These officers would have been perfectly justified in shooting this individual, but they didnt. They embraced the training, the new mantra of trying to make sure that not just the officers make it home tonight, but everyone does. Now we have a local astronomer here for chabot space and Science Center. We are here to talk about the Perseid Meteor Shower. Can you describe whats happening . Sure. A comet called swifttuttle. It orbits around the sun every 133 years. As it orbits it leaves behind a trail of debris. These are pebbles and little rocks and grains of sand. And those pebbles and particles continue in orbit, the same orbit as the comet. And every year the earth passes through that stream of particles and we see that as a meteor shower. We are going to get one this year early in the morning on the 12th. And it may be a bigger meteor shower than typical because the planet jupiter in 2014 tugged on the stream of particles and caused it to alter its orbit just a little bit. So we might get a little bit more than the usual number of meteors. Reporter i had a question about that. You are seeing some estimates of 100 to 200 meteors per hour. That wont be the case if you are watching from the bay area . No. Its going to be far fewer in the bay area. It will be maybe 40 or 50 an hour. You have to get up into the mountains where its dark, away from the city lights, away from the fog, and you can see a lot more meteors. Around here we will see 50, 60 an hour. Reporter you can come here to watch. You just have to look up and look in the direction, right, and get way from the city lights and fog . Exactly. If you go out and find yourself a dark location, look to the northeastern sky after midnight, say 1 or 2 00 in the morning, thats the optimum time to be watching meteors. Reporter thank you so much for the tips. Appreciate it. Guys, free admission. Just look up tonight. Get away from the city lights and the fog and it should be a great show if you can see the meteors.
