A 6yearold boy on a hike with his family attacked from behind by a Mountain Lion. Were told that little boy was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center after being attacked around 1 00 this afternoon. We have more on this developing news, live at the scene on mont bellow road. Any word tonight on the boys condition . Reporter were told the boy is expected to survive. He was conscious when he left. He did suffer cuts on his neck from the attack. You can see behind me, the trail is still closed. We just learned that dogs from the department of fish and wildlife have arrived. A fish and wildlife deputies, park rangers, theyre all pulling their efforts to find this Mountain Lion. We saw a small child about the age of 6 on a gurney and they were wrapping his head. The man came down the trail carrying his son and it looked like he had a laceration on the back of his neck. He was bleeding pretty heavily all over. Park visitors say they were in shock after learning a little boy was attacked out of nowhere by a mown dan lion. You dont hear it very often. Its kind of a rare thing in the middle of the day like that. Park rangers say around 1 00 the boys parents called 911 alerting authorities of the attack that happened about a mile away from the hiking trail entrance. Officials say the Mountain Lion approached the boy from behind as he was hiking with his parents and another sibling. That Mountain Lion launched on to the boys neck dragging the boy into the brush. The cat did make contact with the boy. Did end up taking him into a brushy area. His parents did fight the animal off and the boys in the hospital right now. Authorities are calling it an isolated incident and arent sure what provoked the attack. They say its not in their nature. Mountain lions sightings arent unusual in county parks, municipal parks, state parks. But an attack is extremely rare. We have basically a federal trapper going to be en route and we are basically going toned up going from there. California fish and wildlife would not say what techniques they would use to catch the lion or what they would do after. Only saying that they are taking proactive measures to make sure the animal doesnt continue to be a problem. We were in the mountains, were in their territory. And you know, sadly a small child could be their prey. Reporter i want to mention a nearby special needs camp has been put on lockdown. No kids are at the camp but ten people who work there are told to stay indoors. California department of fish and wildlife say they will be here until that Mountain Lion is caught or until its no longer considered a danger. Ill have another update at 6 30. The little boy is back home safe and sound after missing for 17 hours. His older sister was too emotional to appear on camera but wanted to express gratitude. At 4 00 this morning little sergio wandered in startled and lost. It took us a little while to locate this location but one of the homeless folks came out from the encampment and flagged us down on the roadway. Reporter the man who found the little boy said he and his wife heard noises outside their tent, went to check things out and came facetoface with the 6yearold completely naked and shivering. They had wrapped him up in a blanket, given him food and water and it was our boy. Reporter hes autistic and cannot communicate. He was reported missing 11 00 yesterday morning after his mother found the garage door of their home open and the child gone. His home is several miles away from here and Police Believe the child spent the entire night wandering through these hills alone and barefoot. I wanted the police to keep looking into it. Reporter sergios sister says the family has questions about that story. We didnt see anything major where he had any signs of, you know, him walking up in the hill. That hill is not great to walk in. Hardly any scratches. A little bit of dirt on his feet. Reporter but San Jose Police say it appears no foul play was involved in sergios disappearance and hospital officials told the family the child showed no signs of being abused in any way. Its a threeday emergency drill in napa this weekend for people who help find and rescue people in trouble. Today is the last day of the search and rescue exercise to exchange skills and information. This year its being held at skyline wilderness park. 300 people from 38 different agencies are attending and most volunteers. The event is important to give these volunteers the training they need, organizers say. We try to expose them to things, whether its technology or situations during this event that they might only see once or twice. Developing news, firefighters are gaining ground on a wildfire on highway 49 near Yosemite National park. The bridge fire burned 300 acres and is threatening 700 homes. Firefighters say they have the fire 65 contained. And that most of the mandatory evacuations have been lifted. The fire is started on friday. There was no word yet on a possible cause. Another fire inside Yosemite National park is prompting trail closures and evacuations. The National Weather service tweeted this picture of the metal fire in the Yosemite Valley area. Another picture shows hikers on top of half dome waiting for evacuation. Friedman says her daughter is the one who took this picture. The fire has grown to 400 acres. With the fire danger well be going up later in the period, but basically any day through this month, especially into october, fire danger will be a big concern. State fish and wildlife wardens are searching right now for a Mountain Lion that attacked a 6 yearold boy as he was hiking with his family on a trail. Reporter well, i just spoke with the department of fish and wildlife and they told me they collected the boys clothing, including a tshirt, and they plan to test the clothing to get a profile of the cat. Also the animal will be euthanized and tested for rabies if caught. As you see behind me, the trail is still closed. Roughly five hours after this attack happened. Were told it happened a mile away from the entrance. Search dogs are out there now. Deputies, fish and wildlife and park rangers are all working together to try and find this Mountain Lion. A santa clara park rangers tell us around 1 00 this afternoon, the boys parents called 911 alerting authorities of the attack. It happened a mile away from the hiking trail entrance. Authorities tell us the Mountain Lion attacked the boy from behind as he was hiking with his family. The Mountain Lion latched on to the boys neck and dragged him into the brush. The parents then fought off the animal. Julie was about to go hiking until she saw the boy on a gurney. We come up here hiking all the time. It was very scary to think that a Mountain Lion attack could happen. Im sure its not very common, but even once is too many times. Reporter were told the boy is expected to survive. Authorities are calling it an isolated incident and arent sure what provoked the attack. They say Mountain Lions are often seen crossing the trails ahead of people but an attack is rare. Apparently 16 attacks have happened since 1890 in california. So it is very rare. California fish and wildlife plan to be here to try and find this cat and they also plan to be here to make sure that it is not dangerous. Live in cooper, ktvu channel 2 news. Drivers heading into San Francisco came to a complete stop after multiple accidents on the bay bridge. That backtoback crash, in fact crashes, happened around 9 40 this morning west of the tunnel. Take a look. This is the stand still that was created the toll plaza about an hour after the collision. As you look at this picture, it looks more like a weekday commute than sunday morning traffic. Were total of three separate accidents involving nine vehicles. Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A man is dead after being hit by two cars last night in livermore. The man who has not yet been identified was hit in the eastbound lanes of i580 around 9 40 p. M. Both drivers are cooperating with investigators and no arrests have been made. The Highway Patrol is investigating whether the man jumped off the lose los colinas overpass. A 2yearold survived an accident with a drunk driver. Investigators say a 47yearold woman was walking with a 20 yearold friend and her children, ages 4 and 2, when a white bmw veered off the road and struck them. Both women died at the scene. Medics tried to revive the boy, but he was declared dead a short time later at the hospital. The 2yearold was not injured. The only thing that he wants is justice. Thats it. Investigators say the car came to a stop after plowing into this home. The two people inside the car ran away from the scene. One was chased and caught by bystanders. The other was followed to a residence and later arrested. Happening now, local First Responders are undergoing an emergency drill to help prepare for future incidents. Its all part of the urban shield conference. This Emergency Training comes with an awful lot of controversy. Some people in the Community Say that the type of training is unnecessary. Tonight we spoke with an initial who tells us it is important for crews to be prepared to take on anything. Live at oakland with more on this drill. Christina . Reporter what you see behind me is a command center for a hazmat unit. If you take a look they just wrapped up their mission about ten minutes ago. A theme for these training scenarios centers around mock scenarios involving weapons of mass destruction. Less than an hour ago this crew suited up from the hazmat unit to enter the old tower here at the oakland airport. Their training involved responding to a report of weapons of mass Destruction Lab inside that old tower. Again, this was just a mock scenario, one of many that have been carried out throughout this weekend for hazmat crews, fire crews and even urban search and rescue crews also doing their own training. Were told these types of mock scenarios allows these agencies to come together to train in an environment that theyve never been before. Were also told that carrying out these exercises is crucial because basically if theres any type of disaster or emergency in the bay area, theyre going to be prepared for it. So whether its a wild land fire or an earthquake, or a plane crash, we really are one big response mechanism. And its our job to come and sort out whatever their problem is. And thats why these crews say these types of trainings are absolutely necessary because the Public Benefits greatly from them. It basically improved their Response Time to any type of emergency or disaster scenario. Again there is controversy around this urban shield conference on friday. There was a protest in downtown oakland surrounding the military tarrization of police. While wildlife officials captured a 6yearold female bear in carson city on thursday, this same bear was caught in 2008 in the Little Valley area. This type of behavior is pretty normal when with its is in short supply, officials say. Shes just a drought bear coming down this time of year, looking for apples and things at that urban area, not really causing any problems, just being a bear. Wildlife officials put a gps satellite on that bear and released her back into the wild just yesterday. We dont like to see more rain but were probably six, eight weeks away from any significant rain . Thats typically the average time of each year with the rainfall. Last year i remember late september we actually had rain. Anything can happen with our weather so well keep an eye on it. Nothing showing up in our forecast just yet. Fairly quiet. We go the other direction with warming numbers. We are tracking rain here in the bay area but down towards Southern California, down towards san diego county, you can see approaching parts of the southeastern portions of the state as well. Thank you, mark. A deadly snake that was captured in a Los Angeles Neighborhood is settling into its new home at the San Diego Zoo. The allwhite cobra will spend 90 days in quarantine before it joins the cobra exhibit at the zoo. It was caught last friday in the Thousand Oaks area after it bit a dog. The dog was pretty quickly because cobra venom can kill in about an hour and the dog did survive. The cobra will provide a good educational lesson about the danger of having poisonous snakes as pets. You have to have special permits to have these snakes. Not a good idea to have them as pets, because how would you get the antivenom, how would you protect your children and keep your neighbors safe . The snake was brought to the San Diego Zoo because its one of a few u. S. Zoos with the correct antivenom. Not exactly sure i would describe it as pretty. Its a lovely snake.
