Well be hearing a lot of this music. Gets me giddy. The nbc news Election Night music. One year out and we can agree on this American Voters have lost faith in their elected officials and are looking for someone to restore trust in government again. In a moment, i be joined by two candnddates who represesnt thihi antiilitician mood off the ccntry, donald trump a a Bernie Sanders. But first, another one of those candidates who has seized on the Republican Voters frustration wi politics as usual is ben carson. But his rise in the polls has been clouded lately by allegations that he has been embellishing or possibly making up stories about his young life. My colleague Chris Jansing caught up with carson at jfk airport last night in new york and asked him about the stories that he was a violent teen, that he was offered a scholarship to west point after meeting with general william westmoreland, and the first thing youll hear that he protected whixe students at his high school duri the mlk riots in detroit. Reporter so what they said was that they contacted a number of people there, they talked to a teacher there, that none of those people remember this happening. Well, they dont remember the riot . Reporter everyone remembers the riot, that i dont remember the role you say you played in helping to protect white students i. Why would t ty know about that unless they were one of those students . Reporter so it doesnt surprise you no one in any of these stories has come forward . Maybe one of those students will come forward. I dont know. Im just now hearing about it. Maybe theyre not spending all of their time reading the wall street journal. Reporter general westmoreland, we nowknow now looking at his records that he was not there when you said in your book i know he was there in detroit and it may not have beenn time during the time when i was a city executive officer. Reporter wouldnt the easiest way to defuse at least some of these questions wiuld be to ask your brother to come out and speak about this . You said it was your mother and brother who would know about your temper. My mother has alzheimers. Obviously. My brother is not interested in talking to the media and a number of other people arent, either, that ive talked to. Reporter vetting is a normal part of the process. Did you not expect this . I have always said that i expect to be vetted. But being vettednd whatts going on with me you said this 30 years ago, you said this 20 years ago, this didnt exist, this didnt exit, i have not seen that with anyone else. If you can show me where thats happened with someone else, i will take that statement back. Reporter i think almost every person who has been president not like this. No, not like. This i have never seen this before and many people other people who are politically experienced tell me theyve never seen it before, either. Repopoer you dont thhk a bill clinton or the president with his birthcertificate,e, peoplpl still not like this. Not even close. Reporter so what do you think is going on . Why you . Because im a threat. Reporter to . To the progressives, the Secular Progressive Movement in this country. Im a very big threat because they can look at the polling data and they can see that im the candidate whos most likely to beat Hillary Clinton. They seethat. Ii is this fun for you . Would i ihave p pferred to be doing Something Else . Certainly. But its important to me and when i think about the sacrifices that were made by those who preceded us in order that we mig have the freedom we have now, its the very at least that i can do. Theres more to chriss meetthepressnbc. Com including a question about the classes he took at yale. Let me go to donald trump. He joins me by phone hours after hosting saturday night live. So without further ado live from new york its sunday morning ith donald trump. P. Mr. Trump, weeome back to meet the press. Good momoing, chuck. Let me get your reaction. Do you think this matters, whats going on here with dr. Carson . Well, i feel badly for ben. Ive got on the like ben. s a tough thing. He writes a book where he went after his mother, hit her on the head or wanting to hit her on the head with a hammer, hitting a friend in the face with a padlock, National Guard the face, face hard in the face. Only to be broken up by a belt buckle. Which if you know belt buckles, hey turn and twist. And whenene writes that he h h pathological diiase in a bobok, now, he obviously wrote this book prior to thinking about running to office but he says he has pathological disease you dont believe him, do you . Well, if you have pathological disease, thats a problem. He wrote it, i didnt write it. Hes going to have to explain a lot of things away. The scholarship situation, the dinner with westmoreland when westmoreland wasnt there. The pyramids mere midspyramids are solid structure other than a little area for the pharaoh, you dont put grain in a pyramid because itss solid. They didnt have large structural b bms in those days. Youve done a political trick here. You have referenced every negative connotation connotation to dr. Carson. You must believe hes a threat to the polls and that these are serious. I think serve a threat to me. I like a lot of these people, i respect them, i think everybody is a threat but nobody will be able to do a job i do. Nobody will make America Great again. Nobody will take ay jobs from china andndring them b bk to this country, india and many otherer places, japan. Nobody will be able to do that. But i view in terms of the election, im number one in the polls. I was number one qualifying for the fox debate. I was in the pole position as they call it. But i everybody is a threat. Let me ask you something about your book. Because i think in order to restore trust with the American People i think you have to be putting out your plans, you have to put it on paper and you said this in your book crippled america. They have been claiming i vent put out enough specifics. Theres a goo reason for this and it fits perfectct with my verall philosophy with leadership. There are a lot of different voices and interests that have to be considered when working toward solutions. This involves getting people into a room a negotiating in that room to get everybody on the same page. In our own polling, the American People pick a president they want to see compromise. Dont you owe it to republican stances on paper, more of them . Put your plans and details on paper . We know they might change but show us your work. Ve done at. Ive come out with a tax plan, very detailed. Ive come out with the vets to make them happy and healthy. You havent told us how mexico will pay with this wall. Il tell you right now. We have a trade imbalance with 45 billion with mexico every year. We give mexico billions of dollars a year. The wall is going to cost 6 billion or 7 billion. If i build it. If somebody else builds it will cost 20 billion. The tariffs. So we e an build a magnififent walllland we can spend 7 billion. Not the kind of numbers im hearing and when you have a trade imbalance of 40 billion or 45 billion a year, its really easy to negotiate that deal, chuck, that i can tell you. Now, the other politicians wont they dont a clue about negotiation. Its easy. Think of it, a trade imbalance of 40 to 45 mexico and that doesnt include the drugs that pour into our country. Thats exclusive of drugs. So youre saying tataffs will ay for this . And by the way no, im not saying ththt. Ill get mexico to pay for it one way or the other, i guarantee you that. With mexico. The mexican people. Youre seeing in nevada i won the poll with hispanics. But the leaders are taking advantage of our leaders because our leaders are not smart people, theyre incompetent, frankly frankly. Two quick questions. A new book by george bush says you called up lee atwater and said vet me for vp. Lee was a friend of mine. He came to me when i was quite ung and he saidyoud be a great vice presesent . I said tell me about it. Thought i was starting to build my empire. I guess i was in t`e midst of it and frankly lee said youd be great and you should do it. You shld do it. I want to get back to you. And we talked about it on two occasions but nothing came of it. Quickly on snl, theres always a line on these things. Do you think theres some people that question how serious you are about running for president. Does hosting saturday night live ununermine how serious you are . Ll, if you look every litician not ery, but just about every politician has gone on saturday night live. Its very icon yichblgt i didic. I did it 11 years ago, the apprentice was number one and i did it. Hillary was on two weeks ago and hosting it is a bigger deal than doing a single skit. I had a fantastic time doing it. I think it will get tremendous ratings. Thats what theyre saying already and its a big success for nbc. Chuck, because i think it was a big success f f nbc. O you think you should have taken the protesters more seriououy . No, not at all. Do you know before the show there were very few of them there. A handful. I think there are more people protesting i favor of me than against me. And before the show started, everybody left. You know why . They went home to watch it. So you were comfortable with larry david mocking the protests . Well, not only comfortable, it was something i had to agree to and i loved it. I thought it was great. Larry got up and he said certain things and i fully that was part of the script. It was funny and the place wawa roaring. I can tell you inside the studio they were roaring. We had a good time and its not a question of that. Zou know, im doing great with hispanics, chuck. Im winning so many different areas with hispanics. I employ thousands of hispanics. Ill bring jobs back for hispanics and well win the hispanics. You watch. Donald trump, i believe we have a facetoface coming up soon. I know were close to figuring that out. I look forward to it. Very good. Thank you, chuck. So long. Let me move to the other side of the aisle, democratic president ial candidate number two in the polls nypd senator from vermont. Senator bernie sasaers. Senator, w wcome back to meet the press. Let me k you about thth ben carson stuff because you have seen people leak out stuff you wrote 30 and 40 years ago. Is this fair game . No. Look, i listened to the interview with dr. Carson and its interesting. But you know what, chuck . The American People want to know why the middleclass of this country is disappearing. Why we have 47 Million People living in poverty. Why we have massive i iome and wealth inequality. When you look at dr. Carson, toto the beses of my knowledge, this man does notot believe that Climate Change is caused by humanhue human activity. He wants to abolish medicare and give huge t breaks to the rich. I think it might be a better idea i know its a crazy idea but maybe we focus on the issues impacting the American People and what candidates are saying rather than just spending so much time exploring their lives 306 30 or 40 years ago. I think the reason so many people are turned off to the political process has to do with the fact were not talking about real issues impactctg real people. You have been v vy consistent about this and its an admirable part of your campaign. In fact, you have made it clear. You didnt want to go after Hillary Clinton. Let me play the many times you said that. I am not going to g into t media game, andrea, of attacking, making personal attacks against Hillary Clinton. I just am not going to do that. I dont think thats what the American People want. If i were to start viciously attacking Hillary Clinton it would be all over the front pages of the paper. But i dont do that. I mean, i happen to respect and like Hillary Clinton so i dont get into personal attacks. You know that. Senator, something seemed to o change. A bostonnlobe interview w u said i disasaee with hillary cliion on virtually everything. The wall street journal you said consistency on such issues does speak to the character of a person. Then you talked about the email which is at the debate you said youre tired of her damn emails then you said let the investigation proceed unimpeded. Are you backing traing . Do you want to target Hillary Clinton the person . No, chuck, this is media stuff. My views on her emails are what i said in the debate and right after the debate. The American People are sick and tired of seeing on the front pages emails. They want a discussion on real issues. There is an investigation ongoing, i have nothing do with it, thats that. Bubu my views on that haveve not changed. In terms of disagreeing with Hillary Clinton yeah, i do, mono, many issues. What i understand politics and elections to be about is to discuss differences of opinion. I intend to do that and do that vigorously. That does not mean im making personal attacks against somebody i respect. I disagree with Hillary Clinton on whether or not we should break up the large Financial Institutions in this country. I dont have a super pac, she does have a super pac. We have many different points of view and i will discuss those vigorously. One of the things you poioied out is consistency, you believe that matters. S. Whats wrong we involving on issues . Theres nothing wrong. Everybody evolves on issues. Nothing wrong with that, but if you look at the important issues facing this country, going back to 02, who made the analysis . Who looked at what bush and cheney were saying on the war in iraq . Its one thing to evolve and say i made a mistake. Its another thing to analyze the information and say i think that war is a terrible mistake. In terms of trade, i am glad that in recent months hillary on the keystone pipeline. On the transpacific partnersrsp. Shessaking a step forward on marijuana. Not far enogh in terms of getting the federal government, seeing it illegal. But what people want to know is who v leadership. Who was there in 1996 in terms of ma, the defense of marriage act. So what i think the issue is, who is prepared under difficult circumstances when its not necessarily popular to make decisions which are the right decision rather than 20 years later say well, you know, maybe i was wrong. Or maybe ive got to rethink that. Well, i iad moree i want to discuss. Were compactct today but senator sanders, lways a pleasure to haveou on, sir. Be safe on the trail. Okay. Thanks very much. When we come back, the panel will be here to discuss all that weve heard from ben carson, trump, and Bernie Sanders. What a week and what a day. I was ready to serve. I just gotten married. Welcome back to our panelists, radio talk show host hugh hewitt whose show has become a necessary for republican candidates. Rachel maddow who hosted a debate on friday, again ifill and mark caputo, nobody owns the political space in florida like mark with rubio and jeb bush so thanks for coming up. Go canes. Go canes. Now we know what this is really about. Exactly. Hugh, let me start with what you heard from dr. Carson. I think hes going to go gotthe media is being unfair route does it work for him . To quote drn kissinger, it has the additional benefit o being true. his objection to this week is there were four scandal bus two were reported. Marco rubio does not have a scandal, hillary had her nondisclosure agreement revealed at the washington freebie con and reuters obtained a letter from the teneo group refusing to answer questions about Hillary Clinton. So there were four scandals, two real involving Hillary Clinton, one about ben carson, west point, not a andal, heavily memeia and the one a aut marco why is it not important . I have no doubt someone at the rotc said to ben carson well get you in. Because it was common in the 70s and the 80s. But hes sort of a obviously hes a very distinguished retired surgeon. Since retiring hes basically a professional autobiography and thats what he does, he sells and sells and sells and sells his autobiography. There are a lot of things, the most dramatic things in his autobiography, all of which are favorable to him and helped sell himself assthis azing person who should be president cannot bbcorroborated includingngthe factual stament that you cannot get a full scholarship. Directed a missions are full scholarships. No pays. Its not like he got offered to west point and had to pay when other people would have to. Thats the impression he gave. Heres my question. If you get into yale and you are an rotc student, do you doubt you need to go to west point by directed a mitt. Do you really doubt that happen . What i doubt is a person ought to be president on the basis of their autobiography when they sell that to the country as i was offered a full scholarship west point and i turned it dowow. You werent offered a full scholarship to west point, nobody gets a full scholarship to weststoint and if youre selling yourself, youre not telling it truthfully. Gwen, youve been on the trail a long time over the years. Personal stories. I go toesz me the danger for dr. Carson is the fact that his candidacy is built on biography and honesty. It is built on saying this is who i am, these are my bootstraps and we all admire that. Interesting thing about the outsiders we talk about so much is that they all seem surprised on what it takes to run for president. And what it takes is scrutiny. When dr. Carson says theres never been scrutiny like directed at him, hats just not. I think imean, we wee all through the whole thing with killing ben foster. With the airstrip in arkansas, still were talking about Barack Obamas birth certificate years after he was president. Theres always the scrutiny and each and every one of those times those folks hated it. They complained. They felt like victims and of course this is the way dr. Carson, who has great selfregard, as he deserves to because he accomplished his objection is the double standard. There is a story, mrs. S. Clinton is not beiei covered and clinton would say there was a report saying the two emails that were supposed to be classified were not classified and nobody covered that. Mark id rather just watch them. I know, i know. [ laughter ] see why we put them next to each other . Patented dynamic. The most fun is that theyre so civil which is a reminder that that is what at least mark, you had the marco rubio story that hugh just brought up and it does go to the the head scratcher there was it was like a nonissue but what took him so long. Theres a few things that took them so long. Rubio in 2010, first batch of his credit cards got released, credit card statements to the Republican Party of florora were released on the behest of thengovernor Charlie Crist running against him in the senate and they made the calculation that look, these are private statements and im just going to take the hit. Years later they had the luxury of knowing that when he runs for president theyll have time to analyze his other statements and when they analyze those statements and put them together and pull the Bank Statements they realized, oh, my god, theres not much here. Theres only 65,000 in spending over two years as the head of the Florida House campaigns which is not a lot of money. So they made the calculation that well hold off until the appropriate time and let the Donald Trumps of the world say this is going to be a disaster. It was a setup. I ttnk it was a setup. Thats whatat was goingngo ask. So you believe this was that was part ofit. I think its part of the marco rubio strategy. I put it in my story that i wrote. When you look at the hype that built it up and then you look at the expenses, you really have to go out of your way to make it look like a scaal. Its very smart. David rivera, the former member of congress down there who was basically chased out via scandal. Is that going to be less of a hit on him because of how this credit card thing went down . I wouldnt presume to say what will be a hit and what wont. Marco will have to answer questions about his relationship with david because david has been in trouble but has been able to avoid indictment at the state and federal level. Thats theart of this i wonder how much. There was intereststcalculationon ii going to hit the pause butt. We hav so much to cove we have the democrats. We have the bush family shakespearean drama going on there but well change lanes. After the break, the latest on the russian plane and why experts are increasingly convinced it was a bomb that took it down. Dianne feinstein will be here, what she knows. Hi watson. Annabelle, your birthday is tomorrow. Im turning seven. What did you ask for . A princess. And a pony. You like things that begin with p. I like pink frosting too. Will you have a cake . Yeah. I was too sickckto have one last year. The data your doctor shared shows yoyoare healthy. Are you a doctor . No. I help doctors identify cancer treatments. I want to be a doctor someday. I can help with that too. Watson, i like you. You never know when itll be your moment to shine. So dont trust your smile to any regular toothpaste. I was a doer. Then the chronic, widesprere pain drained my energy. My doctotoand i agreed moving more helps ease fibromyalgia pain. She also prescribed lyrica. Fibromyalgia is thought to be the result of overactive nerves. Lyrica is believed to calm these nerves. For some patients, lyrica significantly relieves fibromyalgia pain and improves physical function. With less pain, i feel better and can be more active. Lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions or suicidal thoughts or actions. Tell your doctor right away if you have these, new or worsening depression or unusual changes in mood or behavior. Or swelling, trouble breathing, rash, hives, blisters, muscle pain with fever, tired feeling or blurry vision. Common side effects are dizziness, sleepiness, weight gain and swelling o ohands, legs and f ft. Dont drink alcohol while e king lyrica. Dont drive or use machinery until you know how lyrica affects you. Those who have had a drug or alcohol problem may be more likely to misuse lyrica. Fibromyalgia may have changed things but with less pain, im still a doer. Lyrica, move forward with less fibroalgia pain. Surprise we heard you got a job as a developer its official, i work for ge what . Wow. Yeah okay. Guys, ill be writing a new language for machines so planes, trains, even hospitals can work better. Oh sorry, i was trying to put it away. Got it on n e cake. So youre going to work on a train . T on a train. On trains youre not gonna develop stuff anymore . No i am. Do you know what ge is . A Memorial Service has been taking place st. Petersburg, russia, this morning for 224 victims of that russian plane crash. We dont know what the cause of the crash was yet in egypts sinai peninsula. U. S. Officials are increasingly convinced it was downed by a bomb and attention is focusing on intercepts of chatter between an isisi affiliate in the sinai and members of a group in syria. For the latest, im joined by the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence committee, Dianne Feinstein of california. Senator, welcome back to meet the press. Good morning. Why are u. S. Officials so convinced this was a bomb . Well, i think its an emerging story. I think first of all, youve got the flight data recorder and the voice recorder that record something that could be an explosion. Secondly, its the nature of isil, i think. Isil is now in 12 countries. They do attack after attack. The forensics on the superstructure of the plane need to be donon im delighted d hearhatthe fbi will be going into the area and will participate and i believe we are sharing our information, intelligence and this is a point i want to make. It is my strong belief that the united state and our good allies should share information regarding terrorist attacks. We usually do this and its important we do this. Are you concerned were not sharing with russia because of this rivalry . Yes. My understanding is that we werent for a while but i have now heard that we are. I hope thats true. Do you believe this is a look, youve seen the intelligence. I know theres some things you cant share. But everything youve seee youve seen this stuff in the past. Do you believe it was a bomb . I think theres a strong probability it was. I cant say its dead bang certain but theres a strong probability that it was. What does this mean . Well, this means i think a very big thing for russia. This was a russian plane with russian people. Major attack. Russia is in the area. Russia is at three bases, has planes, has people. My hope is that russia will take a strong stance against isil and they are not now so doing. Most of the attacks are directed toward the moderate opposition and i think the time has come for us also to begeg to develop aa joint strategy w wth russiaia you u pe this is a wakeup dual tin . I hope its a wakeup call to putin and i hope to some extent its a wakeup call to us. I have said before and i really belive it. We will figh them now or we will fight them later. Its only a question of time. And theyre now in 12 countries. Theyve done 25 major attacks in these countries outside of syria and iraq in the last two years. This is a huge worldwide problem and weve got to play a major role, the russians should as well. If this was a bomb, it looks like the assumption is it got on via airport workers, it didnt gettn viaahe passengers. Theyeyeem to have cleared the passenenrs. The scary thing about this is do we have what do we do to screen airport workers in this country . The dea busts drug rings all the time. Theyve done a lot when it comes to airport workers smuggling drugs on planes. That tells you theres some security holes. Well, this is a very complicated area and i think Homeland Security is doing as good a job as they can. They are now tightening security. The kinds of bombs vary. The one im most worried about is the one that there have been four attempts to bring into this country and thats the one that goes through a magnetometer. The bomb makereris stillll ive andhat bomb is a recipe f f which is easy to get and it is very serious. So we need to totally be on our guard. We need to do those things that are prudent and direct and i think Homeland Security realizes that and we are toughening in those places which are important to toughen security in now. 14 months ago you said this about the president i think ive learned one thing about this president and that is hes very cautious, maybe in this instance too cautious. That had to do with syria. He obviously has made an incremental step about what he wants to do with syria with the special forces. No. The special forces are liliited. I think 50. That wont do it. If were reall going to use special operations, quick in, quick out, you have to do in the a much more comprehensive way to get at isil. This isnt just one facility. Its not one building in raqqa or somewhere else. Its many different places. The other thing that seems to be bombing alone isnt going to do it. Weve had over 7,000 sorties. Others have made sorties as well. We have made the majority of the sorties and that hasnt changed the dynamic. So i think weve got to look at those things which can be major in scope and this means put together a strategy with russia and move ahead. Senator dianene feinstein, vice chair of the intel committee, lets see if they listen to your advice. Yes, chuck, right. When we come back, why carly have to show any detailed policy when youre not confident your companys data is secure, the possibility of a breach can quickly become the only thing you think about. Thats where at t can help. At at t we monitor our Network Traffic so we can see things others cant. Mitigating risks across your business. Weve already heard from three of the main outsider candidates for president today. Yesterday i caught up with another, the former ceo of hewlettpackard, carly fiorina, and asked her why she is one of just two candidates who have yet to release a detailed tax plan, or, frankly, any p plicy plan on her webeb site. Res her answer. Well, let me disagree with the premise of your question. How often do politicians put out detailed plans . How often do they get enacted . Never. Thats the problem. Politicians put out detailed pls for all kinds of things, it never happens. But if you go to the carlyforpresident. Com web site, you can ask a question and you will see me answering the in other words, i am being held accountable. A plan anybody can write a plan. Anybody can put a plan on a web site. Its another thing to say you know what i think we need do and be held accountable for this. I think we need go from a 73,000 page taxaxcode, which is w wat we ve today with 4,00000 changes sinin 2001, we need to get it downno about three. And what that means is we need to close every loophole and lower every rate. Well, show us what youre going to do. How do we trust that is what im going to do. Show us your wok. So in other words words on a piece of paper are more accountable than words said to people looking them in the eye . I dont think so. I dont think thats what voters think because i think voters have gotten smart enough to know that plans and papers, 50point plans 10point plans, 5point plans are win by a bunch of advisors and consultants. So im perfectly prepared to be held accountable for my words and plans and i would encourage your viewers to go on the web site and d k any question they want. So we shouldnt expect a tax plan o o of you any time soon. Ive given you aax plan. Ve given youou a tax plan. It needsdso be three pages and the only way to get there is to lower every rate and close every loophole. So thats the question for you guys. Wi voters accept candidates who do not put their ideas on paper for us to see . Charmin ultra soft gets you clean without the wasteful wadding. It has comfort cushions you can see that are softer and more absorbent, and you can use up to 4 times less. Enjoy the go with charmin. Before fibromyalgia, i was on the go. I was organized. I was a doer. Then the c conic, widespread pain drained my energy. My doctor and i agreed moving moror helps ease fibromyalgia pain. Fibromyalgia is thought to bethe result of overactive nerves. Common side effects are dizziness, sleepiness, weight gain and swelling of hands, legs and feet. Dont drink alcohol while taking lyrica. Dont drive or u u machinery until you knkn how lyrica affecec you. Those who have h h a drug or alcohol l oblem may be more likelylyto misuse lyrica. Fibromyaia may have changedthings but with less pain, im still a doer. Ask your doctor about lyrica today. We are back. Its no secret that Democratic Candidates across the country have struggled at the polls since president barack obama took office. How badly have democrats been performing . Lets start with congress. Since 2009, democrats have lost a net of 13 senate seats and a whopping 69 house seatsts letssut in historiril context. You have to go back to eisenhower to mamach this many losses for a partyhat controls the white house with senate seats, 13 of them. And in the house, its been a hundred years since a twoterm losses. That was Woodrow Wilson and the democrats. 99 house seats. Lets go to the state level. With president obama, under him, democrats have lost control of 12 governorships, includeing just this past week in kentucky. Mr. Us theyve given up 30 state legislative chambers. Ready for this . Over 900 state legislative seats. No Administration Since nixon ford saw more governor and in the president s own party. Of course, there was a reason for those losses, the watergate scandal tainted republicans across the country. So you have to go back to eisenhower, again, to find more losses of state legislatures, over 1,000 back inn the 50s. Whats going on here . Why are down ballot democrats ross the country g gtting wiped out in e ection after election where Barack Obamas name is on the ballot . The explanation is democrats dont turn out if barack obama is not on the ballot. But it wasnt that long ago, rachel, that i did turn out in midterms. It wasnt that long ago, 2006, 2002 they won a bunchf governorships. Something is wrong here and you cant just blame it on, oh, democrats dont show up. Theres infrastructure. Theres whats happening is that the Democratic Party is getting smoked strategically by the Republican Party. The Republican Party made a decision to invest longterm in the place where it makes an institutional difference whether or not youre there. So the Republican Party didnt but they invested heavily, particularly in advance of the 2010 cycle in winning state legislative seats across the country that nobody in the National Press cared about. They flipped enough of them to flip enough l lgislatures to flipip the cononessional map thaha locks it inn for a dececde and republicans are thihiing that way. Democrats arent. No betetr eemple, markrk than the state of florida. A swing state that is nowhere near swing in legislative races. Right. Problems democrat have nationwide. The big thing is that the barack obama political machine and big data is a lie. The obama political machine without obama is no machine. They dont win. That was largely personality based campaign in two different cycles and i did witness at least in florida the obama machine for whatever it was it was kind of good having its consultants come down and build democrats in various races and then not win them but in addition to that they would not really do much to help. So you also had in addition to that folks not liking barack obama very much and so if you were running for office you ran away from obama and obamas people didnt run toward you to help. Letsso history here, hugh. H. It took republicans 40 years to recoverr basically from the double whammy of thehe eisenhower losses and the watergate losses. 40 years. Democrats could be waiting 40 years to recover from this legislative and they may win the white house five of the next six times. Siberia is big and they are in siberia rightow and they keep nominating bad candidates. I want to pay rachel a compliment. Ten days ago former secretary of state clinton was on your show and she said cavalierly that the v. A. Scandal was not as widespread as people thought. I thought thank you for that gift, rachel. Bernie sanders talking to you this morning made a super pac ad for every republican running for every office in detailing hillarys flips. So theyre not very good at running campaigns. Speaking of rachel, let me clinton, sanders and omalley. Take a look. I want us to use diplomacy, whicicis why i spent 18 months putting together theanctions agagast iran. However, i will not, i think its irresponsible to rule out force. To me as opposed to maybe other unnamed candidates, the issue of keystone was kind of a no brainer. It never made sense to me from day one as to why you would extract and transport some of the dirtiest fuel on this planet. Look, our contrary to Donald Trumps assertion, the enduring symbol of our country is not the barbed wire fence, its the statue of liberty. Gwen, what did you make . First of all, without sucking up overly much, rachel, you did a good job on that. Thank you for saying so. I fell in love with the format, the idea that you engage back and forth with candidates for period of times without them trying to break the rules, without them trying to change a question. And d the way, we w wuld do thths with any republblan that want to dothis. I would, too. I woulul do it. No, meme i think the one by one format if you care out if this is somewhat everybody says about policy stuff. And we can mix it up between parties, you can do that where you alternate democrat republican. You can do it one issue at a time. And you learn interesting things. Listen to Bernie Sanders say i dont want to name the names of these people was disingenuous. Of course hes talking about Hillary Clinton. You listen to Hillary Clinton say i dont want to answer your question, rachel, id prefer to have someone say i dont want to answer your question, gwen then pretend to answer Something Else. So its revealing. If were going to run campaigns as we were just talking about based on personalities, lets find out more about their personalities. Lets find out about their true transparency. I dont think we find that out in one on one on one debates with ten people on stage. I can tell you, rachel, the confidence of Hillary Clinton today versus three weeks ago is unbelievable thehehange and you n see in the bebeie sanders. Look at him, hes you know, hes getting ananous. Hes going for it. Hes more than 50 points behind in south carolina. Shes got 80 support among africanamerican democrats in south carolina. He knows where he needs to go. She just needs to run out the clock. The problem, is when Hillary Clinton tries to run out the clock its thats always when bad things happen. Thats always like a the plot twist in a law and order. Just when you think you can relax, pow. It comes. Mark and hugh, you said theres one take away from this show that you havent been able to shake and it goes back to the republican side of the race. Ben carson saying when he was interviewed he says he has Better Things to do and its very jeb bush where jeb said he had cool things to do and he might not want to do this. These candidates are acting like oh, im m g dragged in and im going go back to myplow now unless you love me. We both gassed when youped when he said that. You have to have energy and you have to want to serve. You cant be a martyr. Also listen to what we heard from carly fiorina, what we have heard from marco rubio and ben carson. Wherever theyre under attack, wherever theyre questioned they immediately say go to my web site and give me money. I wish i could do that. Ben carson sent out an email saying im under attack. Send me money. Carly fiorina mentioned her web site 85 times. I dont want to put out statements but come watch me talk and give me money. There was a certain consistency. You looked like you were going to fall over when she said that. I was surprised. Put it on paper. Whats wrong with that . Marco rubio put out a very long piece on his new defense ststtegy yesterday, ry detailed. 343 ships navy. Ats what you needed to do. And he did itit with h h tax plans. Its getting scrutinized, beaten up he did it on taxes. Why cant she. We do have speechtotext translation capability. Every time she says something, lets put it on carly letterhead and hold to it. I think e will use that to raise money today. When we come back, the one topic we havent talked about. In the end game segment, its the shakespearean nature of the bush family. But theres a bigger issue here. Not only has the Republican Party not been able to figure out what to make of the george w. Bush legacy, neither has the bush family. Well be right back. Covering youkids eyes is one wayo prevent them from seeing something ippropriate. Another way is to use Parental Controls on youtv, computers, and mobile devices to control viewing habits when youre not around. Its in your hands. The more you know. We were going to alert the affiliates and saying were going on because it feels like we should go more than an hour but this last topic, we have a little time. Theres more evidenen that neither jeb bush nor the Republican Party has worked out how to deal with the legacy george w. Bushs president. A new book by george h. W. Bush unleashed stinging criticism on bush 41 not a happy camper about rumsfeld and dick cheney. On rumsfeld he said this i think he served the president badly, i dont like what he did and i think it hurt the president having his ironass view of everything. On cheney. I dont know, he just became very hard line and very different from the dick cheney i knew and worked with. The reaction to the attacks on 9 11, what to do about the middle east again he uses this phrase you cant get enough of iron ass. [ laughter ] mark caputo, we were last week dealing with jeb bush trying to figure out how to outdistance himselff from bush. From whatever all things bush. This coulddavent come at a a worse time forr him. It gets even more awkward because this coming week we have the Republican Party is meeting for its annual or its president ial fundraiser gathering. Dick cheneys featured speaker there. Hay oh. And t en jeb showing up. So great, getting the band back together one more time to be dysfunctional. But this feels like, hugh, the Republican Party doesnt know what to do with the bush leg. I a lot dont. The best moment jeb had in the debate so far is when he said my brother kept us safe. Thats the best part of the bush legacy is that after 9 11 he did the hour of our grief speech, gave a state of the union on the axis of evil and the Republican Base wants that to be ws legacy. Hws comments about cheney and rumsfeld run into that head wind. Most of the republicans i talked to admdmed the Vice President a lot a a theres not much upside inttacking them. At do we ke the best . We like thatt these guys confirm that we suspect. We confirmed this is what h. W. Was. We also confirm that if our parents ask about years later what we thought about what we did there may be criticism. I would love to be at their thanksgiving tablend here how that conversation plays out. The personal part of this, reading meachams book, the one thing that i was surprised to feel while reading it, i had an emotional reaction to it which same Nuclear Family having a third go at the presidency. I mean, going through like all of this drama about one of our sons won his governors race and one of our sons lost, which state do we go to . I think you can get on it, george p. Bush will run for president in the next few years. You brought this up with barbara bush. Doesnt it make the no more bushes comment make more sense now . Her comment. It was about her. I think she was exhausted. Iis funny you say that. I got thh same the patriarch and matriarch are exhausted . Dynastic politics dont solve america and mrs. Clinton has the same problem jeb bush has which is this is not something we do well or often in the United States since the adams. Having been first lady is not thesame as your dad calling your brother quincy. You know what im saying . [ laughter ] its not a dynasty when youre the same age. Having bill clinton sitting on the sidelines was all of us waiting for him to say something, do something. But this is going to be that feel, mark, of the Clinton Presidency which is what does bill really think . What does bill really think . I think to rachels point about thanksgiving, jeb bush announced last time that he was probably going to go down this road of running for president after thanksgiving. This thanksgiving is going to be a big moment for the bush family because if jebs poll numbers stay at 4 50r oror5 nationalal and remain in the cellarn florida and new h hmpshire and iowa, i imagine that will be a really awkward thanksgiving. I so want an invitation. He never gets out though, right. H. W. In 1980 didnt get out of the race until may. We looked this up. These bushs are fighters. Getting out of the race at thanksgiving is it was embarrassing, it would look like a loss. So is getting out of the race or march or april. If hes going to lose, hes going to lose. Quitting now serves him thats a quitter. Right. Thats a quitter. Getting beat is on next thanksgiving. I think its important to know that one of the reasons you have to think about florida is we dont have election day in florida, we have election days. We have a month of early voting. A good 50 is cast by absentee ballots. So when you go to the polls in south carolina, youll haveve30 of the votes in i i florida so you u nt if youre going to ddp out, ifou dont do well in newewhampshire, that might be the time. So there can be different benchmarks if bushs situation remains the same. I will say this, if theres popcorn involved it will be funnier than saturday night live was last night. Wow. I had to get that in there. Before we go, i think this might be the most vicious negative ad ever. Ever. Let show it. T choice for governor couldnt be more clear. John bel edwards answered our countrys called and served as a ranger there the 82nd air born division. Or david vitter who answered a prostitutes call minutes after he skipped a vote honoring 28 soldiers who gave their lives in defense of our freedom. David vitter chose prostitutes over patriots. Now the choice is yours. Whoa. Hugh and glennave seen it. Mark and rachel have not. I love louisiana. The best attack ad before this was out of louisiana four or five years ago which was a coroners race where they actually acted out a or or movie where a coroner was accused of selling body parts with igor. I wanted to fact check it. Theyre saying h chose prostitutes after patriots not over. Politico would give that a half true. I have to leave it there. Thats all we have for today. Well be back next week because press. E following is a paid presentation for the nutri ninja ninja blender duo featuring the latest autoiq technology, brought to you by europro. Ninja turn on your life. I feel vibrant. Amazing. Fantastic. Incredible. Whoo i feel focused. I feel energetic. And i feel more alive than i have in a long time. Announcer why are all these people so excited . I have that energy that i had so long ago. I just feel so much more focused
