There were international initial reports that someone went in to a home on baker street with a gun. One officer said one person was detained. Its not clear if that person is the one who had the gun. Well of course be following the ongoing situation in San Francisco and have much more coming up on the 10 00 news. For the fourth time in just over 24 hours, Bay Area Police have used deadly force on a suspect. The latest happening early this morning. The first officerinvolved shooting occurred at 12 30 yesterday morning in San Francisco with a Daly City Police officer shooting the driver of a stolen car. Later that day in san jose, police opened fire on a man fleeing from officers at about 3 30 in the afternoon. Then in union city, police there killed the suspect at about 10 00 last night. A few hours later, in neighboring hayward, another suspect was shot and killed by police early this morning. Ktvus allie rasmus is live. He started out heading this direction toward us. The car drove through this island here. If you take a look at the pavement you can see some of the scrape marks where the hub cap scraped the concrete. It jumped the curve and crashed in to the post on the corner. Reporter a tow truck hauled an older model honda away from the crash scene. Arthur packman is in jail. The officer responded to a threat. What could have happened differently is the driver could have complied. Reporter at 3 30 this morning Hayward Police say an officer tried to pull over packman for speeding but he didnt stop. We dont know why other than he didnt want to stay and talk to the officer i guess. Reporter police followed the honda to watkins and fletcher lane, a dead end. The car was coming fast. You just hear the tires turningk and then it stopped. Reporter the officer happened to have a civilian doing a ridealong with him. Police say the officer opened fire when the honda accelerated, hitting the car. Packman was hit by the gunfire but his passenger was. I heard pop pop, and then twice more. Reporter with his injured friend still in the passenger seat, packman sped through the intersection of foothill in d street. He crashed, fled on foot, and was caught and arrested. Police say packmans last known address is in oakley. He went to the hospital briefly for some minor injuries but he is now in hayward jai booked on assault with a Deadly Weapon on an officer. Police have not identified the passenger yet. At this point they dont know if the officer died from gunshot wounds, the impact of the crash, or a combination of both. More now on the shooting in union city where Police Say Two of their officers killed an armed suspect. The incident happened last night about 10 00. When officers tried to stop a vehicle on dyer street near meteor way. According to police the driver tried to escape on foot but pulled out a handgun and allegedly opened fire. The suspect died later at a hospital. Well have more details on the story at 5 30. In San Jose Police continue to investigate an officer involved shooting. They killed the suspect after a high speed chase. The 20minute pursuit began yesterday around noon. During the chase the suspect rammed three Police Officers and aimed a gun at officers. Youre looking at part of the chase. When he blew out a tire and had to leave the vehicle, officers say he appeared to be hiding a gun and thats when they opened fire. Neighbors heard the chase. Im glad they caught that stupid guy. He was going to hurt somebody. Then all of the sudden i heard the shots and got the hell out of the way. When youre in vietnam and you hear shots you get out of the way. Police have not released the suspects identity. Authorities say a car full of teenagers crashed in oakland this morning while on the run from highway patrol. It began around 1 00 this morning. They tried to pull over the older model toyota sedan because they suspected the driver was drunk. The car eventually plowed in to a fence at west grand avenue and campbell streets. There were five teenagers in the car. The injuries ranged from minor to serious. Firefighters are investigating a suspicious fire at independence high school. They saw flames burning the extd ing inside. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire in less than an hour. No one was hurt. Investigators are still trying x tent of the damage to the school. A fire last night in campbell displaced an unknown number of senior residents. The fire broke out at about 10 30 p. M. At wesley manner on hamilton avenue. Santa clara county firefighters evacuated those living on the 12th floor. No reports of injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Gilroy Police Arrested a man and are looking for two others in a bar fight stabbing. Officers were called to the long house restaurant on monterey road just before midnight. Thats where they say they found a 36yearold man near the bar with several stab wounds in his back. He was airlifted to a trauma center. They arrested effrain regoso. In San Francisco organizers for the escape from alcatraz triathlon reported today one of the participants died near the swim portion of the race. The race attracted thousands of people to the bay area this morning. It featured an 8mile run, 18mile bike ride, and 1 and a half mile swim from alcatraz. Gomez from spain took first place. The man who died was from austin, texas. He apparently suffered a heart attack as he jumped in to the water. A light earthquake hit today on the Northern California coast. The u. S. Geological survey said the 4. 3 magnitude quake happened just before 10 00 this morning and was centered about 46 miles southwest of eureka. There are no reports of any injuries. New york city, a bmw slammed in to the side of a vehicle that was taking a man and his pregnant wife to the hospital. Following the accident, the two people in a bmw took off on foot. We all thought the dogs had passed on. Reporter witnesses say when firefighters pulled out bella and paris they were lifeless but they quickly began cpr and worked on them for more than an hour. I timed them. It was an hour and 10 minutes ty worked on the dogs. Reporter firefighters who successfully fought the mobile home flames focused their fight to save paris and bella. Neighbors say they almost accepted the dogs had died. Then a small sign of life. Eventually i seen the paw starting to move. They brought them back. I saw them pull them out. Im sorry. Reporter firefh rushed the dogs to a vet where theyre alive but in critical condition. Investigators say theyre looking in to what caused the blaze that nearly took their life. As we mentioned at the top of the newscast, there has been a string of officer involved shootings around the bay area in the last few days. Ken pritchett is gathering information at one of the most shootings in union city that left a man dead. Union city police say this all started last night at the traffic stop here on dyer street and somewhere south of this intersection the traffic stop ended up to a foot chase. Shots were fired. All of this resulted in a suspect dead. Reporter in the traffic lane theres one. Another on the curb. Red dots from a spray paint cab also marked the glass. And the parking lot of this apartment building. These indicated areas of interest to investigators. The only remaining sign of the officer involved shooting near the intersection of dyer street. She heard it happen about 10 00 last night. I was just in my living room watching tv. I heard some shots. I thought they were fire cracks so i ignored it. Reporter when she heard more shots she went upstairs to look out of her window. I saw there was this green colored car with the door open. And behind that there were two police cars. Reporter Union City Police say two of their officers tried to pull the suspect over for a traffic stop and he ran from his car and reached in his waistband and pulled out a gun. Two officers fired at him, fearing for their safety. She only saw the investigation after. A whole lot of policemen searching the grass looking for something. They found a loaded handgun belonging to the suspect whose name and age has not been released. He was hit multiple times by the officers and he died at the hospital. In union city, ken pritchett, ktvu news. In Vallejo Police say around 9 25 officers were called to an apartment on ebbits pass road. When officers ent ered the apartment they found a man and woman dead inside. The relationship is unclear and its unknown if they lived there together. Their names have not yet been released as family is still being notified. The family of a missing High School Student is asking for help to find their son. Ryan, a senior at alhambra high school, was reported missing monday night. Police consider the 18yearold at risk but have not explained why. Ryan is described at 6 feet tall, 165 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call martinez police. Dozens of teaching positions could reportedly be on the chopping block. The school board will consider cutting more than 46 fulltime positions in the annual budget meeting on wednesday. Teachers must be notified about possible layoffs by march 15th. A new state law banning Public School fees is causing a lot of confusion. The law prohibits schools for charging fees for classroom items and activities. Schools are prohibited for requiring students to bring certain materials to class. Schools and teachers are trying to raise money for field trips and school supplies. They say theyre not sure exactly what the law allows. Supporters of the law say it was necessary because charging fees was putting a financial burden on low income families. The finishing touches are being made this evening at a project turning the bay bridge in to a 1. 8mile long massive light show. It could mean big business to the cities.
