My son when he was 16, he is 25 now, he fell off a skateboard and suffered a severe traumatic bring injury. So i really with every tragedy as people know there is often a Silver Lining. And the Silver Lining was that i got to be a mother all over again to him because when he awoke from the, he was like a baby. He couldnt speak or walk. We couldnt even swallow. Instead of approaching him the way i always had which was the supermom fixing it and he had a learning disability so emotional ups and downs. I was always trying to fix it. And now i have a chance to do it over again. Into really look at him for who he is and celebrate what he has and not focus on what he doesnt have. In your home you set for seven months fulltime care. You left the chronicle and when you came back it sounds like you reinvented not only your role as a mother but who you are and how you envisioned the whole experience. I did. When i went back to the chronicle and when you step away from a newsroom because as you know newsrooms are kind of strange a subculture were abnormal stop becomes normal because everybody is doing the same thing and you are working all these hours and under constant stress turning out columns and going to bed at night hoping you got it right. And so i said id need to step back and spend real time with ryan. And help him every step of the way. And by that point i had a contract to write a book. Called the water giver. It was a book about my Second Chance and what i have learned about being a mother.
