Well give you an upclose look at some of the most important pieces that keep the bridge strong. A sneak peek deep inside the new eastern span of the bay bridge. Its where you will find a mixture of cables and connectors. While tom vacar was getting a tour of the leaks on the bay bridge, caltrans engineers showed him a critical piece that keeps the bridge strong. Deep inside the new eastern span of the bay bridge we couldnt help but notice what initially appeared to be huge thick pipes. They are pipes but carry no liquids. According to bridge engineer bill casey theyre state of the art earthquake devices that give the bridge much of its capability to resist the largest earthquake expected in 1500 years. This keeps the two different bridges together and its hinge piping, and the two sides, this is 60 feet long. Theres 30 feet inside one bridge, 30 feet inside the other bridge. Between the steel super structure and the concrete causeway, the exposed and removable middle parts of the pipes are deliberately designed to crumple protecting other parts of the bridge that might be hard or impossible to replace. All the damage will be taken here and we can replace this little piece in the middle and put the bridge back in service. Through these pipes many critical cables carrying electricity communications and data run the entire length of the bridge, but those cables have been installed with a lot of extra slack. So in the event of a truly epic earthquake as the bridge expands and contracts the cables will not be stretched or snapped. That will maintain essential Services Enabling the bridge to be put back into service much more quickly. Tom vacar ktvu channel 2 news.
