We have been talking about el nino since last spring and the models have been increasing the strength. So far everything remains on track. That is the el nino region. That is the region that could have a big impact as we head into the winter months. In fact, this is the strongest el nino on record. How did the exercise go . What do we learn . Today, we had the whole community here, representatives from all different federal agencies. We looked at the threats of el nino by looking back at past events. We looked at our ability to respond at the federal, state, and local level and are we ready . We had discussions about that and identify areas where we are ready and areas we need to continue to improve. With el nino, the stereotype is you get most of the concentrated rainfall down towards Southern California. Are you balancing more towards Southern California in terms of preparation . Well, we are definitely looking at Southern California. We had la county and la city here today. If you look back at the last el nino, it impacted all the way up to sacramento. So, we want to be ready wherever oneill takes us within california. Obviously, with burned areas more susceptible and the number of landslide prone areas, we want to make sure that california is ready, regardless of where the threat is. Tell us about the areas where we are not quite ready and what do we need to do. One of the things we talked about with regard to el nino is because of californias unique topography and the threat to different areas and different states of that soil, as you go from burned area to landslide, to burn areas, that the messaging may need to be different. To be able to target messaging and make sure that we are able to do that for the entire population. Those are some of the areas that we identified to include being able to support red cross and local governments and providing shelters. I think i recall the numbers from 97 and 98 being around 100,000 people evacuated. So, we want to make sure those resources are prepositions and that we are ready to help the state of california. In 1997 and 1998 we had forecast models, but there have been a rapid growth, based on what we are seeing right now, if you see a significant event five or seven days out from the forecast model is that enough to trigger an action plan . A plan does start right now with preparing all the way to the five and seven days out and trying to watch specific storms move out. I think one of the things about el nino is it is compounding events that occur. We want to use as much information as we can from the National Weather service and other social others about where localized impacts may be so that we can make sure we have the right federal resources where they may most be needed. As we know, our First Responders are local government and california has great resources there. A public apology from the mayor of chicago, following a Deadly Police shooting. Protesters have spent most of the day demonstrating in the street and chanting 16 shots and coverup. They are now calling for the chicago mayor to step down. The teenager was shot 16 times back in october 2014. The video prompted the force recognition of the police chief as well as a civil rights investigation. Meantime, rahn emanuel made a special address to the city council this morning saying that what happened to the teenager never should have happened. So far a storm track has been pointed out to our north, but we will see a change. As a result, the dynamics will produce the rainfall rates into the weekend. Current numbers out there, 61 degrees in fairfield, more 60s out towards santa rosa. Here we go, some of these expectations, rainfall about a quarter of an inch to about an inch and a half for the north bay coastal hills. Wins winds a factor as well. The sierras will definitely pick up more snowfall. Here is a breakdown of the rainfall accumulations. As you work your way, north you will likely pick up more rainfall.
