The fire moved unpredictable. The wind not having a direction the whole time has made runs in different directions. The focus for calfire is saving lives in the path of a fire. Dennis pratt and patricia holcumb could not get home. Ive lost a home before, i dont want to go through it again. Reporter firefighters were in place defending their homes and pets left alone. I want to get to my animals. I want to get to my babies. Reporter calfire says this fire has not burned for some time. And several buildings were burned down, firefighters believe those buildings were outbuildings. The winds today were not very strong. Calfire says this was a drought driven fire. Neighbors of the victim are outraged after learning an elderly woman was the victim of a sexual assault. Earlier today one teenager was take into custody but another suspect is still at large. Reporter a 16yearold suspect was being held here at Juvenile Hall while the search comets continues for a second attacker. The young suspects were armed with a gun when they broke into the home and tied upd the tied up the couple. This morning, neighbors cannot believe something so horrible could happen to the elderly couple. I cannot believe Something Like that would happen to someone so sweet. Reporter at some point the 85 female was sexually assaulted. Reporter the suspect stole the couples chevy suv and after being chased by police crashed into a home. The driver described as latino between the ages of 17 and 25 with a possible severe larceny laceration injury. They dont touch little children and they dont touch elderly people. Police officer mehserle of civil Rights Violations for the killing of oscar grant. The jury rejected a claim by oscar grants father seeking financial damages for his sons death. Jurors concluded the father did not have a close relationship with his son. Grants father has been in prison for murder for his sons entire life. But family members say the jury did not understand how a father could be involved in his childrens lives. The attorney for the elder grant says hes considering an appeal. Mehserle reportedly started crying when the verdict was read. The family of bryan stow says theyre tired but optimistic as they wait for a jury to decide his case. Jurors must decide if the dodgers former owner was negligent and if a lack of Adequate Security contributed to the attack. The stow family is asking for 37 million to cover a lifetime of medical bills. Stows mother talked about their options if they dont receive damages. If kids do not have access to quality teachers, they do not have access to rigorous curriculum, they do not have a safe environment, everything we look to build on top of that foundation that Weak Foundation will crumble. Joining us now is officer burnett. Can you tell us the latest on whats happening. Reporter this evening the fire continues to burn. We are making progress this evening though the fire continues to grow. 30 of it is contained now throughout the evening we have bulldozers and crews building a containment line around this fire. What about structures. Earlier we were talking about five structures and youre still looking into what that is now. It does look like most of those were outbuildings, sheds stuff like that. We were talking earlier about the wind out here. They were shifting making it unpredictable where the fire was going to go with these canyons and hills. But the wind were not that strong. Explain to me why that factors into a fire that grew so quickly. Normally when we would have a fire like this at such an explosive rate this fire grew because of the dry conditions. Were expecting conditions right now that we would typically see in late summer, even early fall. And thats what allowed this fire to grow so quickly and was allowing it to continue to grow this evening. Daniel, thank you very much. Obviously calfire will be out here all night. Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked two separate fires in san jose. Those two fires started miles apart. One woman told ktvu she saw a young man running from the scene of one fire just after it started. But so far fire investigators havent said if they believe either fire was intentionally set. The Ventura County coroner says a missing firefighter found dead in the Los Padres National forest had fallen off a cliff. The coroner determined mike herdman died of blunt force trauma. He reportedly was camping three weeks ago when he ran off in the middle of the night chasing his dog. His body was found last friday less than a mile from his camp site. The dog was found a week into the search. Theres a story we told you about last night it involves an abandoned building. And for the second night in a row police were out there removing squatters. Our crews found officers ordering people out of the former Navy Building about 8 30 this morning. Two of them were later arrested. Earlier a man leaving the building told us that as many as 30 people live inside. He said some had no other place to go. But he says others are criminals. Itsed bad. Definitely bad. Its evil. Theres every drug addict, alcoholic, criminal. The worse are coming just to stay there. Because they know they can. Police say the inside of the building is filled with trash, dirty needles, fee sees and other hazards and that its been like that for years. Neighbors say they want the building torn down. Reporter jackie suffered a fractured wrist. Police are investigating the crime as a hate crime. There were 27 hate crimes reported in San Francisco last year. Of that 13 almost half were anti gay. Officers say he was using a 15 yearold boy as a runner who would retrieve the fireworks from the storage space.
