Set underway. Yes. I want to ask one of the political analyst if he thinks that bernie did enough. First developing news in a tense fire fight continuing in monterey. It is showing no signs of slowing down. Reporter there is a lot at stake here. Here in carmel you can see that the smoke is still very thick. We are not sure what the weather is going to do today. And you know that one of the big concerns is that this fire is going to move closer to homes. As of this morning it is just 10 contained. The fire started on friday. It is just south of carmel. The wind has been sort of unpredictable, blowing the fire in different directions. 20 homes have been destroyed. The big challenge continues to be the rough terrain. Cal fire couldnt drop any water on the fire yesterday because of low visibility so they relied on ground crews a this that had to lay in fire pumps. They are hoping that air tankers could go up to help dump water on the plane. The cal fire captain thinks that may happen. The heat will definitely continue and they are forecasting that it will increase the rest of the week with a point that it will burn the marine layer off faster. But the flip side of that firefighters will get more fatigue because of the heat. Reporter so far 300 people have been evacuated, anxious, worried. They asked a lot of questions at a meeting held last night at an elementary school. More people in the surrounding area near carmel could be evacuated. Cal fire doesnt expect to have containment until next friday august 5. Even so a lot of the people who live here are thankful for the firefighters. Here on the ground trying to get this fire out. All right, thanks. Alameda county fire chief is responsible too. A lot of the large fire is burning. Well talk to him live about this underway and the challenges to recruit the firefighters for the first responders. The the smoke will be contributing to the poor air quality here in the bay area. This is video from yesterday as you can see the haze. The alert is in effect for the bay area. This is what they tweeted out. Lots of smoke from the fire this morning, dont call 911 unless you see flames. Reporter we will bring her in for what is happening down there. Yes, we are looking at warmer weather, although it could be a lot worse for july. 70s and 80s in the forecast. It is now beginning to settle into the bay area and our air quality is suffering a bit as you mentioned because of the fire. Check in first on the expectations for today in and around the carmel area. 70s and 80s with that southerly breeze. Not too bad. The the winds could play a huge factor. The winds arent expected to be too bad down to 25 , which is dry. But again for midsummer it could be worse. All the way into sierra yesterday as we are looking at the spare the air day. Unhealthy for the sensitive groups, but for anybody in the bay area youll see the smoke and smell the smoke. You dont want to be outdoor for too long. I will have a look at those numbers expected for today because some of the hotter spots are topping out at 100 degrees. Day two of the National Convention in philadelphia. Amid the scandal over their party emails. And of course senator Bernie Sanders. Tonight we are expected to hear from them there live in philadelphia. Is the Party Unified or not . Thats the big question. The big thing to watch out for will be the role call when they put in they say who they would vote for. In a push for unity that it may be Bernie Sanders who nominates her. Hillary clinton is expected to become the first female president ial nominee of the Major Political party today. The occasion overshadowed, however, by unrelenting support from Bernie Sanders. Angered by the email scandal implying that the democrats favored clinton over the vermont senator. Hillary clinton must become the next president of the United States. First Lady Michelle obama as well as warren and booker threw in their support behind the presumptive nominee. Last night theme unite together as the party deals with the ongoing turmoil surrounding sanders. This guy is not a nominee, but changed the national conversation, affecting the party, changing our platform. We appreciate that. Were going to go forward together. Reporter bill clinton is addressing the convention tonight set to focus on his wifes history of trying to make a difference in the lives of women and children. This is someone that will have a record, a very consistent record throughout her life of not just working on behalf of the children and the families and our country, but actually delivering the results. Reporter as you mentioned that bill clinton will address the crowd tonight that it will be interesting to see what kind of reception he gets the 8th convention speech. But the Democratic Party is very different than what it was just eight years ago, going very much far to the left. How will those delegates who booed the folks on stage react to the former president . Well need to wait and see for his big speech tonight. Thank you. With us this morning in studio joe thuman. Lets start with Bernie Sanders who said thank you to all his supporters last night. He pointed out the pledged delegates at the convention hall, asking them to basically jump on his back to support Hillary Clinton and did he do the job, are they going to follow him . That remains to be seen as we should distinguish people that feel more passionate about this from the millions of people he also mentioned when he trotted out the numbers from the campaign of the resolution and how they feel. I think that there will be a real goodies text between lets say a woman voter who is 44 years old voted in several elections and a 19 to 20year old voting in the first election. Millennial as a group, i think that they felt a little bit there, but not by Bernie Sanders, but people like Sarah Silverman saying they are reacting in a ridiculous way and the people that threw the value fairness, equity, and truthfulness. They are not seeing a lot of it right now. In other words people younger are more idealistic and more progress prognatic. He told people what he expects them to do, but found a way to respond to the dnc emails by pointing out how legitimate that the campaign was. He earned every one of the 32 minutes that he got to speak last night by running a very good campaign. The question remains what will these Younger Voters do . Theoretically 90 of committed Bernie Sanders delegates would vote for Hillary Clinton. But the poll that asked them about that asked them to choose between trump and clinton, not necessarily to say are you going to vote or not . Historically in this country young people dont vote. I think the convention is still giving a lot of the young voters a reason not to participate if they are angry about it and there needs to be more to be done to reach out to young voters to make sure that they will stay inside the democratic stronghold. You mentioned polls and the most recent poll shows a bounce for donald trump coming in to a 45 compared to 41 for Hillary Clinton. It will last for a few days. Shell get hers as well. Remember when you have a whole week of immediate yall to yourself and that it will have some affect on people that are just beginning to pay attention. That they are getting it that week with some good speakers last night. That it wasnt just the ones we mentioned. I thought she gave a marvelous speech. The only one who wasnt booed. That is interesting and also the only one that isnt running for office. Also the only one who i dont think that he will be happy right away that he attacked some of the other speakers, but he didnt send out a tweet about her. And maybe that in his eyes. Lets think about that, you cannot attack the person when your wife is there. Yes. I thought the first lady at the end of it is that she talked about shaping our childrens lives. And really for the voters to make that choice between the convention we saw last week and this week and this is what it is not about, but its about, you know, giving the example of her two daughters growing up, but about the future of our children. Talking about the grown daughters, but also a person of color navigating this odd place of privilege that she also occupies, living in a white house built by slaves. A lot of that was personal and not political in its own way, but also shows that difference, between someone that has been there. The understanding if you will. Which is a democratic scene. Us, not me. And that is a real contrast that youre seeing between the campaign. You know bernies speech seemed to be a combination of antitrump and some pro hillary. But the speech was more positive and uplifting. He needs to keep saying if you dont vote for hillary youre getting trump . Thats a message he needs to make and it remains to be seen if it will work. And that it remains to be seen as well. Not that it needs to be said, but if mrs. Clinton is going to bring the voters in she needs to make that pitch as well, not just the surrogates. And her husband might do it tonight. By the way, there are some great speakers coming up. Bill clinton is always terrific at these conventions. Ill bet hell go after Donald Trumps record for an hour and 16 minutes. No, im just kidding. Senator beaker may have picked the next speech because he had a powerful speech as well. Yes. Hell run for president some day. I hope he stays in the senate long enough to develop relationships for those. One of the lessons from Barack Obamas presidency is that he had not been there long enough to have a relationship with a lot of those people. Cory booker is one that will be there. I saw a couple of those signs. There you go. Thank you, joe. I appreciate it. Thank you. And after the appeal to the supporters to vote for Hillary Clinton, our question of the day is this. Should sander supporters get on board with Hillary Clintons campaign . And the question that we have been asking you throughout the morning, looking at twitter. Most people if i could punch back to remember my password here that most people are saying yes that they should with a couple of people though that didnt respond to me to say that, you know, no. Lets just hope that bernie supporters will come here instead of sitting it out. Saying no that the principles are important. No corruption, money on politics, hrc, which is hillary. I followed up with him as he will vote for a third party candidate. Keep talking to us on twitter. Well check more of your responses at 9 30. Coming up next, tires slashed at a bart station. Cal fires latest update update shows that it has charred more than 19,000 acres. Finally some good news to bring you from the firelines of los angeles county. Most of the people forced to evacuate their homes due to the raging fires of the Santa Clarita valley have been allowed to return home. But the the san fire is still only 10 contained. Resources from all over the state are sent in. David rocha joins us live. Chief when they have to send engines from different stations, do they start pulling out . And who coordinates with that . Yes, it is a local agency to start moving that direction. And then north to south. And then to the state level. Im the number two coordinator. We coordinate all the aide. How many strike teams do you have just south of carmel . We have 24 strike teams. 22 firefighters. Five engines and a battalion chief and an assistant. Then 11 teams. In total about 35 local government strike teams are there. Reporter as you make your decision on which resource to send away that youre careful not to leave the bay area exposed . Absolutely. The all the stations get back filled as the firefighters are leaving. And that mentioned earlier that they are at fire. Do they also train for wildland fire experience from time to time . Absolutely, noah. They are trained for the wildland Fire Fighting and fighting fires. I saw the numbers 58,000 acres have burned. If you were to give a state of the state, late july here, what would it be . And the issues that were having this year are the fight. The fifth year of the drought and that it will be really dry. So at night they are not seeing what they usually see for fuel. Is there a false sense of security that youve got all the rain over the winter. Were okay, arent we . A lot of people dont realize were still in that drought. Yes, we are still in the drought. A little bit of the rain with Northern California not affecting Southern California the same way. But the heavier fuels are dying with a lot of problems up and down the state. 66 billion trees. Yes. I think that it is 66 million and some estimating as many as 80 million. So it is a lot of dead fuel thats out. There reporter as firefighters retire and move out, are you getting enough moving into the system to replace them throughout state . Or even in your region . Yes, we are actually in a recruitment period right now seeing a number of those applicants to move into it and after being in the business for 30 years, bringing new feoffments to learn. Especially in the situation where you have extreme fire conditions in the the year being thrown into the fire. And do you get a sense of those that live in Alameda County . Weve heard stories of People Living in modesto. Do you have that happening . Yes, some of our firefighters do live in the Central Valley and that the cost of living is one reason for them doing that. Their schedule will allow them to do that for a certain extent. But thats one of the things that firefighters from everywhere will come together. And they were not necessarily oakland firefighters or Alameda County firefighters from the bay area. I noticed a couple of trees cutting close to my deck. I kept thinking about Defensible Space. Approach people to make sure you have Defensible Space around you. After appealing to his supporters that you have to vote for hillary and cheer for people that are upset over that. Do you think that they should put their support and their vote behind Hillary Clinton . A number of people on twitter are saying yes. And quickly that they would tweet absolutely. The responsible thing to do is not vote or vote trump. With a little emoji, the sad face on it. Good politics, being responsive to their concerns, the possible constituent concerns, thank you for responding. Joining us live from philadelphia. , reading your peace this morning. I want to start on the comedic side with Sarah Silverman. To the bus people you are being ridiculous. Do you think that it worked last night . What else she said is one of the most poignant things. That she is a bernie supporter that they brought us along, opening our eyes to a lot of those things. Sort of the bridge between the bernie people and the clinton people, trying to bring them along to where they would like to be, which is supporting her. A lot of them are saying i just cant do it or i may vote for trump. Do you think that time will help to change their minds and they will eventually vote for Hillary Clinton . They were carrying the sign. I asked them are you going to eventually vote for Hillary Clinton . I said i dont know, ask me in november. After tonight well have the role call vote that they will be able to fill their Hearts Desire to vote for Bernie Sanders and then that they can, you know, to have a have a clear conscious to start to move on. But i think that tonight that it will be important in that way. Terrible television, but important that way. It was the combination of that we must stop trump. Hillary clinton is the person to do it. He made surprise appearance this morning at the breakfast calling out the folks in a way, that it will be okay. I think that he has said it for weeks now that he will support and he will not go out to campaign. I believe him with that option as we will be high and low and to continue with Bernie Sanders. Did she have the speech of the night . Yes, absolutely. A personal touch that she has touched about living in the white house with that house built by slaves to go out to play with their dog in the front yard. It was very emotional. But she is extremely intelligent. Just a wonderful speaker, very warm. I even heard the republicans talking about how good the speech is. After all the emotions we heard, is the email scandal still a thing or yesterdays news . It will always be a theme because it will confirm that longtime fears and their belief that the system was rigged against them with them being sander supporters and it was. So i think that it is not going away, you know, maybe over the next couple of days. But that will be a scar and it will be there for a while. We appreciate it as always. Look forward to the conversation tomorrow. We will see you tomorrow. Sounds good. Joining us all week on the the 9 and also ross palombo will be there in philadelphia who will be filing those reports from the convention. Itll be hot with temperatures nearing 100 degrees for some of the hotter air days. First the live look across the bay where we could see and view the Golden Gate Bridge and the low cloud cover. The marine layer is not as deep that it has been compressed for the last 24 hours as they will begin to strengthen over the area and for that marine influence not reaching them today nor the next couple of days. Air quality for today will be moderate, although that if you see the smoke be aware that they will continue to burn, the east bay as well as the santa clara valley. Thank you very much. And the officer mark costas, thanks for joining us. Thanks for having us. At what moment did you say to yourself i need to travel out there . And only going into the funeral and about shortly after hearing it. Thank god that i was able to be chosen to go out there to represent them. And officer costas, it is one you truly dont want to experience. Can you describe what it was like for you to be there . It was pretty life changing with the amount of support the officers are receiving that it has been tremendous. And that it is is almost life changing for me. This community has gone through a lot. They show great strive to Stay Together to get through these trying times. And your uncle was killed in the line of duty. How did that moment kind of play in your decision to go and just in general how you approach your job today . In my profession here in South San Francisco, i put efforts into attending as many of these events as i can that they are very unfortunate and very tragic. A constant reminder to me knowing what those families are going through and a difficult time. Every uniform that shows up will be a sense of their support that will really help their families get through the typical times theyre having right now. How is it being a Police Officer today . To see them coming up for their officers is tremendous. How is it for yourself being a Police Officer . The community we work in will make it easier to be a Police Officer we have a hard working community. And sergeant, youve got a lot of support at home after the shootings in dallas. That they were coming off dropping off the flowers. This is the kind of community we were fortunate to work in, having that support, having our residence that dont have any connection to the events coming down to drop off the appreciation that we provide, knowing that the community will support us and we are not going unnotice. All right, officer mark costas from the San Francisco police department. Thank you for your time, and your service. Safe travels back to the bay area. Thank you. Well send it back to you at the desk. Sfpd at a barricade situation involving a 13year old boy with autism. Also coming up, the special wish for a little boy being granted today. Coming up, the fascination with the trust. And the opponents of the arena are appealing a recent decision to move forward. We invited women to a spa to dish soap. Body wash. You may not feel it, but some body washes can contain cleansers found in dish soap. Dove body wash is different. It has only the gentlest cleansers. It just made me feel good. This is dove. A story at 9 00 last night we had andreas about a dispute involving the 13yearold boy and that it escalated to the point where he grabbed a knife. Inside the garage and underneath the home. The house were talking about specifically is the blue one, right . We are training our officers, working every day. What we need here is time to community and that it is the people we are dealing with and so that they dont feel threatened. And it is important to help us get that peace resolution. Why not go in and hustle out . We have all the time in the world. He has autism. We have been working through the night talking to his parents and to communicate with him. Thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate that. And the street is blocked off. We understand he is sleeping and that they will wait for this out. Thank you. A group opposing the arena is not backing down. Right near the new medical center. They have been accusing the city of violating their laws saying that they engaged in that extensive Planning Project for several years, upheld by every regulatory agency, receiving unanimous approval by the board of supervisors, now vetted, upheld by the superior court as they would have the right to appeal and they have not had much success today, appearing to be another delayed tactic to do a little bit more than their pockets. We have reached out to the spokesperson for the team that will be joining us here on the 9 within the next week. This morning we will be joined by the attorney for the mission bay alliance. I have to ask you that a lot of people are asking me that it went through the the Planning Commission and the elected board of supervisors, all saying that it will be okay to go. And that it is not unusual for the matter to go to the court of appeals when they rule against a case with as many issues to affect the violence of the people of San Francisco to ultimately be decided. Who will be paying for their legal fight . The mission bay alliance. Faculty, community members, nurses, doctors, very concerned about the impacts. I imagine that the legal costs are in the millions. A lot of them are both working on it. Do you think its a Civic Society for an arena like this where they have the aflees in the city . And there may be civic priorities that they want to sue. Protecting the environment and making sure they will come ply comply with the law. Years ago it was planned with these hospitals that are in mission bay south. Thats been the planned redevelopment of this area. We have problems with gridlock already with at t park and the other problems with just that traffic system. But they have done wonders to that area. You know, and that a lot of people will have a problem as they have been emailing me with a group of those donors, trying to set their policy as to what they want in that area when the other people decide that it is okay and we dont know who the donors are. Why do they want to dictate what goes in there . And what is happening with this project that it is short circuited that people are going to. Right because he signed that fast tracking. And that it will be proceeding quickly, but no excuses for their zoning that they are putting this project in an area where they have not dealt with those issues that will cost them millions of dollars and that they have not dealt with the other issues. And how is the traffic going to cost them millions of dollars . Because for those transformations that will have millions of them to put in their systems that may assist in dealing with an 18,000 seated arena in the middle of the arena impacted by at t park. So what is the next step . Here is the appeal. What do you do for the rest of today, tomorrow. What are we going to see . We have an opening brief due in a month. And we will file a repeal brief and there will be a ruling. That will probably be in the fall . This is an unusual case because of the fast track under the legislation. So we dont know how long it would take. Normally it takes a year or two, but we do not know. It will be up to the courts to determine that. Thank you so much for coming in. This issue is not going away. All right, well be right back after the break. At at t, we believe in access. The opportunity for everyone to explore a digital world.
