But the cloud cover is racing in here fast. Very thick on the golden gate. Some rain embedded in this taking the turn after arizona coming up from southern california. The high desert and i think a lot of that plays in our weather with an increase in the clouds. Westsouthwest 21. But theres extremely warm hot air aloft which will translate into toasty numbers again inland. But yesterday we didnt have the high clouds. Today they will be there. Thats why i think it will be still toasty. 60s and 70s by the water or very low 80s. Alex, a lot going on . Fairly quiet. We got a few trouble spots. Well get to all of those. Mostly, though, no crashes to report around the bay area. Thats the good news as we move into the 7 00 hour and the heart of the commute. Here you go. The san mateo bridge and you can see the traffic beginning to pick up there for all of those folks heading westbound across the span and over to the peninsula. Slow going right there once you get past the pay gates. The bay bridge toll plaza, you got that sun moving up in the sky right there and pointing into the cam rahn lens camera lens. Its crowded as a bunch of folks try to make their way up the pay gates and across the incline. The fast trackers sliding through there faster than those paying cash. Let me show you the maps and the Livermore Valley has been quite crowded throughout the morning, as it normally is. Now we have a little bit of an issue. This is a crash that happened about a halfhour or so ago but still causing problems. You see it on the map. Thats a crash westbound 580 right at airway boulevard causing issues as, of course, the chp gets out there to deal with everything in that area. As we go south down to san jose, and you can see the freeway system there becoming more and more busy as we move into the heart of the commute. A few areas of slowing, a few areas where you will slow down in a big way this morning, but overall, seems okay for this time of morning. As you head up the peninsula here along highway 101, that looks like a very good ride going into the city. 7 03. Back to the desk. Happening now a heat advisory now if effect for much of the bay area. People living inland could see another day of tripledigit temperatures. Crews in the south bay already busy battling a fire burning south of gilroy. At last report its only 50 contained. The fire started before 3 30 yesterday afternoon in a canyon near the junction of highways 101 and 25. While there are no injuries or damaged buildings reported, the fire has burned through at least 50 acres. No word yet on the cause of the fire. A statewide flex alert is in alert. That calls on people to reduce their electricity use. They are also asking people to turn off unnecessarily lights and to hold off on using major appliances from 2 00 p. M. To 9 00 p. M. The main concern, air conditioning. They are also people to keep their thermostats at 78 degrees or higher. A flex alert is issued to reduce strain on the system and to help prevent blackouts. The high temperatures and fire danger prompts firefighters to try to raise awareness to safety with the fourth of july around the corner. Janine de la vega is live in los gatos. Its a message weve heard before but this year, firefighters are saying with the drought and the current temperatures, fireworks danger is extremely real. The fireworks over here on this side of the table are the safe and sane fireworks. These are legal in california but in Santa Clara County they are illegal. They are only legal in gill gilroy. These are illegal everywhere in california. These are dangerous fireworks. These will explode but they make a much smaller bang. These are explosives just like bombs. These are the kinds of things that these can literally blow your hand off or part of your arm off. People dont know the difference between these two. You said that you show me the example you were saying that some people will buy these and a gentleman was using one of these a few years ago, thought it was benign, put it in the tube, lit it. When it didnt go off, he went back to see what it gone wrong and it went off and injured him severely. They look safe. They look like the other fireworks we see, but they are not. And on the extended outlook, i think we topped out on the temps yesterday. They will still be hot. Cloudy, mostly cloudy. Things are becoming more and more heavy in many spots. One issue, highway 101 northbound at brokaw road, there is a crash involving one, two, three cars is what im showing here on the chp log. An fbi investigation into vandalism on fiberoptic cables is expanding after another incident that knocked out internet and tv service in parts of Northern California, oregon and even washington. Most recent incident happened in livermore yesterday. But investigators say vandals have been cutting cables all over the east bay for the last two years hitting every city that you see on the map. We are learning more details about how two men escaped from a maximum security prison in new york. David sweat, the man captured monday, says he was the mastermind behind the escape. The fire broke out before 3 30 yesterday afternoon in a canyon near highways 101 and 25. The fire has grown to 50 acres. Crews battled the fire all night and will remain there this morning. Theyve been attacking it from the air and on the ground. No buildings were threatened. No one hurt. There is no word on what started the fire. But coming up in our second halfhour, well talk to calfire about what the agency is doing. The statewide flex alert goes back into effect. It calls on people to reduce their electricity use. They are asking people to turn off unnecessary lights and to hold off on using major appliances during 2 00 p. M. To 9 00 p. M. The main concern here is air conditioning. They are asking people to keep their thermostats at 78 degrees or higher. Also happening today, a state gasoline tax being cut. One is an excise tax based on how many gallons of gas we buy. The numbers are rebalanced every year. But even experts say the gas tax laws are confusing. Lets get you out the door with a check on the weather. A lot of high clouds on the way. Fog on the coast. But the issue is at the the state route 92 connector to 101 over there in redwood city, there is a crash and a couple of lanes do appear to be blocked in that area. So keep that in mind as you try to make your way to the peninsula. Well get you another look here at the bay bridge toll plaza where things are all jammed up here at 8 30 and its gonna take you quite a while to make your way from Richmond West along 880 through berkeley toward the maze as well. Bear that in mind as you head out the door. 8 34 is the time, gasia and brian . Thank you. New this morning, we just received an update on a wildfire thats bumping south of gilroy. Now, calfire announced that it evaluated the size of the fire. Its now downgraded it from 50 achers to 42 acres. However, the blaze still only 50 contained this morning. It broke out before 3 30 yesterday afternoon in a canyon near the junctions of highways 101 and 25. There are no reports of any injuries or damaged buildings. The cause of the fire still under investigation. Investigators blame a car for sparking a grass fire near the benicia bridge yesterday. Flames spread to brush on the side of the road and forced two lanes of interstate 680 to be closed during the evening commute. The fire did threaten an rv Storage Facility but crews managed to put out the fire in time. There was a fire in nearby cordelia that also packed up traffic on 680. The grass fire was reported before 5 30 last night north of headache herman road. Flames were fueled by large piles of garden mulch. No word upon the cause of the fire. As you all know, fires have been popping up all over the bay area. Fire crews across the state have warnings. Daniel, first of all, weve been talking about this warning every fourth of july. The fact that california is in the fourth year of drought i imagine its more serious. Yeah, absolutely. Weve seen a significant increase in wildfires across california including the bay area as you were just reporting on and that is because conditions are so much drier this year with with the drought and thats why the warnings are to be extra safe. Safe and sane fireworks are legal in some areas of the bay area. But a lot of people may think they are in one city but actually its a difference of a couple of hundred feet it turns out they are in another county and what they are using is illegal. About 300 cities and counties here in california allow the use and sale of safe and sane fireworks. But you can go over the border into an area where they are banned. Even though they are safe and sane in one area. They are considered illegal in another. You have to be careful. If you chows to buy safe and sane fireworks, use them in the community that you buy them in. Dont take them in an area where they are not allowed. If it were up to calfire, up to you, would you ban all fireworks in california due to the extreme Drought Conditions . Its a local decision whether the city or county wants to allow those fireworks to be used in the community. Our recommendation is always go to a large public disply. Thats are often display. Those oftentimes can be much safer. Whats important is not talking about banning it but talking about those residents who choose to buy the safe and sane fireworks, use precaution. If you use them clear of flammable materials, you will do so relatively safely. Read the directions on the box. Certainly calfire, the number one priority is protecting people and property and structures from burning. I imagine, youve steen a number of pretty bad injuries as a result of people horsing around with fireworks. Yeah, absolutely. Each year we respond to hundreds of fires and medical emergencies due to fireworks. Last year in napa county, we had a fire just near yolo county and napa, the monticello fire started on july 4th. Burned 6400 acres. Caused injuries to five injuries. But the biggest threat are the illegal fireworks, those not considered safe and sane. Each year we confiscate anywhere from 75 to 100,000 pounds of illegal fireworks and we have a zero tom rans toward illegal fire tom rans toward illegal tolerance toward illegal fireworks. Make sure you buy those fireworks in the areas where they are allowed. The fact that the fourth of july falls on a saturday. Its the middle of the weekend. Is that of extra concern to you . You know, wherever fourth of july fall, we see a huge uptick in responses incidents we respond to. A lot of people understand the dangers, especially this year with the fire risk. They will be taking those extra precautions. Thats what we want to emphasize that you can use safe and sane fireworks in those communities where they are allowed but you have to take the precautions. Are we concerned . Obviously, yes, with the drought. But if we can all do our part to be safe one less spark this fourth of july means one less wildfire. And enforcement will be very high on the actual 4th of july. I imagine people want to use up the fireworks they bought in the days and weeks following so i cant imagine you are letting down your guard july 5th. Well be in total control. Sheriffs departments will be on the road patrolling for illegal fireworks. Fireworks are only allowed two days after the fourth of july. At july 6th at noon, fireworks are no longer allowed to be used here in california. So if you have not used them, you will have to save them up until next year. But well be full enforcement after that, again, even if you purchase them legally and they are safe and sane, if you have them and you use them after the july 6th date, those are considered illegal and the fines here and the punishments are very steep. You could face up to a 50,000 fine depending upon what you have in your possession and even a year in jail. It bears repeating. Im sure well do just that. Thank you for joining us. Yeah, the greek Prime Minister Just Announced in the last halfhour that he is Standing Firm and will wait for the referendum on sunday before further negotiations over a bailout package. In the meantime, the greek people are paying the price. Translator i worked for 40 years and now ive ended up begging for money. The long lines continue outside of greek banks with retirees, especially worried because they have not received their full pension for the month. Some branches have reopened today but reportedly, only for pensioners who do not have atm cards. Everyone limited to 60 euros a day from the money machines. Many of those atms have run out of cash. Theres talk that the greek government has indicated to its creditors that it may accept terms of a bailout package if they are part of a broader deal to address the funding needs for the next two years. We need to write some of the debt down and then well be able to grow on the other side. Hes talking about the International Monetary fund, the European Union. Greeks will vote on sunday on whether to accept proposals from creditors in order to access bailout funding and no decision could lead greece out of the eurozone. In the last halfhour, the Prime Minister of greece announcing that the government will wait for that vote on sunday. He says, the popular vote is more important than the decisions of the government. But gasia and brian, economists are saying, really even that vote regardless of the outcome is gonna provide little more uncertainly of what happens next. And uncertainly is something that wall street and Global Markets hate the most. Thats why the markets are down. Theres still a lot of options. It could still mean some kind of bailout, a new bailout, they leave the euro and where does it go from there . Were also talking about puerto rico as they pay off their debts. Prosecutors in San Mateo County say a man charged with stealing and crashing a dumb trump has skipped bail. 36yearold mark edward hill is accused of stealing the truck in San Francisco back in may. Officers spotted him in colma and chased after him. The pursuit ended in daly city when the truck slammed into several cars and injured three people. He was supposed to appear in court on monday but didnt show up. Hills bond has been revoked. And theres now a 425,000 bench warrant for his arrest. A San Francisco gallery will hold a Community Forum later this month to discuss future plans for an lgbt mural thats been defaced three times in less than a month.
