Exodus Chapter 21st is 2 and 3 I am the Lord God which have brought the out of the land of Egypt and this commandment he acknowledges that we have created many other gods many other reasons for the choices we make we make choices based on the desires of our hearts we eat certain foods because we desire particular tastes we wear certain clothes because we desire to give a particular impression on the perceptions of others some of us desire to stand out in a crowd and some of us prefer to make more subtle or noticeable impressions we choose to apply for job openings based on our thoughts of how the benefits or satisfy our desires the position offered may involve tasks that we enjoy doing having children our frequent visits had a doctor may move us to seek employment that provides medical insurance with a particular plan most commonly we desire a salary that allows us to afford the luxury of our other desires. Which may motivate us to get a better education or to improve some other aspect of our lives this is probably the most powerful manmade God of all money is a big motivator for many of us it's what we use to acquire the things we desire it's what we use to buy the things we need or the things we think we need money is what we use to support the people we love however in Matthew chapter 6 1st 26 Jesus identifies the conflict that money stirs up there are many great things that money can do but there is one dangerous thing that we need to be aware of in Matthew chapter 6 verse 24 Jesus says no man can serve 2 masters for either he will hate the one and love the other or else he will hold to the one and despise the other he cannot serve God and Mammon Mammon is translated from the Greek word that means well Money itself is not evil but as 1st Timothy 6 1st 10 say. The love of it is the root of all evil there are countless television shows that have people willingly make fools of themselves in order to win some monetary prize this love for money will cause them to even offend those they love much less people who they've never met but money isn't the only god that competes with the one true Creator God. Though all others point to it for some people they're fine without money except they needed to serve their god of drugs or alcohol. Some people are even addicted to food some people make their work their God and the sad thing is that some of these people work in ministry I've come across times where I've been tempted by my ministry seeking to do everything I can out of my own efforts using the excuse that this is for God but without actually seeking God in the business of the ministry it is easy to neglect God in Luke Chapter 10 versus 38 through 42 we learn of a friend of Jesus who was like this her name was Martha in Luke Chapter 10 versus 38 through 42 the Bible says. Now it came to pass as they went that he entered into a certain village and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house and she had a sister called Mary which also sat at Jesus' feet and heard his word but Martha was cumbered about much serving and came to him and said Lord dust down not care that my sister has left me to serve alone bid her therefore that she help me and Jesus answered and said unto her Martha Martha. Aren't careful and troubled about many things but one thing is needful and Mary had chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her motto was so close to God yet completely missing the blessings my God was my family. And that sounds harmless but the reality is that anything that comes between us and our heavenly Father is what stands in the way of the eternal life God sacrificed his life for Jesus said in Matthew Chapter 10 and verse 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me when I became a father I didn't think it was possible to love anyone more in my mind there was no greater love than the one a parent has for their child it's the kind of love that Jesus spoke of in John 15 verse 13 where one lays their life down for another he says in John 15 1st 13. Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends what great love that we have from God who has laid his life down for us in verse 14 he says he are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you he laid his life down for those of us who are willing to obey his commands and are willing to become his friends when I found out that I was going to be a father I realized that every decision I made from then on was going to affect the life of my child I willingly laid down the desires of my life for the needs of my child this great love would continue to grow as my family grew However my frustrations will grow as well Genesis chapter one verse $27.00 explains the 1st part of why my frustrations grew . Genesis Chapter 2 verses 25 and 3 verse 7 and chapter 3 verse 7 shine light on the 2nd part Genesis chapter one verse 27 says So God created man in his own image in the image of God created he him male and female created He them in verse 26 he says let us make man in our likeness God had made man in His likeness we were made in the likeness of God and Genesis 2 verse 25 says and they were both naked the man and his wife and were not ashamed God's righteous glory covered them making their nakedness shameless God's likeness was in us then in Genesis 3 Verse 6 our 1st parents acted against God's command to refrain from eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the next verse says and the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sued figleaves together and made themselves a prince God's righteous glory was removed his righteousness no longer covered them so they became ashamed more than the us his likeness in our heart was removed as well and because he is infinite there's a hole in our hearts that we continuously try to fill with our finite gods as I struggled to love my family without him who is love the whole in my heart continued an emptiness just says If I were trying to fill it with all the luxuries some of us continue to do. Loving my family and growing in that love was putting me closer and closer to God but every time I neglected to read His Word or to seek his counsel I was pushing him away and making it harder for me to do what was right for my family now when I make God the priority of my life I am an instrument of love that he can use to show all who I come in contact with what his love is like and I can truly and righteously love my family without any frustration from an emptiness in my heart God fills the hole in our hearts to overflowing there is a Divine Peace that gets put in our hearts that no matter how difficult the struggle is no matter how sore for the circumstances are staying focused on his love for us and focusing on loving him gives us the strength we need to continue loving those around us even when we're hurting or angry I continuously pray that I can love those around me as he loves them because only that kind of love can make a difference I have been set free from the struggle of trying to fill the void in my heart that's what God meant in the 1st part of his 1st Commandment when he spoke of bringing his people out of the house of bondage he was speaking to us about freeing us from our bondage to other gods bondage to money bondage to possessions to status to obligation to family. He was speaking of freeing us from our bondage to selfishness. When report our love for Him 1st we can remember that he is the one that provides all that we need money is no longer the God of our lives we are no longer tied down to work in our sweat blood and tears for something that only temporarily satisfies our desires rather we are free to expend that infinite blessings of love and joy on our loved ones are quaintance us and even on our enemies when we love him 1st we are more capable to love others it is no wonder that in Matthew $22.00 when Jesus was asked which is the greatest commandment he said that the 1st and great commandment is to love God with all that we are the Bible says in Matthew chapter $22.00 verses $34.00 through 40 but when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence they were gathered together then one of them which was a lawyer asked him a question tempting him and saying Master which is the great commandment and the Law Jesus said unto him the hour shower love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all that I saw and with all their mind this is the 1st and great commandment and the 2nd is like unto it Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself on these 2 commandments hang all the law and the prophets when we put God 1st in our lives. We are then able to keep all the commandments to love our neighbors as we love ourselves our nature is selfish. We are born slaves to sin we are born with the inheritance of death and it shapes our thoughts to be selfish in the chair there's a saying that there are only 2 guarantees in life death and taxes I'm sure that some people may be able to evade taxes but not one of us is capable of avoiding death and death has a way of gripping us every moment of our lives especially when we have just experienced a death in the family the reality of death shapes our decisions with the fact that we are not guaranteed tomorrow we make decisions based on the possibility that we will one day die but God has again victory over death is by accepting Christ sacrifice on the cross as an atonement for our sins if we accept his word when he said he became man lived righteously in complete faithfulness to love and truth and died without deserving it we will share his victory he strives to restore us to His will to give us what Titus Chapter one Verse 2 says he intended for us from before the world was created in Titus chapter one and verse 2 The Bible says in the hope of eternal life which God that cannot lie promised before the war began. God's intention for us was to live in eternity without all the pains sorrows and frustrations that death brings and his plans are sure the only ones that can prevent his plans for us are ourselves he loves us so truly and completely that he will respect our choices he would do all the he can to motivate us to do what he knows is best for us so that we can be restored and have victory over death with him but he will always allow us to make the choice for ourselves he will not force us 1st John chapter 4 verse 8 says that he is a God who is the complete expression of love the Bible says in 1st John chapter 4 and verse 8 he that loveth not know with not God For God is love Where is love when choices do not exist he may know what our decisions will be and he may guide the circumstances around us but he still allows us to make the choices his choice is to save us from death to give us eternal life to give us victory over sin and selfishness He died for we need to decide what our choice will be will we serve Him will we love Him in return of his sacrifice will we accept His sacrificial love will read choose His perfect will to break free from our bondage to selfishness sin and death will we believe his word. These choices are our own to me we need to choose to be selfless not selfish and the enemy works to distract us from making the right choices our inheritance of death defaults our choices to the selfish desires of our sin stained hearts the enemy has studied mankind since he tempted our 1st parents to bring death into this world just as easy as we are able to predict the actions of our loved ones and certain situations he can do just as well if not better he uses our desires to tempt us away from God But if we choose to trust God enough to put him 1st there are divine blessings godly strength perfect love true peace when I decided to let God be the lord of my life I was at the crossroads of my family being completely stripped from me I was sure that my then fiance was decided on giving up on our relationship and set on taking our kids from me and rightfully so I was terrified that when I told her that I decided to put God 1st in my life she would be confirmed in her decision to leave. But God had guided the circumstances in our lives to allow her to witness the great difference he has made in my life in just a short period of time. Inspired her through me to accept the God of the Bible in her life and a few months later after years of engagement and wavering between decisions we had 0 our commitment to him and to each other in marriage and then in the baptism. I praise God for the great testimonies he grabs us when we step out in faith. Let's pray. They're having a fiver Thank you. And as a consequence they decided to go off and attack this little village called Ai and they were severely routed and the whole business we looked at and it was narrowed down to the casting of lots to this family and this man taken who had taken some of the plunder from Jericho now the Lord was saying you know don't take any of the planned plunder because it wasn't theirs to have it wasn't their victory it was the Lord's victory and this was going to ruin the whole lesson so it was a real problem and finally then after a lot of. Consecration rededication to the Lord the Lord says Ok you want to be taken it needs to be taken and I will be with you but you have to follow my plan and so Joshua had been given some instructions and it says in Joshua chapter 8 verse 9 Joshua sent his soldiers off he sent them off and they went to a place of ambush and they lay in wait between Bethel and Ai to the west but just was spent that night with the people all right early the next morning Joshua mustered his men that he in the leaders of Israel marched before them to Ai entire force that was with him and marched up approach the city and arrived in front of it and they set up camp north of Ai with the valley between them and the city Joshua had taken about 5000 men and set them in ambush between Beth Bethel and Ai to the west of the city and they had the soldiers take up their position all those in the camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it that Joshua then Joshua went into the valley that night. And when the king of a I saw this he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the. But he did not know that an ambush had been set up against him behind the city and Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back before them and they fled to the desert and all the men of Ai were called to pursue them and they pursued Joshua and were hurried and were lured away from the city and not a man remained in a Bethel who did not go after Israel. So that if the city open and went in pursuit of Israel for safety then the Lord said to Joshua hold out towards ai the javelin that is in your hand for into your hand I will deliver the city and so Joshua held out his javelin toward Ai and as soon as he did this the men in the ambush rose quickly from their position and rushed forward and they entered the city captured it and quickly set it on fire now the men of Ai look back and they saw the smoke of the city rising against the sky but they had no chance to escape in any direction for the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the desert had turned back against their pursuers so you know the Lord is giving Joshua the city yesterday's defeat became today's victory as a lesson for us and that once sin is dealt with forgiveness and victory lie ahead you see with God's direction we don't have to stay discouraged or burdened with guilt no matter how difficult a setback sin may bring to our lives we must renew our efforts to carry on God's Will Well it says. As that in verse 21 for when Josh won all this role saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from the city they turned around to pack the men of Ai and the men of the ambush came also out of the city against them so they were caught in the middle with this reliance on both sides and His will cut them down leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives but they took the king of a are alive and brought him to Joshua when Israel had finished off all the men of Ai in the fields and in the desert where they had chased them and when every one of them had been put to the sword all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it 12000 men and women fell that day all the people of Ai for Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin until he had destroyed all who lived in ai But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of the city as the Lord had instructed Joshua So Joshua Byrne day I made it permanent he prefer runs a desolate place to this very day and he hung the king of a on a tree and left him there into leaving at sunset Joshua ordered them to take his body from the tree and throw it down the end to the entrance of the city gate and they raise a large pile of rocks over it which remains to this very day now look the altar was built out of uncut stones so it would not be profaned and it would be used to build something and this would prevent the people from worshipping altars like idols or worshipping the craftsmanship of the workers rather than the great works of God Well in verse 30 of Joshua chapter 8 it says Joshua built on Mount Abel an altar to the Lord the God of Israel as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites and so he built it according to what is written. In the book of the Law of Moses an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool had been used and on it they offered to the Lord burnt offerings and sacrificed fellowship offerings and there in the presence of the Israelites Joshua copied on stones the Law of Moses like I suppose an abbreviation of it which he had written at all Israel's aliens and citizens alike with their elders officials and judges were standing on both sides of the Ark of the covenant of the Lord facing those who carried it and the priests who were Levites and half of the people stood in front of them out your Aseem and half of them in front of not evil and as Moses a servant of the Lord had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel so there was continue it a continuation of the command but also of the traditions and of the messages which have been given to leadership for 34 says afterward Joshua read all the words of the law the blessings and the curses just as it is written in the book of the law it wasn't as the 10 Commandments you know these were the various things of the Torah and there was not a word of all that Moses had commanded the Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel including the women and children in the aliens who lived among them. So now we go to Jeff tr 9 and we're going to see that you know the people that lived in Canaan or Palestine were not going to give in easily to this invading group of desert dwellers who had escaped from Egypt it says in chapter 9 of Joshua verse one now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things. Those in the hill country in the Western foothills and along the entire coast of the great sea as far as Lebanon the kings of the Hittites Amorites count Canaanites parasites have ites and which is lights or they came together to make war against Joshua and Israel so they formed an alliance right however when the people of give Ian heard what Joshua had done to Jericho on Ai they resorted to a ruse scam because story they went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn out sacks and old wine skins cracked and mended and the men put worn and patch sandals on their feet and world clothes and all the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy and then they went to Joshua in the camp of gal and said to him and the men of Israel we have come from a distant country make a treaty with us. Well the men of Israel said to the him. But perhaps you live near us how then can we make a treaty with you we are your servants they said to Joshua but just to ask Who are you but you come from and they answered your servants have come from a distance country because of the fame of your larger God for we have heard reports on him and all that he did in Egypt and all that he did to the 2 kings of the Amorites castes east of Jordan cyan king of Fresh Pond and August king of the Shon who reigned in Asteroth and our elders and all those living in our country said to us take provisions for your journey go and meet them and say to them we are your servants make a treaty with us this bread of ours was warm and we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you but now see how dry and moldy it is and these wines skins that we filled were new but see how cracked they are and our clothes and sandals are worn out by this very long journey. And the men of Israel sample their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord Lord and said Watch out right 1st 15 then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath Well let's stop here for a minute. It says here that when the leaders sampled these men's provisions they saw that the bread was dry and mold in the wines is cracked in the clothes and sounds worn out but he didn't see through the deception and after the promise that had been made in the treaty ratified the facts begin to come out we're going to see Israel's leaders had been deceived and God had specifically Reese instructed the Israelites to make no treaties with the inhabitants of Canaan and since way back and as recorded in Exodus 23 and Exodus 34 and around me well anyways as a strategist Joshua knew enough to talk to God before leading his troops into battle but the peace treaty seemed innocent enough and so Joshua and the leaders of Israel made this decision on their own you see by failing to seek God's guidance and rushing ahead and with their own plans they had to deal with angry people and awkward alliances they made a mistake folks but because they had given an oath to protect the given knights they would keep their word all right we've got to be careful what promises we make and what decisions that we make without prayer and and consultation and meditation on the Lord All right let's see what happened here well it says. In verse 163 days after they made this treaty with the give unites the Israelites heard that they were neighbors living near them. And so the Israelites set out and on the 3rd day came to the to their city's European cafe or a beer off and carrots germ but the Israelites did not attack them because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord the God of Israel and the whole assembly grumbled against their leaders see moaning about the government is nothing new but all the leaders answered We have given them our oath by the Lord the God of Israel and we can't touch them now this is what we will do then we will let them live so that wrath will not follow us for breaking the oath we sort of them they continued let them live but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the entire community and so the leaders promise to them was in fact kept then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said Why did you deceive us by saying We live a long way from you while actually lived near us you're now under a curse you'll never cease to service woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God and they answer Joshua your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all of its inhabitants from before you so we feared for our lives because of you and that's why we did this so we're now in your hands do to us whatever seems good and right to you Josh will save them from the Israelites and they didn't kill them that day he made to give me a night's woodcutters and water carriers for the community and for the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose and that is what they are to this day now as a lot of gaps here again use you figure them out already how did they hear all about this stuff about Egypt and the God of Israel helping them through these 40 years and all that sort of thing I don't know I suppose there were travellers back then. Any kind of news or information. Was carried forth by travellers and traders and that sort of thing it's hard to know we the Bible gives so many details some times tedious details about certain things and then kind of leaves big gaps but it was understandable to the people of the Book of Joshua and the other early books of the Scripture were to the people because they knew the history had been passed down to them and they knew perhaps all of these stories and and and information that. Were not written down well maybe someday we'll find out but let's see what we have happens next something happens here which again is very unusual and has been discussed to this very day it is Chapter 10 of Joshua now I don't as attic king of Jerusalem so there must have been some kind of community in what became Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it doing to and it's Kings as he had done to Jericho and it's King and that the people of give me and give me and had made a treaty of peace with Israel and were living near them and he and his people were very much alarmed at this because given was an important city like one of the royal cities it was larger than a I and all of its men were good fighters and so I dony king of Jerusalem appealed to home king of Hebrew pure I'm king of Jerome. Jeffy king of Lake ish and dear king of England and said Come and help me attack given because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites are yours with a plot thickens it doesn't verse 5 and Chapter 10 then the 5 kings of the Amorites the kings of Jerusalem he brought on. John muffle the lake and Egland joined forces and they moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it and they give you night sent word to Joshua in the camp of kill gal do not abandon your service come to us quickly and save us help us because all the m.r.i. Kings from the whole country have joined forces against us treaties get countries in trouble it's how we got into the 1st World War and all the strange treaties that were made in the Middle East between the wars I mean what a mess history is interesting but it hasn't changed much from for thousands of years either the. The lessons of the warnings Well Josh one verse 7 says and marched up from Gilgo with his entire army including all the best fighting men and the Lord said to Joshua Do not be afraid of them I have given them in your hand not one of then will be able to withstand you all right so after all I March from go gal Joshua took them by surprise and the Lord threw them into confusion before Israel who defeated them a great victory at Gibeon Now look this alliance of enemy kings from the south it actually helped just with his army because the enemies had united to attack Gibeon and Joshua didn't have to spend the time and resources to wage a separate campaign against each fortified city represented in this kind of coalition so Joshua confidently confronted the coalition of armies and defeated them in a single battle because he trusted God to give Israel the victory Joshua's response this time showed his integrity didn't I mean after having been deceived by the Gibeonites Joshua and the leaders could have been very slow about their attempts to rescue them in order to punish them but instead they immediately responded to the call for help. Well sometimes we need to respond quickly to help someone who may even have to Seaview your thought about that even though you had forgiven him or her we should take our word just a seriously as Joshua did but what happened was this Meanwhile back in the Middle East Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Herat and cut them down all the way to and Ada and they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth around to his Ika and the Lord hurled large hail stones down on them from the sky and more than died from they all stones and were killed by the swords of the Israelites and on the day that the Lord gave the Emirates over to Israel Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel Oh son stand still over Gibeon Oh moon over the valley of Aijalon and so the sun stood still and the moon stopped till the nation avenged itself out of its enemies as it is written in the Book of Jasher All right 1st of all we don't have the Book of Jasher but it's was probably a history book of events that that happened it's also mentioned in 2nd Samuel So anyways the question asks I mean here we are in the 21st century know a little bit about science even though you slept through most your classes in high school on it how did the sun stand still while of course in relationship to the earth the sun was always standing still it's the earth the travels around the sun but the terminology that's used here in Joshua shouldn't cause us to doubt that the Lord was with them we are not confused when someone says the sun rises sets even of the sun does not rise or set it's the earth does all this but the point is that the day was prolonged not that God used a particular method of prolonging it. God gave him the victory that is the explanation though 2 explanations have been given by some for how this event occurred. Could be have slowing the earth's normal rotation giving Joshua more time as the Hebrews language seems to indicate not so sure about that maybe it was just that. The sun's rays were given additional hours of light regardless of how God's chosen method though the Bible's clear that the day was for a client Rose prolonged by a miracle and that God's intervention turned the tide of battle for his people well I suppose the God that God can provide light by whatever means let's go on because it says the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day there's never been a day like it before since the day when the Lord listened to a man surely the Lord was fighting for Israel and then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gil gal for 16 says now the 5 kings had fled and hidden in the cave at McCain and when Joshua was told that the 5 kings had been found hiding in the cave at McKidd he said roll large rocks up to the mountain the cave and post some men there to guard it but don't stop pursue your enemies attack them from the rear and don't let them reach their cities for the Lord your God has given them into your hands so Joshua and the Israelites destroyed them completely almost to a man but the few who are left reach their fortified cities and the whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp of McKay to and no one uttered a word against the Israelites then Joshua said Open the mouth of the cave. Bring those 5 kings out to me and so they brought the 5 kings out of the cave of the kings of Jerusalem he brunch our mood Lakeisha Egland and when they had brought these kings to Joshua he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with them come here and put your feet on the neck of these kings so they came forward and placed their feet on the neck on their necks and now by the way placing a foot on the neck of a captive was a common military practice in the ancient near East it symbolized the victors domination you know over his captives these proud Kings had boasted of their power and now all Israel could see that God was superior to any athlete earthly army in verse 25 it says Do not be afraid do not be discouraged be strong and courageous This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight and then Joshua struck and killed the kings and hung them on 5 trees and they were left hanging on the trees until evening and at sunset Joshua gave the order and took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding and at the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks which are there to this day well whenever the day was that day Joshua took McKay to and he put the city in its kings to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it and he left no survivors and he did to the king of Makita as he had done to the king of Jericho where we're going to stop there today and continue one next time and I know we're going to have seen this time and we're going to see more next time there is a lot of shedding of blood there's a lot of things that in our day in age we would say are really uncivilized and maybe we are more civilized than they and maybe not. But the lesson that we want to get from all of this is that God was guiding them and giving the Israelites victory and these recollections that come in these in this portion of the scripture are to give all of those that followed after that time to our very day that message of God's guidance and God's leading I think it does well for all of us to stop periodic Lee and look back and see how God has led us in our lives but also to remind ourselves of those times when we decided to do it ourselves through our own wisdom and judgment and things did not go so well and yet God did not abandon us for our sins and mistakes and our lack of judgment but he was still there trying to set us on the right path so that we can truly be his children.
