Welcome to mornings on 2. It is sunday march 6. Im allie. And im brian flores. Rosemary as our weather this morning. Beautiful right now but changes ahead. Yes we do have another storm on its way in so enjoy the dry whether while we can. Definitely the time to get out doors. Its a cooler start. Well have the numbers in just a moment. Step outside and take a look at the beautiful view. Many of us waking up with sunshine and much needed rain on its way once again as we get into the second part of your sunday. Temperatures in the 50s in areas like santa rosa 54, 55 in San Francisco, mid to upper 50s oakland, low 50s in livermore and san jose checking in at 54. Temperatures rebounding some. Still a little cooler than where we were yesterday but we had more sunshine out there. Lets step back before we step forward. Take a look at these rainfall amounts. One to three inches of rain fell across the area. This is the jack pot, almost six inches of rain fell over the Santa Cruz Mountains. 5. 7inches there. Santa rosa reported more than 2 inches. The wind advisory starts later today about 4 00 ill detail that for you and the Flash Flood Watch, the timing on the system and more on how much we expect coming up in just a little bit. Back to you. Actually the down pours and strong winds have caused damage along the bay area and thats where we have christian live this morning where we have seen Power Outages as well as flooding. How is it going . Rosemary as you were talking about the storm that blew through caused a lot of damage in its wake. Here in lafayette you might be able to see one of the many crews thats out scowerring the bay area looking for spots that need work. This area here we are understanding that this crew is waiting on a crew to actually come in from the city of lafayette to clear the tree down there that brought down this line. Until that tree is really moved theres not a lot of work that they can do until that tree actually gets removed so they are estimating it could be 6 or 7 at night before power is fully restored to this neighborhood. We have video that we shot overnight of what the scene looked like when that tree came down some time after midnight bringing those power lines down leaving a lot of people without power overnight, a lot of people came out to see what was going on. We talked with one woman this morning who says shes been without power for hours. The two vehicles you see there we cant get out. We can pull them out but what good does that do us. Unless they open up an emergency fire road down there, but its blocked off. This is far from the only neighborhood effected. We have a live camera out in san ramon as well where another tree came down and blocked the area where officers escort prisoners in and out much the station and partially blocking some of the access to the patrol cars. No word of any damage at that point and no word on exactly when all of that clean up is going to be done today. Its not hard to find trees down. On my way into work this morning, as a matter of fact i found downed trees on 14th avenue in San Francisco, shot some video of that. So clearly a lot of clean up still under way. Back to our live shot here in lafayette you can see crews escorting people through this area. It is safe but these lines could be energized later on and that would be a serious problem. The word from pge assume they are energized. They could be dangerous and deadly. The crews still working out here. Well have updates throughout the morning on when power will be restored here. Thank you very much. The storm is causing problems on the roads contributing to several crashes yesterday. And on the bay bridge drivers are warned to take it slow because of the high winds. This morning daniel hill joining us on the phone to talk about what drivers should watch out for for today and really for the next few days right daniel . Thats correct. We have a brief today for us to recover, clean up the roads a little bit but yesterday was a pretty big day for us. We had a lot of roadways effected and its going to hit us again as the rain comes back. I was just checking the dispatch log the clean up continues. Just in the last hour branches down on the roadways. Report of erosion on a roadway and summit lake drive. What should drivers be looking out for when they are heading out there when not everything is quite cleaned up yet . We are asking people to take it slow out there. There are situations where you are going to be driving down the road and may not see until you get onto it a downed tree or other debris in the roadway. Tread carefully. A lot of this rain is going to make it difficult for all of our trees to keep standing. The soil is going to get wet. Some of the trees may come down unexpectedly so when it does turn to dark slow down and keep your eyes up to detect the hazards before you come up on them. Talking about that we reported a story about a road block on a flooded road and the driver went around the road block. Obviously people should not be going where a road block is but just from advice from a driver and at night especially is there a way to see if there is a flooded roadway. Is there a way people can know because sometimes its hard to see if theres a big puddle of water out there without any lights. If you cant see it for sure like on the freeway you can see roadway flooding because the road looks different. A lot of people assume its water on the roadway but you never know if thats standing water. The slower you go the more time your brain has to process what you are seeing. Trust your instincts. If you see something that looks wrong it probably is going to be wrong. Slow down. If you hit a patch of water and you hydro plane let off the gas, dont hit the brakes and adjust your driving accordingly. What too many people do is when they hydroplane they hit the brakes and lost control because as soon as your wheels get traction again your car goes directly in the way it was supposed to go. Thats the most cause of crashes out there during the rain time. Officer daniel hill talking about the clean up under way and reminding drivers to take it safe out on the roadways. We still have more storms coming through and the debris is still on the roadway. Thanks daniel appreciate it. Uh huh. Marco rubio had a very, very bad night and personally id call for him to drop out of the race. I think its time he drops out of the race. Every time he comes in third and fourth he says youve got to be able to win and he has not been able to win and i think its time he drops out. I would love to take on ted one on one. That would be so much fun. Trumps two supersaturday victories brings his total to 12 states hes been able to win. Bernie sanders is racking up states in the mid section. Our wish is coming true. We had a nice storm roll through the bay area. We have a second potent storm getting ready to move through the bay area. Enjoy the calm before the storm as we wake up with partly cloudy skies. Just a few sprinkles out there right now. I will pin point this next system and show you what to expect for the rest of the day coming up. Thanks rosemary. From jobs to housing, the growth here is the envy but has it grown too much too quickly. Some question if a bubble is forming. A possible slow down and whats at stake. When you talk about bubbles these kind are fun but thats not the case with an economic bubble burst. [ music ] in 1999 Brittany Spears topped the charts and silicone valley was on the verge of a dot com bust. It was a day of laughish parties and ipos but when that bubble burst silicone valley lost 20of jobs, housing prices dipped 10 . Fast forward to today we are on the verge of another slow down. Well it does remind me of the. Com boom. I cant want to use the word bubble but the valuations got so extreme over the last couple of years that it is bubble like again. Ken rosen the Fisher Center for real estate says unlike 2000 companies have Business Plans and have shown profitability but the problem lies in investors pouring so much money in that some Tech Companies are way over valued and due for a correction. Theyve been dubbed unicorns, private companies valued at 1 billion or more because a few years ago it was rare to have a private Company Valued at that much. Today there are 152 unicorns including uber, air bnb and pintrest. The view asked most investors no bubbles here everything is just fine thank you very much. Can you invest in my start up over here. Steve blank is behind eight start ups and teaches at stanford. The nice part about this bubble is its deflating rather than popping and unlike the bubble at the turn of the century this isnt going to hurt your grandmother in nebraska. So what would a modern bubble burst mean. Rosen says the Housing Market is already softening and expects home prices and rent could drop 15 . I would be surprised to lose 40,000 jobs over the next three years at some point. We are not there yet. I dont think so. Steven levy is the director of the california economy. He says the bay areas economy is strong. Companies like apple are expanding with unemployment lower than almost anywhere in the nation and tourism and airports are setting records and while people are leaving the bay area more people from other areas are moving in. All of the experts thought everybody would leave, the companies would leave, the people would leave. And it hasnt happened. The silicone valley tech analyst has watched the industry for 30 years. Ive heard this story over and over. Silicone valley is dead. We are not going to go anywhere. The body line is they dont understand the fact that part of this is cycle. They also agree a shake out is coming. In the bay area it means at a minimum slower growth. And possibly a down turn in jobs. But when that will happen is very hard to say. Everyone we spoke with agreed the biggest crisis for the bay area is Affordable Housing. I cant tell you how much people i know personally who i work with who are thinking i cant afford to live here. If there is a down turn silicone valley has done well as a recovery and despite housing prices traffic and taxes its still a place where people want to live. In san jose ktvu fox 2 news. Also a wind advisory. Gusts to 50 Miles Per Hour for the entire region a possibility once again and just like last night we could see toppled trees and Power Outages with this next system. Heres a look at when i do expect it to arrive. We will be mainly dry for the first part of your day into sunday afternoon. Mostly cloudy but still on the dry side. Not until 4 or 5 00 it begins to move in. Fox news confirmed she died of connestive heart failure. The website tmz first reported the news. Her and Ronald Reagan were married for more than 50 years. She was first lady from 1981 to 1999 and she was known for her just say no to Drugs Campaign. We are still getting information and will provide another update as soon as we get more information but turning now to our other top stories this morning. Yeah the other top story we were talking about is the severe storms that hit the bay area last night. We are seeing the after effects of the latest el nino storm. We are looking live at a downed tree at the San Ramon Police department the cameraman zooming in there. You see the tree branch that fell there. Just some of the damage we see across the bay area this morning. We can show you a look just before the toll plaza roads a little slick this morning but patchy clouds in the distance, blue skies and sunshine right now but thats going to change later on this evening around sun down when we get the next round of rain. No question about that. This is a live look from our roof camera. The break in the clouds looking very nice on sunday morning. You see a little sun break but this is only the beginning and storms headed our way not just today but this week. Good morning im brian flores. Im allie rasmus. Rosemary has been busy all morning tracking the storms coming through. Yes great to see that rainfall yesterday. Santa cruz picked up almost six inches of rain in 24 hours so thats Pretty Amazing. Also amazing when little ones run to the window to watch it. That was pretty cool. We are going to have those advisories once again later today, flash flood as well as wind. More on those in just a moment. Lets take a look at this view here. We have partly sunny skies, a few scattered showers out there for the first part of your day but for the most part in and out of the sun and the clouds. Its going to be an enjoyable sunday. As we get into the evening hours or the second part of the afternoon the rain is going to come back in full force. Santa rosa 55 degrees. Oakland 58, livermore 55 and san jose 57 degrees. Temperatures not too bad. Cooler than most from where we started yesterday. Emeryville where our viewer caught a rainbow this morning. She caught this outside. A very pretty start to the day. And many of us enjoying a pretty start to the day with a little bit of sunshine out there. Radar very quiet at the moment. The next system is still off shore expected to roll in later today. So we are still on track for that possibility of two to four inches of rainfall by tomorrow morning. Ive already seen one, two, three inches in some areas of the bay area. Well have a look at those numbers in just a bit. Focusing on storm number 2, Flash Flood Watch, rapid rise in our creek and small streams possible. Wind advisory gusts expected once again to 50 Miles Per Hour. These are damaging winds that topple trees, create Power Outages, send your out door furniture flying so that could be aware of as we get into the second part of your sunday. The down pours and strong winds have caused damage all around the bay area. Power outages, flooding. We go to christian captain live on site. A downed tree and wires in lafayette. How is it looking out there . Take a look from a different angle here you can see the top of that utility pole. This tree still down in the middle of the road. No word on exactly when this tree is going to be cleared but it has blocked access. We are at the intersection of quail ridge in lafayette. This road over here closed right now access limited by that downed tree. We have video we shot overnight of what the scene looked like out here. That tree came down after 7 00 last night8 00 last night between 8 and 9 and brought down that utility pole with it and one neighbor says things suddenly went very, very dark. No power overnight. He tells us he actually has his three kids at home and two of their cousins so five children in all in a house with no power, limited heat. He says fortunately they were able to eat last night but he says today is going to be a bit of a challenge and again he still is without power this morning. We also have a live camera one of our photographers there in san ramon this morning at the Police Station where another tree came down and blocked the area where officers escort prisoners in and out of the station and also blocked access to the patrol cars. No word of injury or Severe Damage but likely a lot of clean up and downed trees kind of the watch word this morning. Pretty easy to find downed trees no matter where you go throughout the bay area. On my way in i shot video of a downed tree on 14th avenue in San Francisco. No real damage there. Possibility of some cars possibility scratched when that tree dame down but one of the major problems of course is coming back to our live shot when that tree comes down if it pulls down utility lines thats when the very Serious Problems can happen. Pge crews here on the scene right now working to restore power in this neighborhood. They are saying that could come this afternoon, evening at 6 or 7 00 tonight and again from pge a warning that if you do find downed power lines stay away from them, call the authorities right away. We have been checking periodically with pge since we are standing close to these lines. Right before we went live i asked if the lines were still deenergized and they said yes. Thats why we can stand so close but obviously treat any downed power lines as if they are hot, guys. Always good advice especially after a storm like we had last night and more on the way. Something for people to keep in mind. Thanks christian. The storm has left many people in the dark. This is a look at pges power outage map. As of this morning still more than 4,000 customers are without power across the bay area. Yesterday the storm knocked out power to 38,000 customers bay area wide and the majority were in the peninsula. Pge crews are still working to restore service and joining us this morning is tamar and when we spoke with you about an hour ago last check there were 4,000 people this morning who still were without power. Has the number changed at all . Actually it has we are happy to report we are down to 29 customers in the bay area at this time and continuing to work to restore those customers. Is there a part of the bay area thats been more effected than others . It looks like the north bay at this time has the highest number, pray 900 customers approximately 900 customers in the north bay. And a lot of the power lines that are down came from trees. Is that what you are seeing as well in terms of causes from the Power Outages last night and this morning . It can vary but primarily what we do see are those tree branches due to the wind into our lines but we do try and prevent that all year round with our Vegetation Management crews. They go around and check 134,000 miles of line in our service area and try and trim back any branches that look like they could make contact but when a tree comes down because the roots might be weak or what not thats a hard thing to prevent. And how many additional crews and resources have you brought in this weekend because of the storm . You know, weve had folks from all around coming out to the locations that are going that were going to be hit hardest. We have a Meteorology Team thats constantly tracking the weather. They are also tracking where we can expect outages so that we can setup those crews in the appropriate locations and bring folks from lesser hit areas. Tamar do you have an estimate . 2900 customers with still without power but do you have an estimate when they can have it back on again . In a storm like this especially with another storm on its heels its difficult to say but we are out there in our blue trucks. Youll see us all around working safely and quickly as possible to restore our customers. All right thanks so much. And she mentioned crews will be hard at work right now and are going to be working again tonight with another round of storms on the way. Thanks tamar. Thank you. Well the storm did cause headaches at the airport yesterday. The average delay for an arriving flight saturday evening was two and a half hours. 70 flights were canceled throughout the day. The driver went around a truck that was setting up a blockade when the car was submerged. The driver made it out of the car but the 48yearold woman who was with him did not. She was under water for 15 minutes before crews were able to reach her. The water was six to eight feet deep by the time we were able to get into the vehicle. Took the dive team a while to find it. Cal tran says because there was so much rain many much the drains over flowed sending it back onto the highway. Officials say if you do see road blocks or flooded roads find another way because it doesnt take a lot of water to create a dangerous situation. Weve got good weather. Partly cloudy skies letting just that break sort of sink in before the next round of rain moves in and the next round of rain going to bring advisories once again so a potent storm off shore. You can see by Storm Tracker 2 here we are very quiet at the moment. We do have a mix of sun and clouds out there for the day. Enjoy it. A few scattered showers that will remain in the forecast but into the second part of your day the system moves in and the advisories into place as well. We have a Flash Flood Watch for the entire bay area. We are talking for the evening hours going to lead to the possibility of rapid rises on our extremes as well as creek. We had a good amount of rainfall yesterday. From one to two inches for most of our urban areas and more than that for the hills. But again with that in the bank we will continue again to see more rain and wind and with that the possibility of flooding and a wind advisory. Gusts expected to reach 50 Miles Per Hour as we get into the evening hours. The time reads 4 00 this afternoon all the way until 4 00 tomorrow morning. Very wide spread and wind gusts like last night could bring the possibility of toppled trees as well as Power Outages. Be aware of that. If you are going to the sierra you are going to need chains. They picked up a foot of snow even more in Higher Elevation areas and will continue. Snow levels as expected have dropped. Heres a look at your future cast models. The second part of your day remains mainly dry but the clouds continue to be on the increase. So partly cloudy this morning. Well be mostly cloudy over the second half of your afternoon and then by sunset in some areas sunset right about 6 00 we are going to have the showers. We have north bay first with heavier rain by 5 00 and its going to shift into the central and south bay by 5 or 6 00, 7 00 a heavy front moving through and continuing to see the moderate to heavy down pours. As we get into 8 or 9 00 beginning to trail off scattered showers for most of your sunday evening into your monday morning drive. Rainfall amounts with this next system from half an inch to an inch expected tomorrow morning. Excellent news. Tracking that for you and have to see how it all shakes out in the end. Two to four inches for our urban areas and hills pick up seven inches of rainfall by the end of monday. Giving you a look here at some of the numbers right now. A lot of 50s outside. 56 in San Francisco, 55 in livermore. Low 60s in the forecast for most of us this afternoon. Will be a cool and cloudy day, rain on the increase by late in the afternoon early evening. Theres your extended forecast. Showers in the forecast back to work on monday. We are dry on tuesday. We are dry on wednesday but increasing clouds wednesday night as another storm begins to move into the bay area on thursday. Okay. Talking about the sierra a lot of folks say this could be the best spring skiing we have seen in five years. Right. Could actually last well into spring which is great news. Thats great news. Rosemary thank you so much. Speaking of the sierra covered with several inches even feet of new snow this weekend, which its a welcome sight for skiers. You are excited about it. Im stocked. Its very exciting. We have a look at conditions out in the sierra this morning. Drivers do need to be prepared if they are headed that way. Good morning from a beautiful fresh snowy sierra right now. We are in kingville where just minutes ago we started seeing snow fall just a little bit. As you can see here the roads are pretty clear. Its been quiet the whole drive up here. We started seeing snow around blue canyon the 4700foot elevation so definitely this storm overnight lowered the snow levels for us. We are at king vale here where you can see there are chain controls in effect. If you have a vehicle that does not have four wheel drive on all four tires you will need to have chains from here to seven miles east of truckee so if you are headed out to the sierra get on the roads as soon as you can as you can see the roads are clear and skies were clear as well but that will be changing as the day goes on. This is definitely the time you want to get on the road. Make sure you are also fully gassed up and make sure you are prepared for a little bit of a slow drive. Right now theres not much of a slow down but certainly as the day goes on and people start heading back towards the bay area that is likely to change but right now just enjoy the drive and the beautiful fresh blanket of snow. A lot of people really excited who are heading up to those ski resorts today. That was kristen reporting. Back here in the Bay Area Police in san ramon say wet roads and speeding were factors that happened in that town yesterday afternoon near hart court way. The vehicle veered off the road and hit several trees. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other people inside and the victims name has not been released. San Francisco Police are investigating a homicide that happened just before 7 00 last night at an apartment on harbor road in the bay view district. We talked to police earlier this morning but they are still not releasing any details about what exactly happened. We will bring you more information as soon as it comes into our news room. Berkeley police are investigating another Sexual Assault this weekend near the uc campus. Police say Early Saturday Morning just after midnight a man approached a 21yearold woman from behind while she was walking near dwight way. Investigators say he pushed her to the ground and assaulted her. The suspect is described as latino in his mid 20s early 30s and unshaven. This is the fourth reported Sexual Assault in the South Campus Area this year. Police released this surveillance photo of the man running away from the scene in an earlier Sexual Assault last month and they do believe saturdays incident is linked to the other assaults in the area. Police are hoping Surveillance Video will hope them find four men who pulled off a burglary at a gun store. Investigators say they crashed their 1990 honda accord through the entrance of independence armory on lakeville street at 7 30 saturday morning. The stores cameras as you see there caught the men stealing several guns before they drove off in the honda. The car is described as mostly light green with a white colored driver side door. Hopefully that good Surveillance Video will help lead to tips. And the description of the car. Definitely. Coming up after 18 seasons with the nfl looks like Peyton Manning is hanging it up. Our other big story is el nino making a come back as you heard last night. Go ahead and take a look at the heavy rainfall taking over the bay area last night and this morning causing severe flooding and major crashes all across the region. It wasnt just the rain but strong winds that took down trees across the bay areas as well. Pge was staying that 2900 customers are still without power this morning but there is another round of rain on the way. Both claudine and ross have the day off but dont worry rosemary is very busy. Shes been very quiet this morning, usually very talkative. Shes working hard. Dont get me wrong you are working very hard but you are very quiet over there. We had a nice juicy storm roll through last night and another would not the way and in between sunshine out there this morning and its a beautiful start to your sunday. How about we take a look at whats going on. A nice view of the oakland skyline to start with the first part of your day. Dont be fooled we have rain on the way. We will have wind advisory as well as flash flood and more advisories to come. First lets check in on numbers. 54 degrees right now in santa rosa, 56 San Francisco. 57 in san jose. People are tweeting me this morning areas picking up two inches. San Francisco Oakland one to two inches. Santa cruz mountains five inches. Six inches in the last 24 hours. You can see here on Storm Tracker 2 things have really calmed down. We are going to remain mostly cloudy to partly cloudy mainly dry for the first part of your sunday. Then as we get into 4 or 5 00 things start to change up and we are going to be wet for the rest of the evening. A Flash Flood Watch expected later today. A wind advisory starting at 4. A High Surf Advisory under way. Im going to detail what this means to you. Ill have a look at your numbers and the extended forecast. When the dry weather is going to come back and how long its going to last before the wet weather moves back in. All of that coming up but the down pours and strong winds have caused damage across the bay area. Several reports of Power Outages and flooding. Ktvu is live at the site of the downed tree. How is it going out there . A lot of work still to go. We are at the intersection of quail ridge road in lafayette and you can see this is the top of a utility pole here that came down about 8 or 9 last night and this neighborhood has been without power since that time. Now we have video of what it looked like overnight shortly after that tree came down. It all happened at around 8 00 last night. Neighbors say that theysome neighbors say they heard it, others came home to find that their neighborhood was blacked out. We spoke with one man who is home with his three kids. He also has two of their cousins staying with him so five children in all. He said they just finished dinner. He was thankful they were able to finish dinner when all of a sudden the power went out and hes still without power this morning. Well leave the house and maybe go over to the grandparents in oakland. That sounds like a good option. But i also have a fridge full of food and a freezer so keep that stuff closed and dont open it and hope for the best. But as long as everyone is good and warm and staying dry we are okay. And lafayette not the only neighborhood thats dealing with this power outage. In san ramon a tree came down near the Police Department blocking the area that they transport prisoners in and out of the jail and blocked access to the parking lot there so clearly a lot of work to do in san ramon and these downed trees all over the place. Lets go to video i shot this morning at about 5 this morning over on 14th avenue in San Francisco. That tree came down before 7 00 last night. Again fortunate nobody was injured but some cars may have been scratched or slightly damaged in that incident so clearly a lot of trees down, something we are going to be dealing with as the next round of storms goes through. They are still cleaning up from last nights storms and more storms to come. Coming back to our live look this is a view of that tree that fell down here in lafayette. It came up from the roots, the whole tree down. Pge crews on the scene here. If you take a look we can also see that a tree company just arrived out here starting to work. The first problem of course is clearing this tree from the road after that they can restore power and should be restored at 7 or 8 tonight to this neighborhood. Reporting live, thank you. The storm has already been causing problems all over the roads. The slick conditions contributed to several crashes yesterday including one on interstate 80 in richmond. And on the bay bridge drivers were warned to take it slow because of high winds. Daniel hill talked about what drivers should be on the look out for today and daniel i was just looking at the chp. A lot of the stuff coming in from the dispatch log. Spin outs and trees and debris in the roadway. Those are the things people should look out for. Absolutely. We are lucky to have a little bit of a rest to clear the roads of downed trees power lines and so forth but that time is going to run short as we get back into the storm. We are going to advise motorists to just take it slow. Thats the best advice we can give you. The faster you drive in the rain the more likely you are to be involved in a collision. Daniel i know we harp on this a lot telling motorists drivers if you will to just be careful out there but we have the break in the storms right now. What are we telling drivers right now . Check the tires and wind shield wipers all that good stuff. Those are the best things to do to make sure tires are inflated and wind shield wipers are in order. The vast majority of people maintain the cars and keep them in decent enough shape to drive. People failing to adjust the driving patterns. They drive the same speed they do when its dry and dont increase following distance and over react when they hit standing water. The message is to slow down the only thing you can do to make sure you do not crash in the rain. The last time we talked to you you had good advice on what drivers should do if they hit flooding on the roadway. Keep your eyes up to see anything unusual. Hydroplaning situations come from water standing on the road and those look like dark differences on the surface of the roadway. What we tell drivers to do is if you do experience hydroplaning release your foot off the accelerator. Dont hit the brakes or put any Steering Movement into your car. Let your car get the traction back and then adjust your driving patterns. The most common crash in the rain is azole o spin out where somebody loses control typically after hitting standing water because of trying to hit the brakes or turning the wheel and once you regain track it goes out of control. Thank you so much. My pleasure. Be sure to download the free weather app for the latest on the weather conditions. Search for ktvu in the app store.
