Near butts canyon road and the pope valley area of napa county. We have Live Team Coverage tonight. Ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is standing by with the conditions firefighters are facing now. We begin with Ken Pritchett live tonight. Its a different story than this time last night but the danger still remains. It certainly is a different story. In some ways its the same and ill explain why. Just about 15 minutes ago you could see a slight orange glow over the top of that hill there. That orange glow is gone and thats indicative to what happened last night. The fire laid down when we had cooler temperatures overnight, virtually no wind. That gave firefighters an opportunity to make progress on that fire because they worked overnight. Those firefighters are working overnight tonight and essentially what were told, that fire is still burning but firefighters essentially have it surrounded. Reporter a chimney, a foundation, and a Swimming Pool muddied with ash. This is one of two homes destroyed in the butts canyon fire. About 200 homes were in its path, most in one subdivision. Were still considering homes threatened as the fire is active and we have the evacuation in place for there. Reporter today we saw multiple air tanker drops as the largest portion of the fire moved beyond line of sight and back in to the his. Hand crews trekked up steep slopes to cut containment lines. The fire essentially surrounded by those lines. The challenge is that we keep it within the containment lines and dont let it jump over the lines and hold it there. Reporter from news chopper 2 you can see there was more smoke than fire. The spread of the flames slowed but it grew by 600 acres just today, pushed by afternoon winds. The fire not just affecting homeowners and evacuees but businesses such as the marina on lake ber berryessa. We probably got at least 50 calls today on whether were still open. Reporter the 4th of july week shouldve been busy but the fire changed that. Today was unexpectedly slow. Normally well have 30 or 50 by noon and today we had maybe a third of that. Reporter the fire still a concern to the people who live close to the fire line. The dangerous work continues for more than 1,000 firefighters on the job. We do have Additional Resources still coming in, additional engines and hand crews coming in. I just read a tweet a few minutes ago from Los Angeles County fire which is sending resources out here to help out on this fire. Neighbors are still being kept out of the area. One issue is butts canyon road which goes up in to these hills here, there are rocks that have come off hillsides, sagging power lines, and a large number of fire trucks there. Cal fire expects that while this fire is slow and will be slow overnight, they do expect the acreage to grow by some amount overnight. In napa county, Ken Pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. More details now. Governor brown says the state has secured a federal grant which will allow Fire Agencies to apply for 75 reimbursement for their cost. 16 county, state, and tribal agencies are working to control the fire. The money is coming from fema, the federal Emergency Management agency. Meteorologist mark tamayo is tracking the changing conditions. Hes in our Weather Center now. Mark, is the weather cooperating tonight . Its kind of a phase. Last night we had improving conditions for this part of the bay area. Basically right now its happening again. We had the fog banked up shore. Winds out of the south at 22 miles per hour. That wind direction is key because that is importing some more moist air closer to the fire zone. Take a look at the current observations around the fire. Temperature of 73 degrees. We maxed out in the lower 90s around 93 degrees. The moisture levels as i mentioned are coming up during the 6 00 news, that relative humidity is around 30 . Right now its up to 57 . Thats great news. Also great news, the winds are not too much of a factor. Winds light and variable. Tomorrow the temperatures do soar back up once again in to the lower 90s. Ill break down the timing of our next warming trend. The ktvu. Com youll find the very latest on the fire burning in the north bay including extended video of the firefight. Just scroll down to the ktvu news video section. Happening now, a busy structure of the bay area freeway closed to traffic and its scheduled to remain closed right on through the long holiday weekend. About an hour ago construction work began along a normally busy stretch of interstate 280 in San Francisco. The work has shut down all northbound lanes of the freeway between the 101 interchange all the way up to king street by the ballpark in the south of market neighborhood. Ktvus amber lee is there tonight to explain why the freeway will be shut down and why it will be different when it reopens. Im actually standing on 280 northbound but ive got to tell you, feels pretty strange because normally traffic would be moving through here. And i want to show you what else is going on. Behind me you see those bright lights. Construction crews just started work and im going to have the camera move over to the right and thats 280 southbound which will remain open to traffic throughout this weekend. As you can see, cars are moving along smoothly. Reporter shortly before 9 00 tonight, Highway Patrol officers began diverting traffic at onramps and off ramps to start the fourday closure. Chp tells me there will be an officer stationed at each ramp to make sure no one gets on to 280 north through the weekend. Its going to be a real big pain in the butt. Reporter cal trans is closing 280 northbound to replace sections of the road that were built in 1964. The first place of the bridge hinge replacement project took place over memorial day weekend. This is the before picture. Over on the other side, thats the southbound freeway. Thats the one we did during memorial day. Thats the after. You can see thats the finished product over there. Reporter cal trans crews will jackhammer the existing roadway and replace it with a new one. The work is necessary, Officials Say, because the road is worn from decades of use from about 130,000 motorists each day. This weekends closure is expected to put more drivers on city streets in highway 101, likely to cause congestion. I expect it to be like ridiculous and probably take twice as long as usual. Reporter several drivers who live in the south of market area told me theyre going to either try to leave work early or stay late to avoid the evening commute. Got to hope for the best. Reporter this driver says the closure is definitely an inconvenience, since she drives for a ride sharing service. But she understands why. Ive been dreading this next week for sure. But you know, i would much rather have them replace those hinges than one day fall through that bridge. [ laughter ] right now youre looking at a live picture of the construction work that is underway. Cal trans expects to have 280 north open by 5 00 monday morning. Its urging people to take public transit. If you have to drive, expect at least a onehour delay. Reporting live on 280 northbound in San Francisco, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news.
