This robber is quite brazen as he knocks over an employee before trying to commit robbery. The suspect pursued on smashing display cases. But he wasnt able to stop him. He was wearing a surgical mask and unable to break the glass display cases because they are made of a special bullet proof material. The gunman left after about two minutes. People in the area say they are surprised. I mean its shocking. I didnt know about it. I imagine it happened, but its terrifying, especially in the middle of the day, you wouldnt expect it. Reporter the suspect was seen outside the Jewelry Store for ten minutes before rushing in. He was using fear to commit a robbery. Even though he didnt get away with anything, it is still an attempted robbery. San francisco is still a big city. Im sad, but not shocked by it. Reporter and here is another look at the suspect. He is described as being 20 to 25 years old. Now police are asking for the public for help in identifying the suspect. They say with the excellent quality of the images, they are confident he will be caught. Heather, frank . Yeah, lets hope someone recognizes him and gives police a call. New at 10 00 tonight, more surveillance images. Police in santa cruz are hoping these pictures will help them catch a bank robber. A man dressed in black stormed into the bank around 1 00 this afternoon. Police say he jumped over a counter, pointed a gun at Bank Employees and demand cash. The tellers complied. Witnesses say he appeared to be in his 20s about fivefeet nine with a medium build. Two deputies have been arrested and are facing charges in two unrelated cases. Deputy grova was arrested for allegedly assaulting an inmate and sergeant little was arrested on suspicion of making a secret recording of other Law Enforcement personnel. He recorded his soup visors trying to get them to Say Something he could use as leverage in the future. Both men are currently free on bail. An arrest of one of our own is never a proud moment, but he says it is necessary to maintain the communitys trust and the integrity of the department. Well families living on the backside of mt. Diablo are being told it will take months to fix a road badly damaged bay mud slide. Morgan territory road has been shut down now in both directions since last week. The road runs down the eastern side of mt. Diablo. The road closure has isolated the entire Community Taking out power and water lines along with the road. But there are some signs of recovery. On saturday they make way for the farmers market. Tomorrow something more. Its a handful of, you know, Tea Party Types that are waving their flags, whatever. Reporter groups arent sure what to expect from the march for trump support and a new administration. But the local gatherings built as the freedom march has a few hundred people expressing it on facebook. We are coming out, hoping we could come out in big numbers to make clear that if youre a white supremacist youre not welcomed here in berkeley. Reporter the Police Department has been making plans to keep the two factions apart and the afternoon peaceful. Neither group has applied for a permit, so planning is big. Well see who comes. Well be ready and well prepare for a number of different contingencies. The counter protesters plan to get here earlier at not earlier at noon, heather to try to head them off. You mentioned one cafe owner planning to close early. That one is just an abundance of caution because they are enclosed by glass and they are pretty close by. The fbi arrested a suspect today on a string of bomb threats against the Jewish Community centers around the country. Jana katsuyama joins us live with what she has learned from officials here and more from the criminal complaint. Jana . Reporter heather and frank, the fbi arrested the suspect Juan Thompson in st. Louis. The criminal complaint seems to point to a personal vendetta more than an ideology. Nationwide theres been more than 100 threats to the Jewish Community centers this year, but thompson is linked to only nine of those cases. The fbi raided a house in st. Louis, missouri connected with 31yearold Juan Thompson. Thompson was arrested and accused of making bomb threats by phone to eight Jewish Community centers and the Anti Defamation League in new york city. For how long . Its crazy. Reporter some say whats crazy is a possible motive suggested in the fbis criminal complaint. It charges thompson with cyber stalking and says he had been harassing his exgirlfriend from july through november threatening to release nude photos, telling her employer she had a dui, stds, and was antisemitic. Thompson began calling in bombthreats in january using his exgirlfriends name and his own name. On social media thompson appeared to have posted messages suggesting his ex girlfriend was framing him. Thompson was fired from the online publication intercept last year after fabricating this story about the charleston, South Carolina Church Shooter dylann roof. Our center on extremism had known of this individual and tracking him because of other things he had done and said. Hes made bizarre claims against President Trump, against President Trump. Reporter seth griff says the building was targeted february 27 and says whats so unsettling, thompson is just accused in a small fraction of the threats. More than 100 so far in five waves of the phone calls nationwide since january 1. According to the adl, which is mapping the incidents. And the most recent, a third incident of Jewish Cemetery vandalism was discovered thursday in rochester, new york. But they are still concerned that the perpetrators of other threats are still at large. Just because theres been an arrest today around our bomb threat does not mean the threats have disappeared or will stop. Reporter fbi director james comey met with jewish leaders today. Also today the Commission Center says they will grant emergency waivers. That means they will be allowed to track the phone number of anyone who calls in a threat to a Jewish Community center even if that number comes up blocked. Oh wow. Lets talk about thompson. I know he was in federal court today, but what did he learn from his appearance today . He was in federal court with some supporters there. He was never convicted of any crime, he also told the judge he has enough money to hire his own attorney. Now he is only suspected of a handful of these threats and you mentioned there are a hundred altogether . Any leads that youre aware of as to the other 90 or so that have not been solved . I asked seth brisk about what he knows and he says it is spread all over the country where they are looking into this and they do have a data base of the extremists theyve been tracking as this person is in that and others in the data base. Okay, thank you. Well all southbound lanes of highway 101 in palo alto are now back open tonight following an accident that caused nearly a full day of traffic backups. The trouble began shortly after 11 00 last night. Chp says a dump truck driver forgot to lower the bucket and smashed right into the embarcadero road overpass forcing the closure of two southbound lanes on the freeway and one lane of the overpass. Crews worked all day to repair the damage. The fear was loose pieces of concrete could come loose and strike a vehicle on the freeway below. You could dent a car or let it penetrate through the window and strike the people in the car. Reporter chp says the dump truck driver was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. No one else was hurt. Lanes reopened at 5 30, but more repair work is going to be needed. Police in fremont arrested two people in a mail theft case. They found hundreds of envelopes stuffed in two pillow cases in the trunk of a stolen car. 95 of the mail was stolen in fremont. Mostly from mailboxes and apartments and condominium complexes. The two people arrested are a man and a woman. Authorities described them as transient. Both are now at santa rita jail and facing charges including Identity Theft and possession of a stolen vehicle. Well there were some frightening moments in the san jose moment today when a gas line ruptured prompting evacuations. And the repairs were being made and there were some nervous moments for residents and ten nearby homes who were told to shelter in place. I think about san bruno. The oroville dam where crews restarted a part of the power plant thats been closed since the spillway was damaged last month. Crews had to remove thousands of cubic yards of rocks and debris from below the spillway before they could start. One of the turbines at the hyatt power plant. Getting the power plant back online allows for the release of some water from behind the dam without sending it over the spillway. And we are tracking the bay area weekend forecast. Here is the system we are tracking dropping a little rain north of here and we would have a winter storm warning that will go into Effect Tomorrow afternoon for the lake tahoe area. Reporter thousands came to honor Deputy Michael foley a proud irishman who put his family first. Reporter the 60yearold foley died last week after accidentally run over by a bus at santa rita jail in dublin. The driver of the bus a fellow deputy was among those who paid the respects at the concord pavilion. Fully served 29 years with the concord Police Department before joining the Services Office in 2017. He may have been older than most with the sheriffs office, but worked the hardest and served as a mentor to deputies half his age. Mike rose through every hawaii reporter deputy foley was earning money to pay for his 18 yearold sons college education, his son also named michael spoke to the mourners. My dad was my absolute best friend. No one knew my dad better handy and no one knew me better dad better than i did and no one knew me better than he did. The suspect was in a stolen car and had allegedly shot and killed another man in los angeles earlier that same day. Oakland city officials will get them for free, but that might be changing. How the distributes are received, distributed, and reported are under review by portlands Ethics Commission meeting. The process needs to be transparent. I would say the system today is not perfect. That the oversight is really nonexistent. Reporter elected officials can use free tickets not considered gifts as long as they follow city policies and report it properly. But this draft report by the Ethics Commission found among other things Ticket Distribution from 2015 was poorly managed. There are ethical concerns. According to this graph there are problems with officials failing to report how the tickets were used. Lets just not have the tickets given to us in the first place. Then we dont need to worry if people are giving them out the right way and we can put that money back to serve the public needs. Reporter Council Member at large is proposing oakland to eliminate their policies by selling the tickets instead, using the money to possibly help the homeless. We could bring in about 400,000 per year. Money we could spend to serve the pub lynch reporter but if they do keep getting free tickets, then the draft report recommends the staff person be named a ticket administrator to receive control and track them. They want to go a step forward in suggesting placing restrictions on the contributions to make sure donors dont get a lot of tickets. I want to respect the Ethics Commission and their research and recommendations, what they are promoting and what they are recommending because they are the agency that has the expertise and they really know what is best for the city. That last momentum translates into more time spent at intersections, which means a greater likelihood of getting into a crash. Bikers can roll through stop signs, but they have to yield to cars. No biker will try to take a car out. I mentioned the rain drops coming in tomorrow. But thats a winter storm warning. This will equate to one, two, three feet of snow between now and basically monday morning. And so be prepared, the chains will be likely required for saturday evening and sunday morning and probably sunday evening as well. And maybe monday morning as well more of an impact for the mountains with the low snow levels for sunday down to 2,800 feet, 2,500 feet. So we are talking about the ski reports. The bases are running almost 20 feet. And these are at top of the mountain in the upper lodges, but big, big numbers. So theres plenty of snow. Just prepare youre for the drive up there tomorrow especially in the afternoon. There is the rain up north here and it slips south as we head into tomorrow. The clouds outside, theyre plentiful with lots of clouds now. And it basically filled in tonight and everybody is cloudy for your morning and they start mainly lunchtime. And they are very light and very weak. And born with a southerly wind, which means they will start blowing up towards the north. It will turn to the left a little bit there clockwise.
