In the central portions of the bay, marin county and San Francisco, window we have heavier storms. Highway 24 got a good soaking. 61 inches an hour in that area. Widespread coverage towards concord. San ramon and in the south bay. From redwood city and san jose we are getting a break right now. Thats good news. I 17 is getting a bit of a break at last check. Lets expand the view. The Atmospheric River is right here. Its picking up into the bay area. Still some rainfall in the forecast for tonight. Eventually thunderstorm chances. We have more on that coming up in a few minutes. We have been getting reports of mud slides, downed trees and flooding across the bay area. Todays storm is causing more problems along palo verde road. More dirt and debris came crashing down on the roadways. In the south bay people that live near coyote creek are keeping an eye on the water there. Fire crews had to rescue two kayakers that were caught offgored. Reporter the rising water took some people by surprise this afternoon. This is the scene as fast waters turned a homeless encampment into an island. A man and woman were stranded and were able to call for help on a cell phone. Crews brought them safely to shore. They needed to be hosed down because of the contaminants in the water. The Fire Department called it a successful rescue but the high water meant high danger, even for them. Even if it were clean water moving at this speed, you can get carried downstream and get killed by the water. This is the anderson reservoir. The spillway is in use for the First Time Since 2006. The outlet looks like a guiser. They are expecting to hit peak flows tomorrow morning. Crews are going to be out looking for flooding. City and county officials are opening two evacuation centers, they are not calling for evacuations but they are opening them in case, one is at Roseville Community center. They are also opening two overnight shelters. One is at lake high school. The other at ever green high school. They are not calling for evacuations but they said if some people want to voluntarily get up to Higher Ground the shelters are open and they are an option for them. Thats impressive. Coyote creek runs through san jose into San Francisco bay, does it show any signs of retreating. Is the water getting to the edges . Reporter where we are now is a lowlying area. There are some homes nearby, its 5 feet from overflowing in an area where there are some homes, there is some pooling at this point. A mobile Home Community is threatened. The issue is ponding. But because the peak flows are not expected until tomorrow morning, we will see tomorrow to what extent coyote creek goes over the banks. All of this heavy rain is making it tough going. One of the bay areas most notorious trouble spots, the Santa Cruz Mountains had more mud slides. One man that lives at the top of the hill said the work to stabilize the previous slides made matters worse. They dug into the hillside and now its making a mess, they opened up a can of worms here.
