseback. The photos of him are riding with packs of dogs and other dignitaries. President roosevelt gave a speech at the Little Blue School house in raven, colorado. More than 1,400 people showed up for that speech. We are watching that drive because a lot of people decided well, maybe ill go do a little skiing and now theyre coming home with all their friends. Thats right. Next a look at backups and another check on the forecast. Well, its still pretty slow, but its not a dead stop. You know what . This is actually not terrible. It was a lot slower earlier, but these are all those lucky holiday revelers who got up to ski today winding their way home. Yeah. Its not too bad. Probably some people game back early, do you think . Or others are saying well stay up here and have dinner. Thats the way to do it. It looks a lot snowier up there than i would have guessed. Its pretty nice down here. Has it been overcast up there . Weve had some breaks in cloud but the snow is lingering and the travel advisory is in effect until midnight. The other thing is the winds. Weve got a really pretty shot now of our camera overlooking the front range mountains. This camera is shaking around a little bit. We still have gusts in some spots up to 50 Miles Per Hour. Winds in Northern Colorado and fort collins up to about 50 Miles Per Hour. So again that high wind warning still in effect until midnight. Then that extended forecast will show more dry, warm and windy at times weather. So well look at wednesday and thursday as being our warmer dales when we could get really days when we could get really close to the record highs. Currently wednesday our record high is 71 and thursday 72. So well get really close to it. Kathy will be in at 5 00 and give you an update. Wow, that sounds great. I saw a gal today with an armful of books trying to open her car door in the wind and trying to hold onto the books wind would not let her do it. And you helped her, of course, the gentleman that you are. Now i feel badly because i was going by, but she went around to the other side of the car. She handled it. You got to come up with a plan these days. We like the forecast, so looks good. Everybody stay safe as we talked about the fire danger. That does it for us. 9news at 5 00 is coming up next.
