M. Months behind schedule, the road blocks slowing down demolition crews ready to tear down the old bay bridge. A delay of permits led to a 5 month set back. Ktvus tom vacar joins us now live with how caltrans shifted resources to make up some time. While there was a start date to the demolition there was never a drop dead date. Nearly a range from 3 to 5 years from now. Reporter according to the latest schedule demolition is now 5 months behind schedule and 5 million over budget. That is because caltrans worried major earthquake could collapse the old bridge. Project staff made the skies focus on getting traffic on to the safe bridge. The staff shift delayed the permitting process so the bike path will open summer of next year. The real worry the tower span could be damaged in a major quake. Looking to make up the time. Reporter the 5 million delay cost is within the existing bay bridge project budget. Engineers will tell you in any major product there is no set ending date. It is just too complicated. It is just an edgeicating educating guess. Reporter the original plan was to open westbound next labor day and eastbound six months later but they sped up construction so both could open on labor bay, otherwise we would still be waiting on the old eastbound lanes waiting for the new ones to open up next month. They approved funding in october 2001. At the time caltrans estimated the cost 1. 3 billion. Construction began january 2002. By then the estimate was 2. 6 billion. The bridge opened on labor day weekend. The cost ballooned to 6. 4 billion. The company accused of ordering the wrong bolts for the bridge is disputing information just released by lawmakers. The Company Issued a statement saying it did not provide the bolts for the project. That is despite a report commissioned that claims the company supplied 250,000 bolts that were the wrong size. That same company also provided bolts for the new bay bridge that developed cracks after being tightened down. Crews working on the b. A. R. T. Extension broke a natural gas line around 8 30 a. M. This morning in san jose. People say they could smell the gas. The Fire Department evacuated two homes and issued a shelter in place order. It is always dangerous. Needs a spark or a reason to ignite. As far as moving folks out, it was for precaution. Crews had to dig an access hole to cap the gas line. Charges were filed today against one of the Twin Brothers accused of stabbing a man to death in san jose. Officials say both duc tong and anh tong remain behind bars tonight. This afternoon only duc tong appeared in court. He and his brother were arrested for the stabbing death of richard phan. All three were at a party in san jose when duc tong used a knife to kill him. Today we filed charges against duc tong, murder charges. What happened to his brother . I cant comment on that right now. The investigation ongoing. All i can say is we filed against duc tong. Duc tong is due in court monday morning to enter a plea. Too dogs two dogs attack two men in golden gate park. Police had no choice to shoot one of them. She was with a group of Homeless People and she had wandered over to an encampment and found a friend of the owners. Reporter they had two previous Peaceful Encounters with them. The dogs were imponded in december after being found inside a towed rv. The owner was arrested and the dogs were stray, roaming and brought in.
