This mornings drive is looking good. We are checking into a possible car fire on westbound 24 at Pleasant Hill road. Well check in on that and get back to you. We are starting with developing news from santa clara. At least one person is hurt in an Early Morning house fire. This started a couple blocks away from the 49ers new stadium. Janine de la vega is joining us live from santa clara to tell us some quick thinking neighbors may have prevented a tragedy. Reporter dave, the fire is out but you can see the flames just devastated this home. Right now firefighters are still spraying it down to make sure that they get out all the hot spots. We are told the people who lived in this home they are being interviewed off site right now but fire investigators. When firefighters arrived to the house at 1 20 this morning, flames were shooting from the garage and the second floor. The four people who lived there had been sleeping when the fire started, but they did manage to get out before fire crews arrived. The fire grew to two alarms and took about 40 minutes to knock it down. They were concerned about the adjacent home catching fire and those residents ended up being evacuated. Other neighbors we spoke to say when the fire first started, they were trying to help alert the residents inside. We didnt go to the house. We were throwing racks from the street. We were in our neighbors yard trying to find rocks that were big enough. But the fire spread pretty fast that we didnt want to get too close. Reporter out of the four people who were able to escape this fire, a woman was burned. We are told it was minor injuries but she was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Right now the investigation is about to begin here. They are in the overhaul stages. Mopping up this fire. They do not know how it started. What they do know is at least it started in the house. There was a car parked in the driveway and that had caught fire and i asked if it started outside or inside. So they do know it was inside. We also know this home was for sale. Not sure how long the people inside were living there. Were told right now the people who escaped this fire are getting a lot of support from the neighbors here. But they are okay. Reporting live from Santa Clara Janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. Time is 5 04. We have new information about a deadly overnight crash on highway 85 in san jose. The chp says they have made an arrest in this case and that intoxication and speed appear to have been factors in the crash. The chp says the man was driving a nissan max ma. He rear ended a volkswagen beatle. The driver of the beatle was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries. The investigation under way in an officer involved shooting in vacaville. Our cameras were on the scene just moments after this mornings gunfire. Investigators say the suspect was wounded during a shootout with officers after he allegedly rammed two patrol cars. The suspect is now in the hospital. His condition is not known. The Police Officers were not hurt. San Francisco Police say two people were wounded in a shooting in the citys potrero hill neighborhood. That happened last night right near interstate 280. It appears the two victims suffered several gunshot wounds. Its still not clear what led up to that gunfire. Time is 5 05. We are just a couple days away from super bowl xlviii. They are getting a crash course on how to host americas biggest sporting event. The head of the Host Committee says its a similar situation in new york this year where the game is being played across the river in new jersey but all the parties are in manhattan. The Northern Region reports just 6 of normal. The Central Region reports 15 . The Southern Region 14 . With the mountain snow levels dangerously low and little rain here in the valley, the governor is again pleading with all of us to save water. Governor brown is asking all of us to turn off the water when you brush your teeth. And dont flush the toilet any more than necessary. Last year was californias driest calendar year since records have been kept. Mean tile a trivalley Water Company is asking 200,000 customers to voluntarily reduce water use because of the drought. East bay mud wants customers in pleasanton, dublin, san ramon to match the governors request to cut back on water use by 20 . East bay mud is due to set its conservation goals on february 11th. Next week california fish and wildlife officials may move to close the Russian River to fishing because of the drought. That is according to the press democrat. If that is approved, it would ban fishermen down the river between genre to between jenner to just north of ukiah. This morning the search continues for a patient who walked out of San Francisco general hospital. Police say 34yearold valerie gates was wearing a bandage around her neck when she left the hospital after surgery. She was wearing a green jacket and burgundy pants. Gates is homeless and spends a lot of time in the tenderloin area. 57yearold patient Lynn Spalding was found dead in a hospital stairwell 17 days after she was reported missing. They say february is the peak of the flu season and it is not unusual for a second wave top hit in march or april. Toyota issued an order to its dealerships stop selling some of toyotas top brands. This comes as the company is trying to work out a way to replace seats that are not up to federal safety standards. 2013 and 2014 camry, avlon, and tacoma, and the tundra have heated seats and they are all effected in this order. Toyota says there has been no reports of any fires or injuries and customers are still saying they are confident their vehicles are safe. I think it is so great. Ktvu news has learned the Oakland Police department has made a big policy shift when it comes to high speed chases in oakland. Police officers now have orders not to get involved in a car chase unless it involves a Violent Crime or a gun. Interim police chief shawn says the change is a response to disturbing statistics. Chasing a stolen car led to a crash more than a third of the time. You know we are endangering the community at that point to recover somebodys stolen property. Only to return it to them in damaged condition. It is just not worth the risk. The new policy modeled after similar rules for Police Officers in san jose. A jury refused to convict a woman that was arrested for drunk driving saying she is the victim. Its a one way street. That is after she and her boyfriend had come to the city for a 49ers game. The Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office releasing images of a man they say stole copper wiring from a san jose vta station. Tara moriarty is there at the station. She is gathering more information. Tara will have a live report coming up in just a couple minutes. Police in richmond revealing more details about a case that is drawing comparisons to the story of jaycee dugard. A woman spent 15 years being sexually abused and held prisoner at the home of a family member. The defendant is 51yearold raul ochoa. Officers accuse him of holding the girl captive since she was 12. Sexually assaulting her two to three times a week. The woman was finally able to escape in august of 2012 when she was 27 years old. The psychological abuse and physical abuse, the sexual abuse kept her in a mentality that she is still considered to be just a child. Police say the victim like jaycee dugard Never Attended School and imprisoned in a backyard shed. Ochoa has pleaded guilty to several sex crimes against a minor. And he is expected to spend 22 years in prison. Time is 5 34. As we mentioned moments ago the Sheriffs Office releasing images of a man they say was stealing copper wiring from a vta station. Not a lot of people here. It is easy to see how someone could get away with stealing a stash of copper. They were able to use surveillance cameras to snag some images. A man wearing a blue jacket, khaki participants, and black shirt stole around 10,000 worth of copper wiring. They have also released an image of this car. Time is 5 35. San Francisco Police arrested a man who they say was seen with a crowd of people vandalizing a muni bus. He has been booked on charges of vandalism. It was surrounded by a group of people. The surveillance camera on the bus showed them spraying graffiti and breaking windows. They are still searching for more of the vandalism suspects. The chase ended when the suspects car hit an suv in the bay view district. The impact of the suv flipped on to its side. Police say they found drugs in the suspects car. Both of the drivers were hospitalized with nonlife threatening injuries. Uc Berkeley Police say there is a spill of potentially dangerous chemicals but it wont effect any classes on campus this morning. It mapped about it happened about 8 00 last night in cals chemistry building. Investigators say two litters of hydrochloric acid spilled on the floor and the building was evacuated. They had the spill cleaned up a little before midnight and no one was hurt. Final preparations under way for sundays super bowl in new jersey. The Obama Administration seeking the Death Penalty against the lone surviving suspect. 20yearold Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother planted two bombs near the finish line. Three people were killed, 260 were injured. Now one of those wounded in the boston bombings was 12yearold aaron hern of martinez. He was near the finish line waiting for his mother. Kathryn says she has no energy to feel anything about tsarnaev. Instead she is focusing all of her attention on her family. The former boyfriend of amanda knox was captured in italy trying to escape that country. Now amanda knox is in seattle. She said she was frightened and saddened by what she called an unjust verdict. Her former boyfriend was given a 25 year sentence. But hours later he was captured apparently trying to sneak out of italy. The man accused in the deadly colorado Movie Theater shooting rampage that will be back in court today. The issue is whether crime scene experts will be able to testify at the trial. The reconstruction techniques are not reliable. Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. He is charged with killing 12 people and injuring 70 others at a Movie Theater in aurora, colorado back in 2012. Prosecutors want the Death Penalty. Back in california max wade is waking up at a san quentin prison cell this morning. The teenager was convicted last october of pulling alongside a pickup truck and firing shots into it several times. He was convicted of attempted murder as well as stealing a lamborghini belonging to celebrity chef guy. Max wade was given a life sentence. He will spend at least the next 90 days at san joaquin tip. He has been placed in the high security part of the prison. Dogs are getting the care they need to prepare them for new homes. The Sonoma Humane Society just spayed and neutered some of the dogs. They were rescued last week from a private breeder in redding. Veterinarians say the dogs were kept in small cages and sheds. Many of the animals suffered ear infections, lice, and severe dental disease. The poodle mix puppy that was saved from a recycling center Conveyor Belt will be able to see her rescuers every day from now on. Patricia says the first pictures of the puppy made her sad but she is happy now. People in the east bay got a chance to hear about a proposal to turn a section of interstate 680 into a toll road. Now plans call for lanes between san ramon and walnut creek to be turned into combination hov and toll lanes called express lanes. At a presentation in san ramon, transportation officials announced the era of building freeways is over and it is now time to make the roads that are already in place operate more efficiently. The express lanes would be free for the same cars currently allowed in hov lanes but solo drivers would be charged. Similar express lane is in use further south of 680. Time is 5 55. In a couple hours from now san jose arch they will hold a ceremony for polina edmonds. Polina is the 15yearold figure skater heading for the Winter Olympics in sochi. Last night she was the center of attention at a party. Her friends say she works hard in the classroom and out on the ice.
