No question about that. Reporter two candidates, one stage, who came out on top . Reporter donald, i know you live in your own reality. All talk, no action, sounds good, does it work . Reporter and a contentious first debate good evening im julie haener. Im frank somerville. A big night for both candidates arguing about the range of topics from isis to the economy and from Business Savvy to the birther controversy, tax returns to race relations. Ktvu ross palombo is here now to begin our coverage tonight. Reporter they pack just about everything into these first 90 minutes. Not just the issues, but the techniques, we saw it all. Hillary clinton and republican nominee for president of the united states. Donald j. Trump. Reporter it was billed at the political price fight. After both sides shook hands. Both soon started swinging. I call it trumped up, trickle down, which is exactly what it would be. Reporter Hillary Clinton lead to the first punch on the economy, but trump immediately hit back. You havent done it in 20 years, 26 years. Ive been a senator, donald and a secretary of state and i have done a lot. It is one of the worse things that ever happened. Well thats your opinion. Reporter both went back and forth on the transpacific partnership. That is just not accurate. You called it the Gold Standard of crazies. You said its the finest deal that youve ever seen. Then you heard what i said about it and all of a sudden you were against it. Donald, i know you live in your own reality, but that is not the facts. Reporter they quickly escalated over trumps tax returns. I will release my tax returns against my lawyers wishes when she releases her 33,000 emails that have been deleted. As soon as she releases them, i will release my tax returns. Reporter or maybe he doesnt want the american people, all of you watching here tonight to know that he has paid nothing in federal taxes because there is something hes hiding. Reporter and then of course they fired over clintons e mails. I made a mistake using a private email. And if i had to do it over again, i would obviously do it differently. I think that it is disgraceful and believe me the country thinks that it is disgraceful also. Reporter during most of it, Hillary Clinton managed to maintain a smile. Donald trump a sort of chin up smurk. So he has a long record of engaging in racist behavior. The birther lie was a very hurtful one. Reporter it was over this issue on race that may have been the most damaging to donald trump and it may have been the most controversial. African americans, hispanics are living in hell because it is so dangerous. It is really unfortunate that he paves such a dire negative paints such a negative picture of black communities in our country. Reporter also questions on foreign policy, russian president vladimir putin, libya, and iraq. Donald supported the invasion of iraq. Wrong. That is absolutely proved. Then the final question of Hillary Clintons health or stamina. She doesnt have the look, she doesnt have the stamina. As soon as he travels to 112 can countries and negotiates or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a Congressional Committee he can talk to me about stamina. Reporter reporter after 90 minutes round one was over. And it wasnt immediately clear who left the ring. Okay. As champion. If she wins i will absolutely support her. I sure hope that you would get out and vote as though your future depended on it. Well both candidates had successes tonight. Hillary showed a little levity, trump used fewer personal attacks. It was a long debate though in the end. Did it make a difference . Did anyone come out on top . Well historically someone does get a pump in the polls afterwards, but historically, frank and julie it doesnt usually last. Lets talk more about it now joining us is james taylor, professor of politics at the university of San Francisco and our political analyst brian sobel. Brian, who do you think came out on top . A balance based on her ability to recite facts and that sort of thing. I think that she took it by a little bit. But donald trump isnt lose tonight. He maintained his base, she maintained her base and probably brought on some of the folks who are looking for somebody a little to her side. James, would you agree . Yes, afterwards, you know, i watched it here. I thought that trump held his own. When i went home to watch the postgame show on all the major channels, the interpretation is very different that donald trump and he lost soundedly. Even suggested that it was a shutout and just sort of political, for example the headline is that Hillary Clinton will get under Donald Trumps skin and took the debate. So that is what i thought earlier, you know, it wasnt the 90 minutes on the stage, but the 90 hours after. What do you think was Donald Trumps biggest mistake tonight . I thought he walked into the birther thing and couldnt get out. The more he tried to justify it, the more Hillary Clinton interrogated it. And i just thought it was a losing argument for him to try to make. Brian, it sounds like the debate, it was actually two debates. It felt like donald trump came out very strong, his answers were crisp, clear, concise. And then in the second half it felt like he kind of fell apart and his answers, they were meandering and he was going all over the map. Right, i think you put your finger on it. I think the first 30 minutes were trump. Frankly it was in his strong suit. You know, the economic issues, trade, that sort of thing really played to his strengths. As the debate went on it started shifting. By the time it was over, Hillary Clinton had clearly done better in the second part of that debate. One of the main themes was national security. Who do you think did a better job in keeping americans safe . You know, i thought it was sort of a toss up as they both made points. But you could never forget that Hillary Clinton as she has pointed out has traveled all over the world. Donald trump though, he speaks from the heart of some americans who think that we are not doing enough, the American Security issue. So again some toss up issues, julie. Most people, they have made up their mind, they decided who they are going to vote for it. I imagine that tonights debate probably didnt change for everyone, maybe 13 of the registered voters. Do you think that it made it clear who they would go for . Yes, again as they would say earlier what the debate does for sure is sure up the support that does exist. I think that Hillary Clinton gave people a chance to think twice. Like the way that they would have an open pitch to people around college debt that he sounded like bernie sanders, which is an open sort of, you know, appeal to young people to vote for her. If you think that there is one issue out there tonight that Hillary Clinton struggled with, what would you say it was . Her emails. She got lucky that donald trump was disrupted by his taxes. But if he harped on it and prepared to interrogate her around it to catch her and cross it up that it would have been genius, but he didnt do it. I do. She was, you know, i hate to use the term robotic, but she was very well rehearsed. Trump was trump. And i think that because he wasnt as rehearsed as her that he lost the opportunity to seize on some of these issues like benghazi, like the clinton foundation, like the email controversy because he has too many things going on in his mind standing on that stage before what may be a record 100 million people. It kind of felt like it was a 15round fight and donald trump won the first few rounds, Hillary Clinton won the last round. In the end the judges would give it to Hillary Clinton based on points. No knockdowns, no knockouts, but she won it on points. Yes, the last 30 seconds he would get the point. The split decision kind of thing. All right, a few more debates to come. The first of three. Absolutely. Gentlemen, thank you. Youre welcome. Now to the voters around the bay area tonight people gathered in living rooms, libraries, and restaurants to watch and discuss this debate. Our Team Coverage picks up right now with ktvu amber lee who is live in San Francisco. Amber, you attend add non partisan watch event attended a nonpartisan watch event . Reporter thats right julie, we are just outside hotel zeta downtown San Francisco. The watch party was held up on the second floor, but there was an overflow of the crowds here on the main floor, more than 200 people turned out for the event. The central question in this election is really what kind of country you want to be in and what kind of future that well build together. Reporter as soon as the two president ial candidates took to the stage, all eyes focused on multiple screens. It is just a big reality show. And so from what, you know, i dont know. That if you went out there. The income is plowed as 694 million for this past year. Reporter in forum a division of the Commonwealth Club and the brigade of the Voters Network promoted this as a nonpartisan watch party. But the crowd, they were made up of mostly registered democrats and most are decidedly for Hillary Clinton. You have a lot of interruptions on both sides and it will be quite interesting to see how much Fact Checking goes on during the debate that we can get real answers. Reporter this voter says he doesnt support clinton or trump. Hes leaning towards libertarian gary johnson, but says he can be swayed. With all economic beings that those are the really important decisions. Reporter but still undecided, no. It is undecided between johnson. Reporter people watched in a casual atmosphere, gathered in small groups on couches and chairs. Though many have made up their minds they still want to hear from both candidates. You have what is called down. I want people to walk away hopefully optimistic and thinking that we have candidates ahead of us who have americas best interest at heart. That they are listening to the american people. Reporter organizers plan to hold the Debate Watch Party for each of the Upcoming Event as they say that it is a forum for people to express different ideas and opinions, julie, frank . Amber lee live in San Francisco tonight. Amber, thank you. Tonight at 10 30 Fact Checking the debate. What the candidates got right tonight and where they may have strayed from the truth. And firefighters face a long night ahead battling a massive wildfire. Well have the very latest from cal fire and show you the fight that firefighters are up against. Record warmth in the bay area for the second straight day. A spare the air day tomorrow and well have more after the break. Breaking news tonight in the Santa Cruz Mountains where a wildfire is is burning out of control at this hour near the top of loma prieta. The fire has already burned 1,000 acres after roaring to life this afternoon. At this hour it is threatening homes and forcing evacuations. The socalled loma fire is burning in rugged terrain east of highway 17 between morgan hill and santa cruz. Our chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the hot weather in that area. First though lets hear from ktvu who is on the scene tonight with the latest on the fire and the evacuees. Reporter a lot of the people are anxious and nervous tonight. You can see why. This picture really speaks for itself. At this hour this fire is actively raging on along the Loma Prieta Ridge line. You can see the flames are visible in the night sky here. It is 5 contained, and we know at this hour at least one structure had been destroyed. Tonight the loma fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains is showing no signs of letting up as crews face a long and challenging night ahead. 300 homes lie in the fires path and dangerously close television and radio transmission towers as well. Im a little nervous. A little off struck. That is not something you see every day. Reporter mike zamotti lives on the road along where dozens of people evacuated. I have a place right there on the top of the ridge. Just looking down on it hoping that it doesnt sneak down into the canyon and come back up. Reporter the wildfire starting at 2 40 this afternoon on loca chiquita Loma Chiquita road, providing a huge amount of smoke visible. Im thinking its a lot of smoke for sure. And hopefully no more houses burn down. Reporter hundreds of firefighters on the ground battling the blaze, cal fire helicopters are fighting the fire from the air, a difficult and intensifier fight with the triple digit heat, steep rugged terrain and heavy dry vegetation. Just keeping them packing up their belongings, not taking any chances. Im worry firstdegree the fire gets to the bottom of the ridge that it will climb up and get to my place here. He lives on the road of the volunteer firefighters, that he sprang into action worried that they could burn down. When i saw it happening while the trucks were going by, you know, that it will be grabbing the shovels. And the gloves, water, they would head on out. Reporter some residence say that they are no stranger to fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains, optimistic that firefighters will get the upper hand. And now it looks like it is heading east. And that would be still in santa clara county. And we are in Santa Cruz County here. And so we are basically Santa Cruz County on hold. Reporter well you see the fire slowly creeping over the ridge where they estimate to be about 200 yards away. But the good news is that it is is relatively calm in terms of the winds. Again though firefighters have to be very careful because it is nighttime and rugged steep terrain out here. An Evacuation Center has been set up at so Cal High School and also the Sheriffs Office is making reverse 911 calls to alert residence in case that their homes are being threatened and that the cause of this fire is still under investigation. Now to chief meteorologist bill martin. Bill, hot, dry conditions today . Yes, more record Straight Days in a row and a spare the air day today with a heat advisory today. In this area where the fire is, here is whats happening as temperatures have dropped a good 15 degrees from where the fire started. The humidity has come up a few degrees with virtually no wind that is obviously very good for firefighters, and so the conditions, they are not horrible for firefighters other than the very dry conditions, the fuel moisture in the single digit as this area where the fire is burning now is very close to where we would have a big fire in the area, if you remember that it happened seven years ago where they would evacuate the community of fayetteville. They had to evacuate this community again this evening. Its more of a summer parttime community, but theyve had to evacuate that area as this High Pressure continues to stick around tomorrow. The fire conditions are going to be very similar to what we had today. And so it is not as hot tomorrow, but the conditions will be very close. And that means that firefighters will have their work cut out for them. This is not driven by the weather as much as it is driven by the very remote tough to get to vertical terrain. When i come back we will talk about a cool down that is coming, but it is a ways off. Now to Sonoma County where fire crews are making Good Progress on the wildfire burning near the geysers. To want the official containment is at 45 when sky fox flew overhead about three this afternoon, no smoke could be seen. It was a far different story yesterday. The socalled saw mill fire started around 11 00 on sunday morning. Off big geysers road about 10 miles east of cloverdale. The winds stayed calm for much of the day today and crews vented that fire from spreading. However evacuation orders are still in place and the cause of the fire is under investigation. They started an organization to bring their epidemic into the open, pointing to the overdose death two weeks ago of the 23yearold who grew up, but ended up on the streets with the health and drug issues. Their body was found behind the starbucks near some dumpsters as they were expected in his death. It will happen to someone else. That is the scariest part. We can open the curtains to say hey, you know, this is happening in our families. This could happen in yours that it is not a gutter problem. This is our problem. Yeah, why not. You know, just join the debate. By saying crazy things. It is nothing crazy about not letting them bring their money back into their country. And the first debate is history. Hillary clinton and donald trump went head to head tonight and they didnt hold back. Joel waldman is at Hofstra University where the debate was held. What was the reaction afterwards for those people there . Reporter good evening to you, rather we were in this spin room, which was next door. I can tell you this ahead of the debate just a few minutes before 9 00, i was in a room filled with about 3,000 plus members of the media and their journalist and the camera men and people of that like. I have never heard a room with those types of people, members of the media so incredibly quiet ahead of the 9 00 hour and then seeing that there were members of the media, 9 00 struck and the debate didnt start, everyone started to panic. It turns out that it did not technically start until 9 03 eastern time. 6 03 out there. So there is a collective sigh of relief once it actually began. Of course there was a little wiggle room for them to kind of throw to this debate, which was seen on stage into the cross country. They are expecting it again to receive record ratings numbers, upwards of 100 million people, which are super bowl numbers. But really the consensus among people in that spin room and that it was that the debate was probably won by Hillary Clinton, but overall that it was underwhelming when all said and done and very likely that those that were in favor of donald trump beforehand were not swayed otherwise as is the case with Hillary Clintons supporters, you know, they were not swayed away from voting for her, guys. Im just curious. What is the reaction to the moderator . In this case it was lester holt. Do people in general, the spin room are they saying that they think that he treated the candidates fairly tonight . Reporter you know, it kind of depends on who you ask and that is sort of the answer for a lot of things, as it relates to politics. And an interesting side note, donald trump came out into the spin room kind of complaining about it right away about the microphone that he was given saying that it wasnt working properly within the debate hall. He sort of said that perhaps it was done on purpose. Donald trump himself said that he felt that the moderator, lester holt and the anchor of nightly news and nbc that he did a pretty good job. Rudy giuliani came out, he basically blasted lester holt saying that he got way too involved and he was way too partisan on Hillary Clintons side specifically when it came to the issue of stop and frisk. You knee lester holt presented that you know, lester holt presented that question. The place that they would have it in new york city and lester holt said it was deemed unconstitutional. And then donald trump responded by saying, you know, that it is not exactly the case because it went through a bunch of different courts, only the Circuit Court found it unconstitutional and mayor de blasio took over. But for the most part, lester holt did a pretty good job, but maybe some feel that he got a little too involved, others feel like not too much. Joel waldman in Hofstra University, one debate down, two to go. Facebook followed when users were posting during and after tonights debate. The most talked about debate is when he said that my strongest asset is my temperament. Showing that 79 of the posts and the conversations centered around donald trump. 21 were about Hillary Clinton. Now to the candidates statements tonight in the non partisan Fact Checkers that are working to certify some of their key points, what they got wrong and right. There was a lot of live responses to the Fact Checking as there were at least half a dozen organizations that were doing realtime checking. We were watching them and pulled some examples as we talked to an expert how about how much it factored into their decisions. Reporter face to face in the debate. Their statements at times flew in the space of the facts. I dont buy that. While they would create 10 million new jobs, they said that at most they would create 3. 2 million. The trade deficit is 805 billion, but they are saying that the deficit is not that high. And they are saying that it stopped their Nuclear Program without violence, but they say that clinton is correct. Accusing clinton of flip flopping on the transpacific partnership. With that they said that trump was right. And he accused Hillary Clinton of starting the birther question, not true according to multiple Fact Checkers. Often the feeling is going to trump the facts. Reporter Eric Shickler chair of the uc berkeley Science Department says that because of the controversial candidates, Fact Checking has become a big issue. One thing that researchers have shown is that it is very hard to persuade people to change their minds about facts. Reporter he says often people are predisposed to believe their candidate no matter what the facts say. That your partisanship and prior support for the cant dad will shape what you say and how you respond to Fact Checking, it is a slice to voters that this thing could act fast. And the professor says that at this state 40 of the voters have decided on trump and clinton no matter what they say, so Fact Checking is important to shape the 20 or so in the middle. Think about these issues. Whats interesting is the next debate that will be a town hall style meeting. The candidates speaking face to face with voters, the different kind of dynamics. It is a little harder to do it to a person that will cast their votes as perhaps to the other candidate. Yes, it is interesting as it seemed like it was fairly even on some getting it right and wrong and as far as Hillary Clinton and donald trump . That is something that we will see as the days go on and it goes more in depth. 90 minutes is hard to do on the spot. We want people to go and see it for themselves. Yeah, thank you. Our coverage will continue on our website and also on our facebook page. You can watch all 90 minutes of the debate. The cars submerged in water with people inside. Chp investigators say that Yarenit Malihan was driving under the influence when she crashed her suv into the back of the camry. How engineers are trying to get to the bottom of the tilting of the Millennium Tower highrise. No heat advisories tomorrow, but it will be another very warm day out there with the fire danger higher than you would like to see. A new effort is underway to determine just how much San Franciscos Millennium Tower is going to keep sinking, what if anything could be done to fix the problem. Crews are installing the sophisticated fencing systems at three locations. It is already sinking 16 inches, more than the four to six inches that engineers expected over its lifetime. We spoke to the engineer about the problem as he said that when they set off a few inches, it only happens after an earthquake or because of human error. Or they are inadequate codes as it is extremely unusual to be talking about large buildings with large amounts. He didnt sound hopeful about a solution, but instead that hes unaware of a 50foot building being stabilized or repaired after a significant settlement. And it is a hot one today, that there will not be one tomorrow, there will be a spare the air day tomorrow. We a record at 104. Wow. And you can see them on this record just right there, thats the kind of day that it will be for them tomorrow and with their cooling later on in the day. I think that were going to get those high temperatures, but that the winds will be developing late in the afternoon say 4 00 to 5 00. If we come in close typically at this time of the year and this type of pattern after a few days that they will start to see the fog showing up, right . Down the south area. As that fog shows up, we can account on a bit of a southerly flow and then a surge. Were not seeing that. Look at their wind direction here. That were seeing the no fog, we are basically seeing no on shore flow, which will happen tonight, but not now. Thats the environmental crew that ill look for, the major cool down for your tuesday, but it is not there. It will be cooler, 81 at concord. It is still pretty narrow with a little dense fog, but it is not there yet. It will be a hot one tomorrow, the model will do this as they are suggesting that some fog to come in that it will be tough. It is possible, but there will be more later on in the day that it is suffice to say the onshore breeze will get going pretty good and that will shut down some of those 100s that we saw today. The mid to upper 90s in those valley areas. Over the next few days, the High Pressure will weaken and we will get a cool pattern developing, its not tomorrow though. It is mostly thursday and friday and significant cooling that will bring in the low pressure and that in the winter it will be rain. More fog and a little bit of wind with much cooler highs, but not tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a hot one. Santa clara valley with that poor air quality in the mid to upper 90s. Our friends and firefighters, down in the area, they are going to have that same conditions tomorrow. The winds will kick up with more on shore winds that will increase their humidity, but also that they will do a thing to move out even more as they know this that they need to deal it in between now and tomorrow. Weve got three really hot days and sure enough. Thank you, bill. Sports is next. Well be right back. This is the new comfort food. And it starts with foster farms simply raised chicken. California grown with no antibiotics ever. Immediate da day for how much excitement there is and how loaded this team is. The last few days, everywhere you go, you know what monday and tuesday are, right . I mean there are times they will call us up saying that it is media day. Good luck with that, but let us know how it goes. The warriors are the absolute best and youve got a little glimpse of what it will be like for this season. Just look at the crowd out there, the meet and greet as they will open tomorrow. They will get a chance today to basically gear up for the media on slot that is going to happen. You know to me that it sounds like they have kind of rehearsed and figured out that there will be a lot of scrutiny. Buckle up. The world is coming to an end and the warriors need to start how they did last year. That is a problem because they lost more games in the first 25 games than they did last year. Ive already prepared myself for that mentally because i know its coming. I look forward to the challenges ahead of us and i look forward to trying to win a championship. You know its coming. Boy the emotions in miami, very raw. A story we wish we didnt have to bring you after the tragic death of jose fernandez, the star pitcher of the marlins over the weekend. Today they had to play a game and that is d. D. Gordon putting his hat and cap there. Goes back to switch the left hand and the very next pitch is gone a home run, dee gordon had not hit a home run as you can see the emotions as they come across the plate. Everybody in the miami organization that uniforms up wearing a fernandez jersey and obviously that the emotions there, 73 the final. Miami gears it up and beats the mets 73. Trades sometimes dont work out. Giants will tell you all about that. Man, how would this guy look in a giants uniform . Adam duval, two homers. They trade him last year for mike leak. He had rbis, beating st. Louis to help the giants 162. The final half a game up for the giants number one in that spot and the wild card and then the giants, they are one up on st. Louis. Well considering what the as have left for this season that they are going through the motions. Basically they are counting down the vacations, what you would call it. Some guys, they are auditioning for a job next year, some guys are trying to fatten their stat sheet and why not . You know mike trout, he has homered earlier. They even it up with another solo shot. They do have a fan down there in disney land and their 13th by the way. Albert pujols with so many big time home runs with the little grounder there in the 8th inning with the bases loaded. Especially what was to be their game deciding run. 21 the final. But we will go back to the pennant races where the emotions are just raw here too. A lot of tension, a lot of pressure and the yankees will be going at it tonight in canada. Josh donaldson the former as hit by the pitch from severino and then it is jay happ retaliating as youll see the emotions there when the benches clear. Then they just continue to go back and forth and basically an oldtime bean ball war as youll see the isolation on Josh Donaldson as hell come out to get involved in that emotion and then finds some suspension for them to follow. Toronto, they are still in contention for the playoff birth to end up blowing a game in the 9th inning as the yankees will end up winning it 75. That wont be the last youll hear of that story considering the offensive problems to say the least for the San Francisco 49ers. This guy might look pretty good in the 49er uniform, available. Talking about reese who he interviewed this summer up in napa. Reese a perennial fullback, but thats the position thats kind of on the way out in professional football and as he is released today by the raiders. They were 1710 winners, but he is out of a job. Anthony davis retires from the 49ers again. Thats the sporting line. Again, yeah, again the second time. Mark, thank you. Well see you later everyone. Good night. Thanks for joining us, good night.
