The people injured had to be taken to helmets out of the area, uc davis burn unit, Mercy Hospital and shasta Medical Center, glenn Medical Center, orrville hospital. The community of orland is coming together care for the students. Those who had minor injuries were taken to a red cross shelter. Volunteers were up all night with the students and staying with them till their parents arrived today. This morning so we have little new information. What i can tell you is that we know on april 10, 2014, 5 40 p. M. In orland california a fedex truck with two semi trailers southbound on i5, it left the southbound lanes and crossed a 60foot median. It struck a motor coach traveling north bound on i5. The impact stopped the forrered motion of the motor coach and Forward Motion of the motor coach and both vehicles directed off the highway. A fire ensured. The motor coach was carrying High School Students and they were traveling to Humboldt State university. There has been a lot of discussion about the fact it was part of a convoy of three us buses. Three buses. The other buses already arrived at Humboldt State university. There are a number of fatalities and injuries that occurred in this crash. The ntsb does not determine the cause or manner of fatalities or injuries. To get more information about this let me direct you to information related to fatealties, the fatalities, the Humboldt State University Police chief, and family assistance and support is being provided by the american red cross. The ntsb has a go team here investigating this accident. The investigator in charge has 22 years of experience. And his teams will be examining six different areas. They include highway features and design. Human performance. The two motor carriers, survival factors, the vehicle. And fire safety. In addition to the investigators here on scene we also have family assistance specials, they are here to provide support to the family members and we have a group from Public Affairs from the ntsb. The ntsb mission is to determine why the crash happened. Not just about the what but the why, the why allows us to issue safety recommendations to prevent these crashes from happening in the future. M. Dozens of High School Students about to realize their dreams of College Tonight mourning five classmates killed and many more injured in a Northern California bus crash. We heard from federal investigators and thought anywhere assessment as to what got their assessment as towhat they are hoping to learn to what they are hoping to learn. The big rig crashed into the tour bus. 10 people were killed. 5 students and 5 adults. Ktvus julie haener is here with late information. Reporter the ntsb wrapped up a News Conference 10 minutes ago as a team of investigators begins piecing together the cause of the accident. They said it is too soon to speculate on a cause but offered new details about the crash. The fedex truck was hauling two trailers south on i5 when it crassed the median. It hit crossed the median, it hit the bus and both caught fire. The bus was one of three charter buses carrying High School Students from los angeles to visit Humboldt State university. The other two buses already arrived at the campus. The ntsb said investigators will look for witness information as well as hard evidence from the scene. We will be looking for an electronic control module that might exist, for example in the bus. That could give us information about speed, rpm. At this point we dont know if it is there. They issued the following statement saying our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the tragic accident. We are cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate. The fedex fleet is large, safety records show the Memphis Company had 429 crashes nationwide. 9 were deadly. Records show fedex had more than 1200 violations. Most of those, 900, were over vehicle maintenance issues. The bus company are addressing the crash on their web suit. The Statement Reads our top priority is making sure that the injurered being cared for injured are being cared for. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the accident.
