Welcome to mornings on 2. Its monday, december 22nd. Im tori campbell. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning,ve. Im brian flores. Dave clark has the week off. Lets get your day started with rosemary orozco. Still foggy . Still foggy. A lot of fog there. For some, visibility a tough one. Well take a look at what is happening out there this morning. Visibility, down to even a quarter mile, eighth of a mile at times in and around oakland as well as hayward. Oakland reporting halfmile. Get into santa rosa, its 10 miles at the moment but its fluctuating. Wasnt that long ago that santa rosa was less than two miles. Napa reporting about two miles and as you get into concord an livermore, its a little bit better. Crossing the bridges, you may find it as well. Highway 1 reporting fog at times. Even a little bit of patchy drizzle. A lot of residual in place. Stable atmosphere and that stable atmosphere gonna bring us nicer weather and quieter weather for the afternoon. 57 in concord. Low 50s in novato. This has been the chilly spot. Santa rosa 47 for you, along the peninsula, 50s. 57 mountain view. Were looking at 57 sfo. If you are headed to sfo maybe picking somebody up, some of those arriving flights because of the low clouds and fog delayed by an hour. The afternoon today, under mostly cloudy skies. Upper 60s for oakland, hayward, fremont. San jose you are checking in at 66. Santa rosa you will get to 67. 63 at pacifica and again mostly sunny skies for the bay area. Were going to continue with this pattern, at least for a couple of days. I do see wet changes at least the possibility of wet changes coming our way by Christmas Eve. Good morning, sal. Good morning to you, rosemary. Were looking at a commute where traffic will be mostly normal this morning. We have a couple of major incidents, though, that well get to that are going to be tying up traffic. But here at the bay bridge toll plaza, it looks like a normal commute with about a 20, 25 minute drive into San Francisco. Weve taken an informal poll and a lot of people are working monday and tuesday. Some on wednesday. It looks like the dropoff will come later. This is a look at the san mateo bridge, the traffic here looks pretty good. As rosemary mentioned, the dense fog is out. You might see drizzle in some areas. In the south bay, we do have lighter than usual conditions here. 85280, 101 85, 280, 101, all looking pretty good as you make your way there. Workers there have the week off and so do schools. Were following developing news where a pickup truck is hanging off highway 4. Alex savidge has the details on this collision. Reporter good morning to you. The Tow Truck Company has been working hard. Theyve pulled the pickup truck off the side rail. You can well, you actually cant see because the tow truck is in the way. To show you the force of this force, here is a tire from the truck that was involved in this earlymorning accident and that pickup truck we can tell you has been successfully removed from the side rail where it was sort of dangling preteariously for quite sometime and they had to shut down Fairview Road here in this area for a time. This accident, let me show you the scene here. At about 4 30, the victims white pickup truck, the one that was dangling on the side rail, it was headed east it for some reason drifted into oncoming lanes according to the chp and sideswiped a work truck coming in the opposite direction. The victims pickup truck then rolled save times and save several times and the woman with him, the passenger, unhurt. The driver of the work truck involved in the crash, he was unhurt. The chp is trying to figure out what caused the victim, the man who was driving that truck, to veer into oncoming traffic. Well try to find the drivers background, possibly what he was doing in the last 24 hours. Hopefully the passenger can add some information to that. His whereabouts, his activities and hopefully we can piece that together and put that out in our investigation. Reporter at this point, the chp cant say whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role or if speed was a factor. Meantime, highway 4 remains closed down in both directions. Were right above Fairview Road. Its closed down at balfour road, if you know the area. Were told by the chp, tori, that this highway will remain shut down for about another halfhour. They are hoping to have it back open before 8 00 this morning. Well check back in for an update. Thank you. 7 05. Well, thats not the only traffic problem in the bay area. Theres also a big rock and mudslide in marin county on highway 101. Tara moriarty joins us live from sausalito to let us know how its impacting the morning commute and when it should be cleared. Reporter well, the traffic is backed up for quite a distance all the way to tiburon boulevard. It will be until probably 10 00 that two lanes are still gonna be closed until that time. You can see the bulldozers are busy chipping away at this rockslide boulder by boulder. They picked the rocks up and hauled them down the hill. This slide happened at 2 2 40. It knocked over a tree. The chp has shut down the two sloel lanes while caltrans crews worked to clear the rocks. The crews are gonna take a better look to make sure theres no further danger to driveers. Compared to a normal landslide, this is a rockslide. This is a portion of the hillside that fell away and came down. With it, it took away a large treate light pole. We have land we have to move, electrical and debris and trees we have to get out of here. Its pretty big. Reporter if you can take an alternate route into San Francisco, the chp is advising you to do or leave after 10 00 when all lanes are expected to reopen because right now, its bullpen from here all the way its bumper to bumper from here all the way to the split. If you take a look over here, you can ethis is the rocky hillside. Its very sheer. Engineers will have to make sure this area is stable. Theres quite a few trees. We have had rain recently. Another thing to mention, when you finally get past this area, if you need to get into San Francisco, make sure you go quickly as soon as you get by the rock slide. A lot of people are slowing down. They are taking a look. Very aggating to people aggravating for people trying to get through. We call them rubberneckers. You mentioned the rains. Do we know for sure the rains caused this slide . Reporter the chp didnt say definitely that was the case. It would seem likely. Weve had a lot of rains lately. This rock is wet to my right. I remember last week or the week before, we had flooding close by. Definitely the ground is saturated. As you know, when we have all of that rain, the trees tend to topple. They sure do. Thank you. If you are getting out, the western edge finally beginning to see a break with the snow pulling in and through areas like aid hoe and montana, it will continue to idaho and montana, it will continue to shift through the dakotas, colorado, even texas. The eastern half of the nation was quiet. Beginning to see changes. Very active for the upper midwest stretching to the eastern seaboard down into the southeast as well. It looks like it could be stormy for Christmas Eve and part of Christmas Day for the eastern half of the country. Here at home, we have a ridge of High Pressure thats taking control of our weather pattern. This is bringing us dry conditions. Very stable conditions and that also contributing and helping out with that fog this morning. Very thick. But you can see the arch beginning to shape over the pacific. Thats pushing that storm track to the north of us and so we are going to be dry today as well as tomorrow before things start to change a little bit. We have the morning fog as well as a little bit of patchy drizzle. But for the afternoon, well be mostly sunny. Well be dry. Temperatures will range in the 60s even a few upper 60s in the forecast for today. By wednesday, the clouds do begin to increase and we may have a chance of showers coming our way. I will detail that for you coming up. For now, 57 degrees outside the door in condord. 52 in novato. Thick fog reported along the east bayshore line, highway 101, the north valley locations as well. 58 for san jose. How about the afternoon . 68 for oakland today. 65 san rafael. 66 in redwood city. Get into the south bay, you are going to 66 san jose. And into the east bay, 67 this afternoon. For livermore. North bay you are looking good. 67 degrees expected for santa rosa. As we go day by day, temperatures will remain relatively warm as we get through monday, tuesday and the changes begin to move in. Its a slight chance, especially over the north bay for the evening hours on wednesday. By thursday, it begins to clear out. Notice temperatures begin to fall as well. Low 60s in the forecast for the second half of the week and into your bay area weekend, we do remain dry with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 60s. In addition to the possibility of getting a few sprinkles here, we may see snow in the sierra wednesday night as well. Thats good news for the ski resorts and skiers and snowboarders. Coming up, the giant el goreda lottery is setting a record. How this lottery is different from lotteries in the u. S. Theres magic happening, theres bubbles for snow. Theres a working waterfall. Up next, one of the most amazing christmas light displays in the bay area. The reason cost is not a big issue for the homeowner. This video shows a man named cary. He was in east australian hand out candy and smelled smoke from a nearby house. They found a man unconscious. Carie administered cpr before the ambulance arrive. That man is expected to recover. Here at ktvu weve been searching the area to see who all is decked out for the holidays. We asked you, our viewers, to help us. It wasnt my home. Not mine either. One display in rohnert park called weavers wonderland, we sent a crew there. This is weavers wonderland. 20 years of labor of love. Yes. That is a house even though it looks like disneyland. Scott weaver transforms his home into a cast well almost 300 hand crafted characters that he designs and creates all free hand. He says the key to making it magical is paying attention to every detail. Look at all of the design. It features a waterfall, a train and a bubble machine. Weaver says hes hoping the pg e bill comes in under under 1500. He says the expense doesnt bother him. I do for the love of making kids happy. Its not about money. I am not good at accepting money. I put a donation box. I never break even but i do it for the fun of doing it. Thats the way to do it. He says thousands visit the home each night. And he says 95 of the neighbors are supportive of the display. I wonder who the other 5 are. And he designs features they can put in their own yard. For example, hes created 101 dalmatians. You see one there. But only 60 of them are in his yard. He hopes kids make a game out of trying to find and count them all throughout the neighborhood. Looks like the family and i will be making a trip to rohnert park. Yes, you certainly will. For the next couple of days well feature the top homes. Come christmas, well reveal who wins. Bragging rights of having the best holiday display. Some amazing homes. You and i i just have a string of lights from the garage. I want to know when these these people get started. They usually start around september. September . Yes. They start early. 7 57, back to other news, a rockslide weve been telling you about snarling traffic in marin county. A cool one but again were going to begin to see the temperatures turn around. I will have a look at your afternoon highs. Introduce the possibility of more rain in the extended forecast. Good morning, sal. Good morning. Were looking at some slow traffic in many areas and were also looking at dense fog. Lets go to the toll plaza actually, were go going to 280. I do have good news in san jose. The Santa Clara Valley commute seems to be very nice. It looks like many of the tech campuses are taking the next few weeks off. We havent had a lot of traffic on 17 or 101. 101 is nice and light. Its not the same way everywhere. Lets go to to the bay bridge toll plaza. There is about a 20minute delay. Of course, in marin county, southbound 101 weve had a big problem with the freeway there. Its backing up into corte madera because of a rockslide blocking two lanes. Southbound 101, rodeo. Well have a report coming up. Alex savidge is live where the chp has removed a pickup truck hanging over an overpass. Reporter yes, that mangled pickup truck involved in this earlymorning crash sitting right here. You can see it on the tow truck and right now, as you can see, caltrans crews. They are sweeping up the debris from the accident trying to get highway 4 reopened to traffic as soon as possible. This pickup truck earlier this morning was dangling on that side rail you see there on the right side of your screen. This crash left one man dead e was at the wheel of this pickup truck, a white pickup heading east on highway 4 near fairview when it drifted into an oncoming lane according to the chp and collided with a work truck coming in the opposite direction. That pickup truck rolled several times. It came to rest on that side rail and the driver was declared dead by First Responders once they got here. The passenger, the woman in the passenger seat, was not injured here and the driver of the work truck involved in the crash, he was unhurt as well. Of course, after the crash, you can tell that crews had their hands full trying to carefully remove this pickup truck. The chp was certainly worried about it falling down onto the road below. It came to rest on the k rail with the rear end hanging out over fairview. As a result of that, we had to shut down the entire roadway here so that we could extricate that vehicle off the k rail. Reporter and again, the chp right now says they are unclear on exactly why the driver of that pickup veered into oncoming lanes this morning triggering this deadly crash. But they will be looking at a variety of factors trying to see if drugs or alcohol may have been involved and if speed may have been a factor in this case. As we speak right now, tori, highway 4 remains closed down in both directions. But as you can see, they just had the crews come through to sweep up the roadway. We do anticipate they will get this highway reopened here in this area to traffic very shortly. Back to you. Thank you, alex. Were also following another major traffic problem in marin county. Tara moriarty live in sausalito. Shes been there all morning long where a rockslide is making for a slow commute there. Tara . Reporter well, all lanes are supposed to reopen at 10 00 this morning but that may be delayed. Thats because crews here have made a little bit of a discovery. One that is probably not good for the commuters. Joining me live is officer andrew with the chp to explain exactly what were looking at. There appears to be a large boulder part of the rockslide. This goes beyond a boulder. Its a large chunk of the hillside that came down. As the crews were clearing the debris out, they were able to discover this massive block. Majority on the shoulder. But our concern as the rocks tend to crumble if we leave it like this, it may crumble back in the lanes. Theyve called in additional equipment, an excavator with a large jack hammer and will hopefully come in and break it up and get it out of here. Reporter how has it been for the morning commute. I know you only have two lanes . Right now we still only have two lanes open. As soon as we can get them reopened, we will. The commute has been tough. One update was 25 minutes for three miles. Were having a rough commute this morning. Caltrans has been working hard nonstop to get this all cleared out. So as soon as we can and as soon as we deem this to be safe to reopen the lanes, well do so. Reporter it happened around 2 40. Explain where we are for folks tuning in. Were southbound 101 south of alexander avenue. Were in between alexander and spencer and sausalito. Its an area known as the waldo grade. Its a windy, curvy, hilly portion of the road as you go towards San Francisco. For the time of night or Early Morning this happened, it was dark. We were very lucky nobody hit any of this. Were very thankful for that. Reporter speaking of luck, i feel like were taking our chances. Were on the side of the road. As we look up, theres this sheer rock and any moment that can come crumbling down as well. Have you been nervous . Im definitely crossing my fingers this rock is solid. Well do our best if we can see if its safe and for right now working on getting what we can cleared and well go from there. Reporter thank you for joining us. Again, were like andrew was saying, were on 101 southbound as you are making the drive into San Francisco and traffic is backed up from this stage right before the waldo tunnel all the way past tiburon boulevard. If you can avoid this area and take the Richmond Bridge, maybe instead to get into San Francisco this morning or perhaps delay, you know, your time into work, leave later this morning, that might help you out. Im tara moriarty, back to you. Ground certainly saturated. Commuters need on a need to be aware.
