We understand they held a special ceremony for kevin san. News media not allowed in the school but students say its a different type of mood today considering now we know who the main suspect is. This is 58yearold jennie zhu, the woman accused by police of traveling at a high rate of speed for several blocks. They say close to 80 Miles Per Hour before she crashed her silver mercedes into a mini van that killed 16yearold kevin san and injured his mother and sister along with three others in another car in San Francisco. We have not been able to confirm she was we have been able to confirm she was taken into custody on bail after the incident but posted bail, was released on saturday. 11 00 a. M. We did stop by her house but nobody answered the door. Neighbors say they barely knew her. Its not clear when her arraignment will be but she faces vehicular manslaughter charges. Police also say she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when she crashed. Lots of Unanswered Questions on why she allegedly traveled fast. Meantime students at lincoln high say the whole incident is surreal. Kevin is completely innocent. You kind of just hope for Something Like he provoked something but he is completely innocent. It just makes you feel a lot more angry about her killing him. Reporter when students arrived at school many were met with several grief counselors prepared to meet with affected students. Students set up a glass case memorial next to the Administration Office which shows his picture, even displaying his uniform and drum set he used as a member of the schools junior rotc. His unit also held a special ceremony for him this morning. Meantime people continue to stop by, leave flowers and messages for a well liked student, friend and classmate i could easily tell seeing from all the faces theres actually a shrine next to the building that dedicates it to him. We understand this afternoon that his mother remains in Critical Condition this afternoon. His sister was released with non lifethreatening injuries. The former Homeland Security secretary will have an office in downtown oakland. Her selection as uc president was criticized by some because of her lack of academic background. But supporters say with the recent cutbacks in government funding napolitanos political experience will be useful. Shell be paid 571,000 a year and that is about three times what she made as a member of the president s cabinet. The clock is ticking toward another possible bart strike. The acting assistant police chief in oakland told me today right now they just dont have enough investigators focusing on robberies. Holdups are the hot crime in oakland now. So far this year there have been 3800 robberies in this city, a 24 jump from this time last year. During all of 2012 oakland had the highest per capita robbery rate in the country. Reporter this was the scene this morning at Oakland Police headquarters as the mayor spoke to a class of 57 Police Recruits on their first day of the academy. This is a highly qualified Diverse Group of cadets. There are seven women, 14 spanish speakers. The acting assistant chief talked to me about how the recruits can help slow the rise in robberies in this city. A trend he calls unacceptable. The increase is not something were pleased with. A lot of that has to do with just staffing in terms of when we the investigation capabilities, that kind of thing. That is why these academies are so important for us. So we can continue to build those out. Reporter even though robberies are on the increase in this city crime overall is essentially flat here in oakland. 36 new officers agreed from the cad graduated from the academy just a week ago but the department is still severely understaffed with just 646 sworn officers right now. That group of recruits that started their academy this morning will be graduating about six months from now and then theyll hit the streets for field training. They got a call about 8 45 to the home on 12th avenue between international boulevard and east 18th. Firefighters say the street was filled with thick smoke. Someone directed them to a laundry room at the back of the house. Residents fought the fire there with a garden hose but eventually had to call 911. It took firefighters 20 minutes to put the fire out. They estimate the damage at 50,000. Police are working to get a description of the suspect that killed a teenager in vallejo. The 18yearold died in the doorway of an apartment after 7 00 last nights. A neighbor said the victim was shot through the neck in the parking lot of an apartment complex on santa clara street near tennessee street. He described hearing several gunshots one after the other. They just shooting up the apartment and bulletholes upstairs. Down here he ended up getting shot. That neighbor was lucky he was not hit. The barbecue grill in front of the apartment ended up taking a bullet headed for his window. The homicide was vallejos 18th this year. Pleasant hill may become the latest California City to impose tough new restrictions on guns and ammunition sales. The city council is set to consider an ordinance requiring a Police Permit for gun dealers. Under that same proposal gun store workers would have to pass a criminal background check. And gun stores would not be allowed to open near schools, parks or day care centers. Supporters say the ordinance would make Pleasant Hill safer. I knew there were a number of counselors relieved of their positions. Reporter the report found that one out of every five Elementary School children in california were reported to be truant in the 2011 to 2012 school year. A student is considered truant if they are absent or tardy by more than 30 minutes without a valid excuse three times a school year. Contra costa county had a truancy rate of 29 while almeida county in San Francisco were close behind, 23 . Last month we showed you a special unit of officers in san jose dedicated to catching students skipping school. Police say they were finding truant kids were committing burglaries. Once these students are involved in the criminal Justice System its hard to get out. I think truancy is just a precursor sometimes for many students before they in fact endum in that system. We want to avoid that.
