Up call. I was off for the last few days. Im not glued to the news. Nor should you be. One of the first clips i saw was from the Little League world series last night. It stood out. I dont know if you know the story. The game was between venezuela, they defeated the Dominican Republic on a walk off hit. The pitcher so devastated, it collapsed to the ground. The first person to come over to him, not his teammates but the oh points posting coach. Holds him and opposing coach. Holds him and embraces. Opposing players start to come over and embrace him. I went to first soccer game for my daughter. A good story to see. Sometimes they dont always report the best stories. We have a busy news cast for you. President trump, soon to be in arizona. He is going to have a rally tonight. Pete escaveto, looking forward to that interview. We got to begin in the east bay, we are await agnus conference at berkley city hall that is supposed to get underway any minute. By a group of elected leaders, expected to denounce a rally set to happen sunday. We talked about this planned event. Ali is joining us to tell us what officials are planning to say. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning. They have described their News Conference set to happen any minute as a way to quote condemn racism and bigotry in the east bay. Specifically talk about the rally that is supposed to happen sunday at Civic Center Park in berkley. You can see now they have the podium set up, cameras, we saw berkleys mayor, he is supposed to speak and state senator nancy skinner, keith carson, congressional representative barbara lee. What they are going to be discussing, spokeswoman, says the mayor will announce a city wide campaign, united against hate, promoting alternative civic events for people and families to take part in the day of the rally on sunday. Those alternative events includes teachings and liberties and rights. The plan is to have them held away from the downtown area, away from the rally at Civic Center Park in order to encourage people to avoid potential violence or conflicts. We understand the people are concerned, we are concerned. What we have seen around the country in recent months, especially in the last couple of weeks is very scary and we havent seen anything of that level in berkley but have seen violence. Reporter this is what she is referring to. The theme in april, Civic Center Park when fates broke out between people supporting and opposing President Trump. 20 people arrested and 11 people injured. To recap, there is a rally hosted by no to marksism, what some are calling a right wing rally, supposed to happen in berkley on sunday. I have to mention a short time ago, the woman is not out here anymore, a transgender woman who identified herself as the organizer of that no to markism rally says she is not a white supremacist or right wing and doesnt want kkk members showing up. It could attract people that maybe the organizers werent initially intending to show up in the first place. A concern about violence and ways to keep people out of the downtown area is one of the things that the elected leaders are expected to talk about. They were supposed to start the frees conference 9 press conference 9 00 a. M. Sharp. They are behind the doors and preparing to make remarks once things get going at 9 00. Back to you guys. President trump getting ready to head out west to arizona. The president departed the white house a short time ago for joint based andrews where he is going to be boarding air force 1 and heading to yuma, arizona. President trump announced he is ramping involve ment in afghanistan. In an address to the nation, he said though he wanted to pull u. S. Troops out of afghanistan, now he says that would only give an opening for terrorists to move if. The president said he would not announce how many extra troops will be sent to afghanistan. Americas enemies must never know our s or believe they with wait us out. I will not say when we are going to attack, but attack, we will. President trump wants more cooperation from pakistan saying while the u. S. Is giving pakistan billions of dollars thation country is housing the very terrorists we are fighting. Mike pence believes President Trumps plans for afghanistan will be successful. What President Trump announced yesterday was a whole new strategy for south asia that said we are going to be stride the resources provide the resources and military personnel and error assets necessary to support the afghanistan armies, efforts to defeat the taliban, there to dwroi networks that use afghanistan and portions of pakistan as safe havens. The Vice President p praised President Trumps call for pakistan to stop sheltering terrorist organizations. Joining us live this studio, james tailor, political professor from the university of San Francisco. Thank you for coming in. Getting the president getting hit hard by lawmakers saying where are the details what is the strategy as we heard the president say if his address, i dont have to give the secrets. Why should we give the secrets away . In a way. He is privy to information we are not. The commander and chief, the different generals advising him. It seems donald trump is determined to reiterate this campaign where he said these things on his campaign, he reiterated he didnt want to may his hand or show his happened to the opposition. Nixon came up with the the of vietnamization, he promised before the election that worked for him and played the game, if you elect me, i will deliver a secret victory in vietnam and didnt work and ended up being a deescalation. The president is putting negotiation aside, he says we are to the nation building, we are killing terrorists. From someone that builds himself as the chief negotiator, does this tactic surprise you . It does. The scene of the military backdrop. The solution was a comprehensive soft power, hard power mix to end the 14year war. This was going on for 14 years. I dont pro port to be an expert in the area. As far as foreign policy, every president since Woodrow Wilson engaged in perpetual war. Everyone engaged in what conservative critics have said is a doctrine of perpetual war. Donald trump will forge an on going agenda with an endless war. He brought in to the endless war doctrine. The president reversing course. He said he wanted to get u. S. Troops out of afghanistan. Now, in essence he is ramping up the troop levels. We dont know how many more might go in to the country. What other political risks for him in just doing a complete 180. The political risks are real. This is a complete reversal since 2013, donald trump had been tweeting and talking about loud about why we need to get out in terms of the treasure cost and blood cost, americans dont need to be involved in afghanistan. Its one thing to be a critic and another thing to be president. He had to make deliberate decisions with the advice of his chiefs. Before i introduce you, we showed the picture of the plane, he is about to board and take off to arizona. Im curious what president we see at the rallies. Last night we saw a scripted President Trump. Some say on both sides of the aisle looked president ial. Whatever capital he gaped to recover from last tuesday, he will under mine tonight. Donald trump will get caught up in the moment. We will talk awithout phoenix tomorrow. And the aftermath. We will forget that this afghanistan speech happened yesterday. Thats the kind of cycle we are in, the perpetual, on going cycle of the absurd. No matter what aid is advising him, he is going to do what he is going to do at these rallies. General kelly maybe able to manage the staff downward. In the 2 oar 3 weeks if power, he has not been able to manage the president. Donald trump will be donald trump unleashed, this is not a Campaign Life event. This is paid for by the Donald Trump Campaign for 2020. The president is both running as president and governing at the same time. Most president s do that but do it more subtly. He is having an outward campaign. If the elements that showed up last week in charlottesville show up tonight, as the president gave this powerful speech that was misplaced where he took apart of the speech that should have been used in terms of national unity, thinking this is the speech the president made last week, he would have been like a new black leader if he had investigative gave last week. It needs to be we need to deal with our domestic political relations. They play out this terms of how we relate to other countries in the world.
