You know when. The. Or. Or. I'm here or there ever or old car owner. Or are. There there have been an advantage in the. Event money couldn't. Do. Anything to. You to. Going back to February 19th 42 there are the Mills Brothers and dreams Ville Ohio I don't know if that's ever been reissued anywhere we spent a good portion of the last year burning it to cd a lot of the 70 eight's that were never reissued things that were tried but didn't turn out to be very popular Mills Brothers to get us started on this 5th and final hour blues before sunrise it's the blues heritage showcase I mean host Steve Cushing we're going to step down into the alley a little later on we've got Magic Sam Junior Wells Little Milton But 1st we take time out to listen to the soul breakfast it's a mood set that explores the area that jazz and blues share in common this weekend in. Turly new entirely new soul breakfast with never played any of these on the program before we're going to start out with Turner man I Quebec teamed with an organist Freddie Roach this is a piece called Just one more chance half. On Who are. Come. On. And breakfast is served there is I quote back on tenor Freddie Roach on the organ Milt Hinton non-base Alhurra wood on the drums that's the title track to a cd called heavy soul on the Blue Note label And that wraps up our soul breakfast for this week ironically it also led off the so perfect this this week we listen to another track from that same cd called Just one more chance from November of 1961 I quit back and Freddie Roach we listened to Al Hibler singing with Duke Ellington in the orchestra and that's from a series of broadcasts throughout the 1940 s. That were done for the u.s. Treasury it's called the Us Treasury series yes that makes sense and one of the popular tunes at the time I guess Frank Sinatra had the big hit with this also Jo Stafford if you are a an old timer you'll remember long ago and far away Al and Duke Ellington in the orchestra did their version May of 1944. We also listen to something pretty unexpected a thing called Lonesome lover from February 1962 this is way off track for me it's Max Roach in his band featuring the woman that I believe was his wife Abbey Lincoln did some vocals I've I've heard vocals by Abbey Lincoln before that are sort of out there or they're really on the edge. And some stark sounds but I like this one a lot there was a 16 voice chorus together with Abbey Lincoln on the vocals it's called Lonesome lover from February 1962 so I quit back Freddie Roach l Hibbler with Duke Ellington Abbey Lincoln with Max Roach and then again I quit back and Freddie Roach our soul breakfast here on blues before sunrise I'm your host Steve and. I think when we let off the hour we played something by the Mills Brothers again these came from the sides that were originally on 78 that I burned a cd some of them sound like they were on 78 others sound fairly clean but I made a point of playing them over the last year during our number one I thought it would be fun this morning to pick up a handful of the ones that I liked a bit again these are all from the 1940 s. It's the Mills Brothers. Do very close. To. Their normal one bird you little to now and then there. Should be then it. Would be wrong to. Do the bit at a time not try. To where to let it. Every minute. I go back to some. Great good it would be good to fit there's no one but me to do for I know down. There is no one but you. Know Mary in times of our tractor go away for an hour on break aware but air every time. I go back to stare it was the. Very thing it would be good if there's no one but me for I know now. There's no one bird you. There's no one but you. Know who won but you. Job. You. Told there were 4 while on the. Fool. Yeah there are the Mills Brothers again these are sides that I burned a cd there I only have them in my collection on 78. And I thought it would be handier to use if I put them all on a couple of C.D.'s we listen to wish I had a brand new heart a can't find a date for that one look through the discarded free at length then we listen to there's nobody but you from March of 1946 and find the Old Black Joe Mills Brothers from March of 1940 you're tuned to blues before sunrise I'm Steve Cushing time to step into the alley with Magic Sam. A Little Milton on the bobbin label out of e's St Louis from 1959 have the same old blues before that Magic Sam for the cobra label here in Chicago 1957 recording Love me with the feeling I hate to put the rap on the program this week we've got roughly about 15 minutes 12 minutes worth of music to send in your direction that we'd pick some records that I don't get around to very often you know how many of you have in your collection records by Junior Wells during the time that he was signed to the mercury label based here in Chicago I've got to album sear pick a few tracks from the 1st one will listen to and grab them both here is Junior Wells you're tough enough including the hit up in here on the blue rock label that was an affiliate blues affiliate for mercury and then there are sides at least one side Jr Well sings live at the Golden Bear also on the Mercury blue rock label Let's start it with the hit they say this is a thing called up in here Junior Wells on Mercury. Long as. He arrived at let. Me. Go Yeah there was Junior Wells at the Golden Bear I have no idea where the Golden Bear was was out on the West Coast was that the in Chicago there he is with me mama September 1968 they don't list any personnel on this. And before that we listen to 3 signs off an album again you're tough enough Junior Wells including up in here not here here 80 age they say that was done in August of 1966 and then 2 other sides from the LP messin with the kid Jr reworking one of his hits and the hippies are trying which with reworked lyrics sounded an awful lot like it hurts me to they say that those were done in 1966 but I have my doubts because Jr was talking about the hippies and flower children and that didn't hit until the summer of 67 so I'm guessing it was either fall a 67 or early in 1968 but all of those sides were heard on the Mercury blue rock label 1st year tough enough on the blueline rock label and then Jr Well sings live at the Golden Bear also on the blue rock label which was an affiliate of the mercury label based here in Chicago guess what that's got it for our program for this week it's a blues before sunrise I'm Steve coaching will be back again next week at the same time to blow the dust off of more of the forgotten sounds in blues heritage make plans to join me then tell them I'm going to leave you with Albatross and I'm outta here. Songs and not just tumbled it. All just saying you should go with Gregory Allen Isaac of joins us on the next mountain stage along with mandolin and orange Bush kids the brother brothers and the lesion fields hey this is Gregory Allen as a call to join us this week in live performance amounts to Sunday at 2 pm on f.m. 91 point one.
