Good evening. Im john sasaki. Ken and heather are off tonight. An east bay family is starting the new year without a home after their Christmas Tree went up in flames. Ktvus Christina Rendon is live in the newsroom with more on the moment a 6yearold boy noticed something was wrong. Reporter well, the mother we spoke with says two of her three children were home, when one of them, a 6yearold, smelled smoke. He immediately found his older sister and the two ran for help. All of the things that made this antioch house are home are either salvaged in the driveway or in a pile in the front yard. The mother of three didnt think she would lose nearly everything when she left for work this morning. I really dont know what to say. Im at a loss for words right now. Reporter her son jeremiah smelled smoke coming from the Christmas Tree and he and his sister ran for help. When me and my sister looked back at the Christmas Tree, in the middle it was fire. Reporter contra costa firefighters got a handle on the flames. They say the fire quickly spread from the tree to the living room and into the attic, gutting the entire house. Its a good reminder this time of the year when Christmas Trees are drying out, get them out of the house quickly. Late holiday season, a lot of fires are started that way. Reporter grant says she was just hours away from getting the rid of the Christmas Tree. Neighbors are now coming to the familys aid. I had my friends bring food to the little kids. If it was us, we would greatly appreciate all the help. Reporter jeremiah was able to save one of his christmas presents. My ds. Reporter and a picture of grants daughter as a baby brought a smile to her face. What a memory. Reporter shes grateful her children made it out alive, but wishes she and her family had a place to call home tonight. Everything i got, everything i worked and toiled for is gone. Gone. The red cross is helping the family with basic necessities, but the family says they need much more help. They were renters of that home and its unclear if they had insurance. A 14yearold boy is recovering tonight after he survived what may have been a heart attack. Witnesses at the Jewish Community center say the teen collapsed when he was playing basketball. A nurse and retired firefighter jumped into action, calling for a defibrillator, or aed. The nurse said hes not breathing, i dont know if were getting a heartbeat. We started giving cpr and i ran out here. She said do we have an aed . I ran out here with pat clarkson and he said here it s he threw it over to me. I ran it back in, opened it up, put the aed on and that was a lifesaver. The boy was taken to the hospital where he is under observation tonight. The defibrillator was placed at the Community Center by the darius jones foundation. Jones was a 15yearold pittsburg boy who died of cardiac arrest dying what he loved best, playing basketball. This time next week, the Golden Gate Bridge will close for the first time for construction in its 77year history. Traffic is flowing smoothly across the bridge right now. Private vehicle traffic will close next weekend for three nights and two days. Crews will install a long awaited removable safety barrier. The barrier should prevent head on crashes. Most regular bridge drivers say they are happy about the change. I think its a great idea. You cant argue against it. Inconvenience for two or three days is not a big deal. If it saves lives, its a good thing. During the closure, the bridge will still be open to foot and bicycle traffic. The bridge district says golden gate transit buses will still roll between the city and marin. It was another very busy day at dmvs across california. The department extends its hours for undocumented immigrants who continue to flood in to get drivers licenses. 60 of the states 170 offices are open on saturdays indefinitely. Its the first time saturday service has been offered since 2008, when budget cuts closed the doors on the weekends. The dmv says some 17,000 people applied for licenses on the first day after ab 60 took effect. Under the new law, an applicant needs to show proof of identity, using Something Like a passport and proof of residency, such as utility bills or tax returns. It was another somber day in new york city, as hundreds of people attended the wake of slain officer wenjian liu, one of two Police Officers gunned down two weeks ago in their squad car in brooklyn. His partner, rafael ramos was laid to rest last week. Governor cuomo was on hand two days after the death of his father, mario cuomo. He says his father would have wanted him to be there. Its really a tragic story. They were newlyweds, just had moved into their home, just had started the american dream. His parents were living with them, and just a few months into the marriage, shes now a widow. New york city mayor bill de blasio was greeted with salutes from officers as he entered the wake. Thats a far cry from last week when they turned their backs to him at officer ramos. To an amazing story in kentucky, where a 7yearold girl walked away from a plane crash that killed four members of her family. The small plane went down in the woods last night as it was heading to the familys home state of illinois. After climbing out of the wreckage, the little girl walked almost a mile through the woods to find help. Will carr has more on her incredible story of survival. Reporter a 7yearold girl is out of the hospital after surviving a small plane crash, which killed her parents, sister and cousin. It happened friday night in a rural part of western kentucky. Police say the piper pa34 was flying to mount vernon, illinois from tallahassee, florida when it went down. Somehow, the 7yearold managed to walk away from the wreckage, bloodied, shoeless and crying, walking about a mile through the dark woods to Larry Wilkins house. She said mom and dad are dead, we had a plane crash, and the planes upside down. Reporter wilkins called 911 and tried to clean up the girl the best he could before paramedics arrived. She is a brave little girl. Extremely. Now im praying for her. Shes lost everything, you know, both her parents are gone. Reporter police say the pilot reported engine trouble and then lost contact with air traffic controllers. Investigators from the federal Aviation Administration on the scene saturday getting their first look at the wreckage in the daylight. They are always bad when its a loss of life, especially near the holidays, especially when its a family. Reporter First Responders saying the crash hits close to home. Ive got an 8yearold child myself. When i saw this, it appeared to be 7yearold child that had walked through this dense forest and survived this, its really a miracle. Reporter authorities identified the girls parents and marty and Kimberly Gutzler of illinois. Search crews believe they found wreckage from air asia flight 8501 in the java sea. Sonar equipment detected four massive objects on the ocean floor that appeared to be part of the jets body. Air asia founder Tony Fernandez was among hundreds of mourners attending the funeral of a Flight Attendant who was on that flight. 30 bodies have been recovered as of yesterday morning, including that of an 11year old boy. The uss fort worth has been deployed to help in the recovery effort. The ships commander says the combat ship is ready to help the the indonesian government any way it can. The uss sampson has also been deployed. Both ships are based in san diego. An iconic marin oyster farm is no more. Drakes bay hosted a big party to say goodbye and thank you to all the longtime customers. Reporter hundreds of people came together to say goodbye to an institution. A lot of people will miss it. Reporter the Drakes Bay Oyster Company had been in business for more than 80 years, until the u. S. Parks service ordered the farm to close to help protect the surrounding environment. Oyster farm has been beloved and loved by this community for generations. It was here half a century before this was a National Sea Shore. Reporter it closed its retail and canning operations last summer and the final oysters were pulled from the bay this week. The sea shore promised the oyster farm and the ranchers would stay. This is kind of an undo diagnose of a promise. Reporter some environmental groups supported the decision to remove the farm from the bay, but no one at the party did. I visited with guests that drove from sacramento to be here just to enjoy each others company, the people that truly believed in our local, Sustainable Farming practices out at the drakes farm. Reporter one man had been eating the oysters from the farm for more than 40 years. He says the oysters are good for the bay, which he likes to kayak. Oysters did a good job out there. On the way back, being out there all day, you could pick up a couple dozen oysters and take them home. Reporter the farm owners say they plan to open an oyster restaurant in inverness, but for now those who worked the farm are out of a job. Great sadness. Sadness for the state of california, for our community, for the whole agricultural movement. More gizv any Public Health monitoring in that area, so Officials Say oysters and clams could potentially pose a health threat. Point rays National Sea Shore is working with the Health Department to find a permanent solution. Farm operators say the warning is almost certainly unnecessary because the Water Quality in the bay remains excellent. At a time when gas prices across the country continue to fall, California Gas Prices have ticked up, about 3cents since new years eve. Experts cant agree if its the effect of new cap and trade taxes for producers that started in 2012. Analysts predict state gas prices will rise at least 10 cents a gallon. A behindthescenes look at an overnight stay in an aircraft carrier, a unique opportunity that history buffs can experience just about every weekend on the uss hornet in alameda. Reporter they sleepily made their way to the deck after spending the night on board, to get a taste of what life was like decades ago. Its an exciting adventure for children and adults. Reporter they host the overnight tours just about every weekend. Visitors see parts of the ship most never do at night, including the kitchen and the pilot house, where visitors can check out the equipment and the 180degree view the ships captains enjoyed. Two levels below, these are the sleeping quarters, where overnight guests sleep. Back when the ship was in service, sailors sleeping in the quarters worked in this room next door, called the torpedo workshop. Everybody that lived in that compartment worked on torpedoes, so this was their working space. They lived close to it. Torpedoes were put together, engines manufactured, put together, and then they were stored below us. Reporter history lessons come to life along the way. We have Staff Members that were pilots on here during the 50s and Staff Members that were on other aircraft carriers. Reporter and the ghost stories are a special late night treat. The tight steel spaces arent for the claustrophobic, but 11 yearold patrick got a good nights sleep surrounded by history. The beds were really comfortable and you figure that youre sleeping with ghosts, but they are not really going to hurt you or anything, so its really comfortable to fall asleep. Actually get a feeling of what happened here. The camaraderie between the sailors and the staff, history is being lost, but not being seen. This is you got a museum right here that you can actually be a part of. Reporter bill fee has a personal connection to that aircraft carrier, built in 1941, decommissioned in 1970. I was man of watch, so i commanded the enlisted men on the ship. A Placer County family is in the dog house with county officials because of a recently built deluxe tree house. Mike and pat splinters pride and joy is a 300square foot tree house with full kitchen and bathroom. The granite bay couple already have a full guest cottage on the property and the tree house cost more than 60,000 to design and build. It was on the Animal Planet Network Series tree house masters. The family hasnt commented publicly on the county order. The first meteor shower of the year is starting to peak already. Nasa says you may be able to see the fire balls which produce explosions of light. Look to the north between midnight and dawn for the best viewing. The rate of meteors could be up to 100 per hour. A thick haze covered much of the bay area today. Thats what it looked like this afternoon. You can barely make out the San Francisco skyline from the east bay. The haze shows why there is a spare the air alert today and another alert in effect for tomorrow. That means burning wood in a fireplace, fire pit or stove is illegal. This time of year, typically we have two extremes. Turbulent winter storms that come through the air, and thats whats basically happening right now. Nothing to mix out the layer of haze and as a result, the spare the air alert for tomorrow and it could continue into monday and tuesday of next week because we dont have any strong storms to clean out the atmosphere. This was the scene toward walnut creek at 4 00 this afternoon. You can see all the haze out there across the region. As far as that spare the air alert in place for sunday, take a look at the numbers. You want to keep them low. The numbers for tomorrow, especially in the santa clara valley, they are heading up there in that orange category. That will be the case for tomorrow. Numbers, about the same as today, even heading up a bit in the santa clara valley. Theres a chance that could be extended into monday as well. It was a cold start this morning, wasnt it . We had freeze warnings and frost advisories out there. Take a look at the numbers from the overnight lows. Santa rosa, napa in the upper 20s. San rafael, 34. San francisco, not that extreme chill in the lower 40s. A string of 30s for oakland, concord, san jose as well. Here you can see on live Storm Tracker 2, theres one change offshore. This will be the key change for tomorrow in the morning. Sunday clouds out there. Cold pool of air, chilly for tonight. And look what happens. High pressure returns, bringing in a warming trend beginning tomorrow, but really kicks in for monday and tuesday. By monday and tuesday, especially by tuesday, temperatures could be approaching the upper 60s. Heres our forecast model showing you the clouds tomorrow morning. The clouds begin to thin out for the afternoon hours. Temperatures tomorrow will be warmer than today. Well bump them up into the mid to upper 50s. Look at this, approaching the lower 60s for san jose and morgan hill. Looking ahead at the fiveday forecast, we could definitely use the rainfall. John, i know youre a big skier. Not happening in this fiveday forecast. Maybe a few scattered showers on thursday, but nothing major out there. No strongs showing up on the horizon. Still we could use it for sure.
