Paul shows us how the latest town hall meeting tackled sensitive issues such as race, gender and Mental Health. Ive been involved in many, many, many shootings. During the officerinvolved shooting portion of the forum, civil rights attorney burr was questioning. Just because a person has a knife who is mentally impaired or not is not a death warrant. We have been placing a sig significant emphasis on making sure our officers have crisis enter vengs training. Intervention training. Were dealing with mental illness, de escalation. How do you deal with the the issues . Do you de escalate the process soon enough . Zo the do the officers do the officers understand you dont have to use force . The officers need to be trained on Mental Health issues. Theyre the first responders. We have 300 of our Staff Members who are specially trained and our goal is to get as many as possible. As the conversation continues, one question stood out. A little boy from oakland asked members of the panel are you racist . Not every cop is racist. Most of us are not. I am not. The topic of race has come come up in all of the forums. Some say the diversity on it is the force re on the force reflects negatively on the communities. Theyre talking about how they plan to make it more diverse. Our police force is majority majorityminority. 60 of our officers belong to minority groups. We want to establish a leadership, start at the top. Do we reflect our community . And so were working toward that. I dont think there is a chief in the room that doesnt want the most Diverse Workforce that represents the community. Id also add that you also want a workforce that shares the vision of the community. A workforce that people in the community feel a connection to. Alameda connection District Attorney says the demographics of her office have changed drastically over the years since taking office in 2009. She says a more diverse staff woshgz for everyone. Works well for everyone. When someone comes in, having been a victim of crime, they can see someone that looks familiar or with whom they can relate. How many of your Police Officers reside in the city that you are representives of . I believe in the 90th percentile is the number of officers that do not live in oakland. Thats a very high percentage. I live in oakland. I understand why a lot of people dont live in oakland, because they cant afford to live in oakland. About 70 of our employees are Alameda County residents. 25 of our department lives between 0 and 10 miles away. About 25 , about a quarter of our officers live in richmond. Were trying to get the most highly qualified officers that we possibly can. And if i have an officer that i know is going to serve all of you, you know, if they live 50 miles away, ill take it. Because recruiting is extremely challenging right now. What are you doing for your actual recruiting efforts in the community . I want to recruit in non traditional arenas. I want people who come from different backgrounds and think differently to join our department. We have a pipeline to justice. And so every summer we have about 20 college kids who come and work in different parts of the dea office that were recruiting from. Everybody at rpd is a recruiter. We have a recruiting team, but everybody recruits. What were doing at our Police Department is trying to target the youth of our community. , specifically those at the high schools community, specifically those at the high schools. I really try to make an effort to reach out. I commended you for what youre doing at schools, but that doesnt mean when i walk home and i see our car my heart doesnt race. In the highly anticipated rulings, the california Supreme Court thursday upheld a measure designed to speed up Death Penalty cases. A legal cite started in november after 51 of california voters passed prop 66, which limits Court Appeals to five years for condemned inmates. Thursday the divide at the Supreme Court upheld the measure measure, but acknowledged the medline is advisory the deadline is advisory not mandatory. It still is a message to every attorney and every judge in the state that the will of the people is that these cases move forward. Another supporter said today the courts restored justice to california for me and so many other families of the victims of the worst murders imaginable. The end of our nightmare is in sight. California has 748 inmates on death row. 13 been executed since 1978, the last in 2006. Californias condemned inmates are more likely to zie of die and a of Natural Causes than lethal injection. The biggest difference the ruling makes is for the 20 inmates currently on death row whose appeals are completed. For these 20, it means we can move forward where we havent been able to move forward for 11 years. If were moving quickly through the process, we may not have an opportunity to find the correct evidence and an innocent person may be executed.
