This was the scene after a huge fire started at the building under construction. Investigators say the fire started at 4 30 this morning. Within 5 minutes, crews were on the scene. At that time, they saw heavy smoke billowing from the center of the structure. Reporter as the fire continues to burn, a crane used by a construction crew was spinning like a top out of control. Endangering firefighters and residents in the area, a few hours later, crews had the fire contained. Officials say quick work by all involved helped save lives. With a fire this size, it is miraculous that weve had no loss of life, no injuries. Majority of the building under construction has either fallen on itself or on the streets. Crews continued to put out hot spots and worry about the unstable crane that looms overhead. Theyre bringing in heavy equipment tonight, and will dismantle parted scaffolding part of the scaffolded tomorrow. Reporter investigators need to secure the scene so they can figure out what caused the 186 Housing Units to go up in flames. Officials say the structure was expected to open in march of next year bringing a small relief to the housing crunch in oakland. Officials say the fire is just a minor set back and the city plans to move forward. The contractor and developer will take the structure down. So test the integrity of the foundation and begin to rebuild. This is a loss for our city, and for this region right now. And that is why we are so determined to insure that we get to the bottom of what caused it.
