At this point the backlash against the white house shows little sign of weakening. We are getting new details now on what led up to the wiring of the fbi director, yesterday. Sources say james comey asked the justice department, just last week, or more resources to conduct the investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 election. Democrats suggest the president is trying to stall the investigation by firing james comey. But according to the white house he was let go over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clintons email practices. In a meeting today with henry kissinger, the president spoke briefly. He was not doing a good job very simply. Director comey made a startling revelation that he had essentially taken a stick of dynamite and thrown into the department of justice going around the chain of command when he decided to take steps without talking to the attorney general or Deputy Attorney general one holding a press conference telling them he would not let them know what he was going to say. Sanders was referring to the surprise News Conference last july when he announced Hillary Clinton would not face charges for her use of a private email server as secretary of state. A number of democrats are not buying the explanation. As i reflect on the decision to dismiss director comey, i become incredulous, thinking about the ongoing fbi investigation into russias interference with their president ial election and possible connections to associates of the Trump Campaign and administration. Senator feinstein and other democrats are demanding a special prosecutor to oversee the russia investigation but Senate LeaderMitch Mcconnell said today that an independent investigation would only impede the current congressional and fbi probe. This is only the second firing of an fbi director in u. S. History. President clinton fired william sessions in 1993 over ethics violations, after a lengthy investigation and a replacement was named the next day. Joining us for perspective on how this is being felt inside the fbi is former special agent, rick smith. Do you think he had to go . I think he had to go. During his tenure, the reputation was tarnished. That is a cardinal sin but it wasnt all his fault. He was director during that period of time. There are things that happened that in my view were inexcusable. The press conference last july, he did not handle properly at all. I think he should have recommended indictment of Hillary Clinton it didnt. Nevertheless he had the press conference, talked about what a good prosecutor should do, not his purview. And then ended up criticizing Hillary Clinton during the press conference. He will recommend indictment, should not be criticized as the subject of investigation. It all went downhill after that. If he had to go, why did he go when trump took over as president january . The timing seems suspicious, at least that is what democrats are saying . I think that is a good question. I think there might be some regret and not firing the director in january when the president took office. I have to say now that the reason for the firing was something that happens last july so the optics here are not real good, during the investigation of collusion between the administration and rush on the election. It looks like it may have gotten close to home and the appearance that contributed to the decision to fire the director. It is a complicated issue, but i think from the perspective of fbi agents and the fbi, he didnt fire the fbi, he fired the director. They can still do the job and the organization is going to do the job on whatever, including the Russian Election issue. The key factor is that during the directors tenure, the fbis reputation was tarnished because it looked politicized. My understanding is the San Francisco fbi field office, one of the largest in the country of the 53 offices in the united states. Are you talking to current agents in San Francisco and other offices . What are they saying . I have spoken to former agents throughout the day and yesterday. I think, listen, this is a Major Development and there is all sorts of aspects to it that are important. And its kind of complicated. I have not spoken to anybody that thinks that press conference was a prudent thing to do. For a lot of reasons. That contributed to james comey being fired. But it should have happened before, not necessarily right now. Greg smith, we hope to talk to you again soon. It looks like the story will be sticking around for a little bit. Thanks for joining us. Earlier today we spoke by phone to California Democratic senator Kamala Harris in washington dc. This is what she had to say about the firing. Any of the normal Citizens Walking around would not have the power to fire the cop or fire the judge in a case but it is clear this administration, when it does not like where the class is headed actually firing the people responsible for doing the work of justice. Senator harris on the Senate Intelligence committee. Her committee has asked james comey to report to them to answer questions but no word whether he will appear. We also spoke to barbara lee who appeared on todays new news. I think what we need to do is establish the independent commission introduced in congress and speaker ryan needs to call us back to begin to debate this and set it up. Republicans quote control the show so she doesnt know whether or request for congress to reconvene will be granted but she says democrats should stop fighting. For more reaction i am joined by the former chair of the California Republican party. What you make of the ouster . This is the south inflicted wound. Ive been an attorney 30 years. I remember sitting in a Seattle Hotel room, working on a case and was utterly shocked he would come lay out an indictment and more shocked when he said and we shouldnt do anything about it. That is not his role. I was shocked in october when he said we are investigating her again and i thought boy he better have heard dead to right and he didnt. That is not his role. These are selfinflicted wounds. He was way too political, he needed to go. But the timing seems to be problematic not skeptical about it . I am not. I will tell you why. There was no way he would get fired in the first month because thats not you want the first month as president or second or third. You want to be doing something. They did appoint someone to look at this. Now, what is going on this week . Virtually nothing. They did healthcare, getting ready to do taxes, this is where you do it and it comes after the report is done. First of all there is never a good time to fire and fbi director, fed chair or attorney general, none of those people. This was a decent time, but politics, there will always be skepticism. West talk about some republican reaction to even arizona senator flake said im having trouble with this something about this, why it is happening now gives me pause. When you have fellow republicans questioning the timing . Theres never a good time to fire someone of this size and importance but again this is a selfinflicted wound. His testimony last week was ridiculous. Reporter he accused cindy out hundreds of thousands of e mails and it turned out to be a handful. You dont do this has anything to do the rush investigation . He always had to go. The rush investigation will last until next year. Should we let him hang around another year and continue to make irresponsible statements . And he kept doing it. Make a mistake. Five or six . What about special prosecutor. The last Major Special prosecutor, Archibald Cox which started with an actual break in the whole world could see it, no confusion. I am begging someone to tell me the actual crime committed by russia or people involved, of course russia is meddling in our elections we metal and theres, all over the world. Is this possibly connecting the Trump Campaign to that . All possible, get a special prosecutor when you have actual evidence of a crime and the important parts is connected to people in the administration so high you cant separate it out. None of that has been linked does that mean a year from now we could have one . May be. I personally doubt it is after six months of looking for the smoking gun, they havent found it. It appears democrats are going to dig it on the. They have no agenda but to stop the president which is why republican should do Something Like healthcare and tax reform. They want that special tax reform lets see if they get it. Will have much more on all this drama playing out on capitol hill. Head to our website for the latest from President Trumps comments. Also tweets and reaction from democrats and other republicans as well. Charged for conserving. Why some bay area water customers could soon pay more on their monthly bill. We know he was also involved in another shooting in oceanview back in january when he shot a mentally ill man. We will talk about the town hall meeting. There was a chilling video played in the room, we watched in silence as the suspect scabbed the victim over and over again with a knife as a coward in the corner in fear and bystanders try to help. The 26 yearold transient seen in the camouflage shirt ordered a sandwich at the subway shop and a third but refused to pay. Reporter a video freeze frame shows the knife in his right hand. Police arent sure if he grabbed it off the counter or had it on his person. Body camera that it should video shows the officer shooting him in the back as he goes after the victim. Reporter evidence indicates officer fired one shot. I have one question for the officer why didnt you just pistol whipped the man in the back of the head. Reporter the chief offered no response only to say the case was under investigation. We expect scrutiny anytime we use force that results in loss of life or serious bodily injury. Reporter the officer is the same officer that shot a mentally ill man in his own home back in january people insinuated that he was trigger happy. Anytime he wants a vacation all he has to do is shoot somebody. Reporter no wonder people dont trust the police anymore others praised the officer and bystanders able to distract him until police arrived. If they had not intervened at the time they said, the victim may not be here today. Reporter so many calling the bystanders heroes. Police say they interviewed the victim and seven witnesses that they are still looking for three more witnesses from the video. The victim, who received stab wounds to the head is doing well and has been released from the hospital we learned that his funeral was in texas yesterday. Im told he suffered from Mental Illness and was possibly high on drugs when he attacked the worker. Of course we have to wait and see when toxicology reports come back. Police say homeowners could see water rates increase the summer. They will raise the cost by 20 next year. Utility says it is really grateful to customers who conserved water during the drought but because of the conservation efforts, a lost about 12 of its revenue and it needs the money to pay for infrastructure. They have a proposal for a cost increase of 9. 25 starting mid july and another 9 increase in 2018. The idea of a rate increase, not sitting well with some homeowners. We did all the steps to reduce water usage, we put in native plants, low float toilets and shower heads and your reward is nothing. The average homeowner will see an increase of about 4. 34 per if approved. By the end of 2018 homeowners pay 9 extra. They will hold a public hearing on july 11. If approved the rate increase will go into effect july 12. Getting a lot cooler out there. New video servicing of a fight on a Southwest Airlines plane headed oakland. This happened sunday when three passenger started fighting on a flight on a layover in burbank. The Flight Attendant rushed into try to stop it but instead she got knocked to the floor. A witness is a man in a White T Shirt is throwing punches, initially the victim in this slugfest. Finally some passengers run up from the back of a plane to break things up. I told the stewardess call the captain there is a flight fight up front and theres a pile of people with cell phone cameras in the way side just tell them shut off your camera, get out of the way and help and i go forward and that is when i finally reached them i separated the two men. The man you just heard from praised the Flight Attendant are doing all they could. The passenger that started throwing the punches was arrested for assault and battery and still in jail this morning. The flight eventually took off for burbank and landed in oakland without any other problems. Coming up at 5 30, what may be behind the recent string of incidents aboard planes across the country. The issue of charging people to drive down the creek it part of lombard street has been a hot button issue. We will talk with the board president about it after the break. But what we dont need are surprises, like extra monthly fees. I see you, fee, played by legendary actress anjelica huston. You got me, mark. Internet for one everyday simple price and no extra monthly fees. To take advantage of this offer on a volvo s90, visit your local dealer. To take advantage of this offer on a volvo s90, food. Water. Internet. We need it to live. For all the streaming and the shopping and the newsing, but most of all. For the this. Internet for one everyday simple price and no extra monthly fees. A few stories we are following this afternoon including a recent settlement over the short term rental law and also a plan for a toll on lombard street. We will talk about the airbnb issue in a moment the first we want to ask you about this lombard street issue. Apparently the plan was to charge people for going down the crooked part of the street because of the congestion, the people that lived there putting up with the traffic. The idea to put a handle on that and reduce traffic and ease concerns of residents. You dont want this to move forward at this point, tell us why . I grew up in San Francisco like supervisor farrell, whose district this is in. I know he has been working on this a long time with many neighbors, they are concerned about public safety, traffic. It seems to be an overwhelming amount of tourist coming in on weekends, there is major concerns. They been working on this for a couple of years to look at what the options are. I think the point i made at the Transportation Authority as im really concerned about taking us in a direction where we look at reservations, charging people to make reservations to see something that has always been available to residents and visitors alike for as long as i remember. I have real concerns talking to the supervisor about those concerns. Are you looking at options that might avoid the charges still reduce the question the congestion there . Definitely practice to be clear about 200,000 of the money is scheduled to be used to do capital improvements, things that hopefully make the area a safer place for folks visiting. Also a study to look at the possibility of charging reservation systems. There is concern that we cant charge people under state law to go down a public street. There are a few things we need to iron out. More importantly i am not 100 comfortable moving in a direction where we are looking at the possibility of charging. We have to come up with better solutions. I know supervisor farrell, along with neighbors there and folks who live in the area have been working on this for years. They are at their wits end. I am not certain this is the right solution. Lets talk about this airbnb settlement. Talk to me about what the city stands to gain out of this, what airbnb wins and what people in these areas, where folks are renting out their homes stand to gain in the settlement . We here at the city, technology is changing, things are changing and this new platform, New Territory for the city and policies is something that was important for us as policymakers to manage, allowing those who need this option as a way, in some instances to make ends meet, pay their mortgage help put their husband a lady my district help put her husband in care home and she did not qualify for a low income subsidy. Chooses this as extra income to support her family. Also know there are a lot of people abusing the system, evicting people, giving them buyouts, turning them into full time airbnb home sharing platforms. The goal of the legislation is to basically get rid of the people who are breaking the law. The settlement is an opportunity for the city and the hosting platform to finally agree and Work Together to try to read the system of the individuals who think they can get away with abusing the system, taking complete units off the market providing them just for this particular platform. This is a huge victory. We have set in motion, with the settlement of the work at the City Attorney and his team, the opportunity to finally get the platform to basically follow the law. But more importantly those who want to break the law now and in the future are put on notice that their time has run out, time for them to find another business. Thank you so much for taking time to talk to us. Coming up, as washington buzzes over the ouster of fbi director james, russians foreign minister pays a visit to the president and secretary of state. We welcome him so we can continue the dialogue that began in moscow. . Continuing coverage of the drum on capitol hill, some suggest timing of the firing of the fbi director is curious. Both President Trump and the secretary of state met with russias foreign minister today less than 24 hours after the president fired the fbi director, investigating moscows involvement in the elections. I thought it was very good. Reporter President Trump with former secretary of state, henry kissinger, by his side commenting on his meeting with the Russian Foreign minister. Part of the conversation focusing on the kremlins plan to deescalate serious civil war through regional cease fire. We want to see the killing, the horrible killing stop as soon as possible. Reporter Foreign Policy pertaining to situation also among the talking points. One thing no one in washington could seem to stop speaking about is the timing of the meeting coming less than one day after President Trump fired fbi director james comey, who is investigating russias meddling in the 2016 president ial election. The foreign minister joking about the big news of the day. The visit comes just one week after President Trump and russias president , vladimir putin, spoke by phone, both agreeing to improve strained relations between the two nations. I am glad secretary tillerson is talking to the Russian Foreign minister. There are things we need to try to work out in common. Reporter also reportedly talks about the possibility of president s trump and put in meeting for the first time scheduled for july. Do you agree with the president s decision to fire director james comey, yes or no. Check out the results about 75 of people responding say they do not agree with the decision. You can take the poll and weigh in on our facebook and twitter pages. Lets talk more with our political analyst. What do you make of this decision . Startling in its own way the timing is interesting. Ultimately, the fbi director is a political appointee and the president can take the decision to fire that person just as, by the way emma bill clinton did a 1993 when he fired william sessions. The difference, that was a year long investigation. There were ethical issues even republicans were upset with so there was not a big controversy when william sessions was fired and the next day there was a replacement in line, in this case this caught everybody by surprise and there is no replacement in place. President trump says he has been thinking for a long time why did he not have someone lined up. Interesting question. The acting director will take over for a while, termed interim director, but we will see what happens with that. They claim they have a short list of people they want to speak with and interview. A couple i am not sure would be palatable, Chris Christie is one, im not sure anybody is ready for Chris Christie. The sheriff from wisconsin, clark . Yes. We had former fbi agent who basically said and agreed with this and said james comey was lacking trust within the fbi, being problematic. How does this impact the overall daily activities of the fbi . The fbi, i know a lot of agents are dedicated to their mission. This is not going to take them off their mission. Lets go back in history. The person we hear allusions to nixon and watergate and all that stuff, you know who deep throat was, a long time fbi insider. The rankandfile career fbi people will make sure that if there is information that needs to get to the American People it will get to the American People. One person is not the investigation. Talking about that investigation, if President Trump does put in somebody like Chris Christie or Rudy Guiliani or the sheriff in wisconsin as the head of the fbi, how does that affect the investigation because cant that person squash it . Yes and no. I think what you would see is careerists in the fbi getting information kind of a deep throat scenario. I dont think the information is never not going to get out. And can delay it but we have the poll going, 75 of the people say they disagree. Washington insiders are clear that had Hillary Clinton been elected he was on his way out. You have to put it in perspective for me he was not popular on either side of the aisle. But what is still curious is the timing and you point to a lack of a backup candidate. Obviously, all the questions about who will replace him and the appointment of a special prosecutor. Absolutely. That is a whole other point of discussion. Do you think that will happen . That statute went away. There was a point, not really a special prosecutor, it is a special council. You dont know if you have anything to prosecute. Somebody to look into it. Currently there isnt a mechanism in place to do that, but that could change fairly easily. Looks like democrats are digging in. Absolutely. That little girl found in a casket and a San Francisco home she now has a name. We talked with the Nonprofit Group that work to make the identification. Temperatures cooling trend starting today.
