She has been with the demonstrators for much of the night, but stopped for a moment to bring us this live report. Reporter julie, were at 14th and clay right by city hall. This was the starting point for tonights march. Just a few minutes ago, some of the protesters marched through here again. This demonstration has largely been peaceful, until about an hour ago. We saw some protesters vandalize a Neighborhood Market and other businesses, and some spray painted a building. It appears Police Arrested a man for that incident. This is the repeat of some of what happened. The two previous nights of protest. The demonstrators have been on the move since shortly before 7 30. The marchers are a diverse group. One 20yearold says hes been stopped and roughed up by police, simply because hes a young black man. See how the system works. Reporter some protesters tell me they joined the march after getting off work. This mother and grandmother says family members have been mistreated by police. She says this march is about standing up for them. My sons were encountered by police themselves. My grandson was beaten by san angeles police, but theyre still living. Im marching. Reporter she says she doesnt condone the violence that has erupted, and plans to leave tonights march as soon as trouble starts. As they marched, the protesters tried to garner support. Their chance to grab the attention of people along the route. Some watch from their homes, and others on the street. It moves you. It shows you that people do expose themselves for a rightful cause, for a just cause. Reporter we will continue to monitor the situation out here and bring you developments as they happen. Just a couple of things. Weve heard of at least one arrest so far, what are you hearing about arrests, and are these people, a lot of them from oakland . Or are you getting a sense that other people are coming in to take part in this protest . Reporter the people that i talk to are from oakland. I saw a wide range of people, all different ages, some came after school, after work. There is a Large Police Presence out here, they were on foot. Some were in riot gear. Motorcycles, we saw them guarding the Federal Building as well. As for arrests, we saw one incident where a man was arrested for spray painting a building. Amber last night, the protests ended around 11 30. Is the protest still picking up steam now, or are you seeing people start to leave . Reporter there are still a number of people around here. I see less of a crowd than what was here earlier. Its hard to say, these people are energetic, and passionate about their cause. Amber lee, live in oakland. Oakland police say they arrested 92 in last nights protest. Compare that to ferguson, where authorities arrested 45 people, half as many. So many are for vandalizing businesses. Several store owners complained that police were ineffective, because they didnt stop vandals from breaking windows, looting, and causing other damage. 43 of the 92 people arrested last night ended up in jail. A list from the Alameda County Sheriffs Department shows that most of them are from oakland. There is a call tonight for a nationwide economic boycott on black friday. The man who made fruitville station is behind the idea. It is called blackout for human rights. He wants people across the country to avoid shopping on black friday. People who feel powerless, an ability to flex their financial muscle. What would be better, what i would think, is if we could get all of the African Americans that are eligible to vote to go and vote. Change the leadership. Change the people that are in authority. Reporter Bishop Jackson says political change could help empower. It is much calmer in ferguson tonight. Its also colder. Snow fell today. Tonight, there are fewer protesters out on the street. Reporter garrett penny is live with us in ferguson for a third consecutive night. Garrett, are you noticing a difference tonight . Reporter yeah, its a significant difference here frank. Right now, there is only about 30, maybe 40 protesters outside fergusons police department. They are mostly peaceful. Earlier, there was another group marching. But its all been peaceful here. Police say tay the National Guards presence here on the streets has made a significant difference. It has freed up Police Officers to interact with those demonstrators, and get any troublemakers that are there off the street. The other difference, as you mentioned, is the weather. Today, there was snowfall throughout the day. Right now, were getting a little bit of snowfall again. Police say that has made a difference as well. They say a polar vortex right now would be very welcome. Another difference is folks stepping out the community, throughout the day, you had people going up to the businesses with windows broken, and looted throughout the week. Theyre now boarding them up. Artists are coming out, and painting murals on them saying, please come back, st. Louis is love. Right now, police are hoping this is a turning point in ferguson, and across st. Louis. Garrett, last night, there were 2200 National Guard members out there. Is it still the same tonight . Or have they sent any of them home . I also understand there is a call for the governor to resign for how those National Guard troops were deployed. Reporter yeah, the National Guard troops are still on the ground. They have been positioned throughout the city of ferguson, as well as st. Louis too. There are a lot of people questioning why they werent sent out earlier, fergusons former mayor, Ryan Fletcher told us earlier today, this was a disgrace to have this type of thing to happen. He was calling for the governor to resign. In talking with a lot of local law enforcement, they feel he has messed this situation up as well, and they wouldnt mind seeing that happen either. Governor jay nixon responded to a lot of those criticisms, saying the National Guard was in place, that they just werent in the right locations at the time, and that that is why he has increased the presence, and hes focusing on the difference theyve made since hes been here. A will the of folks still unhappy with that decision though. The mother of Michael Brown spoke out today, she described her emotions when she heard the grand jury decided not to indict officer darren wilson. Reporter we heard these, and it was just like i had been shot. Like you shoot me now. Just no respect. No sympathy, nothing. And so my emotions were raging. The parents said their son was humbled, silly, and soft spoken. They also said they dont believe officer browns account of the confrontation. They also say their son would not have taunted the officer or tried to grab his gun. Back now to the situation in oakland. The march still on the way in downtown streets. Police right there, detaining what looks like a woman there on the left. We have heard earlier that the crowd of about 200 people was on the move in downtown oakland. We are following this developing story. The crowds, we should let you know, has been mostly peaceful tonight, as they started moving around 7 30 tonight. There have been some reports of smashing windows, setting small fires, and spray painting. Weve had a number of arrests. We showed you earlier a couple of people. The crowds at the ticket counters were light. Departing flights were on time, but the arrival board showed delays back east. Flight delays from new york, and boston. Her sons boston flight, delayed. He started off in providence, rhode island, and left providence a little early to beat the storm and got to the airport in plenty of time, however, it was delayed for two hours. The most since the recession. 2 investigates stories of being randomly stopped by Oakland Police, even arrested. Im actually a Community Leader in my neighborhood. Ive been slammed on the car. The thing near 60 of them had in common. A forecast youll want to feast your eyes on. The holiday highs, and when conditions will take a term for the stormy. Next, little sebastian survived falling from a 200 foot cliff. My son is a miracle. The remarkable progress hes making and the one milestone his mom told us shes still waiting for. For one family in the north bay, they have a lot to be thankful for after a near tragedy on a cliff at bodega head. Talking to the mother of a little by from santa rosa who recently fell more than 200 feet down a cliff. Reporter frank, it was quite unbelievable that it happened that a 4yearold could somehow survive such a harrowing fall. But not only did little sebastian survive, he has improved greatly. Now out of a coma, hes on the road to recovery. The sweeping videos of the Pacific Ocean are dramatic. Here in bodega bay is where the drama began. Kind of devastating really. Hard to sit by and watch my son suffer. Reporter jamie has basically been living at ucsf Childrens Hospital in oakland, since her son sebastian was rushed here on november 10. The 4yearold suffered critical injuries when he fell from the steep rocky cliff more than 200 feet. Rescue crews hauled him up the cliff. He has a broken orbital socket. And broken cheek bone. His left cheek had several fractures, and his nose was fractured. Reporter he also suffered a broken leg and broken arm. When he finally awoke . A huge sense of relief. I felt like my heart was being put back together again. Reporter but the little boy who loves dressing up like a Police Officer, or teenage mutant ninja turtle has yet to speak. She is hoping the words will return. Just yesterday, she took sebastian for his first walk around the hospital in his wheelchair. Nobody drops from that far and lives, so my son is a miracle. Hes amazing, and hes coming along faster than we expected him to. Reporter jamie looks forward to the days when sebastian doesnt need the wheelchair, the feeding tube, or the doctors and nurses. She is thankful they exist, and really thankful her son survived. We might not have had him. Do you think about that . I do. I think about how lucky we are. Lucky indeed. Sebastian receives therapy four to five times a day. Frank and julie, he is expected to remain there at Childrens Hospital for at least another one to possible three months. You see the pictures of that cliff. Its just remarkable that he survived. So there is concern that he may not talk again. That is a very big concern. Jamie told me that is just one of the unknowns here. Because of that steep, steep cliff. He did hit the back of his head, as with any head injury, they just dont know. At least hes alive and hes come out of the coma. He really is a little miracle boy. We wish him the best. Heather thank you. The San Francisco zoo says it is making changes to ensure the safety of its gorrilas, after a baby gorrila died recently. The 16monthold was rushed to death with an electric door. The zoo says it will also require two zookeepers to be present when the gorrilas are being moved, and hire a full time gorrila expert. It was one of only about 750 in captivity. In san jose, the spirit of the Holiday Season came alive tonight. An estimated 7500 people are homeless, and living on the streets there, and tonight, hundreds of them got a hot holiday meal. The volunteer effort to serve all of those homeless folks. Reporter frank, for those who pack this community center, a hot meal is sometimes hard to come by. They got that hot meal, and they also got fellowship. The kind even bringing one woman to tears. Inside the San Jose Community center. Volunteers arent just serving turkey with all the fixings, theres serving up hope to homeless families, including christina scott. Mother of 4. I dont mind going through this. My kids always tell me they just want to go home. And its like, we dont have a home where they can just do whatever they want. Weve been doing this 20 years. Reporter he says the Homeless Demographic is changing, especially when we all know housing isnt cheap. Reporter on this night, these families arent focusing on what they dont have. Theyre realizing what they do have. For 6yearold nadan his favorite part. Shelby bates and her sister are saving their allowance, and paying for the food. Her sister britney, even selling her Old School Books on ebay. Just to be able to be a part of their lives, theyll remember that all the time. Reporter their generosity appreciated by this woman who used to be homeless, but is now paying it forward. Its a blessing to be off the streets. And its a blessing to be able to come to this ministry and help. Reporter this ministry is serving up thanksgiving meal a dinner early, since a lot of places will be serving free meals, including catholic charities, and the blue chip restaurants in san jose. That was really nice, and listening to shelby talking about why she wanted to give back, that was wonderful. This is 14th and broadway right in the heart of downtown oakland. Its where the protest actually began at about 7 00 tonight. Weve been watching arrest after arrest. It looks, judging from these pictures like the there is still closed. Several people being taken into custody. Several groups have splintered into smaller groups. This is the third consecutive night that protesters have marched the streets of oakland, and then vandalized property as the evening went on. All of these protesters are demonstrating against the grand jury decision in ferguson, missouri, that cleared a white Police Officer of shooting and killing a black teenager. New information now in the shooting that left a man dead along a hiking trail in the oakland hills. We learned today the victim was 60yearold david ruenzel. Reporter its the perfect day for a hike in nature. Its just across there. Reporter but this morning nature was closed for business. Doesnt seem like a place that there would be a murder out on the trail. Reporter yesterday witnesses report hearing three gunshots in the huckleberry botanic regional preserve in the bay area hills, turning this park into a crime scene. Investigators found shell casings, a bullet, and the victim, 60yearold david ruenzel. Described by his family as an avid hiker who loved the solace on the traily he was killed. Sorry for the victim, the family, and everybody else. Reporter turning visitors away to let investigators look on the trail. Huckleberry trail, as you know is really a peaceful Little Corner of the east bay hills. Reporter now the backdrop of a mystery, waiting to be solved. In oakland, noel walker, ktvu, channel 2 news. Police say they are working on composite sketches of two men seen in the area about the time of the shooting. They plan to release them when their completed. In San Francisco tonight, volunteers were busy helping to prepare thanksgiving dinners. 4,000 meals will be created right here, with all your help. Reporter mayor ed lee, and police chief greg suhr among those who turned out in the tenderloin to carve out the turkeys that will be served tomorrow. The dining room is expecting to serve about 4800 pounds of turkey. 1,000pounds of stuffing, and 4,000 individual pumpkin pies. Just a few blocks away at clive memorial church, volunteers were chopping hams, and carrots, and getting all the fixings ready for tomorrow. The reverend says 5,000 people will sit down in their dining room. They will enjoy the food, but they will also enjoy the fellowship. Being with each other, and sharing with each other, looking at each other, touching each other, eating with each other. This is the 30th year that glide has provided thanksgiving meals to those in need. Tens of thousands of police stops in one city. 2 investigates, crunches the numbers and finds the statistic that some people say is troubling. A state lawmaker is fighting to get workers extra pay for working on holidays. Assembly woman lorrainea gonzalez is working on a bill that would require double pay on thanksgiving and christmas. Last year, they successfully pushed through legislation guaranteeing californians up to three days a year of paid sick leave. Police are making arrests on the streets of oakland at this hour after the protesters turn to vandalism. It is the third night of protests in oakland over the ferguson, grand jury decision. A lot of anger spilling out from ferguson and across the country has to do with what many perceives a routine buy as by police against people of color. Tonight, 2 investigates looks at tens of thousands of police stops in oakland going back to last year. Ktvus rob roth now has the numbers. Many say they reflect their daily reality. Reporter a High School Senior with a scholarship to San Jose State University already in his pocket, but he says he often gets stopped by police for no reason. He said it happened again two nights ago. He asked why i had my hood on. I told him because it was cold. He kept asking me questions. Reporter developing leadership in young people. Hes apparently far from alone in his experience. Ktvu obtained the records of all Oakland Police stops for a 19 month period from april of 2013 to the end of last month. Heres what they show. Of the more than 44,000 People Police stopped during that time, almost 60 were african american. More than three times more than hispanics, the next highest race. African americans make up less than a third of the population. The record shows 13 of all stops led to arrests. Like 28yearold kareem, almost a quarter of all stops were African Americans between 18 and 29 years old. Ive been pulled over while ive been driving. Same excuse that there was a robbery around the corner and you fit the description. Oakland is fairly typical of the rest of the country. Police just randomly stopping people, it doesnt help solve crimes, it doesnt prevent violent crime. Its really squandering our police resources. Reporter and he says often causes mistrust of police, which can lead to the kind of anger pouring out of ferguson, missouri. You create harm when you stop people for no reason, because you infringe upon their rights as a citizen. Reporter civil rights attorney john burres says oakland is making Great Strides in Building Trust and reforming the department. Training is improving, but more training is going to occur as we get more information and do some analysis work around the stops. Reporter still this shooting of the unarmed Michael Brown in ferguson strikes close to home. They want to ask how they act, ill just continue to act cool, because i dont want to have them accidently pull a gun out on me and shoot me. The man at the center of last weeks Security Breach at san jose airport appeared in court today. He is accused of entering a restricted area on sunday. Airport security detained him, and say he stole a maintenance truck and tried to escape. Surveillance video shows him in terminal b, where surveillance says he parked that stolen truck. Police arrested him a short time later. Its still unclear how he managed to get into the secure area. A judge released him on a promise he will return to his next court appearance. The faa is to require a fix on boeings wings on the new dreamliners. The faa says a sensor failure could cause the plane to go off the runway, while landing on a short runway, or in severe weather. It would affect 15 planes in the u. S. , and cost 935 per plane. There are 197 dreamliners worldwide. There is new hope tonight for preventing the spread of the ebola virus. Glaxosmithkline says it has seen promising results in the first trials. The Ebola Outbreak in sierra leone may have reached its peak. The three countries reported a combined 600 new ebola cases last week according to the world health organization. A restaurant in San Francisco that helps at Risk Community members celebrated its students tonight. The students are part of a program called chefs or conquering homelessness through employment in food services. Giving me the extra knowledge in culinary period and i did a good job and im getting paid. Relax, enjoy, dont have to think about anything but having good food, and good company. In five minutes, bill parton, and the wet weather hes tracking for the holiday weekend. An unusual burglary at a high end San Francisco boutique. Its how the thieves got in that has police worried. Back now to developing news in downtown oakland. Amber lee is live near 14th and broadway, where we have been watching Police Arrest a number of protesters in the last hour. Reporter weve been here on broadway between 14th and 15th. The tension is high between police and protesters. You can see the formation of police in riot gear. They just made the announcement to these protesters that they are going to move in and make an arrest for unlawful assembly. Just beyond the police, you can see a group of protesters smaller than what was here earlier, but still very vocal. Weve already seen dozens of arrests out here earlier for vandalism and unlawful assembly. Weve seen people breaking windows, spray painting buildings, and again, they were brought into the police and to my left down the street. You cant see them now, but you see all around me, there is a Strong Police presence. A lot of tolerance for illegal activity is a lot lower for these protesters, and again, any minute now, or any second, in fact, they are going to move in and make arrests. A Police Sergeant tells me there are other protesters splintered around other parts of the city, and theyre keeping an eye on those folks as well. Amber lee live in downtown oakland tonight. Thank you. Police are increasing patrols in San Franciscos union square after a pair of smash and grab robberies. Early this morning, at about 3 00, someone drove a car into the chanel boutique on maiden lane and smashed several businesses. Police say there is Surveillance Video of the burglary that shows two people involved. One driver, and then for the passenger that took the items, you cannot tell if it is a male or female, but it is a suspect wearing a hoody and capk and has a mask over his face. Police say the prada store on post street, just around the corner from chanel was also hit by drivein burglars if you will weeks ago. Big changes on the way as we head into this holiday end of week and weekend. Rain in the forecast, but not for thanksgiving. Its going to be dry tomorrow. All of this moisture and low pressure system is going to spin in off the pacific, and just sit offshore, set up shop off the west coast, and bring us multiple opportunities for significant rainfall. We could see 5, 6 inches of rain over this period in some of the heavier locations, maybe even more, maybe 8 inches in the coastal hills of santa cruz. Rain on the 29th, the 30th, the 1st and the 2nd. This is going to help us out a bit. Significant amounts of rain. A little bit starting on friday night, and it should ramp up as we head into friday, saturday, sunday, and monday. It breaks down that low that i showed you on the satellite map moves in. The first round gets here, the real first round late friday night into saturday morning. More rain on sunday, then monday and tuesday, heavy rain. Might even see Thunder Showers in here.
