Today is slightly better than usual traffic, sal. Makes up for what we had yesterday. Yesterday we had reasons for it. I think yesterday may have had a good day if we didnt have all of the crashes, gasia. I want to let you know that today the commute will be just moderate. 31minute drive according to the road sensor between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. Not a bad drive. Slowing in richmond and el cerrito. Better in berkeley as you head out to the bay bridge toll plaza. Thats about a 25minute delay. We have crowding on the rams as well. The carpool lanes are moving nicely. This is interstate 880 in oakland. Traffic looks okay. Southbound 880 begins to slow in hey war. On the san mateo bridge, that traffic will be slow today. Today is a getaway day. Joining us now is chp officer wakefield to speak about the get away and also enforcement that chp is doing over the holiday weekend. Good morning, sean. Good morning, sal. How are you doing. Im very well. Thank you very much. I think a lot of people are going to be putting the roof rack on and getting the bags packed and getting on the road. What is the best advice that you have for someone who is going to be on the roads this weekend . D . Well, as we always say for holidays, youre going to need to pack your patience. We are expecting a lot of people to hit the road, especially the common destinations like lake tahoe. If youre heading that direction, packir patience and be ready for a long trip. That being said go ahead. I was going to say your officers dont take time off. I know it is a maximum enforcement period. Theyre out there looking for impaired drivers, speeders, people doing unsafe lane changes. Sometimes when you stop people you find unexpected things. Right . Yeah. Absolutely. And we sent you a photo back in 2015 on a simple traffic stop over a maximum enforcement period. We found boxes and boxes of fireworks. We never know what we will find on traffic stops. Friday through july 4th we will have extra officers out on the road looking for people causing trouble and we will look inside and see what we can find in your cars too. When we find boxes of fireworks, you will be in a load of trouble. We are looking at video of one of the Traffic Enforcement areas, like a safety check point. Those will be up for some agencies as well. Yes. I know a lot of our allied agencies will be doing enforcement over the weekend. We also try to highlight a specific type of enforcement. For the last maximum enforcement period we did seat belts. This one we will do speeding. I brought a radar gun out here with me to show what we do to catch speeders on the road. Speed is the number one cause of collisions. We use this device that shoots laser beams. A lot of people think if you see the cop on the shoulder you can slow down in time and we wont catch you speeding. This is an instant reading. It shoots a laser beam and tells us how fast youre going. Even if you have a detector, by the time that thing goes off, we already know how fast youre going. Just great. Im being a little sarcastic. It keeps people safe if theyre not speeding. The last question that i have for you is over the years have you seen an increase or decrease in the number of people driving drunk or speeding or all kinds of offenses . Are people becoming better drives or unfortunately worse drivers . You know, i dont think we have any clear trends going on right now. Last year during our maximum enforcement period, the chp made 1100dui arrests and we had 25 People Killed on the roadways during the same time period. Unfortunately holidays are a dangerous time out on the roads which is why we have extra officers out to patrol. Slow down and wear your seat belt. Always a pleasure, sean. Thank you for joining us. No problem. You heard the man, steve. There will be more, not fewer officers out there this weekend. Im staying home. There you go. There you go. Good advice, sal. Now that you interviewed him, he has to buy his fellow officers coffee much thats how it works. Or ice cream. Yes. Or ice cream. We have pretty foggy conditions out there. Be careful. Tioga pass, one of the main eastwest thoroughfares through yosemite will open this morning. This ties the latest opening going back to 1983. The record was july 1st, 1998. Lets see. We had 198283. Was that a wet year . Yes. And this year. There is a correlation. A lot of snow up there. A lot of snow. 76 in san jose. 79 today. That is two below average. Livermore 82. San francisco, 65 today. That is two below average. Now, that Sonoma County airport runs cooler closer to town. The fog is fanning out more so today over San Pablo Bay and the south bay as well. 50s on the temps and low 60s. Plenty of 40s northward. A few in marin county. San rafael was in there briefly. Hillsberg is in there. Windsor. I know glenn helen was 47. Bodega bay at 48. That is cool. Now were seeing low 50s. West southwest. Not that strong but a component of a delta breeze at the napa airport. Once the fog retreats and it will, High Pressure is building in for about today and tomorrow. Then a weak system will approach. That will send in slightly cooler temps. If youre far enough away from the coast, upper 70s to 80s. From 73 in berkeley to 93 in brentwood. 85 livermore. 79 san jose. 86 in gilroy. Cupertino 81. 60s on the coast. 74 san mateo. 79 woodside and palo alto. A little warmer on friday, gasia. And next weekend slightly cooler. Thank you. You may have seen safe and sane fireworks on sale for the fourth of july. Theyre not legal in most cities. School administrators stripped him of his position of junior class president. Now the parents want to sue for a violation of free speech rights. The time is 7 38. The bay areas first safe and sane fireworks stands are open in dublin, ready for the fourth of july holiday. Most cities have banned all fireworks. Dublin is among the few cities where safe and sane fireworks are legal. They have designated areas where fireworks can be set off on the fourth of july. Nothing that launches or explodes. These are all considered safe and sane. So yes, if you touch them, they will burn you. But nothing that could cause fires. Now, you have to be at least 18 years old to buy these fireworks. Other bay area cities where safe and sane fireworks are legal include pacifica, gilroy, newark and union city. Joining us this morning in city is george lane of the Fire Protection system of contra costa county. Yes. You dont like the title safe and sane. You dont differentiate. All fireworks are dangerous. All fireworks burn quickly or have explosive elements. They can cause serious injury and have numerous fires that are associated with their use. They can land on structures. They can land in grandee field grassy fields. They cause us to have the resources stretched out on the fourth. They are a concern for us in the communities and we are concerned with even safe and sane fireworks. You have seen the dangers whether in person or in video. How dangerous can it be . And why is it so tough to get the message out to people to be really careful. I understand and we in the fire service understand that there is a long history of use of fireworks in the country. It is in our national anthem. We like to recognize our history and our recreation with these types of devices. But we encourage the public to go to the licensed events that are in many cities. We have 7 events in our jurisdiction coming up on the fourth or this weekend. They are licensed. A wonderful time for the family. We encourage people to enjoy those events. A lot of cities dont have the big fireworks celebration. When the big civic celebrations get shut down, do you see more of the illegal activity popping up. I think it is safe to say for several weeks before and after the fourth, our communities and this is throughout the bay area have fireworks going off at all hours of the day and night. I dont think it is associated with whether civic events are held or not. Okay. Another big concern is your ranks, youre stretched thin. That is a big issue for you as well. Yeah. On the fourth of july where we would dispatch one unit going to one call, the dispatch goes numerous incidents per dispatch. So one engine will be spanned responding to one, two, three, four, five calls at a time. When you have each of your resources extended that much, it is difficult to respond to medical emergencies, structure fires. Everybody is already stretched out. So we really encourage the public not to use illegal fireworks. And in contra costa county, all fireworks are illegal. Theyre legal in the city of dublin. If my friend who lives in dublin buys them legally and brings them to my mouse in, say, oakland where theyre not legal, is it legal to have them. It is illegal to have, use or allow the use of those fireworks. And people are responsible for any damage thats can occur. If theres a fire that results and it results in worst Case Scenarios with aircraft being deployed, with multiple structures being l the people who allowed the fireworks to be use can be held criminally responsible for those fires. The weeks before and after the fourth of july as the result of fireworks. That is correct. They are extremely dangerous. Cannot emphasize that point enough. For the most part they are explosive devices. The professional fireworks are very, very dangerous. And you have those in a personal use environment, that is dangerous and highly illegal. I take it you will be celebrating the fourth on the job. Happy fourth of july. Thank you. Our pleasure. Get ready for tougher security at airports. Coming up at 8 00, more on what you can expect when President Trumps travel ban officially takes effect today. And it changed the world of cell phones. Now so many of us cant live without it. The big milestone today for the iphone. And if you are, you know, hitting the roads soon, i would say that you should expect a little slowing here on 24 through lafayette and on 680 approaching the walnut creek interchange. Some low clouds and some fog. In fact we havent had fog the last couple of days. High pressure is building in, kind of sending that fog lower. We will talk about that and what is in store for the next few days. Celebrate the summer of heroes, only at disneyland resort. Hero up welcome back to mornings on 2. It is 7 45. Look at your screen. Firefighters in arizona battling three stubborn wildfires. The biggest one has burned over 39,000 acres north of phoenix. Thousands have been forced to evacuate in several small communities. The fire was caused by a Lightning Strike on june 7th. It is 45 contained right now. But yet another arizona wildfire burning in the Prescott National forest has grown to more than 20,000 acres. And then theres a third one that has burned 1600 acres. All of those fires are under investigation. Stigation. And a fire burning near Camp Pendleton in San Diego County keeps growing. It started last night near a campground and grew to 700 acres. The fire is headed away from the marine base and headed towards san clemente now. The firefighters are making helicopter water drops. Theyre protecting several neighborhoods that could be in danger if the fire picks up. These days it is hard to imagine a world, even a day without your iphone. It has only been around for ten years. It is backed up out to the macarthur maze. The traffic will be backed up. This is about a 20minute delay before you get on to the bridge. Traffic is okay on 880 northbound passing the coliseum. Notice it is getting a little slow. I also want to remind you that today is a big getaway day. Not as bad as tomorrow but it will be a getaway day. Lets bring in steve with todays forecast. Sal, i think everybody has cracked that phone one time or another. Now they make, you know, cases that i know. I know. Thank you, sir. Lets get to it. We have a nice little pattern. A little cooler near the coast. Warm erin land as the fog burns off. Each day today and tomorrow will be warmer closer to the deck. This coolness feels great. Thank you, keith jackson. Compared to the health that we had. How is the fourth shaping up . It looks average. Near 90 degrees inland. A little cooler if anything. Maybe. The fog and low clouds still greeting us here. It will be warmer. Some low 90s and mid80s. Im splitting the difference. But 60s and 70s coast and bay. Santa rosa 81. Today 83. San francisco only 61 yesterday. 65 today. Livermore 81 to 85. They should be 87. San jose downtown to 79. East san jose will probably be 82, 83. 81 57 is average. So close on both. 102 night 1934 the record high. And 42 way back in 1893 the record low. You can see the pattern. It is going over the bay. Over San Pablo Bay and down south towards san jose. Not a strong push east. It cant clear the hills. 50s and 60s. A cool morning for some, especially parts of the peninsula and even up to the north of marin county. A few 40s now more 50s. Palo alto 59. 55 atherton. Hillsborough cooler at 53. Belmont, 56. West southwest. Same forenapa airport. Still an on shore breeze that translates into a typical pattern here.
