Brooks jarocz is at the Family Reunification Center henry lee at Highland Hospital, but were going to begin with ktvu greg lee, who has been gathering all the information campus, greg. It has been an emotional time outside of this campus. Were just about a block away from where that shooting occurred. Ill step out of the way you can see the Law Enforcement presence that is still here. We have seen quite a few officers be released this afternoon. Once they deemed that that campus was clear, so they can let investigators do their work to try and piece together. What exactly happened . This afternoon that led to six people being shot. As you said, we heard from that Police Department a short time ago, providing the update that they could. Heres the deputy chief talking about the response this afternoon. Take a listen. Theres a shooting in their community. Its a complete tragedy. But as a parent. I completely understand the fear. The emotion. The panic shootings are occurring at our schools. Their young children. Its completely wholly unacceptable. Much of our time this afternoon on fontaine avenue has been spent speaking with some of those very anxious, scared parents. Weve also watched this afternoon as class after class was evacuated safely and quickly off of the campus and the several campuses of the schools that are here. I want to show you some video from inside a classroom as officers and Law Enforcement made their way methodically through each school , trying to clear those classrooms, ensuring there was no more threat. Take a listen is anybody. Did anybody see the shooter . Did anybody hear the shooting . You know anything about the shooting . It was like seven shots. He was like, pop pop pop, and then come on out. Come from back over there. Keep your hands up. Leave your right. Leave your bags bag. Right here. Frantic moments is, officers were going classroom to classroom with their guns drawn , ensuring that there was no threat in each classroom so they can release these students so they could get to that reunification site that youll hear about in a little bit. We spoke to a parent who sent us a video that you may be seeing of her seventh grade daughter. Huddled underneath a desk with her classmates. As the lights were turned off, they closed the doors and barricaded the windows. We have been saying throughout this afternoon. The unfortunate reality is that students and teachers and administrators go through regular active shooter drills so that they know what to do if a situation like this arises, certainly a scary time for all these students as they waited to get word, especially for these parents that their kids were safe. We spoke to a few of those parents as they waited here anxiously. I got a phone call from my kids mother. And you can hear the gunshots going off as she was speaking to me. She was crying. Um i know its three schools and one didnt have too much information. But i just dashed over here as soon as i could. Whats going through your head man. I was about to arrest the police because they wouldnt i was right there first in line, they wouldnt let me through. Was your daughter. You know what im saying . But you know, i respected them and they said everything was calm. Police on my daughters side, so that made me feel a little better scare. I was thinking the worst so im still shaking little nervous. Youre on campus when this happened the school did you hear the gunshots just here like shooting back . I didnt see i didnt think to look around my chest. Turn around to see the school. And i just hear like somebody was shooting and they closed the door and that only nobody getting. So much fear and anxiety from these parents and certainly a great sense of relief as they have been reunited with their students tonight. You heard that in those News Conferences this afternoon, but nonetheless six people, six adults shot and injured and are now in the hospital in a community that is certainly hurting mike. Julie i know youre both parents. You can understand the father who wanted nothing more than to rush this campus to rush to his daughters aid to ensure she was safe. Obviously he was stopped but again, Law Enforcement and parents everywhere understanding just the amount of fear. And sadness for this community thats endured so much and a violent week and a half as this investigation continues, father id be kicking the door down. You bet there at the campus. Let me ask you about the investigation. Real quick. Greg police really never said an exact number when it comes to shooter shooters, camper. Lets talk about cameras. Cameras are so key in many investigations. What do you know about cameras in the area . The neighborhood on campus that could help them determine how many exactly there are and then also maybe a description of the vehicle or the individuals themselves. My first of all just witnesses coming to us. The reporters that were out here we had parents coming to us and telling us what they thought. They saw. That woman you just heard from, said she was on campus that she thought she saw multiple shooters. And so certainly that is information that im sure the oakland Police Department whos taking the lead on this investigation is looking at. I took a walk a short time ago, while they allowed us to sort of that cluster of campuses and was looking for cameras. I didnt see any on the immediate perimeter, but that does doesnt mean there arent more inside. And also part of this, you have to imagine is interviewing those students that were there or that heard the gunshots or were inside the classroom at the time, and you could imagine that its certainly going to add to the trauma for these kids that have been through so much today to now have to begin to process those emotions of being through such a scary situation here. I got one more for you. And thats about the response because i find the video from inside the school very compelling. You know, you see oakland pd what i thought were also chp officers, maybe even deputies with Alameda County sheriff. But do you get a sense that the response was immediate. There was no hesitation from Law Enforcement. They got on campus and they went room to room. Yeah mike, i have to tell you just from our vantage point. We arrived here shortly after we received the call, and there are already a huge Law Enforcement presence. And then in that critical 1st 15 30 minutes. It was car after car. We saw numeral numerous agencies locally. We saw the atf agents arriving and so we saw them coming in four swat teams everyone rushing here as soon as they can, because that is the protocol. Friends that work in Law Enforcement. Tell me, the protocols have changed. The new protocol is you run in there you minimize the threat and you get to that shooter or shooters as quick as possible. And at least from our vantage point, that is what we observe greg lee live tonight in oakland. Greg appreciate it. Alright less than half an hour ago. James jackson , the ceo of Alameda Health system, gave an update on the shooting victims who are now being treated at Highland Hospital. Ktvu henry lee continues our Live Team Coverage from the hospital with the latest on that part of the story, henry, what are you learning . Well julie again of the six shooting victims, all adults, three. Were taking here to Highland Hospital in oakland, which is the local Trauma Center all too versed, very expert in dealing with gunshot victims. But we do have here is that of the three adult victims, two are in critical but stable condition and the third described as stable expected to recover. We do not know. How old they are order genders. That information was not shared to us. We also dont know the connection per se to the school. But we do know that again. Three victims were taken here to highland from the shooting. We did talk to james jackson, the ceo of Alameda Health system, the Parent Company of Highland Hospital within the last half hour. Heres what he had to say. This is a problem in 2021 2022. Weve seen. Almost a doubling of the Violent Crimes victims that were seeing here at our facility, so something has changed. Im a son of oakland. I grew up in oakland. This is not the oakland that i grew up in. Sadly, but fortunately, the doctors and medical staff here at Highland Hospital are very adept at treating victims of gunshot wounds so much so that opened police frequently complement the work here that they do, but for the work of the staff here at highland, many other gunshot victims would have otherwise died here at the hospital. We have seen a steady stream of Oakland Police both uniform and investigators with the criminal Investigation Division investigating and hopefully well be talking to the victims here at the highland unless they are medically cleared and okay to do so again. Also atf, San Francisco assisting opd Alameda County sheriffs provide security here, so a lot of Law Enforcement here and heavy security but again to recap of the six adult victims who were shot at the school complex. Three of them are here being treated highland to critical but stable in the third expected to recover. Live in oakland. Henry lee ktvu box studios still so many dots to connect. Okay, so we dont know the genders. We dont know the affiliation with the schools. Have you heard anything out there while youre covering this about maybe what led to the shooting today . What triggered all of the violence. We dont know how that information yet suffices stay Oakland Police working with 80 f and Law Enforcement partners to try to get at the circumstances of the shooting. Of course, we do not have any suspect information or vehicle descriptions. But again at this point, he said, at least one shooter is responsible at least and theyre trying to find that person at this time. All right, henry lee outside Highland Hospital tonight, where two people are in Critical Condition at this hour following this afternoon shooting, henry thank you, and parents with students on campus were told to meet their children. Annette mountain boulevard and fontaine street, and that is where our Team Coverage continues tonight with ktvu. Brooks jarocz brooks. Well you can just imagine for parents getting that call or that robocall on their phone being told theres been an incident at school. Come out here and get your kid and by the way, dont go to the school. Come here to keller avenue and mountain boulevard. Thats where we are right now. Theres a church on that corner over my shoulder there, where all of that being dozens and dozens of kids were put and made to wait until their parents could show up and teachers were there very carefully marking off each of those kids off the list to make sure they got reunified with their parents when we saw the parents its what they didnt say that spoke the most to us aside i of relief or just that look in their eye that oh, my god. My child is okay. And then when i spoke with them, many of them expressed sadness or anger over what is happening. And yet another act of violence in the city of oakland, as we know, at least one suspect still on the loose at this point. This is all playing out where cars were jammed up. Many of the exits were blocked on the highway, so parents were frantically trying to get there. And once they found out that their children were okay, they were very relieved. Listen to what one parent had to say. Just fair for our Children Safety and thinking maybe i should take her out of school and possibly get her home trained because just overall fear of you know the kids and their safety. Weve seen so many incidents. Violent incidents involving guns across the city of oakland to happen at a school again. What do you make of it . Its sad. Its sad. And i also like, um there has to be something done about it. You know, people need to be held accountable. Its not okay. These are children. What would you like to see . Done anything that comes to mind more security at the schools, more security at the schools and just us safer routine for the kids. And that feeling is shared by many parents are looking at some video. Now. This is from a parent who said he was very frustrated by the police response. He felt that officers were not rushing into the school now. Greg lee. My colleague says that that did happen, but there was still some really tense moments. And i asked City Council Member trivia read about this because you may remember. It wasnt too long ago that there were Many Police Officers that were in Oakland Schools they have since been taken out of those schools. And this question of security keeps coming up. So i asked her about it. Hear what she had to say. I think we need to bring parents and balcony and students back together to have that conversation when i was at madison park academy, with the School Shooting that took place about a month ago, the first thing that i heard from those parents where we never asked for that to be removed, and so there are certainly parents and faculty who dont believe that their voice was heard at the table with those decisions, and so weve got to bring everyone back together. As were working to rebuild, certainly trust with healing and trauma counseling, care thats needed. People want to understand how were going to keep their children and their loved ones safe, secure and have that piece on campus. And so it means looking at everything and figure out how were going to revisit those Safety Measures for our school sites. I talked with some Community Groups who say theyre really needs to start at home, and there needs to be some more investments made at the local level and in the neighborhoods that need help to make sure that violence has talked about that these things are addressed. Many of the parents i spoke with today said they dont want to send their kids back to school anytime soon. Theyre just worried that this could happen on any given day, and i think thats the feeling among a lot of people here today. Many of the parents i was trying to speak with. They sort of hung their heads and just said oh, boy, not again. This keeps happening. Whats it going to take to make it stop . And brooks was about 6 million at the some wanting to reinvest into the community and pulled that from Oakland School Police Department. The debate no doubt will now be issue. We put that six million back into the Oakland School Police Department real quick. Im curious about what their parents saying about the communication between the district and them during all of this, where they pleased with it. They thought they were getting enough information on where to pick their children up, etcetera. So initially, many parents told us that they had received a robocall on their phones that basically just said there has been an incident. You need to come pick up your child at this location, not really giving a lot more detail. Several of parents felt as though it was organized once they got here, but that moment from when they received that call to the moment they got here. That was when they were panicked and worried. Got it. Brooks jarocz appreciate the report. Thank you. Oakland Unified School District spokesperson jon sasaki spoke a short time ago confirming an incident happened on the king of state campus on fontaine street. Just off of 5 80. He mentioned that where the shooting happened was near Oakland Academy of knowledge, but that nothing with the incident had to do with that elementary school. We want these to be oasis for our kids, these are safe places. This kind of thing does not happen. Our schools. Its you know, we you know, obviously there was something that happened earlier in the year at another one of our schools, but in the six years ive been here. Weve had very, very few incidents like this. And so i want everybody to understand that this is a Community Issue that we need to come together to solve. Sasaki said there will be counselors at the schools on fontaine street for any student or teacher who needs someone to talk to. Oakland mayor libby schaaf did release a Statement Today on twitter. It does read. Lets put it up for you here today is gun violence at sojourner truth, school shocks the soul. Our schools are sanctuaries for our children are investigators report. All six victims are adults being treated for injuries at hospitals now . The school is now clear. Switch today category four storm tonight major flooding is being reported across the sunshine state. This is a live picture tonight of Raymond James stadium in tampa. Tampa actually fared okay cities to the south. Not so much right now. Parts of southwest florida are seeing record storm surge. Were talking about four. Myers and naples. Multiple rescues have taken place from vehicles and homes that says the hurricane continues to slowly move across the state. The hurricanes peak winds reached 150 mph when it made land. Ball. Forecasters say the storm surge could reach 18 ft. In fort myers. This is 100 miles south of tampa, 26 counties remain under evacuation orders, or at least 2. 5 Million People. Major concerns moving forward were talking tornadoes, flash flooding and up to 15 inches of rain over the next 24 hours. We do have live coverage on the storm. We begin with foxs Madeline Rivera live tonight in tampa, madeline. Mike and julie. We had to step into this little alcove just for some safety because we have been out in the elements for hours. And i mean it was just unforgiving. The wind was just going down blowing so steadily. The rain was just pelting you in the face. You can probably see the branches of the trees behind us gusts of the wind giving you an indication about strong. These winds are tampa expected to see between 18 to 20 inches of rainfall, a storm surge of about 4 to 6 ft and keep in mind. We are about a couple of hours north from where hurricane made landfall hours earlier ago today, so other parts of the state are seeing much, much worse. Hurricane ian barreling down on southwest florida wednesday afternoon at times, damaging winds topping 150 mph knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of people on Sanibel Island gusts pushed a devastating storm surge as ian moved ashore. The safest thing to do is to find an interior portion of your home without windows. Ah hunker down in that area away from what could be wind borne debris will slowly track across the florida peninsula, dumping more than a foot of rain over parts of tampa, jacksonville and orlando. Forecasters say by the time this hurricane leaves parts of the coast could see storm surge reach 18 ft. People here have prepared for the worst ive been here. 45 years, and this is the first time i left first storm. The water just really scared me and as well as the path the rest of the day were in. Were not going to be out again until probably friday. Some Emergency Response teams past service as the weather intensified. Florida Officials Say cruz will deploy as soon as conditions allow. You do have some people who chosen to hunker down in some very vulnerable areas, and so that is going to be something that i know that theyre keeping a very close eye on. I do want to update some of those numbers are now more than a Million People here in florida without power, a number that could increase, of course, as this storm continues to bring down power lines and trees about 42,000 linemen are at the ready, ready to respond to those power outage. Just once. Of course, it is safe to do so like to see those utility crews ready to roll out there, right. Madeline rivera live tonight. There in tampa. Be safe, madeline and thank you. Already this storm was a big one. It still is a big one, and its i hate to say this, but its far from over. I mean, this is just an ongoing, slow moving disaster that the this mornings event it started like this. Its about 305 this afternoon, the eye wall came on shore and at 150 miles an hour, right, so 100 50 miles an hour you go. Its cat four. Its only seven miles an hour short of a cap five. This thing is massive in its slow moving and its causing tons of rain. Two ft. Maybe three ft. Storm surge has been manageable thus far, but you see where it is. Theres still storm surge occurring in fort myers. As things come onshore, the system is still a category at last check a category three hurricane even though it is over land that is unusual when you things usually fall apart pretty quick, but because of where it sits, these are the current wind speeds. Difficult at some stations in the area, but you can see where the eye of the storm is. Its in central florida, which mikey thats about where orlando is right right in the middle, basically, so its right around the middle, so probably right over orlando, where a lot of people, including mix brother were evacuated to, um, away from sarasota right now. Category three. This is the plan category one by thursday and then it turns into Tropical Storm but wants to make landfall again. In the South Carolina as a Tropical Storm but still massive amounts of rain, so just because the wind is over the big event here right now is about rain in the potential for 2 to 3 ft. In some places, the storm surge, which is pretty much ending in the next few hours, but now all the rain comes down and all the creeks are full, and this area was already extremely extremely wet. So its a big one. I mean, theyre going to take days to unravel. Whats going on down there. What went on this, youll see. I mean, this is one of those events and happened during the middle of the day and we still dont know what really happened. In terms of the devastation outside, you go, and thats why a lot of us live out west. You know, we dont have a hurricane season. You know why the water is too cold . We cant you need you need like like 89 degree water to get a hurricane to form. And we just dont have that. So thats fortunate. And so we dont see hurricanes and we have fought because of the cold water temperatures today. Like they were yesterday. Temperatures tomorrow a little warmer. Ill see you back here with that. All right. Well, well see you a bit. Thank you. And a reminder you can stay up to date with the latest developments on Hurricane Ian. Ktvu is tom baker has been following the storms path and continues our Team Coverage now live from the newsroom. Tom well as we start, lets take a look at where this monstrous heading, which is directly towards orlando, 2. 6 Million People. Since the year 2000. Florida has been hit 79 times by hurricanes or Tropical Storms. 123 billion in damage. 229 People Killed in 4 2006 storms damaged one in five florida homes. That included hurricane charley, which landed at ko cost to the exact same place where ian landed today. Social media has played a big role. In the twittersphere hurricane in became a showcase for the power of nature and wind waves and surge. Resumed with tim tullis, who lives in the sarasota bradenton area when Hurricane Ian was less than 40 miles away, just beyond the hurricanes, core strength we just industry and in, uh, shatter resistant windows, so were very comfortable with that. We have not lost power shortly after this interview, mr tell us lost power and internet. Theyre telling us that were far enough away that we will certainly see tropical force. Yeah Hurricane Force is live in tampa less than 150 yards from tampa bay. And just a few feet above sea level. I was terrified , and i really felt that we needed to get anything of value out of here because i didnt know whether we were gonna come back and find anything or not old oaks all over the neighborhood and high winds all around a lengthy power failure is of great concern. We have a couple of coolers with some dry ice in them sitting just in case we lose power so we can offload some of the stuff from the free these are in the fridge. Not even considering the other parts of florida. Just wear hurricane made landfall in a place with 500,000 people. 30 to 50 billion is not at all and unreasonable guests on top of that people who decided to stay at home very likely made a fatal mistake. Tom baker ktvu fox. To them there is that the people who decided not to evacuate the danger zones because search and rescue teams are saying theyre not going to go in there. Its just too dangerous to do so right now, tom as we head into the nighttime hours, and it gets later tonight, what is probably the biggest cern. There is more than 1. 5 Million People right now, with that electricity also the storm surge. What are you seeing as we head into the overnight hours for people, its going to be the discomfort of it all. The fact is that were talking about a very hot place and theyre going to be a lot of critters running around the kind that have fangs and teeth and things like that. Thats that part. The other part of it is and this is the worst part of it is there are a lot of people are going to come out and see what they can get from somebodys house because so many of these houses are abandoned, and we see that in every fire, we see that in every flood. We see that in every major disaster, and florida will be no exception to that. Yes still a long way to go with this storm. Still a very dangerous situation, tom. Thank you and the federal government remains on high alert as the hurricane crosses the state. The Biden Administration is promising assistance as soon as the storm moves out of the region. C. Coming up. We are hopping on board with Hurricane Hunters. The Mission Going into the eye of hurricane in well do a quick check on the in where it is now and whats going to happen, plus our forecast, which does include a little bit of a warm up kevin ive fought wildfires for twenty years. Heres the reality we face every day. This is a crisis. We need more firefighters, more equipment, better Forest Management to prevent wildfires and reduce toxic smoke. And we need to reduce the tailpipe emissions that are driving changes to our climate. Thats why cal fire firefighters, the American Lung association, and the California Democratic Party Support prop 30. Prevent fires. Cut emissions. And cleaner air. Yes on 30. Hunter made its way into the eye wall of the hurricane in early this morning, nasa sharing this space view by the way of that storm. One of the pilots is calling it the worst flight. Hes actually experience foxes. Madison scarpino live tonight for us in biloxi, mississippi. With the story. Good evening, madison. Hey good evening, mike. We were on board the nine our mission in the eye of Hurricane Ian. The flight was not all smooth sailing. There was one moment where he dropped 1200 ft. In just a matter of seconds. Watch this. You an idea of what were dealing with here . Some of the video shot during some of the terrible turbulence and what the crew called some of the worst weather theyve ever seen. After taking off from the air force base in biloxi, the aircraft went in and out of the eye wall heading towards florida. Four separate times. Turbulence was moderate initially, but after if you go around, it became nearly out of control in the pilot called it a quote war zone. Crew went on to say that the turbulence we all felt was not normal at all for these Hurricane Hunter flights, and its clear this isnt your average hurricane as well. While this mission is dangerous, its incredibly important because going in the center of the storm is the only way the National Hurricane center can get this Critical Data like wind speed where the storm is and how strong it is. Got rocked like to say like a boxer. The aircraft was basically overmatched at one point we were back power. Trying to gain speed. Basically diving losing there. It was a mess. It was the worst thing. You could, uh what to happen as a pilot. These flights have been running a few times a day since over the weekend, but the last scheduled mission just landed a few hours ago. And biloxi, mississippi. Madison, scarpino ktvu, fox two news. Yeah you know what if the pilots are saying that sat gnarly, its that gnarly. I mean, thats really im glad i wasnt on that flight seriously because they fly in those, but you know, they fly into them, right . Obviously she pointed out, but, you know, we send up weather balloons twice a day. At most airports. Those big weather balloons are used to associating with forecasts there. Do you really doing the same thing there dropped doing drop sounds typically, and its a its basically in reverse is dropping through the storm and taking humidity and temperature readings. Um, so but flying into a storm like that would just be wow. Always thought i wanted to toys. So that story 82 in napa today, alejo was 80 to 84 conquered another nice day temperatureswarm a little bit more on friday, and then we kind of just level off. So this week has been. Weve had a few really great weeks of hmm. Fire resistant weather not resistant, but certainly helpful. Weve had a couple of fires brushfire starting here and there, but they get crunched or crushed early because of this mild, higher humidity atmosphere that were in there. Thats just come up north. Thats the thing that that weather systems of the one that went through and basically broke up the inversion and set us up. With deeper marine layer, so lets see if we can pop that box out there. Were going to step out. Ill step in. There we go. And then you see that this system right here, so that system is the reason for the deeper inversion. The reason for that low pressure being there and the reason were going to start to warm a little tomorrow because that low is going to migrate, and when it migrates the high builds in we do this dance all summer long. The high comes in low tweaks by high comes back. Those cooler highs warmer, just roughly so forecast tomorrow, a little bit warmer because of high is going to try to nudge its way back in right now temperatures running a little warmer than they were yesterday , the forecast overnight lows like youd expect in the fifties , the forecast some fog at the coast and in the peninsula, and then you warm up oranges or eighties. So tomorrows a nice day, and it is kind of feel strange doing our weather, which is perfect coming off ian wright , because thats thats the story of the year truthfully in terms of whether its said and done whats happening down there what has happened . What will continue to happen throughout the evening hours, so well keep you up on that. Ill see you back here at six. Thank you coming up tonight at six.
