Cameras caught a vicious attack on a homeless man in San Francisco. Now police want your help in catching the man who did it. Paul chambers is in San Francisco this morning and paul, this is just graphic video. Hard to watch. Reporter that is correct, pam. I will tell you everyone who knew the man said he was very friendly including police. The man was attacked right here in this area. I heard the noise of a thunk and that was the pipe hitting the guys head. Reporter this video is very brutal. The man was sitting in his surge spot on a bucket in larkin street when the man in a blue shirt appears and pulls out what appears to be a pipe. He strikes the victim hitting him so hard the man goes limp as the pipe flies out of the suspects hand. From there the suspect picks up the pipe and walks down the street passing people and never looking back. Police say the victim got more than 508 stitches in his hand. A Business Owner in the area says although this is a disturbing incident, things like this happens all the time. [ inaudible ] this place is really getting worse here. Reporter heres another look at the suspect. He is 2030 years of age. About 510 tall with dark hair. If caught the suspect is facing attempted murder charges. Pam. Thank you, paul. Hopefully they find this person. 6 03 is the time. San francisco firefighterrers say an elderly man was killed in an apartment fire. They received an emergency call about a fire right near San Francisco street at 10 00 p. M. The university crews on scene saw heavy smoke coming from a third floor apartment. They made their lead into the building at the center stairwell. Had smoke conditions in the hallway. Extinguished the fire. Firefighters say they pulled out the elderly man from the apartment. He was unconscious and on the floor near a couch with oxygen tanks nearby. Paramedics were not able to revive him. A second elderly person in the apartment was hurt but should be okay. The building did have fire alarms but no Sprinkler System and the cause of that fire is still not known. This is the latest deadly fire in San Francisco this year. Other cases include a father and 13yearold girl who were killed last month when their Mission District department went up in flames. The teenager was in the hospital for a week before she died from her injuries. In january a man died in that massive Apartment Building fire. And concerns are now rising about building safety and Fire Department responses in the neighborhood. The city is also trying to increase building inspections. San Francisco Police chief greg suhr plans disciplinary action against several Police Officers accused of exchanging racist and homophobic Text Messages. Three officers will be suspended and chief sur will tell us if more officers will be punished. One has already resigned. The District Attorney and public defender will review ten years of cases involving those officers to see if there is evidence of racial bias. Former Santa Clara County supervisor will find out if he will go to jail for election fraud. He will be sentenced after pleading no contest to one felony count involving a Deceptive Campaign mailer. Shirakawa admitted he created a campaign flier that helped a friend win a San Jose Council election by insinuating the opponent was a communist sympathizer. Shirakawa will receive Community Service and not jail time if he accepted responsibility for the crime. Now that Governor Brown has ordered mandatory water restrictions, everyone is trying to figure out how to do their part. Local Hardware Store says they sell a lot of devices that can help them reduce flow use. Low flow toilets. I say we become more refined with water saving. Its called keep savings ca. California is in the fourth year of a drought. A group in San Francisco that calls themselves friends of dolores park they plan a major trash cleanup at the park tomorrow. On their Facebook Page the creator of the group says if people dont start cleaning up after themselves, they wont be allowed into the park. He also starred a trash photo bomb movement. Ge appliance park is a large building. Thousands of appliances are made and manufactured there. From dishwashers to military engines there. Has reached an agreement on Irans Nuclear program. President obama praised the agreement. Iran is agreeing to limit its Nuclear Program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. But the deal has its critics including many republicans in congress. If Congress Kills this deal not based on expert analysis and without offering any reasonable alternative then its the United States blamed. Isa sailor lost at sea for 66 days was found alive. This is off the coast of north carolina. The crew of that ship rescued him yesterday. He was spotted floating on a capsized sailboat and here he is walking already. He went out fishing back in january but somehow his boat lost its mass and capsized. The coast guard said he fished with a net he collected rainwater and rationed his food to stay alive. Now hes got an injured shoulder. He was dehydrated but they say otherwise hes okay. Seismologists got an early heads up before the series of earthquakes hit the bay area wednesday and thursday. Rob roth reports on the experts to expand an Early Warning system throughout california. Reporter the earthquake Early Warning system detected the quake would reach berkeley a second and a half after it struck san ramon. Somebody can within a second or two drop cover and hold on and protect their own selves. That is because the epicenter of that quake was farther away than the one in san ramon. And that is enough teem to stop a bart train. The earthquake Early Warning system is is not earthquake prediction. It is watching an earthquake begin and trying to send a signal out to people in the effected areas faster than the earthquake can get to them. Reporter many of the Response Teams currently receive the alerts but seismologists are working to expand to a public earthquake warning system. That will take about 80 million over five years. They are asking congress, state lawmakers, and private parties to chip in. Other parts of the state besides the bay area have very sparse coverage. The investigation is still going on and you witnessed anything San Francisco police want to hear from you. President obama is checking another state off his list. The president arrived in utah last night. He is set to make a speech on the there later today. It is the first time president obama has visited the beehive state as president. Bush got to all 50 states during their presidency. A mother in Southern California delivered her baby in a very unusual spot. She was two days over her due date and in labor when she decided to go to a courtroom to make a payment. While she was there, the contractions started. 15 minutes apart. Before she knew it she gave birth to that beautiful little baby boy in the hallway of the courthouse thanks to the help of a sheriffs deputy. One contraction where you know its about to happen hit me and i went down to my knees and he was coming. And i put my hands down there and the babys head comes out and the rest of the body slid into my hands. The baby is grinning right there. People cheered as the little bay boy boy came into the world. It only lasts around 30s and 40s for most. It will be slightly warmer. 60s and low to mid 70s. But after today it will be more 50s and 60s as we head toward the weekend and early next week. But now we are sold out all the way out to the maze. Traffic is bayly moving unless you are in the car pool lane. So please allow yourself extra time. This will take a little bit to thin out. The only good thing we have is that its expected to be lighter than usual today. This might thin out in the next hour or so. But if youre trying to get to the city using your car, it will be a bad one for now. All right lets talk about the san mateo bridge. Could be decent alternate for you heading out to the high rise and over to the peninsula that way. Dumbarton bridge looks lighter than usual. A brutal attack caught on camera in San Francisco. Now police are asking for the publics help to find the attacker. Paul chambers is in San Francisco this morning talking about the weapon used and the serious, serious injuries to the victims. Police are searching for answers this morning after a man was found shot to death in hayward. The shooting happened shortly before 10 00 last night on jefferson street when Police Arrived they found 22yearold William Pacheco with a gunshot wound to the face. No arrests have been made. More than 8,000 people paid tribute to San Jose Police officer Michael Johnson who was killed in the line of duty. Hearse carrying officer johnsons casket led the presession. There fellow officers from around the bay area and the nation saluted as it passed underneath a giant American Flag hanging from a ladder truck. Now inside the service, there were tears, there was laughter, speaker shared stories about officer johnson who included his older sister jamie. Whenever we played cops and robbers as kids, he always insisted on being the cops and i had to be the bad guy. Jamie thanked the San Jose Police department and the community for their support. In front of the stage was office johnsons casket. It was draped with the American Flag. There was also a photo tribute showing officer johnson with his wife, his parents, and sister and a neat and a nephew. Mike loved his pamly with his entire heart and he expressed his love by being present. Also speaking yesterday one of officer johnsons academy classmates. Officer dave salise. Noticed that the sap center is usually a place where you cheered and saluted your athletes. He said officers johnson deserved his own standing ovation. That standing ovation lasted for about a minute. Yesterdays Memorial Service was followed by a private burial at the oak hill funeral home in Memorial Park in san jose. Thousands of Police Officers from all over the country came to salute their fallen brother. Our ktvu crews saw officers from as far away as new york, dallas, chicago. They came from all over the state of california to pay their respects. I hope that the San Jose Police department is able to start their healing process once they lay their brother to rest. Marathon two years ago at that very same venue the santa cruz Police Department mourned the death of two of their own also killed in the line of duty. Investigators say the black box data recorder on the germanwings plane that crashed in the french alps shows the co pilot accelerated the plane as it plunged toward the mountains. The recorder shows the copilot put the plane into a decent and then repeatedly adjusted the auto pilot to speed it up. Prosecutors say Andreas Lubitz locked the pilot out of the. Gunman with the alshabab terror group went into the university at dawn yesterday when most of the Muslim Students were in a mosque. They went into dorms asking who was a christian and who was muslim and they shot and killed any christians on the spot. San Francisco Police are searching for a female hit and run driver whop hit three cyclists and two cars. One of the cars ended up crashing into a garage near scott and fell street yesterday. One of the cyclists was thrown 20 feet and suffered serious injuries. The other two were treated at the scene. A neighbor says he saw the whole thing. Hit a white car. Ran into the gray car which ran into the house which pinned two bicyclists over to the left and one guy over to the right. People tried to tell the driver to stop but she sped off in her black jeep cherokee. Officers say they do have her license plate number so its likely a matter of time before they find her. Police in daly city hope you can help them track down two men accused of attacking and robbing a taxi driver. Heres surveillance images of the suspects. The cab driver said he picked up two men. He later is dropped them off. As the terror the man punched him and stole all of his money. The port of oakland says operations are nearly back to normal after a labor dispute. A backlog of ships is now gone. Oakland could still experience some delays as a Ripple Effect from Southern California ports where there is still congestion. A tentative deal reached in february between shippers and dock workers still needs to be ratified by the union. The latest unemployment numbers were released and were notioning a change. The house is being remodeled to add a second story to to it. Neighbors rushed over and pulled him to safety and he didnt have a scratch on him. Mr. Powell says the television created a space from keeping him from being crushed. Its been a rough couple of days for him. Yesterday i got bit by a pit bull. Today a house fell on me. Mr. Powell said the owner let him stay there to keep an eye on the house while it was being remodeled. Now of course he has to find a new place to stay. Such an incredible story. We had an earlier motorcycle accident and im very happy to say that the motorcyclist even though he dumped his bike near Treasure Island did not suffer major injuries. Able to get up and walk out. But the lanes were blocked for a bit. They did send medic and fire for a bit. The toll plaza did get pretty heavy. It was light until that crash happened about almost an hour ago. Not quite. But now its very heavy. Its going to take awhile for this to unwind. Either take a car pool if you can. Take bart. Or just wait a bit for this bridge traffic to get a little bit better. If youre driving to the san mateo bridge perhaps you want to use an alternate route. Weve had a couple crashes on westbound 580. Still not causing any big delays.
