The jury deliberated for six hour aepbs they found naso guilty of the deaths hours and they found naso guilty of the deaths of six women. One family of a victim spoke out about the verdict. Eric rasmussen has the story. Reporter he said he did not feel the relief he thought he would feel when he heard the world guilty. A jury found joseph naso guilty on all four counts of murder that he was charged with. Now there were no cameras allowed in the courtroom this afternoon for the verdict. But i can tell you the 79year old naso was wearing the same suit and tie weve seen him in during this trial. As you said the jury took about 51 2 hours over two days to find naso guilty of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. The former freelance photographer defended himself in court. Just a couple of hours ago the brother of one victim roxanne rogash who was found strangled in marin had a final request for his sisters killer. I just wanted him to give the location of the victims out there. Theres dozens of them. This man has not stopped killing. Theres a lot of families that want closure. Reporter prosecutors explained how naso targeted young prostitutes in northern california. He was finally caught after a routine probation check of his home in reno in 2010. It turned up photographs of dead or unconscious women and a list of 10 unknown women. The judge did not speak out. Joseph naso does face the death penalty. Eric rasmussen. You can go to ktvu. Com to learn more about the naso trial. Stinson beach is closed to all swimmers after a great white shark was spotted. Its the same beach where a whale washed ashore just recently. David stevenson is live. Reporter life guards are trying to keep people from getting their feet wet. It took more than overcast skies and showers to keep people away. I think it makes sense, its a bummer but its for our safety. Reporter the 10 to 15foot shark was spotted monday afternoon by a fishing boat and life guards who quickly cleared the water and the beach. At one point Park Service Officials say the shark came within 50 feet of the shore. Life guards are telling folks to avoid even getting their ankles wet. They told us, my grandson and i to stay completely out of the water. Because it tends to, everybody else just goes a little bit further and further as they see people getting into the water. Reporter the sighting coming after a whale was seen near by. Blood and oil from the whale may have attracted the great white. Steinson has always been known for some shark sightings, but weve never had anything like this. Reporter the band is a disappointment for tourists and locals hoping to make the most of their remaining summer vacation. I was pretty disappointed because i wanted to go out and surf. Its the last day of vacation before school started. The National Park service says surfers, two surfers were bitten by sharks in steinton beach in 1998 and 2002. There have been a number of shark encounters in recent years in northern california. On august 6th, a shark was spotted right off of chrissy field. It could have been a great shark but was probably a salmon shark. In june a great white shark bumped and bit a fishermans kayak in pacifica. A surfer in a competition off ocean beach spotted a shark. And in october of 2011, a shark survived a shark attack. Police in the east bay are looking for two violent men. Theyre wanted for beating a pittsburg mother during a home invasion. The two men forced open a second story window. They confronted the woman and demanded money. The children stayed in their rooms. The woman complied with the robbers but tried to press a panic button on her home alert. Thats when the men hit her several times on the face and upper body. It brings about a little fear to me because its a very quiet neighborhood. We all you know working families go and come. And you have to be safe. San jose police are looking into whether a woman was distracted just before a bizarre crash. The woman lost control of her Nissan Altima about 12 30 today. The car literally ran up a tension cable connected to a power pole then slammed into that pole and flipped over. Police say had it not been for the pole, the car may have hit a mother and a child riding a bike right there on the sidewalk. A female driver was very seriously injured this morning when a big rig slammed right into her car. The accident happened about 5 15 this morning on auto mall parkway in fremont. Police say the truck was traveling eastbound when it jumped the center median, hit a white car and slammed into a tree. The cars roof was sheered off. But somehow the woman incredibly managed to protect her head. The road was shut down in both directions for a while with all lanes eventually reopened about six hours later. The man arrested for drunk driving a double decker bus full of tourists in San Franciscos busy union square has pleaded no contest. Police arrested leon maniard last month. He was driving the double decker bus. Maniard had a blood alcohol double the legal limit. 50yearold steven tonabia is facing seven federal charges. He allegedly set up men for drunken driving arrest in exchange for cocaine and an expensive gun. Christopher butler allegedly arranged with tonavi to arrest the estranged husband of his girlfriend. The suspension is for five games, dempster has said he wasnt trying to hit rodriguez on purpose. No word on whether dempster plans to appeal. A deadly shooting at a south bay restaurant shedding light on a growing problem. A lot of these establishments are popping up throughout the city. A bb was found and it was placed in our evidence locker. Either somebody came into my apartment, shot him with a pellet gun. A Sonoma County supervisor arrested last month after allegedly trying to break into a womans home in his underwear is now back at work. In halfmoon bay and pacifica folks were watching as they look out to the west and seeing these massive strikes with cloud cover kind of reflecting the light and making beautiful scenes. As frank points out, a lot of this lightning is offshore which is good. The lightning right now is showing up north of our area. Or not pardon me east of our area from the Sierra Nevada you see it all exploding here. The difference tonight is most of this action is moving in a northnortheasterly direction or northwesterly direction like this. So it looks like its going to clear the bay area as it comes up over the top. So were tracking that. Last night at this time we had a lot of activity come across the body. You see thunder and lightning, or you see lightning strikes any way as you look close in here at the area around south of lake tahoe. See around kirkwood. Youre over there by bear valley. These areas are very aggressive in lightning strikes. Firefighters in this area are definitely concerned for the lightning strikes. Thats why a red flag warning is in effect. Its been dropped for most areas exception portions of the bay area along the napa area as well. So just be aware of lightning strikes. For the next few days because that system is going to be slow to leave. The next chance of rain will be wednesday, tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening. Tomorrow doesnt look like theres much going on out there. Back in the forecast, the extended forecast they clear out and we start to get a break from all of this activity. Theres that red flag warning. These red flag areas continuing until wednesday afternoon. The fog forecast for tomorrow morning, patchy along the coast. Temperatures enough like they were today, a little cooler. A day with lots of 80s along the inland bay valleys and a few 90s. Around the bay lots of 70s. Thats your forecast high for tomorrow. A day a lot like today but tomorrow the clouds want to thicken up. The computer model tomorrow morning i dont see lightning or thunder here. I see the low here, you see things pop up around wednesday afternoon at 4 00. This model says nothing is going to show up our way. Well see how that goes. Police in oklahoma are calling it a thrill killing. An Australian College student was shot and killed for no good reason and the accused teens told police they did it because they were bored. Those three oklahoma teenagers were chargedded today in the killing of the 23yearold university student. The victim was a business major and baseball player who was just out for a jog when he was shot. There were people who saw him stagger across the road. Go to a kneeling position and collapse on the side of the road. Christopher lane was killed on friday along a tranquil road in the town of duncan. Neighbors heard a car speeding away and Police Identified the car from business surveillance video. They arrested the teens a few hours later. Lane was going to graduate in may. He planned to pursue his career as an american citizen. His killing has left the town in shock. And need less to say his family is devastated. Well weve lost something thats just never going to be replaced. And they say it takes a village to raise a kid. Chris was the product of a fantastic village. The suspects are 15, 16 and 17 years old and one of them told police, they wanted to kill someone for the fun of it and they just picked blane at random. They had plans to do it again but were arrested that evening. The 17yearold was driving and was charged as an accessory. Health officials in napa county are confirming tonight the latest case of west nile virus. He was hospitalized but has since recovered and returned home. County vector also confirmed the first dead bird also tested positive for west nile. It was found near calastoga. Vector control officials have plans to fog parts of the san jose on sunday night. Its roughly between beriesta road, North Jackson and noro avenue. That fogging is set to start at 11 00 weather permitting. Mosquito populations across the country have exploded this year. They dont know if the shooter was on foot or in a car but theyre still hopeful a witness will come forward. The restaurant usually opens at 4 00. Not today. Hours after the shooting the owners are still busy cleaning up glass, bottles and blood. There were two or three shots, at first we did not Pay Attention to it. Then a few minutes later we knew it was five shots. Reporter it happened late last night. Bullets riddled the windows hitting people inside. One died from his injuries. From what we can tell early in the investigation they were just patrons inside the restaurant. And somebody shot inside the business from outside. Reporter police do not believe this is gang related. Theyre calling it a random act. However in addition to a homicide investigation, they say they are also referring the case to the vice unit. Those familiar with the restaurant are not surprised. He says he feared Something Like this would happen. This type business, you know it, the crowd that it brings is a pretty bad crowd. Its just, its not uncommon. Developing news now from just west of yosemite National Park where a wildfire has prompted the evacuation of homes and summer camps. The so called rim fire started in the Stanislaus National forest. It has now grown to 10,000 acres. It spread across highway 120 which is now closed at smith station between groveland and the entrance to yosemite. 200 Senior Citizens from the bay area attending a special session at camp mather were evacuated today as a precaution. That camp is run by san jose. Melinda lopez is following the progress of the fire. And she tells us firefighters are dealing with very tough conditions. Reporter these flames are growing. Causing more concern, more evacuations. The fire came right over the top of us. Reporter cecilia fields was evacuated from her bed and breakfast in butte field. You think you have longer. 15 minutes was generous. When we had a fire at 800 acres and in a location, and it goes to 10,000 acres overnight, you cant have containment. You have to look for opportunities for resources to position themselves, so steep its more dozers. Its hand crews and aircraft. Reporter 2,500 homes are threatened in the rim fire near yosemite National Park. Some people have already lost their homes like this one on packered canyon road. My daughter has a home up there. And reportedly her place burned up. Reporter many people are still waiting for information. And some on their way to yosemite were greeted with these road closures. Authorities tweeted photos of the crew members preparing two engines today. Firefighters from hayward and oakland are part of that team. Another fire continues to burn near auburn. Firefighters are warning that the american fire could grow much larger. Started 10 days ago near forest hill in placer county. Since then its burned 15,000 acres destroying three outbuildings. Firefighters estimate it will take another 10 days to contain. The mother of rescued california teen Hannah Anderson died of a head injury and not in a house fire. Firefighters found cristina andersons body after they put out that fire at the home of alleged kidnapper james demaggio. They also found the body of her 8yearold brother. Authorities believe demaggio lured the family to his home so he could kidnap hannah. Hannah was unharmed. A 19yearold man is in Police Custody after allegedly firing shots from an Assault Rifle today at an Elementary School in the atlanta area. Police and teachers evacuated more than 800 students from mcnear Discovery Academy in decatur georgia. The suspect has no ties to the school. The gunman shot half a dozen shots at the school but never got past the front office. In addition to the gun used, he had other weapons. Four state Department Employees have been cleared of security failures following the deadly attack on the benghazi consulate in libya. Connectors requires the shifting of lane barriers. All of this moves faster as the singest most important thing is done. The shims were put in over the weekend successfully. Which mean it is bridge has achieved the level of seismic level necessary to open up over the holiday weekend. Reporter it is fair to say that this is now the strongest most earthquake resistant bridge on earth. Those are only temporary until the permanent fix takes place. The president getting a dog puts the way we get dogs on the national screen. We want to remind people that we have very important issue that is have implications for millions of the dogs. That comment from the president of the humane society. People for the ethical treatment of animals said today that the president should have adopted a rescue dog instead. The white house would only tell us that sunny comes from some where in michigan. I know it was last night but still lots of people talking about the lightning that we saw. The system lies to the south of us and as it does it sets us up with this unsettled pattern. Today we had the instability and chance of a thunderstorms. Tomorrow we have the same chance of a thunderstorm as this low kicks through and brings in a little more energy. Were also going to see fog along the coast as weve been seeing and well see some clouds and daytime highs. A lot like today, lots of 80s. More 80s than low 90s. That means he could potentially get the death penalty. After hearing two months of evidence it took jurors only about a 51 2 hours to reach their verdict. Ktvus Eric Rasmussen was there as deputies led naso out of that courtroom. Eric. Reporter right before that after the verdict the judge gave naso a chance to speak. He said he would save his comments for the penalty phase. In fact, in the last hour or so an attorney, a public defender assisting joseph naso called me after meeting with him in jail this afternoon to say he had no comment for me either. The 79yearold did represent himself in this trial and today the jury sent him a message. It did not believe his argument that he knew some of these victims but did not kill them. Now there were no cameras allowed in the courtroom for todays verdict. It was read a little after 2 00 p. M. Six men and six women found naso guilty on all four counts of murder. Prosecutors say he killed four young women who were prostitutes between 1977 and 1994. Some of the strongest evidence involved 18yearold roxene rogash whos body was found in marin in 1977. Dna on her panty hose was a match for naso. Today rogashs brother says he did not feel the relief he expected to feel when that guilty verdict came down. It will not help until that man is
