Monday night around 7 30. Officials say that is when the train traveling 35 miles an hour in a 40 Miles Per Hour zone collided with a tree and mud slide that was on the track. That caused two of the five cars to derail. When the train stopped you could see mud pretty much covering half of the wheels of several railcars there. 9 people injured with four in serious condition. This morning crews used cranes to remove the other derailed car. A similar tactic that they used before. Crews have been working in the hillside where the mud may have come from and removed other debris on the tracks. U. S. Congressman said thank you to the crews and to see the damage firsthand. It looks like something out of a movie when you look at the scene and when i heard a train derail in the canyon, i thought we would be hearing of massive loss of life. Now thankfully it didnt happen. 200 people walked away from the Train Derailment. That is the hillside where the tree came down from at that time. Ace, i spoke to a spokesperson that they are confident that a tree and mud caused the accident. They believe it happened at 6 30 an affluenza the accident because at 6 30 they had a train going through the same area at that time. Now coming up at 6 00 you will whatever from representative congressman Eric Swalwell to explain Nothing Happened to this one and no fatalities was a miracle. Rob roth with details about a man that was in the car that went off the tracks. The man is sharing details about the husk accident and exclusive pictures that might explain how everyone managed to get out alive. The man was disoriented after the train flipped over and a man got the video on his cell phone as he and passengers were scrambling to escape. It was nervewracking because you are on the side of the train and you dont want to step on the windows. Because you think you are going to go through the windows. Sealy says the force of the accident was so violent his land top went flying across the train car. After his nervousness and fear subsided he said everyone including injured Staff Members jump up and helped one another. Everyone stepped up and just really did their part. One lady dislocated her knee. One of the injured gentleman had cracked his ribs and lay and laying there. The man with broken ribs was in great pain but picked himself up and escaped. Sealy is so grateful he survived this terrifying ordeal and says it wont stop him from commuting on the ace train. That really was something hearing from him. Rob, thank you. A big piece to the smud slide is the rain. How much rain are we talking . Pretty much widespread. The entire bay area got two to five inches of rain. Here is the deal in the bay area. The way that many of the hills are set up there is a clay that underlies the scope and what happens when you get saturation like you do when you get 6 or 7 inches of rain, that clay begins to swell up and when it swells up it is slippery. Keba asked how much. You can find a half foot in some places and more in others. The story in this area in the east bay hills and most of the bay area top graphfy. The hills have that clay and the ability to slide when they hit saturation points. The showers going to the next few days are going to ramp up and thats what happens too. 100 of rainfall average into february for many bay area cities. We are going to see a lot more rain as we go into the bay area weekend. And beyond and thats going to do further saturation and we have the potential to see further mudslides. If you saw the shot cristina shot a wooded hillside. Usually it is hillsides grazed by cattle and water in the clay. This is more of a wooded area. You dont expect to see that with roots in the ground but it is steep. Bottom line when we get wet, things start to move in the bay area. All right. Bill, after this derailment, we got to wondering who makes sure that tracks are clear and who is responsible for inspecting them. Cristina rendon live above the scene in sky fox with that part of the story. Reporter keba and frank we found out it was less than 24 hours ago that track of rail had been inspected and crews did not find anything wrong whatsoever so this is a surprise. Taking a look at the images. The train is being towed out. An orange or yellow piece of equipment towing it and taking the train out. If you look a little to the left i want us to pan to the left because you can see the rectangle brown square there. Thats where the mudslide happened and where the tree fell so you can see there was a lot of damage done here but clearly Union Pacific is saying they had no idea that any of this was going to happen. One hour before the ace train derailed another ace train passed through the area with no problem and we found out the tracks in niles canyon with inspected at five a. M. Monday because of a weather alert that so no issue. If we knew that this mudslide was going to occur, i guarantee that there would have been measures in place to ensure that either the train would go slow are than it was supposed to or not pass through there at all. Union Pacific Railroad has numerous crews and rails inspected twice a week with various technology and some things are just unpredictable. Union pacific has a robust track Inspection Program in california more than any other state. We exceed fair regulations in terms of what is required. This stretch of rail between san jose and stockton services one to three trains and 8 ace trains carrying 2700 people and why Union Pacific invests billions in the infrastructure to keep people safe. We are confident that the rail is safe and we will continue to follow those strict regulations. And taking another live look from sky fox, you can see crews are working to tow that last derailed car back to the rest of the train so they can get it out of there safely and making sure that everything with that rail is in perfect shape and condition so that they can get other trains rolling through there. We were told that some concrete ties need to be changed out and others need to be replaced but no damage to the Railroad Tracks and thats good news because if they get this replaced they can get the ace trains running back through to get service back up and running to normal. It sound like cristina repairing it wont be too hard but the cleanup, thats the process. Any idea when Train Service will be resumed considering there is more rain around the corner . Right. We dont have a word on when Train Service will resume for ace. We do know once they make the repairs it could be within a day but we dont mow when the service will resume. Cristina rendon live. Ayres stands for altamonte corridor express. Service began in 1998, every day ace runs four trains westbound in the morning and four trains eastbound in the afternoon. The service carries more than 1 million passengers each year. There was also a very close call for our reporter alex savidge this morning as he was out covering that Train Derailment, he easily could have been killed. Watch what happens. Confusing situation. Thats alex savidge getting out of the way of an outofcontrol car. Coming up in 15 minutes. You will see his emotional react and how he called for his photographer to come out from behind the camera so alex could thank him on the air for telling him to get out of the way in the knick of time. You have heard of state of emergencies declared after a Natural Disaster but we may have a new reason. Why a San Francisco supervisor is calling for a state of emergency on homelessness. Plus video of an unbelievable rescue in monterey coming up. We will talk to the ch p officer that pull these two young kids out of a burning car. The rear exhibition night game. The Cincinnati Reds visit scottsdale and fans coming in. Perfect weather for a ball game and i will get you updated news on the health of hunter pence. Tracking more rainfall. Getting the break but as you know more rain headed our way. A rare night game in spring training. And mark ibanez is in arizona tonight. Mark, it looks like beautiful weather for the giants game tonight. Reporter it is perfect and what i wanted you to get a glimpse of is the crowd here for an evening game. You know, it is a little bit i just i just saying how mellow the spring training crowds are. But you know what. It is kind of cool here and you turn on camera on and people start freaking out but it is a mellow crowd. Nice crowd and perfect weather about 72 degrees. But one of the concerns a lot of the fans have a side from the fact that Madison Baumgartner will be pitching the health of hunter pence. He has been an iron man previous to last year but hunter, he pulled a muscle in late august and the giant pennant hopes went down the drain and this year he shows up with achilles heel issues bruce bochy addressed the health of hunter pence. We are Still Holding him back. Telling me he is ready to go tomorrow. We are better off being safe than sorry with the achilles. We will give him two or three more days just to be on the safe side. He is good to go. Good news and still wait for friday. All right. So there you have it. Bruce bochy saying that hunter pence will be good to go come friday. Madison baumgartner pitching and all of the attention to johnny cueto and Jeff Samardzija the free agent market. Giants need to know about their ace Madison Baumgartner and i cant tell you what a nice atmosphere it is at the ballpark and aside from the guys a little earlier you know it is a pretty quiet crowd and everybody is just taking it in. And we have some giant fans too always a little boisterous. It looks like a beautiful ballpark. You have been going to spring training for years. How has it changed for fans over the years . Well appreciate you. We have a dodger fan. Equal time. It has changed a lot. When we first came down here late 70s. Early 80s. You could get a hotel room and renting a car and when you come to the ballpark there was two or 3,000 fans in attendance and sit anywhere you wanted but it is big business and the giants winning three world series titles has a lot to do with that but a Cottage Industry in the month of march and weather is great and no shortage of fans and the hotels are packed and the rates go up to rent a car and get a room. But it has changed quite a bit but it is on notch down from a regular season game and the players not a lot of pressure like the regular season. I still recommend it has a little vacation get away to arizona. And you can wear shorts and short sleeves and love the weather. Im jealous. Mark, stay there. It looks like fun. Reporter but i would never wear shorts on television. Right, mark. All right. Mark ibanez in arizona tonight. Thank you. We will see you later. Lets turn to the weather center. Our chief meteorologist bill martin. I know bill this morning was chilly. It was. I love mark trying to sell us on phoenix in february. I get it. It is good. 75. Oh, my gosh. We are loading up with rain. Showers out there and the showers will ramp up. Not anything heavy but moist. Here is what is happening. I want to dial the jet stream. You see the stream lines and what you are looking at, the drop down here, this is providing some el nino moisture. And then back up through texas. They are saying Severe Weather and thunderstorms and tornado warnings and watches and flood concerns and that moisture causing problems if you are travel to go to southeast tomorrow or the central parts of oklahoma, parts of texas, alabama, check it out there will be delays. We are getting overrunning situation. All of that copias amount of moisture, el nino moisture coming in over the ridge. The ridges are typically dry. In this case so much moisture triggering showers environment. But there is so much moisture. See what is happening the Santa Cruz Mountains lighting up. More showers coming on shore. I have reports of sprinkles at halfmoon bay and some showers in hayward. San francisco scattered showers in the morning. Few sprinkles in the afternoon. And then late in the day, more clouds and maybe a sprinkle. Tomorrow is more of the dynamics are not set for a big event. As we move forward let me show you what we have. The model and at 5 00 tonight, there we are, and then there it goes. A Little Something at midnight. And then here we go to tomorrow mornings commute not much. Here we go to tomorrow afternoon not much and this thing loads up and this is your wednesday night early thursday. Your thursday morning commute will be wet. This system has got dynamics. Not just moisture but upper air support. We will get to that. Tomorrow a few sprinkles and maybe enough to delay your commute but pretty light stuff. The real rain gets in here wednesday night and thursday. Friday looks like a big deal. Saturday and sunday, when i say a big deal, period of heavy rain in this. We will have problems and we will see most likely will be back in flood advisories and watches and that Russian River will get high come the end of the week or the weekend next week we will talk about flood potential on the Russian River and it will keep coming in that drainage basin, 1500 miles and not as much rain south but in that area, the russian area maybe a foot of rain between now and say tuesday next week. This may get a good dentin the drought. Amazing. With that last storm it was biblical and i think the next one is not going to be as aggressive but in some places like north by the Russian River it could be. Thank you. Covering the Train Derailment turned dangerous for one of our crews. Coming up next, the very, very close call, yes. For alex savidge and his photographer, just out this morning trying to do their job. And later new at six, a bay area elementary school, first opened nearly a hundred years ago is getting ready to close its doors for good. Why Officials Say they have no choice and the plan to relocate students and staff. It is a sad moment for me that it is shutting down but hopefully it will reopen. Confusing situation. That was the frightening scene this morning at ktvu reporter alex savidge. He was out there with his photographer chip vaughn. A car comes careening towards them live on the air. Now alex was reporting on that Train Derailment when two cars crashed. In a supplies second one of the cars jumped the curb and alex and chip were barely able to get out of the way. I am still processing and my heart racing. I dont know what happened. All i know this is a we were on the air and i was talking about the derailment and in video and i heard chip just yelled out. He said get out of the way and i instinctively jumped to my right which is good because the car came by on my lefthand side and as close as it could get. Without hitting me. I will show you the car. Thats the car right there. Thats the one that almost hit me and it crashed into one of our lights and chip pulled the camera out of the way. And i think this driver we understand was making a right turn and someone else coming the other way was making a left turn and this honda making a left. Fremont police are here and sorting everything out. We dont know what went wrong or who was at fault or anything like that. Im grateful to be okay. Thats all i can say. Yes. And you can play what happened here if we have the video, go for it. Confusing situation. My gosh. That was too close. Far too close. And yes, i had to take a minute to process all up to it happened. And i would like to apologize too if there was any inappropriate language on my part. I apologize. I know we didnt hear anything inappropriate. We were just thankful you were okay. Maybe i was thinking it. I want to bring chip out here. This is our photographer. I would like to thank chip. Thanks, buddy. You are all right. Scary. Wow. You just think if he had jumped to the left. He would have jumped right in front of the car and instinctively and made the right decision. Alec was interviewed by tmz and the video spread online making National International headlines. One of the officers told alex now may be a good time to buy a lottery ticket. Every time i see that, hard to believe. Coming up here a supervisor in San Francisco wants the state of emergency declared not for the weather but in this case it would be for the homeless. Plus pulled two kids from a burning car and getting ready to talk to this hero. Ch p officer about the life he saved. And why jet blue is bucking the trend and training its own pilots and dont have to have experience. Flush a San Francisco supervisor is calling for a state of emergency not because of a Natural Disaster like a fire or flood but because of homelessness. Ktvu Tara Moriarty tell us why supervisor david compost says the city needs to solve the crisis and fast. Reporter chris has been living on the streets of San Francisco for 8 months. This is sad to say but like i knew how to make crack cocaine before i knew how to count to 100. Reporter his mother died of heroin overdose and his father is still an addict. My dad shot me up and injected me with heroin when i was 16. Reporter chris admits he ended up homeless because of his upbringing and poor choices. A heroin habitue cant beat. It looks bad. Reporter he used to live under the freeways but was kicked out when the city conducted massive sweeps and now he lives a block away and people say moving the problem one spot to another doesnt solve anything. I dont have answers. Reporter thats why david compost the city to declare a state of emergency. Because it is a crisis giving the city the authority to cut through the red tape so we can open up navigation centers. Reporter like this one on mission. A popular shelter in the homeless because it allows people to move in with their partners and pets. Officials say it has found permanent housing for 300 people and compost wants to open six in the next year. A very high bar and i accept his challenge. I think that there are some things that we dont want to cut corners on. The mayors camp adding five hundred Affordable Housing units and double the size of the Homeless Team but not everyone thinks the mayor is aggressive enough. We are unhappy with there was not a relocation plan. If the legislation is passed then officials may use city owned land for the homeless. At the end of the day we dont want to be out here. In San FranciscoTara Moriarty, ktvu fox 2 news. In pacifica a building sitting right on the edge of a crumbling cliff is going to be torn down today. Or torn down this week. We have video now that is pretty dramatic. It shows a ch p officer in monterey saving two children and two adults from a burning car. It happened yesterday morning. A fire broke out under the hood of the car on southbound highway one. Officer calaa was behind the car as the smoke started to pour from the hood and he got the driver out of front seat and rescued the two children from the backseat in the video. You saw the officer reaching from the passenger side to unlock the back door. Ended up pulling out a 2year old girl and oneyearold boy. The children, their mother and their aunt were all taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and are going to be okay. Today happens to be officer calaplas day off and gracious to talk to us by phone from monterey. First of all fantastic job. What was going through your mind as you were saving those kids. The biggest thing was just immediacy to get everybody out of the car. I saw the fire underneath it and the biggest thing was the car could have ignited any second and i was trying to do everything as fast as i could to get everybody away from the car. The car could have literally blown up. Were you aware of that the whole time . I was. And that was one thing going through my mind and trying to act as quick as i can and by gods grace that is something that did not happen. So i was thankful. Interesting. After you took the two kids out. I watched the passenger. I dont know whether thats the mom or aunt just open the door and get out. Did she stay in the car while the two kids in the back . The person that climbed out, is that the one you are referring to . Yes. She was the driver. Her the drivers door was unable to actually be open so in order for her to get out she had to crawl across the Center Console and the seat to get out. What did the family say to you afterwards . I kind of stepped back and let the emergency crew and fire an ambulance workers step in and do what they do best and they helped them out and they kind of got transported before i was able to talk to them after that. I didnt get a chance to say anything. The last question. There may be some questions to do Something Like that and hesitant to get involved and scared that the car may blow up. In a case like this, is it the training that takes over that instinct to save people . It is and thats what i signed up for as Police Officer and i am thankful to work for a department with a lot of men and women that have the same mind set that are willing to put themselves in harms way to get out of harms way and i didnt think about it. That was my react and just to go up there and make sure that everybody gets out safely. Great job officer and we appreciate you taking your day to talk to us fantastic stuff. A family of four alive because of your help. So thank you again for talking with us tonight. My pleasure. Thank you so much. Unbelievable. It is and when you see people often times runaway from danger. Thats the thing about lym or firefighters. They run towards danger. Job well done. The airline was designed specifically that way to make the profession assessable to more people and get people that have the qualities most wanted in a pilot. At the end of the four year long intensive Program Student pilots would have logged the fa arequired 1500 flight hours. Many of these programs that jet blue for instance is starting up from the beginning, the initial selection is going to be very, very important. Otherwise you are wasting your money and so is the individual paying for it. So jet blue is certainly going against the grain with this program. Many commercial airlines hire former military pilots and trained and have logged the hours. A landlord tells dozens of people they need to get out. I feel like im being forced out of San Francisco. Why the landlord says it is improper for people to keep living there. These arent models of satellites but the real thing and represent the future of space exploration. Water officials opened two more floodgates at folsom damage to manage the water levels. Three floodgates were opened as waters gushed in the american river. The water left is expected to rise 3 feet as a result. The first time in four years since the gates have been opened. Water officials need to lower the level to accommodate what they expect will be a big spring runoff. Here is the immediate benefit from a weekend full of rain. Just since last thursday at midnight, folsom lake has gone from 62 full to 71 full. Lake orville, 53 full to 60 full. Lake shasta 62 to 67 full and trinity lake gone to 40 full. Bill, the rain is needed. Good news but also the breaks are important. When i was thinking about the rain coming, the hardest part of that is the late part. So when it is 60 percent full this is a good and grabbing. It takes more water. So as we move forward there is more rain and i hope that made sense but the rainfall totals can be confusing, a reservoir level. Looking outside we have Severe Weather going on and off. Through dallas and tulsa and st. Louis. Traveling southeast be prepared for delays. Here comes the next weather system. Not much after system. It is actually but right now we are looking at just an atmospheric river. A fire hose pointed at us and with no dynamics and not seeing heavy rain. We could if it is learned to an upper level low. We would be having problems actually to tell you the truth. But instead we are still seeing showers despite but the dynamics arent there. They get here on thursday and friday and into the weekend and thats when things will become more aggressive in terms of rainfall. Not as powerful as what we had saturday but enough. It is going to keep coming for a few days. There is the oakland forecast. Sprinkles and partly cloudy and sunny and same deal in the afternoon. You will see this on the computer model. Most satellites weigh from hundreds to several tons and can cost billions but tom vacar says nasa is working to lower the costs. Nano cube sets or micro satellites really are small from about 4x4 by four inches to a square foot only two to 20 pounds each. Yet given todays digital and micro testimonies big experiments and sciences and discoveries do come in small packages. There is a leading role in building and testing and operating mall spacecraft technologies. The spacecraft and facilities that you will see today represent the new era of nasa. Small cost Space Missions to test new scientific theories and prices that taxpayers and universities and Entrepreneurial Companies can afford and the prices keep dropping. Perhaps a few Million Dollars in this case as compared to tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. In one case, swarms of dozens or even hundreds of low earth orbiting statistics can manage the Climate Change and Better Communications and navigation as well as scientific and medical research but themselves.
