Three months and one day since flooding in san jose force thousands of people from their homes. I went to subway to talk to the mayor and i learned theres many families without permanent homes. Mayor sam accardos office on the 18th floor of city hall above and a few miles away from the site of devastating flooding along coyote creek the day floods hit 11, there was no warning from any of the 14,000 people evacuating as a result. As of today, 200 evacuated families still do not have a permanent place to live. We are laser focused on getting those families back into stable housing. 200 families and hotels staying with friends or relatives. What do you think about that . Its a terrible situation for the families. Despite an outpouring of community support, people donating time and money to those in need finding housing for flood victims is proving to be difficult. Evacuees many who spent several nights in shelters are now getting housing vouchers and money for transportation but they are not home. We had an Affordable Housing crisis before this hit so this is just making it more acute and we recognize that there are larger challenges to tackle. Really to address Affordable Housing problem. In the meantime, we can certainly continue to push harder, we are still soliciting from folks who want to donate for example used cars good will is helping to prepare desperate repair families has, those are things we are pushing on until we get everybody on their feet. And the city work to find more money and help for families, theres another issue related to the flood. Im concerned about nothing changing on when it comes to clearing out coyote creek he wants to take matters in his own hands. We are looking at as a city how can we do this ourselves. We have to get permits from the Water District and everybody else to do that but im convinced if they will not do it, we need to find a way to do it. The Water District planned to retrofit anderson dam which spilled over february leading to the coyote creek flooding. The multiyear multimillion dollar project and the mayor envisions starting small and focusing on coyote creek. Getting into the channel and starting to deal with vegetation and sediment and other issues that may cause flooding we will do better than spinning wheels and spending money on lawyers asked the mayor says heading into dry months, something has to be done now to prevent a repeat of what we saw in february. We have seen the same floods hitting two decades ago, two bond measures have passed and not much has been done to improve that corridor. In addition to clearing the channel, the mayors of the cities also in the process of improving notification process when floodings expected antiaging notification protocols going doortodoor instead of relying on these and improving technology to get people more warning but when you figure 200 families with a friend and at a hotel its difficult to find housing. Median rent in san jose 2830 per month. Its a lot. Today marks the beginning of the fourth month after the floods. Do they have the money to fix the problem themselves . Theres longterm Santa Clara Valley Water District is going to fix anderson dam which will prevent flooding of county creek. The city wants to get permits and roll up the sleeves and figure out the things that we do to the gutters. Get it done. The mayor does not want to spend money on attorneys but focus on solutions. Quin was crazy about curls. But it took a twist of fate to find a highend curler at such a head turning price. And thats the beauty of a store full of surprises. It will be tough not to approve, 60 would be great. They have made big moves that 68 would be nice. New general manager jon lynch and new coach. Mark cabanas has more in this exclusive interview with the new gm. Its about the future of the team people who know me well will tell you i cannot make a lot of promises but i will make of you. We will assemble a team that will make you proud. Something stands out to you that surprised you, taking your back or you thought wow . I think the totality of the job. Its called general manager for a reason. I thought i was just picking players. Its more than that. I do that but i think the totality of it , theres a lot of Big Decisions in my former life i made three decisions per day. Which car do i drive, where are we going for dinner, the hardest part about this for me, when you have to tell people that are good people and good players that you do not fit in the plans but i can look them in the i myself and kyle likes to do the same and say heres why. As long as you are honest with people, thats what i always feel. As long as someone is being honest, i didnt have to agree with the assessment but i can live with it. Thats what we are trying to do. The job has been fun. And franzen San Francisco 49ers releasing quarterback. You had a tough decision to make with an individual who ran into a problem. That set out a signal going back to having been at the draft day party, a lot of fans were very positive about that because they felt it showed signs of a new direction. It was gut wrenching. It was a starting player for us but we made a decision , wasnt meant to send a message no. If it did, thats okay. So i transitioning now into some of those decisions that are more toward the playing field, you have had a number, maybe 25, 30 transactions minimally. If you like. Right. How difficult has that been for you and are you liking the way the communication has gone with your coaches and talent evaluators . I think its been extraordinary thus far. The working relationship between upstairs and downstairs, the front office and the coaching staff, theres been tremendous interaction and i was hopeful it would be the case because i knew kyle and i, we saw football and a similar light we see life in a similar light. We are challenging each other and theres been a number of examples, kyle and i do not agree on everything but one thing its easy to say we agree to disagree and move on. You dont want to do that, what we do is sell each other and why we believe passionately about this. What does it take in your minds eye along with kyle and various coaches to be a 49er as you envision the team going forward. What are you looking for . You know, its interesting you asked the question because one of the things kyle talks about, he calls it what it takes and what it takes to win championships and we are looking for guys that honestly have the talent. Kyle has done a great job i think and the staff has done a great job of each position these are the traits we look for. It may not be what the rest of the league views as the ideal traits but for us its what we are looking for, we want guys that love to compete and love the game of football. We want guys that have contagious competitiveness and guys that are leaders and to me leaders make people around you better. Everyone do they check every box no but thats part of it. Now that we have them, lets develop them and we like what we have. Part two of the interview with jon lynch shares tonight at 5 00 here on ktvu fox two. Close look at the general manager. San Francisco Police have arrested one man for a late night Home Invasion in the bayview neighborhood. Investigators say that could be at least two people on the run. Police say they started to search after exchanging gunfire with one suspect. Christien kafton with the latest Reporter Police were here a couple months ago they have left and we can tell you we are front of the home where the activity was centered overnight and it appears some people live in this building are in the process of trying to move out after the night they have had. Police were back here early this morning and it looks like, again, some people are moving out at least for now. Investigators say they were called to the scene here for a Home Invasion at around 11 00 last night and when they arrived officers approached the front door of his home and thats when they say the suspects bolted out of the back of the home. Police will not say how many people there looking for at this time but at least one of the suspects fired his gun at the officers and one officer fired back for your multiple suspects were running fired back. Multiple suspects were running. In that chase they were able to catch one suspect in the Home Invasion. Officers issued a shelter in place for five hours while they locked down the neighborhood. The other suspect managed to get away. Police say despite the fact multiple suspects are still on the run, they do not believe there is a threat to the neighborhood. We do believe that residents were targeted in a sense but the subjects chose the house for reason, get we cannot go to specific there but we do not feel theres a large threat to the neighborhood in general. One of the occupants of the home was injured in the initial Home Invasion reportedly treated at an area hospital and was back at the scene talking with police earlier this morning. Officers are not telling me why they believe the home was targeted and what if anything the suspects managed to get away with. And no word on how many suspects they are looking for at this time. The best source of information may be the suspect who is in custody at this point. Officials are not releasing much information about who the suspect is. We are not clear on whether he is the gunman in this case. Please nothing whether or not they recovered a firearm in their search for the suspects last night so there are a great deal of questions. Officers believe the suspect on the run but do not pose a threat to the greater neighborhood. They believe though suspects were after that particular will be spent Christien Kafton live in San Francisco thank you we have been working on headlines in the newsroom. Here are some top stories were following. San bruno man accused of killing his neighbor and dismembering of a body is due in court today. Prosecutors say stubblefield may have been angry about a dispute over a space heater. During the last court hearing, he pleaded not guilty to several charges including homicide, robbery, burglary. Hes being held on 10 million bail. Defense in the sierra lamarr murder trial is scheduled to call its first witness in the penalty phase of the trial. Thursday prosecutors wrapped up their case against garcia torres, emotional testimony by sierra parents. The body of sierra has never been found. Garciatorres was found guilty on all counts. Including the murder of sierra and attempted kidnapping of three other women. The jury is deciding whether to recommend the Death Penalty or life in prison. Man who jumped off of a boat to rescue his son who fell overboard and the delta is still missing this morning. The boy was rescued in the waters near pittsburgh but the coast guard and other search teams have spent two days looking for signs of the father. Theres no word on if the search will resume today. Those are some of your Morning Headlines from the newsroom. Mike, sal, gasia back to you. The perfect storm of technology is helping more people start a family. Ktvu pam cook takes a tour of one of the most successful fertility clinics in the country in the bay area. Parents love to talk about kids but the emotional journey they took to get there has been a very hushhush topic for so many people. I feel women, this is what we were brought on this earth to do and if you cannot do it, you are not worth anything. You know what, i had to squash that. Were christina, having a baby to gears and turned into a medical process filled with doctors appointments and expensive in vitro fertilization drugs or ivf. Cement at my breaking point where wanted to give up, he says dont give it up lets do it one more time have a good feeling about this. If i did not listen to him, who knows. Would not have gianna. Yes, i wouldnt but she went to pacific fertility clinic in San Francisco and found she was certainly not alone. You are born with 1 million eggs and we do not reduce 1 million kids. In fact for 25yearold the ratio of egg to baby is about 31. For a 40yearold, its about 20 1. And that is certainly more common these days. According to the cdc, the first time mothers average age in california went from 25 in the year 2000 to 27 by the year 2014. Its even older and San Francisco, sutter health, see pmc reports nearly half of their firsttime moms are over the age of 35. Those kids are literally one in 1 million. What happens to the other ex courts they are never used. Most of them do not have the potential for making a baby. Reporter thats what our own reporter alex savidge and his wife found out, her eggs were not viable to make a baby and to make things even harder, they could not just use an egg donor. She was not going to be able to physically carry a baby. It changes like a dad changes but i dont have the motherly touch. As a woman it is hard to face reality that i cannot carry a baby. Thats my reality. Its not going to happen for me. They were able to find a surrogate mother but most of us at work and had no idea the pain alex and his wife are going through. There is a stigma about not about infertility issues and not being able to have children in a natural way. And we certainly we felt that. I dont know, maybe we will not have kids or its not meant to be. Maybe its not our reality. But i guess not. Never understood until i had my own kids. I have been doing this for five years before i had my own kids and then when my baby was in my arms, thats when i really understood what this was all about. Now, fertility clinics do so much more than just helping couples to get pregnant. We have now recommendations to our patients that has nothing to do with fertility but recessive diseases you may carry like cystic fibrosis. The doctor started one of the first ivf programs in the u. S. I Vanderbilt University 30 years ago. He says there are 274 defects they can test for and perhaps prevent you can now pick and choose one healthy egg and sperm so multiple births using ivf are no longer the norm. Critics argue, this is playing god. The first of all, we are not playing anything. We are serious about everything we do. Secondly, we help people the way a surgeon helps people come as pediatricians help people, and if thats being god, god gave me the ability to do it. Technology has stepped in but insurance has not stepped up. Ivf is for people who have money. Im not saying that we have a lot of money, but because we took families thats my family, his family, our savings it took a gofundme account. It took everything you can imagine. To try to create the family we wanted. There are times when you feel like why are we being punished because we are unable to have children in a natural way, why it felt like we were being punished. The fact money is keeping people from having the greatest gift in the world, its heartbreaking to me. Ivf procedures can easily run 20 30,000, a donation and surrogate services can run 60 100,000. Some companies are stepping in to attract more top talent especially women. For example, facebook, apple among the very first are stepping in to attract more top talent especially women. For example, facebook, apple among the very first to offer egg freezing as part of its benefits package for employees who want to delay starting a family. Alex savidge joins us, thank you for being here. A lot of dads and parents have a similar story but they never talk about it. Why did you decide to be public on your Facebook Page and on the news . I think we decided to share our story mainly to give people a sense of hope that as you saw from her piece, there are many options from a medical standpoint to be able to grow a family, especially the Way Technology has come along. I think beyond that, we wanted to let people out there no that they are not alone let people out there know that they are not alone its part of the struggle, many people are struggling with infertility issues. As a matter of fact, over many years we have been on this emotional journey for us, we every time we opened to someone or many times one we would open up to someone about what we were going to, we would hear similar stories. We struggled to get pregnant. And i thought that was great. More and more people talking about the issue. And that is why we wanted to put it out there. All of us are parents here. When you brought your child home, i know its hard to describe but it must have been extra emotional to bring that baby home. Yes, ive been asked that before. Its a very good question. I know anyone who has a kid, whether you no matter how long it took you and what you went through to have the baby, i know everyones baby is special and i remember every kids special cement. A does feel like special to them, feels like the end of a long difficult journey when we had our second child and it felt as though our family was complete and i was thinking about it with the peace running, we have been trying , working on this for seven or eight years. Its a long, difficult struggle. Yes, they feel extra special to me sure, absolutely because of what we went through picketed all the money that we spent to bring them into this world. Is a tens of thousands . Absolutely. Okay over the years we spent couldnt begin to ballpark it. It would be too scary to try to put a total figure on it but tens of thousands of dollars over the years because nothing is covered by insurance. The last thing that was covered by insurance was when my wife went in for the first consultation with the fertility doctor. Her insurance covered that after that, every thing was paid outofpocket. Two beautiful children. Do you dwell on the past as much now that you have these two children, the frustration you went through, do say no. Lets move forward. No we focused on making them the center of the universe. And we want their story and how they came into this world and what could be considered to be a different way, we dont ever want that to be something we wanted to be something we are upfront about and talk to them about all along. This is how you came into the world. Mom could not care you, so we had to bring some other people in. Im trying not to cry. I didnt mean to make you cry. Your story, your families beautiful. I have known a little. About it through the years. Thank you for sharing your story. Its our pleasure and like i said, i hope thats the hope is it makes other people realize they have options and you truly are not alone and there are many people struggling with these issues. We are one couple dealing with this next very powerful. Happy to do it. Say hello to the family. I will. Thank you. Appreciate it.
