When you get to the bay bridge toll plaza a backup of 15 to 20 minutes driving in. 580 continues to be very slow into livermore. As we push into the nimitz freeway some room here. A little slow. In hayward better after that through union city and fremont. Back to the desk. Thank you. We are beginning with the breaking news from san jose. We first told you about it an hour ago. Firefighters arrived and again saw those flames and the heavy smoke. And so a second alarm was called. Firefighters discovered the fire in the attic. They attacked it, knocked it down in about 25 minutes. They believe nobody was on School Property at the time. At this point firefighters are waiting for investigators to come here to determine a cause. They dont think its suspicious. Our preliminary investigation shows that nothing seems suspicious. Nothing seems we didnt see any tagging on the walls or any vandalism. Still an educational facility requires extensive investigation. So we will be investigating the cause of this fire. Reporter i was told by Maintenance Person who works at the school and happened to see the fire video on the news that this classroom here was used by seventh and eighth graders. Computers were used inside this classroom. I asked him if the principal was on his way. He said administrators should be coming soon. Using the amber alert system to help track down hitandrun drivers. This is live along interstate 80. A neat idea, katie . Reporter people we are talking to seemed to think so. Think about how many eyes are on the interstate. There are hundreds of thousands of people who drive california highways and the yellow alert will work like an amber alert utilizing the existing billboard. It could help chp find people suspected of hitandruns. Here is a picture of what the yellow alert sign would look like following a serious injury or fatal hitandrun collision. Chp would put out information with a vehicles make and model and license plate number. An assemblyman out of burbank is pushing the bill following a hitandrun collision where a cyclist was trapped under a van and dragged is 600 feet to a driveway onramp. Drivers we have talked to are behind the idea of a yellow alert. I think its a very good idea, yeah, because other people can see on the road and you can pull off to the side of the road, use your cellphone and call 911 if you see it or spot it. Reporter backers of the bill say the yellow alerts would be sent out only if there is specific vehicle information. The amber alert system started in 1996 following the abduction of a girl from texas. So far this year the chp has called for 10 amber alerts. Last year it was used a dozen times. The yellow alert bill has until the end of august to pass committee. So at this point its unclear how often it would be used. But there are other alerts utilized through the system. The whether or not alert for Law Enforcement, if a Law Enforcement is injured. There is also a silver alert for elderly. And of course the amber alert for missing children, which as we know has proven quite effective. So this yellow alert could be just another tool for chp. Live near berkeley. It happened a couple of hours ago at Davis Intermediate School on eden view drive. Ktvus janine de la vega is there talking to both firefighters and school officials. Good morning, janine. Reporter were expecting an investigator to arrive here at the School Campus in the next 30 minutes. They will be taking a close look at the roof of this building at Davis Middle School because the fire appeared to have started in the attic area. We are told by the Oak Grove School district that they will have it fix bid the time School Begins in august. This is video showing the smoke billowing out from the middle school on edenview, which is off of monterey highway. It started at 5 30 this morning and were told that it was spotted by a custodian on the way to work here. Firefighters arrived and called in a second alarm and started attacking the fire in the attic. They were able to knock it down in about 25 minutes. A fire captain says because the fire happened on a School Campus they will take a close look to see if this was arson and look for signs of vandalism and graffiti at the school. The superintendent suspects that that may be the case. We had a very small incident on another part of our campus earlier this year which was a small trash fire. But one of the things that well be doing is doing an assessment of our perimeter and access to our roofs. Reporter now, here is video of inside the classroom. Not too much damage that you see there. There is a hole in the ceiling because, of course, that was where the fire started on the roof. But firefighters were able to tarp the furniture inside, saving that for the school. Now, this fire, where it happened in this building, this wasnt used all summer long. Thats what were being told by the school district, that there is a Summer Program happening right now on the other side of campus. So there will be students here. But theyre going to be going on a field trip at least while this investigation is happening. Right now, as im talking, theyre actually playing an announcement to let the people who are coming on to campus right now know why the firefighters are here. Again an investigator is expected to show up. They havent ruled out any possibilities. At first they said it didnt appear to be suspicious. We just dont know the cause yet. Reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. Thank you, janine. Police are involving the electrocution at a warehouse. It happened on west grand avenue. Law enforcement here in california may have a new tool soon. Ktvus katie uteis live along interstate 280 to explain how yellow alert would use a statewide system already in place. Reporter good morning, dave. On our drive from the east bay to San Francisco we saw several of those electronic billboards along our way. You can imagine the amount of eyes that see those billboards. You have often seen them run amber alerts. Yellow alerts would work the same way. Let me show you a picture of what the yellow alert sign would look like. Following a serious injury or fatal hitandrun collision chp would put out information about a vehicles make and model and license plate man. A family man out of burbank is push the bill following a hitandrun collision where a cyclist was trapped under a van and dragged 600 feet on to an onramp. The cyclist lost his leg and the driver was never caught. Drivers we talked to are behind the idea of an yellow alert. I absolutely Pay Attention to the amber alert system. And if it were to report, you know, other issues of interest to us, i think its a good idea. Reporter backers of Assembly Bill 47 say the alerts would be sent only if there is specific information available. The amber alert system started in 1996 following the abduction of a first lady from texas. So far this year the chp has called for six amber alerts, resulting in ten victims recovered. The yellow alert bill has until the end of august to pass committee. Back out here live, you can imagine what an effective tool this would be with the amount of eyes on the road looking out for just one suspect vehicle. There is already a blue alert for Law Enforcement. Thats if a Law Enforcement officer is attacked. There is a silver alert for elderly, if elderly people are missing and the word needs to get out. Of course, the amber alert for missing children. So the yellow alert would be yet another tool for chp to use. Live in San Francisco, katie utehs. Thank you, katie. The san mateo bridge, this is not one of the cases. We have normal traffic here, which means you will see a lot of slowing before you make it on to the bridge. Once you make it to the bridge its about a 10 to 15minute drive across the span to the peninsula. I want to show you that slow traffic on the east bay im talking about southbound 880. You see the road sensors here are beginning to slow southbound after 238 heading down. We also can see the traffic on the peninsula when you get other there. On southbound 101 its slow from about the end of burlingame through san mateo and more slow traffic in palo alto. Lets go to steve. Thank you. A little bit of fog kind of holding on here. That tells us it usually doesnt get hot on this date. But some of that fog will keep some areas near the coast in the 60s. Its shallow and its going to burn off as well. We have some patchy low clouds around. The afternoon will be warmer. Tomorrow looks hot. We will be back into some 100degree temps tomorrow. Not today. And one of the people who was struck by gunfire was at the time strapping two small children into the back seat of this car. Relatives drove those two victims to the hospital and both of them, the teenager and the man, are expected to survive. Apparently, the older individual, the 26yearold, was helping put the children in the car when the gunfire erupted. The 16yearold was entering the vehicle on the right front passengers side when he was struck in the upper right thigh. Reporter police arent sure what prompted this shooting and no one there at that house has any idea why they would be targeted, according to investigators.
