Pilot from the east bay credited with saving the lives of 155 people, his heroic actions are now the focus of a hollywood movie. Traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving on 80, looks pretty good heading to the bay bridge. Mostly clear, but one more system, and thats going to give us rain by this evening. Well have more on that. Welcome back to mornings on 2. It has been almost eight years now since a pilot on the east bay became an american hero. Were talking about captain chesley Sully Sullenberger. He landed that passenger jet on the hudson river and saved all one55 on board. It game the focus of a hollywood movie. Hes a local man. Julie haener sat down to talk about the event that changed his life. May day, may day, may day. We are turning back towards laguardia. I have an emergency. We lost both engines. Reporter a life changing moment brought back to life on the big screen. And for sully, the sequence of events are fresh in his mind. I remember it accurately and specifically. Its the evacuation for me thats kind of a blur, not the flight itself. Runway 4 is available. I dont think we can make any runway. What about to our right . Were going to end up in the hudson. Say again, captain . I knew from experience the only other place in the new york area, the most densely populated places on the planet where it would be possible, was the hudson river. That was my least bad option and i was glad to have it. After that bird strike you had only 208 seconds to assess what went wrong, figure out you didnt have time to make it back to an airport, and you went for but pulled off the water landing. What could have gone wrong . So many things. Its important for people to know we had never trained for this sort of event. In fact, in our flight simulators we used at the time it was not possible to practice a water landing. This is the captain. Brace for impact. We were coming down so fast, the equivalent of descending an elevator two floors per second. If you didnt land just right, the plane could have broken apart. Yes. We had to touch down with the wings exactly level so it wouldnt cartwheel. We had to touch down with the minimum rate of descent. Reporter moments after it hit the water, the story hit the airwaves as breaking news and we were following it here in the bay area. Good evening. Im julie haener. Im frank somerville. The pictures tell the story and it is a remarkable one. The story of a disaster averted. Everyone made it out all right. We hit the water pretty hard. Kudos to the pilot. He did hell of a job. Crazy. Looked like a movie. Looked like a movie. It was incredible. Reporter that reallife story of survival masterfully recreateed with two of the biggest names in hollywood running the show. Youre played by tom hanks in the movie. Doesnt get much better than that. The whole team is a dream team. I have to tell you that giving someone else the rights to tell your life large on the big screen is a huge leap of faith. Need a count, passengers and crew. How accurate was the movie . Did they get it right . They did and in important ways. I was amazed how hard they worked to get even the small details right, especially about the flying part. Sully, dont worry. You did a great thing. It will be remembered for a very long time. Funny thing is, delivered a million passengers over 40 years in the air, and at the end ill be judged by 208 seconds. When was your last drink. Had any trouble at home . Until i read the script i didnt know the investigate board was trying to paint the picture he did the wrong thing. They were trying to railroad him into it was his fault and that wasnt the case. Today we begin the investigation. It was only through the course of the investigation that our understanding of the event was found to be accurate, that our actions were validated. But for many months we didnt know if ultimately that would be found to be the case. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen and welcome. My name is charles porter. Im a board member of the National Transportation safety board and chairman of this hearing. Reporter the ntsb hearings dragged on 15 months. Sully and his wife lori describe it as an screamly stress extremely stressful time. It was this odd feeling of people celebrating on the street, but that wasnt how we felt for a very long time. Actually a year and a half. We didnt celebrate until over a year and a half later. Reporter they say theyve always felt a serious responsibility not to turn away from the story, but to honor it. We were buried for a year in mail, and this affected people in such a personal way and so we felt this obligation not just to the passengers on the flight, but to how it made americans feel. And the hope that it gave them. Reporter for sully, its given him a new role, a platform to work towards something hes cared about his whole professional life, improving the safety of everyone who travels. Thats a responsibility i take seriously and im not done yet. Reporter julie haener, ktvu, fox 2 news. [ applause ] just so you know, that story is on our web site, ktvu. Com.
